E12: A Few Prayers
Thyme
God, are you busy?
God
‘Bout as usual.
Thyme
Wow, I can only imagine with all those people talking to you!
God
Not that many.
Thyme
With all the billions on the planet talking?
God
Not that many talking to me.
Thyme
Well, they don't know what they be missing!
God
Sort of sad, huh?
Thyme
Really? I thought everybody talked to you.
God
Useta be a lot more. Times have changed.
Thyme
Well, this Thyme hasn’t.
God
I appreciate it.
Thyme
People goin’ faster now, ain’t they?
God
Yup.
Thyme
Ya’ think that’s good?
God
Well, speed isn’t all what it’s cut out to be.
Thyme
Yeah, ever’body’s in a hurry. Ya’ know I’m a checkout girl at the Skedee Grocerette in town an’ …
God
Now Thyme, you know I know this …
Thyme
Well pardon me fer fergettin’ you know ever’thing.
God
You’re excused.
Thyme
Anyways, I likes ta’ chat a bit with all ma’ friends when I’m addin’ up their purchases. It’s ma’ only chance ta’ talk ta’ people with livin’ way outta town on the farm with Mama. An’ most people useta like ta’ chat right back an’ tell me ‘bout their dog’s sore foot or their husband’s drinkin’ problem or whatever. But more lately seems like ever’body wants to pay up an’ git on home -- and if anybody even begins ta’ git chatty, folks in line start grumpin’ an’ moanin’ ‘bout this an’ that.
God
Yup. Everybody’s in a rush.
Thyme
Yeah, but where they rushin’ to? Ya’ mean they ain’t even got time ta’ pray to you?
God
Lady the other day was prayin’ to me during the TV commercials of her Soap Opera. She’d be in the middle of askin’ for this an’ that and the commercial would be over and she’d say, “’Scuse me God, I’ll be right back as soon as I find out if Mary Lou caught Clark in the sack with Gretchen.” 20 minutes later she’d be back in my ear asking for money for her new Range Rover. Like you said, it’s a different world out there.
Thyme
Phew. I donno how ya’ do it.
God
Well, they’re all my responsibility whether they talk to me or not.
Thyme
Do the ones that talk to you get preference?
God
What do you mean by that?
Thyme
Well, you know, do they get any brownie points jus’ fer talkin’ to you?
God
You looking for Brownie points, Thyme?
Thyme
No, a’course not. We friends. I ain’t lookin’ fer nothin’ ‘cept a little company an’ a little advice on occasion.
God
I know.
Thyme
So how we humans gonna get back ta’ slowin’ down … like it was in the good ol’ days?
God
Well, one thing for sure … times will change and something will come along and force the change.
Thyme
You’ll do that, right?
God
Maybe. Maybe not. Sometimes it’ll just be the natural order of things, sometimes it’ll fall to me, and sometimes even a powerful human will lead the way.
Thyme
You mean like a Martin Luther King or a Jesus type, right?
God
Yup.
Thyme
I hope that will happen in my lifetime.
God
Never know. Just might …
Thyme
Well, I’m gonna pray on that.
God
I’d appreciate it.
(pause)
Thyme
Phew … gonna be a hot one.
God
(no answer)
Thyme
God? Ya’ there? (no answer) God? Well, musta gotten another call … See ya’ tomorrow …
