Thyme
Dear God,
God
Yes, Thyme,
Thyme
Well, you were right – as usual.
God
And what am I right about this time?
Thyme
Well, I dern near messed up ma’ life, that’s all.
God
I imagine you’re speaking of fixin’ it up with your fiancé.
Thyme
You think it’s all fixed?
God
He appears to be back in the saddle.
Thyme
I learned ma’ lesson.
God
Good.
Thyme
I did everything you suggested, but it weren’t easy. He’s a proud man and sure was slow ta’ come around, but I stuck to ma’ guns an’ didn’t let up with the “I’m sorries” until he would smile at me an’ take my hand. Once we got t’a kissin’ … well, let’s jus’ say it was pretty easy after that.
God
So I observed …
Thyme
You was watchin?! Oh Lord …
God
Well, of course I was. You two are one of my special projects and so I wanted to pay special attention. But you handled the whole matter in a most exemplary manner.
Thyme
I donno what got inta’ me, God … playin’ them mind games with him was certainly not a particularly smart choice an’ I’m glad you advised me otherwise. Thank you.
God
You think everything’s OK now?
Thyme
I’m sure of it. We’s as close as two peas in a pod.
God
I wish that were true.
Thyme
It’s not?
God
Some things take time, Thyme.
Thyme
Ya’ mean he’s still got his doubts? He didn’t seem so doubtful when we were doin’ all that kissin’.
God
Well, the kissin’ part was very helpful, but it’s not the ultimate panacea.
Thyme
An’ jus’ what is? I’ll do whatever it takes …
God
Oh it’s easy to get all carried away with all that physical stuff, but that’s just not cut out to be the thing that settles the heart.
Thyme
Well, what is that “thing”, God?
God
Trust.
Thyme
Hmm. One word again, huh?
God
Yeah, one word, but a mighty big concept. Your little game was a game changer. Trouble was, it redefined your relationship. You can’t right a wrong like that with a physical solution. You have to regain his trust … an’ that takes time.
Thyme
How much time?
God
Weeks, months, sometimes years …
Thyme
(Sigh) Well, what do I do in the meantime?
God
It’s simple, really. Just be trust worthy. Give him no reason for doubt … ever. If you’re trustworthy, he’ll come around in time.
Thyme
Oh God, I jus’ feel terrible ‘bout all this. Here we had such a perfect thing goin’ on, an’ I went an’ messed it all up.
God
Maybe it’s good that it happened. You learned a lesson and the both of you now know that this marriage thing is not something to be toyed with. It’s a pact … to live together in an atmosphere of trust. You’ll have children together that will learn this from both of you and grow up and be better humans. You have the choice to either better the race or do it damage. Which do you choose to do?
Thyme
Yeah. I accept your challenge. I believe in this man. I want him to believe in me. I will do whatever it takes.
God
Well, that’s the starting point. Now ya’ gotta stick to it. You’re either trust worthy or you’re not. There’s no in between. A lot of folks think that they can play the edges, but ya’ can’t. Life just doesn’t work like that.
Thyme
I see that now. I think I was jus’ goin’ too fast. It’s a mistake I will always regret.
God
Don’t have to.
Thyme
Don’t have to what?
God
You don’t have to regret. It’s a waste of time. If you’re truly trustworthy, what’s to regret?
Thyme
Uh huh. Lessons in growin’ up.
God
Yup. Lessons in growin’ up.
(long beat)
Thyme
Do you trust me, God?
God
I do.
Thyme
Short an’ sweet, huh? Two little words. “I do.” An’ all is well. Hmm. That’s what we get to say in the marriage ceremony, isn’t it? I do. Do you take this man … Do you take this woman … I do. Well, I’ll be ready ta’ say that. That’s a promise.
God
An’ so will he, Thyme. Like you say, “He’s a good man.” He too is trustworthy. You’re a match made in heaven.
Thyme
Thank you, God. Thank you. See ya’ tomorrow.
God
See ya’ tomorrow.
