Speaker 1:

So welcome to Awakened Conscious Conversations podcast. I'm your host, the Gentle Yoga Warrior, and today we have got a very special guest joining us today and we are going to talk all about. Your symptoms are not the root cause, so I encourage you to begin with a moment of serenity and introspection, a moment just to be, whether it's observing your breath, engaging with nature or simply being present, and together let's see where these final episodes of the year lead us. Always reach out via shamanicheelingsorg and if you'd like this shamanic healing session, do contact us there. Today's guest faces challenges and a lack of support from traditional Western practitioners and struggled with various health concerns. However, through her own journey, she learned to reconnect with her inner power. So in a moment we will welcome functional diagnostic nutrition practitioner Fallen Moranenstar.

Speaker 1:

When I was researching Fallen and I love the quote that she has, I think I saw on her website. It says we all face decisions day by day. It doesn't come naturally to any of us, so do not wallow, but it's a choice of will. Do not wallow for long. It's up to us to come back up to center and own it. I can't wait for Fallen to share with you, dear listeners, how she changed her life around. So, dear listeners, without further ado, please welcome Fallen Moranenstar joining us all the way from Pennsylvania. Welcome, fallen, and welcome to the show.

Speaker 2:

Thank you so much for having me, Jane. It's a pleasure to be here.

Speaker 1:

I'm so pleased to have you on the show today and absolutely interested in sharing this with our listeners, because today we're going to talk about our symptoms are not our root cause, and with it I just want to explain to our listeners what a fantastic story that you've had in your life and very keen to get you on the show, because I've got you the best person to speak to us today about this. Would you mind first of all Fallen to explain a bit about your journey and your life experience and your path?

Speaker 2:

Briefly I would say my journey started about four years ago when I was having some compounding health concerns come up, both physical and, unconsciously, mental challenges too when looking back, and I didn't really know where to turn besides my family physician. So I just explained to him I think there's something going on with my hormones, I'm having some digestive discomfort, I'm having any regular cycle at that point insomnia, emotional eating, and I felt like the list kind of again continued to compound and I was left the doctor's office with more questions and answers and then I went to my gynecologist, explained to her that I had chosen to stop taking the hormone or birth control pill and I again left the office kind of disheartened and frustrated and so I was led into functional health and that is kind of why we're here today talking about how it supported me in transforming.

Speaker 1:

Of great, brilliant. Thank you, fallon. Just to kind of sidestep, I was reading your book earlier and I thought I found it really fascinating what you said about the birth control and how it takes magnesium and all the things that it takes out of the body, and I was on it for a number of years and I really did feel like it affected my health for a long time. And I also liked the way you shared about how we're kind of encouraging society to kind of go on birth control pills etc. But there's only about six or seven days a month that women can actually get pregnant technically and how it's just not so good for us. So I'm really interested to unravel a bit more about that. First of all, would you mind explaining to our listeners why symptoms are not a root cause and how you came up with this?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, well, I wanted to note I appreciate you reading the chapter in the book. I'm honored that you did that. And secondly so, symptoms, that is not something that I came up with, so from my functional health certification we were taught this and it makes so much sense when we think about it a little bit deeper. It's almost like when a symptom comes up, such as bloating, headache, fatigue, whatever. It's almost like we are chasing that particular symptom so ibuprofen for headache, atoms for stomach discomfort or bloating, you know and it's like we're never actually looking at what is causing that. Right, and it's so much deeper than what we think it is. It could certainly be a food sensitivity that might be causing a headache. It could be an imbalance in our gut microbiome from particular bugs that might be causing some digestive discomfort, but it's almost like we're still chasing the symptom, like what is actually causing us to have this symptom.

Speaker 2:

And I think that's why functional health is very helpful for people, because we are testing things. It's very challenging to think about all of our gut bugs or all of our hormones and try to guess this thing, test it out, experiment with it and then guess another thing and put all of this very complex matrix together that we are in this human vessel and with the testing it helps to one validate you of your symptoms, right, because we as practitioners we make that clinical correlation with your symptoms and the test and then it gives us a nice roadmap to be able to say this is a good healing protocol for you and as you're going through that journey of healing, we're going to continue to make little tweaks, refinements, improvements and yeah. So I hope that that helps to note that it's never the symptom. It's a great messenger for us to be like okay, something's off, let's go ahead and dig a little bit deeper here.

Speaker 1:

I found that that's a great explanation. I love all that and I've always had that philosophy on health for many number of years, where I kind of I go down more the holistic approach and I sometimes see symptoms as like messages from the body and like I think we are taught in this kind of day and age to kind of try and quash the symptoms instead of like digging in a bit further to find out why they're there, and it sometimes could be something that we don't expect it to be. I've found anyway from my own personal journey, why do you feel then there's a lack of support in, I'd say, like conventional medicine for certain medical conditions, and how do you feel we could change that as a society?

Speaker 2:

Honestly, I think a lot has to do with the education system of conventional medicine because they are just simply not taught to really look at the entire body. That's not to say every doctor is not looking. It's kind of a generalization of what I've seen and what I've heard with clients that have come to me and also like failing members that have gone through the ringer with their health in conventional medicine. And it's almost like I've said this before we are going to a psychotherapist for mental health, we're going to a gastroenterologist for our stomach discomfort, we're going to any of these doctors that specialize in a particular area in the body, but yet there's still. It's almost like we're learning to manage our symptoms with conventional medicine Because we're not looking at the whole body, we're not looking at how things interact with each other and it's a very almost symptom view or surface level view. It doesn't have that depth to it and I don't think that Western or traditional medicine has the education for it. Nor do doctors seem like they have the time because they're seeing it's 15 minute sessions per patient if there's a regular checkup and they are overwhelmed themselves.

Speaker 2:

And also, I think there's a lot of money behind conventional medicine. There's big pharma, which is just a huge topic and I think sometimes it's sad to think about. But I would say a way that we can continue to open our eyes is that, one person at a time, it's almost like we have to have our own health crisis, our own journey of not getting these answers but still following our intuition to say no, I don't think that's right. I'm going to search over here, maybe in the Eastern or the integrative or functional area, and I find that a lot of people that come to me have stories of not getting the help that they're looking for in the conventional side. And again, I just think it's the educational system is just not taught that, right now at least.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, something is a number of factors that kind of have restricted the amount of time doctors have with patients and bring pharma into the equation and it's not to sound like too negative, but it's not always the benefit really to for people not to be sick in so many aspects, which is quite sad.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, if you throw in insurance, it's a money making industry. It's not. Sometimes I'm almost like, do they actually want to help people with their health? It doesn't really seem like it. But I will say that's again an over-generalization or maybe a bit of an exaggeration, because I think they're. Why do people get into the health industry? Most of the times they do want to help people, right, and it's almost like there's this blindness that happens sometimes, like good people kind of being brought into this matrix of blindly following this protocol, even though maybe in their gut they don't think that that's the right approach. But I will say, if you are in need of a surgery, if you have a broken arm, by all means functional health cannot help you. At that point there's reasons to go to the doctor. But I would say, if you're having some symptoms that are persisting, like the headaches and the digestive discomfort and the fatigue, it might benefit you more to take an integrative and holistic approach to why that's happening.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, see the kind of help in a different way. I think it sounds like to me, like you said, sometimes people can follow health things kind of blindly, but it sounds to me like if people get into this business and they want to help, it sounds like the system just needs to kind of open its eyes a bit more to functional health and work together instead of kind of work against each other would be an ideal scenario in many aspects. In many ways, the functional health approach that you took to heal yourself how long was it easy and did it take a long time?

Speaker 2:

Well, I will say I am still on that journey of healing and I think we all are. It's almost like this journey just helps us get to know ourself more right and I think, depending on, of course, how old you are, what your circumstances are, it really spreads out how long your healing journey is, and I think, leading up to age 26, I mean, I had 26 years of unhealthy eating, unhealthy habits, you know, unawareness of coping, like how to actually cope with life and stress management, etc. So it's almost like it is a gradual process, not to make up for the 26 years but to move forward in a gentle way, and I think that just takes more time than what people would like. You know we are a society now where we order something from Amazon and we get it the next day right. We want super quick results and it just with our health. It's almost. We have to be gradual. You might experience some relief right in the beginning, which is fantastic, but then there's a lot of rebuild that needs to happen until we hit that maintenance. And again, that length depends on your particular individuality and what your circumstances are.

Speaker 2:

So, with functional health, I would say I delved into it with. You know, we ran some functional lab testing and at that time I was working with my own practitioner and I learned a lot about how to heal the body with quote different diet, a better sleep hygiene routine, a better exercise routine, and at that point I was so stressed out that walking was recommended rather than, you know, weight training like I was doing, incorporation of meditation as well as natural supplementation. So with those five pillars and changing the lifestyle with those five pillars that I have seen such great results and symptoms went away roughly four or five months, maybe six Again, it's been a few years. But then it's almost like because my vitality in my system was so much more enhanced, like I could handle the day again because I wasn't so stressed out, this door opened up into the emotional body and I'm almost like, wow, okay, there's more to explore here.

Speaker 2:

And that's when I transitioned more into trauma, somatic experiencing parts, work, because the physical body, like following this regimented food, this sleep, it's almost like it's just one piece of health. We have to look even deeper into the emotional self, going back to childhood, not necessarily reliving experiences, but looking into the nervous system and how it is wired and how dysregulated it might get with a family member or family gathering or a partner like a romantic relationship. So it goes much deeper and I would say that's kind of the second half of my healing journey, of really being introspective of how my thoughts are thinking and how they've been thinking, and is that negative towards myself or is it not Like our thoughts ultimately do create our reality? So it's almost like this functional health journey has expanded even more into the emotional side of things and even like the spiritual side of things to again come together in this beautiful, beautiful oneness.

Speaker 1:

I'll say I like that beautiful oneness and as I listen to you, val, and it reminds me that I think with functional health and things like that, as a person who's trying to heal, you've got to put a bit of work in yourself and I think sometimes you can get so lazy like you said, you can get some from Amazon the next day but it's like, it's worth, in my opinion. From my experience, it's worth the effort of making these changes in your daily life to for the long term plan, if that makes sense.

Speaker 2:

Yeah yeah, and it can absolutely feel overwhelming, depending on your circumstance, because there are a lot of changes typically that people need to make. But I've learned that it's not about really the speed of things. It's just about okay, one breathing right, Focusing on our breath. It's one breath at a time, one decision at a time and it's one day at a time, and I think when we continue to put that into perspective, it makes things a bit more manageable when we're going on this healing journey.

Speaker 1:

That's very beautiful. It's accepting the humanists of who we are, and with compassion and love. That's how I would interpret that. So I understand that you have a lot of speciality in helping women with fatigue and bloating and all these kinds of health issues that Convention Medicine might not should be able to help. If I'm a woman now listening to you on this podcast and I'm picking oh yeah, that's me what can I do today to change?

Speaker 2:

that I think there's so many things I can mention, but honestly I would start with regulating your breath. That sounds so simple and I will say it's free to do that. But I want you to recognize how your breath is currently. Just take a minute and just observe if your stomach is constricted, maybe if you're just breathing into the depth of your throat or if it goes to the depth of your chest, and this matters a lot because it's almost like we're now trying to connect with our nervous system because the breath is supposed to come into our belly and expand our diaphragm. That's helpful in stimulating the vagus nerve, which helps to stimulate the parasympathetic, which is the rest and digest state. So it's more of that calm, grounded, peaceful, like we are calm Great word, just calm.

Speaker 2:

And so most of the time from previous experiences, from maybe the stimulation in our environment currently, from our kids, romantic relationship, our business, whatever we're not really intentionally focusing on the breath because obviously it's automatic and when that happens, when just the automation happens, it can be in the throat, we can have that constricted belly and that shifts us into more of this overwhelm, this anxiety. So it stimulates our hormone production. Our stress hormones are burning more often than they should be, which can lead to mineral loss, can lead to fatigue. Certainly, if we're burning through our adrenaline we have dysregulated cortisol and then with that we can have poor sleep which then feeds into the fatigue. So it's almost like all of this can indirectly be supported with the breath and focusing on the breath, because when we have a more regulated nervous system we can think better, right, we can go along our day better and again, this is free. So don't take it as like, oh, what advice is that? But take it as like this is free, your breath, it can be intentional and you can work to regulate your nervous system, to start changing something somewhere.

Speaker 2:

And then I would honestly say number two would be and this depends, you know, if somebody is already knowledgeable about health, my recommendation might be different. But I would also say to support your energy levels, which then can support the digestive system. I would say just slowly get in more minerals into your life and you can start that with. You know, of course you're drinking filtered water. The best, in my opinion, is like reverse osmosis. But you can add these trace mineral drops. If you just type in Amazon trace mineral drops or a full script or whatever it will come up and you just put that in your water and, honestly, that's a great, simple, gentle way for you to introduce a bit more minerals into your diet and that's just a great start. And again, it's very dependent on where people are at in their journey.

Speaker 1:

They're very helpful tips, though, for everyone. So I really appreciate that. And yeah, breathing I know when I've been. If I ever feel stressed, I like, look, I just I just post when I'm listening to my breathing and I'm like I'm not breathing properly, whereas I feel calm, like when I'm sitting to do meditation, my breath feels slower and it can have quite a quick effect, in my opinion, on the body. So if you are feeling hyper and stressed, you're listening to Fallon's tips about breathing and stuff like that it can really really help. So, fallon, I was honored to read. You sent me some of your book earlier to read and I've been drawing it so far and it's very honest and I love the narrative style that you use. Is that second person? Or the way that you've done it? And it's done so well and it's an unusual way to write, so it's not so common, but it's so it's done so well. Would you mind explain a bit about your book and for our dear listeners?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we'd love to Thank you for that. So the book is called Shout it From the Rooftops. It was released in September of this year of 2023. And it is just transformational stories. Basically, I am in the book with 14 other women that are sharing their experiences of whatever they feel they need to quote unquote shout from the rooftops and mine is pleasure and vitality are your birthright and it's really about redefining womanhood on your own terms. And the way that I structured it was in the third person, because it's almost like I'm observing Fallon and her experiences and what I'm trying to bring to women, or just what I've learned along my way. And at the end of the chapter there is a QR code actually it's super cool that you can scan with your phone and it brings you to a very short YouTube video that is a meditation with myself and the music behind it is with a company called Listening to Smile and it is about tapping into more of your pleasure centers and your vitality to really it's ultimately like to enhance the chapter.

Speaker 2:

So I go through this chapter really explaining more of my story, explaining different. You know I mentioned some of the symptoms here, but I also go into much more detail about how I work to heal those symptoms and, ultimately, with the emotional body, how I've been able to tap more into the somatic experiencing and why it's very important to check in with your body and to be in your body, because a lot of us are either in our head or, quote unquote, in the clouds and we are very disconnected as a society to our body. So it ties that into the chapter as well and ultimately it's a reflection on how women can tap more into their own femininity, tap into their own power and their radiance, because I think, again, society has really rung us dry. You know I don't know if that's if there's a better term and I think that we have such beautiful intelligence that needs to be tapped into. And one way is through getting to know yourself, like taking the time setting up the boundaries for yourself instead of trying to take care of everybody else and not instead of but almost make sure that you are filling you up and getting to know you. You know we are such complex beings and I think we, as we mentioned earlier in the episode, the birth control pill, just any contraceptive, is really disconnecting us from our lower half, which is where our creation is. It's where our creativity and our power and our radiance lie.

Speaker 2:

And the chapter also dives into that very thing, and it brings introspective questions at the end that you can choose to journal about or just think about and work to move forward so you two can experience more vitality and more pleasure in your life. And it doesn't have to be pleasure as far as like orgasmic pleasure. It can be pleasure with eating food, pleasure with a conversation you have with a dear friend or a stranger, you know, tapping into that present moment to feel life's pleasures. So that is a little bit about the chapter, and you can find the book there's a Kindle version or a paperback version on Amazon as well as, I believe, anywhere else that sells books. The last point I want to say is the all of the proceeds that are made from the book are actually going to a consulting company. It's called TAPN Consulting and they support people that have been human trafficked and they support them in really trying to cope and find their voice again. So all of the proceeds go to that organization.

Speaker 1:

Oh, that is absolutely wonderful, fallin. I'll share a link in the show notes and I'm going to share that with my main list as well. So I think that's a really wonderful thing that you've got offering the world through your book and it's just the kind of book I love where there's like exercises and things. I mean it always loves to learn and kind of grow and do new things and I really like the honesty and the way what I've read so far the book is absolutely fantastic, so I'm very keen to share that with our listeners. Is there anything that you wish everybody knew? I know this sounds a bit of a question, but I was wondering. This question would be interesting.

Speaker 2:

That's a great question. What do I wish everybody could know? Probably there's more wisdom in your body than I think that we know. I could just go so deep into that. But it's almost like remember how powerful you are already and it just takes that stillness to continue to gently open that window for you to see it yourself.

Speaker 1:

Yes, I like that a lot. That stillness, yeah, fantastic. I've got to the point in the show where I would like to ask you if I've got one more question, if I may. Is there anything short today that you wish you had covered? And if so, please fire away.

Speaker 2:

I would say I think sometimes people are having confusion or challenges with the direction to go to support their health. Maybe they're looking on Google and like I have this coming out of my skin. What is it? Or you know, it's almost like we're trying to resolve these things and it's almost like okay, google it says I'm dying. And that's not true, right? So it's almost like I would love people to know that with functional lab testing, it's a very direct way for you to get clarity on a direction to heal. It is not guessing things or just hoping for the best. It's almost like there's a relief in people's nervous systems when they see these results on the test, because it's almost like, oh my gosh, finally I have this direction to go about my way. And it's never like that's the end all be all answer, but it provides direction and I think a lot of us in life are looking for more clarity and more direction when we have gone through different rabbit holes and it's still leaving us with a lot of questions. So I would just love to support how lab testing can help you.

Speaker 2:

I wouldn't say fast track things, because it's not about getting there fast, but it's almost like it's a relief for you to invest in yourself because it might end up saving you years of time, rather than the guess and check method. I know for me I probably would have been still having a lot of my symptoms that I did years ago if it wasn't for the testing, because I just didn't. I was kind of at my wit's end, I just didn't know what necessarily to do. So I would say if you're feeling a little bit stuck, it could be to your benefit to look into lab testing. And that again is if you're already on the track of more holistic lifestyle things, right. So it's not to say that if you're eating the fast food, if you're going to bed at 1am, etc. That you should look into lab testing. That's not what I'm saying.

Speaker 2:

I think that you can definitely improve with a practitioner, maybe like a coach, to help you change some of your lifestyle things, because that's ultimately where you're going to start. So it's almost like focus on the lifestyle and if you've already been doing that and you're kind of still questioning like why is this coming up, then I would say look at the functional labs to help you paint a clearer picture for yourself. So I just wanted to make that distinction and that support. Hopefully it feels guiding to people that there always are answers out there. It just takes your effort and again that stillness to be like okay, I think I need to seek out a coach now that is involved in this, or I think I need to read this book or listen to this podcast episode or just take a freaking nap and just meditate. So I just encourage people to always know that there's always answers and I would never say, like there's always answers, don't give up on you figuring things out. I think it's the journey that we need to be more interested in, rather than the destination.

Speaker 1:

I like that, so there's always answers out there. If I'm a listener and I want to find out more about you and connect with you and find out more about information, what's the best way that people can reach out to you? Fallon?

Speaker 2:

So two different options. There's email, which is discover at fallonmorningstarcom. There is also Instagram at fallonmorningstar.

Speaker 1:

Brilliant. Okay, I'll also put links in the show notes, so I'd like to thank you so much. You've been really interesting and I'm sure our listeners are going to get a lot of value from this episode. And there's always the list of do stay tuned. There's a meditation inspired by today's show, but the morning on you, fallonmorningstar, joining us all the way for Pennsylvania. So, thank you, fallon. Thank you so much for having me. Jean, thank you very much.

Speaker 1:

As promised, here is your meditation inspired by today's show. Top tips for the meditation is either sit nice and cross-legged on the floor with a nice straight back always nice to sit on a block or a cushion Well, that's not available for you. You sit in a chair with a back nice and straight. The important thing is you're not slouching, and if you're doing something that requires you concentration, all you need to do is just pause this and you can reconvene the meditation at a time that is good for you. If you're doing the meditation, let's begin. So sit tall and long with the spine, think and be just now. Think back to the time when you were really joyfully connected with the ground. Was it a walk on the grass? Was it a walk across the sands, whatever it is. Just picture yourself somewhere where you're magically connected with the ground. As you breathe deeply and slowly, feel as if you breathe into the whole of the lung capacity. So start just below the navel as you inhale, allow the belly to bellow out like Buddha belly, round and abundant, and breathe into the upper chest, the back, and then allow the exhale, inhale and exhale, inhale and exhale, and as you do that, can you feel the heartbeat of Mother Nature Beating in time with your heart Nature. Dig deep, go into the caves of your possibility, into the ground, into the roots. What roots do you connect with? What roots do you connect with? Be those roots and body those roots. Be the breath, be the now, be the present.

Speaker 1:

The mind may want to sail off to distant shores, it may want to go here or there, wherever it goes. Just be in the moment, be in the present, breathe deep, special one, breathe deep and long. So your mind, it may want to dart as it darts, drag it back. Drag it back to the earth, to the earth, to the now, to the present moment. Can you use the breath, the breath as a tool? All elements are connected, they all move together as one, but the prevalent earth element is where we're going now. Allow the elements to support, but go to the earth, the richness, fertility, fertile soil of our being. Inhale and exhale. Inhale and exhale, just come within. Come within and allow the decadence, the joy of just being silent.

Speaker 1:

Go into the darkness, into the cave, into your cave. Use the earthly senses, so the sense of touch, the sense of smell, the sense of sound. Use your breath. Don't worry if you cannot see what you were born to see at this present moment. Just explore. Go deeper and deeper into that cave. You can breathe, you are safe, you are in the primal womb and the heartbeat of the ground.

Speaker 1:

A light, a light, a lamp, like those old oil lamps from time Well gone, lights up a corner in this cave. It lights it up as if to let you know you are always safe, the safe in the earthness, the safeness in the ground. What do you see painted in these caves? Does it have a color? Does it have a sound? Can you go deep into your earthly roots? So, as you walk, your feet have now tree root boots and with each step you can move, so you have that sense of flow. But as each toe touches the ground it embeds in your being a sense of flow. Flow but structure, soft but sound. What do you see all around? Wake up the lamp, for it is safe, and then use it to walk down.

Speaker 1:

Walk down further into the cave. For now, as you get there, water flows softly, in the background, a stream, a bubbling brook, and then light starts to fill this cavely compound. Safe steps, safe steps made of earth with sprouting flowers, lead up out of the crevice of this cave and you take them one by one. As you step softly on the ground, you embody who you are, this earthly element of life and then, one day, death. But for now you are on this earthly plane and it is your duty to your sovereignty of your soul to be who you are, by being still at times, balanced with action, but by not being a slave to your vices.

Speaker 1:

As you reach up to the top of the stairs, you reach a door, so a trap door. At first it feels a bit hard to move. So you take a breath, you inhale, and as you exhale, you just gently push this flap door open. And there you are in the garden, the garden of your possibilities. You smell the flowers, their scent tingles around your nostrils. The sun beats down on the earth. You take your shoes off and you feel a soft, mossy lawn. It scrunches a little as you walk and then you know that you can flow and move, but at the same time as you do that, you are fully supported.

Speaker 1:

Now you see a stone, a beautiful stone, upon the floor. What colour this stone? That's up to you. Whatever you switch, whichever one draws you, you pick that stone, that precious stone, up and you hold it in your hand. A gift from your own divinity, a chance to ground and be so. Every time you feel that things get taken away in the whirlwind of what you are meant to be, just remember this mystical stone, this energetic stone. You can always take it from your pocket and as you hold onto this stone, you inhale, exhale, let go and be For now. Commence your journey back into the world of the now, safe in the knowledge you can always visit your magical place. Allow, be, surrender your fourth bright one, bright as the stars in the earthly sky, and take life as what it is a gift, a chance to learn and something that should be precious in our being. Just start to take some slow, deep breaths and come back into the present moment. Start to wiggle the hands and toes. You can start to move the spine a bit.
