Havin’ A Talk With God
A Podcast Series
E16: What Keeps Ma’ Heart Beatin’?
Thyme
Boo!
God
Boo! Right back atcha.
Thyme
I thought I’d surprise ya’.
God
Nothing surprises me, Thyme.
Thyme
Oh, that’s right, you’re God.
God
Right. Omniscient.
Thyme
So, nothin’ surprises you ever?
God
How could it. I know the future.
Thyme
Phew, tha’s deep.
God
Yup.
Thyme
So you know when I’m gonna git married, have children and die?
God
Yup.
Thyme
Well, … wouldja be willin’ ta’ clue me in on some a’ that? You know … a little advance warnin’?
God
Nope.
Thyme
Rats. I thought I had a leg up here with ya’.
God
Ya’ do, Thyme, but not on the future. If I did, as you say, “clue you in”,there wouldn’t be any surprises now, would there? An’ we know how much you like surprises.
Thyme
Yeah, well I do, but some a’ them ain’t so good, are they?
God
No, some of them don’t appear to be so good in the moment that they happen, but in the turn of events, you also never know where that just might lead you.
Thyme
Ya’ mean what seems bad at the time might end up bein’ good fer ya.’
God
Now you got it.
Thyme
Hmmm. I’m not sure I’d wanna know when I’m gonna die anyway.
God
Well, I wouldn’t worry about that. You just might be needed elsewhere.
Thyme
Ya’ mean you might be needin’ me ta’ do somethin’ fer you?
God
I just might. Ya’ never know. Besides, you never really die anyway. You just transmorgrify.
Thyme
Whoa! That’s a big word. I’ll hafta look that one up.
God
Don’t have to. It means “to transform in a surprising or magical manner.”
Thyme
Well, I like that. Transmorgrify. I could git inta’ that.
God
Like I said, “Ya’ never know …”
Thyme
Yeah, I guess I’ll never know. Until it happens.
God
Yup.
Thyme
In the meantime, I’ve been wonderin’. Jus’ what is it that keeps ma’ heart beatin’? Ya’ know, beat after beat. Sometimes at night when I’m layin’ in bed I get ta’ listenin’ to ma’ heart jus’ beatin’ away in my chest an’ I get ta’ wonderin’ what I would do if it were ta’ jus’ … stop. An’ then I think, “Why in the world does it beat in the first place?” I mean, I have no control over this, never. I mean it’s a part a’ me, but it jus goes on and on an’ I don’t even hafta think ‘bout it. Jus’ what is it that keeps it beatin’, God?
God
Life. A thing called “life.”
Thyme
Uh huh … you made life?
God
I am life.
Thyme
You ARE life?
God
That’s right, I ARE.
Thyme
You makin’ fun a’ me?
God
No, Thyme. I’m makin’ a point. I am. So Life is. So you ARE.
Thyme
So it’s you who keeps my heart beatin’?
God
Me, Life, … same thing.
Thyme
Well. What is life made up of?
God
Moments, Moments in time.
Thyme
But I’ve heard ya’ say, “There is no time.” Ha! Gotcha there, huh?
God
Well, that’s right too. Time isn’t really real. So it’s not a matter of moments, is it? It’s all just one moment.
Thyme
Wow. One big fat moment.
God
Yup.
Thyme
So when did that moment, this moment, begin? Oh wait. I know what yer gonna say. It never did. It never began. An’ it will never end. Right? God, right? God? Oh lordy …
