What would a bullet journal look like if you designed it specifically for doing a PhD?In this episode, Inger and Jason crack open a brand-new bullet journal and build one from scratch.

They cover the basics — daily logs, monthly spreads, collections, indexing and threading — then start adding tools specifically for researchers.

Along the way they explore concept maps, the “bedraggled daisy” for finding your research niche, reading metadata, supervision notes, tracking academic service and expenses, and creating a master index across years of notebooks.

[00:00:00] Let's do it. Welcome to On The Rig. I'm Dr Jason Downes, and I'm here with my good friend, Professor Inga Mewburn from the Australian National Univers- University. University. Yes. Um, w- long, technical words. I should probably get an advanced- Mm ... degree to be able to say these- Yeah ... kinds of words.

Mm. Uh, also co-founder, director, all-around legend for On The Rig team. Um, and we're here for another episode of On The Rig, a podcast where we talk about work, but you know, not in a boring way. Never boring. Never boring. No. Practical, implementable productivity hacks to help you live a more balanced life.

Inga, it's good to see you. Yeah, it's good to see you, colleague. We've... Like, the last time we saw each other was about a week ago- Yeah ... when we recorded the last episode. Not a lot has happened. Not a lot, not a lot has happened. I must admit. Uh, what have I done in the last week? Uh, I'm just trying to think.

Mm. Uh- Nothing- No, I've been to Queensland You went to Queensland. See, you just shoot off all over the country. I went to Queensland. That's what- I can't keep track I was, , presenting our, uh, research careers on your own [00:01:00] terms workshop. Mm. , We subcontract into Campus Plus. , And I was doing it on behalf of QUT, which is part of the National Industry PhD Program, which is a program, um, run by the federal government, Department of Education, and so on and so on and so on and so.

Mm. I can't remember who exactly. Department of Education. Um, and they fund, uh, people to undertake PhDs inside industry settings. Yeah. And so, which is really good. Yeah. Um- They get an extra stipend. They get extra time on their PhD. It's hard to get people who wanna do it. Yeah. So check it out, if you're in a PhD, you can, you can start a PhD and then enter this program, so you don't have to- Oh, it do- Yeah Oh, I thought you had to apply.

Mm, don't quote me on that. Oh, okay. And we're- There, there will be rules. For context, we're in my house. Yes, we are today. We're doing literal kitchen table. This is my kitchen table. Lovely. This is my Lego collection. Yes. Yeah, the Villa Savoye. I've got the, um, an art gallery, and up there I've got falling water.

I don't know if that's in frame. It is. Falling water. Good. [00:02:00] I've got all my things, and we've got a sleeping dog over there. Wait, wait, whom we're going to let lie. We're gonna let the sleeping dog lie, and we're gonna get interrupted, aren't we, Jason? There's gonna be cuts. There'll be- There's- We're doing things.

We're gonna do a multimedia- Extravaganza? Yes Probably, probably a bit strong, extravaganza Because we're gonna, we're gonna do a bullet journal thing Today. It's gonna be amazing. Yeah. We've got, like, a stand here that we're gonna, like, film the bullet journal. We're gonna build a PhD bullet journal- Yeah, yeah

in front of you. So- It's gonna be amazing ... so the idea here being that everybody has their own approach to building their own bullet journals, which works well for them, and but what we were thinking about was if you had to advise somebody else how to set one of these things up- Yeah ... how would you go about doing that?

And everybody's different, and so we've seen listeners have sent through, , images of their own bullet journal, and there's such a diversity there that it was [00:03:00] like, well, the real challenge here is what are the key things that you would set up for someone who was doing a PhD, rather than for someone who wanted to just kind of live their life and all the chaos that's- Yeah

part of that. And, like, the advantage of that is there'll be things in setting up for a PhD that are relevant for all researchers- Mm ... or just life. Mm. So you'll be able to take something away even if you're not doing a PhD, but we thought it was a good framework- Yep ... for talking about you've got a brand-new fancy bullet journal.

This one was given to me. Mm. Gifted to me. It is a real Moleskine. One, and like quite a big one actually. It was given to me by, , Aaron Birdsell great friend of mine, actually Yes Um, who is the chief executive officer person who runs Writing Partners, a business- Yes

not-for-profit business- Yes ... in the United States, set up by the guy who thought up Shut Up and Write Yeah So it, um, he came to Australia last year. You and I were at a forum- Mm-hmm ... where we talked about Shut Up and [00:04:00] Write- Mm ... we talked about community writing and stuff, and he gave me this as a present. Yeah, yeah.

He came and stayed with me here in my house and gave me this. So- Nice ... and I've been ... I've wanted to use it, but it's sort of special to me. You can frame it and stick it on the wall. This is ... What I thought was, like, as a way for it to sort of remain special to me- Mm ... is, like, if we set this up as a teaching example, we can take it with us when we teach productivity and stuff- Yeah, yeah

and as a, as an example. So it'll always be a special bullet journal. So it's unused. Brand-new. Yeah, so we'll break it in. But we've got mailbag. We've got mailbag. Yeah. So, uh, since last week when we published, people have been writing to us and texting to us, uh, uh, answering some of the questions that we've had.

So we're just gonna dive straight into the mailbag, um, which is where we love hearing from you all, , and we love sharing the interesting things that you guys have got to say. , And so people have written into us this week.. via our, um, our dedicated [00:05:00] pod@ontheregteam.com email address.

If you write to that, it will turn up. I will, I manage that particular, uh, inbox, and your mail should make it to the very next show. And I just made it big because you had it so tiny, teeny-tiny- Uh-huh ... that my glasses, old person glasses, I couldn't even see the screen. Oh. Yes. Okay Um, uh, the first one's from Cameron- Yes

who tells us that he misses us. Oh, that's nice. And Inga, it's in black, so this one's yours. Okay, we were gone for a long time. We were. And you'll notice that we've been, we're semi-regular-ish, monthly-ish. We're back. And so we thought since we're doing other things that we, you know... So we're back, Cameron.

We're back. , And you've written to us, which is amazing, and I'm reading this 'cause it's black, right? Yes, correct. Last last time I just started fiddling around with our- You- ... years long organization Like, it's like- 'Cause it was creative, Jason. It was just a production note. You grabbed the wheel of the bus- I did

and you're like, "I'm just gonna read this shit [00:06:00] now." I did. I did. I did. Okay, I'm gonna read it. Good morning, Jason and Inga. It is still morning here- Mm ... so that, that works. Uh, Cameron writes, "I imagine life is pretty hectic for both of you at the moment." Thank you. It is. I, I think it is for all of us. I've certainly been flat out, which probably explains why I've only just realized it's been a little while since the last podcast episode dropped.

I just wanted to say I always enjoy listening to your podcast and usually come away with a few good insights as well. Like, you know, so you think about all of the institutional training that you get- Yeah ... or, uh, even cross-institutional training. Yeah. It's like institution first- Gotta get my coffee ... humans s- human second. Yeah. And I was about to say, like, you actually learn a lot more just from having coffee- Yeah, yeah

with, with- With friends ... with friends. Yeah. So that's what we are, coffee with friends. Yeah, yeah. Mm. And so we're, we, we take your side. I can t- I can legitimately do that 'cause I'm not institutionally affiliated. Anymore, yeah. Although if, uh, someone wants to give me, what is it? A fellowship? A, like, like- We call it a person of interest.

Ooh. Just like they are in the cop shows. Oh, yes. That sounds bad. And then they were like, "Maybe that doesn't sound so good," so they changed it to VHA. Oh. Visitor and honorary associates? Yeah. Don't quote me on that. And so no one uses VHA because we're all so used to person of interest- Mm ... and it's funny.

Okay. 'Cause whenever we say, we're like, "Well, you're now a person of interest. Watch out." Okay. You might get asked for [00:08:00] money. I need a POI. So if I could be a POI somewhere, just to keep my hand in- Yeah ... you know how it is. Just keep your hand in, yeah. Um, friend of the pod, Ben Archer, uh, has written to us about his AI use.

Ben has written to us a few times. Mm. Every time he writes to us, he's got interesting things to say. Thank you, Ben. The, so he's written bit of a long one here. It's in pink. I'll read it. Oh, yes, you read it. "Howdy, Jason and Inga." I noticed that everybody in the last mail bag said Inga and Jason, so I thought I would flip it.

Okay. Actually, I went back and I checked. Yeah. Not everybody did, um, say, uh, Inga and Jason. Of course you checked. Because like, I was like, "That doesn't, I don't remember that." I- I think what happened was that Inga just read it that way.

Oh. I was like, "I don't recall that at all actually."

So yes, I will listen back to the recording to make sure, but anyway See, I don't like to think that I've got a big ego, but clearly I have. It's like stealth ego. That's right.[00:09:00] 

Uh, Ben carries on and he writes, "As a poor PhD student who- Time poor. Time poor. Poor. Yeah. Oh, yeah. As a time- Yeah. I mean, he might be poor poor as well, but time poor ... as a, as a- Yeah ... time poor PhD student who was recently shat out of the academy- Shat out of the academy. Mm. Wow, that's a, that's a mental image.

Yes. Um, in brackets, "Having to restart my PhD, find a new job at- Ooh ... a certain university, made both myself and most of my supervisors redundant in 2025." Holy shit, man. "I've had to deeply wrestle with how I use AI in my research." Mm. "I've made conscious decision to break my paid work and research work into high-value and low-value categories."

Mm. Tell us... Say more, Ben. I, like I like this Ben, because I'm instantly thinking four-box matrix. Yeah, me too. Yeah. Yeah. "Low-value tasks I consider to be things such as policies and procedures at work- Mm ... LinkedIn posts, ethics applications, and standard operating procedures that people read for fun or technical detail."

Mm. "I have trained several Claude projects to handle these, and I have trained it on my usual writing style." Yeah? [00:10:00] Yeah. Good call. Legit. Yeah. I kind of... I've done the same. Yeah, me too. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. "High-value tasks are things like academic journal articles, emails, uh, these are, as these are personal communications."

Mm. Mm. "This is where we differ." Mm. Unlike, I've outsourced email- Mm ... now. But anyway, blog posts, and of course, my dissertation." Mm-hmm. "These I need to write myself, not only so I can avoid plagiarism and the, and the like," excuse me, "but because these things I need to be able to recall deeply at the drop of a hat."

That's interesting. Mm. You know, we were saying the other day, I, like the email volume- Mm ... for our business and stuff, and I- Mm ... and I've outsourced a lot of this to our systems, because, um, a lot of the interactions that we have with our clients, there's just, there's just a lot of it. Mm. And w- and we can't keep it in our head straight, um, all the time, and so you need a trusted system, which is part of the, um, getting things done methodology- Yeah

by David Allen- Yeah ... where it calls for you, you need to have a trusted [00:11:00] system. Mm. The problem with that, I think, um, Ben's articulated here clearly, is that if you're away from your trusted system- Mm ... and you need that detail, and you've outsourced all of that to your trusted system- Mm ... um, you have problems.

Yeah. Yeah. And I think there's also been research that shows if you get Claude or Chatty to write something or summarize something for you- Mm ... it just doesn't go in the meat computer, right? Yeah. And the, and it's just not retained information at that point. Yeah. Um, so we said this was gonna be a very interrupted podcast, um, and that is Mr.

Thesis Whisperer- Mr. Thesis Whisperer ... coming home. Ooh. Ooh. With treats. With snacks.

It's bake sale Oh. Oh, bake sale. Oh, bake sale. It's Fanning's. Oh, good. Oh my gosh. Should I, should I stop helping? We'll, we'll pause here- Yeah ... and we'll come back, we'll come back to- Yeah ... Ben's email. Yeah And we're rolling. Ha, we're back. It was quite a long time we were not here. in the meantime. Yeah. Um, Ace is cute. Ace is really cute. Uh- High energy ... high energy beagle. Beagle. Yeah. Brings - Yeah ... brings lots of sniffings. Latte is on a meet- meeting dogs schedule that Brendan has set out for me. I'm behind. Mm. Yeah, but she was all right. Good. She comported herself okay. Okay. Only a little bit of growling.

Yeah. I don't know how she thought she could take Ace on, because he's about 10 times the size of her, literally, but anyway. Um, so, uh, successful another dog socialization. It's quite a lot being a dog mother. Uh, like I've noticed this thing- Mm ... because, uh, as you know, I've never owned a dog. Mm. So I'm like, "There's so much work-" Yeah

"to go on here." And it's all changed. Yeah. We're nice to dogs now. It's like math. Yeah. Like, it's just changed. Yeah, like when your kid starts math. Anyway, so yeah. Okay. All right. Good. Cool. Ben. We were... Ben. We're back at [00:13:00] you, Ben. Ben, we were back at you, and now I need to go back and find where you were- We were at low-value tasks.

We were coming to high-value tasks. Blog post, of course, my dissertation. We were agreeing with that. Yeah. Um- We were talking about recall, so- Yes ... I think we were at here ... I think that's where, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. So we were talking about recall, and whether or not if Claude or someone else was to write some things- Mm

it's harder for you to remember the, what it was written. Uh, which I, you know, I agree with. But l- how m- how different is that from reading a textbook and not taking any notes, yeah? Like, the author of the textbook wrote the stuff. You didn't write the stuff. Yeah, yeah. And so it's hard for you to remember a 480-page strategy text.

Yeah. It's hard for other people to remember. Me, on the other hand, phew. Yeah, but there's active note-taking, isn't there? Yeah. Like, there's something about reading with a pen in your hand, which is what my supervisor used to always say. It's not reading- Mm ... unless there's a pen in your hand. Mm. So I think we're with you on this one, Ben.

So we've still got some more letter to read out, though. Still gotta go. So Ben continues on from [00:14:00] that vein. He says, "I don't know the materials as well if I, if Claude writes it for me, and so I write these myself as it keeps the details in his working memory." Mm. "However, that's not to say I don't use Claude in my research."

Mm. "I have realized that in my 40s I have some AUHD..." Is there a phra- Like, is there a pronunciation here for that? A- Audi ADHD is what they usually say. Audi ADHD? Autistic and, um, ADHD tendencies. Okay. Tendencies. Tendencies. Yep, yep. L- Um, "And my mind runs at 300 kilometers an hour in six different directions- Mm

at any one time." Mm. "After reading for an hour or so, I'll struggle to organize my brain, so this is where Claude kicks in." Mm. "As I read, I keep notes of, in what I call a chook scratch zero cast iron-" I like that ... "in Obsidian." We might have to explain the Australianism of that. So a chook is a slang, Australian slang for chicken So chicken scratch Zettelkasten, um, and he has a digital version of that in Obsidian.

After leaving them for a day or so, I organize them into my Zettelkasten [00:15:00] and then export all my notes from Obsidian into Claude- Mm. Mm ... and ask it to help me organize these notes by theme or highlight how it impacts my research topic. I then engage and challenge Claude until we land on an interpretation or integration we're happy with, and then I'll get to writing on a sanitized distraction-free device.

Mm. Mm.

I agree with Inga's position that we should get AI out of the academy. I'm not sure that you said that. I think you said, get, let's get it out of the PhD. Yeah. No, I was like, "Knock yourself out after you finish your PhD- Yeah ... out of study," I think is what I should have been clearer. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Um, Ben goes on to say that, "My new job and PhD is on university study hubs, and I work with students from their HSC to their PhD in anything academic- Mm

so referencing, writing, et cetera. What's scary is not just the lack of writing skills I'm seeing from undergrads, but also the lack of understanding of concepts such as anatomical functions in biology, cause [00:16:00] and effect in engineering and history, lesson structures in education, and even how to interpret tables, charts, and graphs across the board.

It genuinely scares me that we have people graduating and working who have been handheld by machines throughout their degrees, and are entering the workforce with a credential- Mm ... but no skills." Mm. "What's even scarier is some of the workforce with a credential," uh- Sorry, so- What's even scarier, this is why you don't move the thing.

Oh, sorry, yeah. You, you move the thing. Not auto cue. I'm not trained for that. Leave the s- leave the skills. All right, I'll let you move it. Ben goes on somewhere here to say, "What's even scarier is some universities are adopting a go to town use of AI for everything approach- Mm ... to assignments at undergraduate level, which doesn't help sharpen those skills.

I'm with Inga, bloody ban it already." Mm. Ban it. Ban it. "Also, if you're all, uh, if you are all attached with academia, get out and visit study hubs. They're everywhere outside of major cities. Jason and Inga, if ever you find yourself in Newcastle again- Oh ... [00:17:00] pop in and say g'day to us at the Koori Koori Community Services Study Hub- Oh

And, you know, like, brave stance. And I'm like, "Well, what other things do you see?" And they're like, "Yeah, I don't know." Like, everyone's saying we've gotta have the conversation because- Yeah

I think, how did Ben put it? Like, the credential but no extra fees. Skills. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And that's scare- I mean, we've got doctors, we've got nurses, we've got engineers, we've got... And at the moment we've got a well-trained workforce for them to land into. Yeah. And so, like, my husband's doing a lot of [00:18:00] mentoring of the youngs 'cause he's got a depth of experience, you know?

Even- Even my kid is saying, you know, people are coming into the store. I mean, he's all of 24 going on 50. I mean, to be fair, he is 24 going on 50. Yeah. But he, he even says, you know, "Oh, they have trouble with sort of basic things." Yeah. And he's sort of like, "What's going on?" And I'm, I'm like, "Well, there's a bit of a pandemic generation sort of coming through there where their schooling was really interrupted."

Yeah. So I've got, kind of got a double whammy of that and AI maybe coming- Yeah ... through the pipe. Yeah. So those people who had a really interrupted high school experience are now in uni, and they've got to deal with this technology like it's a doozy. Mm. And again, I'd say the oligarchs want it that way.

Mm. Yeah. Well, if you're, um... If you're integrated enough with your point of sale technology and your robots now- Yeah. Mm. 'Cause you've seen the YouTube clips with the humanoid [00:19:00] robot-type things, like they're running marathons and doing karate and dancing- Yeah ... and all sorts of stuff. Yeah. Dogs with guns.

Dogs with guns. Dogs with guns. Um, uh, you don't need to know how to make change. No. And, you know, you... Well, cash, what's that? Yeah. Yeah. Ugh, okay. Um- I feel like old people yelling- ... We will. I'm gonna add it to the list of things that I've got here- Okay ... um, that we're gonna talk about. So, like, managing your supervisor. I'll put it down here. Yeah. Managing your supervisor, question mark. Well, no, she's going managing student supervision, not just your supervisor. Managing supervision.

Yeah. But we might talk about it from the student's point of view, and then, you know ... Okay. Right. Without, questions without notice. Yeah. Your one big top, pound for pound, this gives you the best, uh, bang for your buck- Mm-hmm ... in managing PhD students. Mm. What would you [00:22:00] tell n- maybe new PhD supervisors or- Mm.

Like, what should you do? Shared calendar. Yeah, okay. Nice. Like read them into every detail, even your haircuts. Yep. Yeah. Because that way you do so much less management of them. You teach them to look for gaps in your calendar- Yeah ... you know, to book their own meetings with you. Yeah. Um, and when you're doing writing, to book in when they're gonna hand the writing in to you.

Yeah. They send you a calendar invite saying, "This is arriving." Yep. They give you an estimated time of how long it's gonna take you to read. Yep. And they send you an invitation to it. Yeah, nice. Right? It's to save so much backwards and forwards, a bit of a discussion up front. Yeah. You know, y- I forget to tell Jay that I'm going on holiday, like regularly.

Mm. Like, sometimes I'll just run into him in the corridor and then I'll be like, "Oh, I'm away for the next six weeks," or something, and he's like, "Oh my God," you know? I forget that someone's sort of ... I think he's such an autonomous- Yeah, yeah ... and he is, but they kind of need you a [00:23:00] bit. Yeah. Yeah, so it helps for them to know what your movements are- Yeah

where you are and things like that, so just an easy one. Yeah. I've, um ... Similar story, I had a PhD student, and when we did the big, the big trip at, during COVID. Mm, mm. And I told him, "We're gonna be here at this time- Mm ... and here at this time, and in the middle there's no Wi-Fi or anything like that." It's like, "I'll stop for two days and that's all I've got to read."

Correct. Catechism. So this was actually a note for me. It's correct. Okay. Good to know. So knowing how to say a thing doesn't actually no- mean that I actually know what that thing is. Yeah. Well, right. So I went off to, I went off to the good folk at Encyclopedia Britannica. Excellent that they're still around.

They are. Yeah. Well, online anyway. Yeah, fine. For, for, for a definition. Um, here's what they said. Here's an extract from catechism. Uh, it was a, "A manual of religious instruction usually arranged in the form of a question- Mm ... and answers used to instruct the young, to win converts, and to testify to the faith."

Mm. "Although many religious, uh, religions give instruction in the faith by means of oral questions and answers, the written catechism is primarily a product of Christianity." It's an FAQ. It, yeah. Well, it's an FAQ when you do the- A spoken FAQ. Oh, no, no, it's a written one. Yeah, [00:25:00] yeah. Yeah. Amazing. Yeah. So you don't speak your catechism actually then?

I, I, so that's what I'm saying. As, as far as I got was the first half of the first paragraph on- ... Encyclopædia Britannica. If we have someone out there in theological studies or other religious studies, religious and philosophical studies, who would like to give us the tea on catechisms, like, we're all for it.

So our work problem today is, uh, last week we talked about bullet journal. We got some lovely mail. We talked about bullet journal, and we got some advice about what to do and how other people- Mm

do bullet journals, and they asked some questions. And so we were thinking about that a little bit- Mm ... and we were like, if you had to advise someone on how to set up a bullet journal, how would you go about doing that? Mm. And what we realized is that, which is the strength of the bullet journal, is that- Mm

it's a flexible approach. So you can kind of do it any way [00:27:00] that you want. Uh, Ryder Carroll, in his book, The Bullet Journal Method, uh, provides some structure around how to, like the actual bullets and what they mean and how you can use them. Uh, he talks about, uh, activities like migrating information from one page to another page, talks about various spreads.

And that framework wor- works really well as a high-level organizing, um, framework. But the actual way in which people use it is often really, really individualized, and they keep track of different things that people ... Uh, we've seen some the, like we've seen some works of art. Yeah. Um- People send us amazing pictures of their bullet journals.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, lots of color. People sometimes do, uh, like turn down dog ears. Mm, stencils. Um, stencils. Yeah. I'm just- Washi tape. Washi tape. Yeah. I have both washi tape and stencils- Mm ... 'cause I have terrible handwriting. Um, and so there's lots of different ways in, which is h- what makes it so wonderful because it, you understand [00:28:00] your own bullet journal really r- really well, and it works for you.

But we often have to communicate with other people and- This idea that, that's been circling around is, like, Jason, do you have more than one bullet journal? Do you have a private one- Mm ... and a work one? Mm. And then, uh, last week someone said that they have multiple bullet journals. They've got a research, um, project that's got, like, lots of sites and lots of different people and, and things getting complicated.

So we went, like, okay, who do we all have in our lives that we need to help along a little bit? And what might be a good organizing framework for a particular cohort of people that's still flexible enough for them to be able to do it their own way, to access the information, put down the information in the book, access it that's gonna work for their brain, but at the same time is still incredibly useful for a thing that they need to do.

Yeah. So what we ended up with was this idea of, like, if you had to advise your PhD student how to set one of these things [00:29:00] up- Mm ... how would you go about doing that? Mm. So we're gonna have a crack at that today. We're gonna have a crack. And, like, give us feedback on ... So we can do another one of these. We've

I say. Don't promise. I'm making promises I can't keep. Oh, God. What we've got in front of us here is a, is an iPad, iPhone staging thing- Yep ... which I've had for, I don't know, 10 years or something. Might be the third time I've ever used it. Okay, good. Excellent. Um, but you know, it cost, I don't know, 30 bucks or something.

Anyway, so there's an iPhone sitting here, and there is a bullet journal sitting here. And what we're gonna do is we're just gonna hit record on here, um, and talk you through some of the stuff. And I'm g- going to cut that into- ... at least a little window in the video- Right ... if not the actual whole screen.

Uh, with Ryder Carroll saying, "This is why you use these things so that you can col- collect those two things in the middle." Then we move on to- To one of the most important parts of the bullet journal, this humble page.

It's pretty light ruling here, you can [00:32:00] see. Uh, what is this page for, Jason? This is where you write your note to the person who's gonna find your bullet journal. Generally when you leave it somewhere. Yeah. A shout-out to my sister Anitra- Mm-hmm ... who- Put all her details, including your phone number, don't forget your phone number, and left her bullet journal, I think on the train.

Oh, yes. Got a call later that morning just when she realized that she, it had gone missing. Yeah And she was like, "Oh, fuck my life." And I think she was even texting me like, "My bullet journal's gone. Oh my God," cry face emoji. Someone texted her, a fellow Bujo owner- Oh, wow. Yeah ... who picked it up and went, "I know- Oh, yeah

what this means to you." Yeah. And they had an exchange, and it was a beautiful thing. Oh, nice. Yeah. So there's like a exchange of hostages- Yeah ... but you know, in a good way. Anyway, so I usually write, "I love you forever. Please return my bullet journal. You don't understand- Yeah ... this means so much to me." Like, really like so that person can't ignore it.

Yep. Yeah. I, um, I picked up on, you sh- you showed me that [00:33:00] once. Mm. And I was like, "Oh, that's a good idea." Mm. Um, just on lost bullet journals, I have a Chipolo Spot card, which is like a credit card size, um, taped in bright pink, uh, gaffer tape on the back of mine- Yeah ... um, that I can use with Find My, uh, Apple Find My service.

So I can, if I was to ever leave it somewhere, I know exactly where it got left. Or if someone was to pick it up and steal it, there's a special place in hell for you. Yeah. But i- if someone was to do that, I could track it. Yeah. Um, so and then I could set the police- Or you ... police onto them. Yeah. Or my dog.

Or your dog. She's really scary. Killer. Yeah, she does. She goes, "Ah." Yeah. So on this next page we've got a key page here, and what I really like about this, these bullet journals, they're from Leuchtturm, I think that's how you say it, is that it's got the standard notation, which I mean, honestly me, when I first started a bullet journal I didn't use.

I didn't realize- Oh ... that was the whole point. Yes. [00:34:00] And then you told me that. Yeah. And then you're like, you, but you cross it off though. And then you showed it to me and I'm like, "Oh." Oh. So like I highly recommend you actually follow these. So every task has a dot. When it's completed, you put a cross through it.

If you haven't completed it but you want to move it to the next day, you do a chevron like that. Um, I don't use this task scheduled one, but it's a good idea. So yeah. So with the, the reverse schedule pointing to the left- Mm ... um, usually at the front of your bullet journal you might have m- mapped out a spread, like a monthly spread.

Mm. Um, and so I've got 12 of those in the fr- and actually I think I've got 15. Mm. I think I've got- The year plus three months- Mm ... because of the, the turnover thing. Um, and so when you, let's say it's, uh, July, is it, uh, August. Today- Mm. Mm ... 1st of August. Let's say it's August, um, and you supposed to do a thing, and you haven't done the thing, and you realize you're not gonna do the thing until September.

You would put that little reverse chevron, left-facing chevron. [00:35:00] You'd go back to your September spread- Mm ... and then you would write the thing in your September spread. Mm. Monthly spread. Mm. And so as you move through your bullet journal, when it comes to September, you look at your monthly spread for September, and you go, "Oh, yes, don't forget to do the thing."

We're gonna get to monthly spreads. Yes. Um, but yes, I don't use it, and I've survived. I love it. Which goes to show- I use it all the time ... right, goes to show how people even with the basics don't necessarily do it the same way. Um, when something's just a note, like just something recorded information of some sort, just a little line- Yep

or a hyphen, um, an event has a circle. Yep. And something with priority gets, like, a little thing. Again, I don't use this priority thing. Anyway, but the idea with this key page here is that you can add more of your own. Mm. So you can have all sorts of notations, or you can put stickers- Mm ... and say what the stickers mean, if you like.

Mm. This, um, this book also has an intentions page on the next page, which I ignore. And we go straight to the index. I'm gonna come back to the index, but I just wanna say [00:36:00] before we do go on further, the key, key difference between a bullet journal and any other kind of notebooks is the index. Yep. Fucking genius.

I mean- Agreed. Yes ... this alone is- Hard agree ... if, if you only do this- Yep ... your notebooks become infinitely better. Yep. So you build the index as you go, and I'm gonna show you how you do that. Right. So we go, there's a couple of indexes pages for the rest of the book. You've got a future log here. Yep. But- I don't think we're gonna talk about that this time, but- Things that you wanna do in the future

things that you wanna do. Like, that might set your intentions for the year. And here we are on our first Um, our first day, uh, daily log Yep So you can see we've got a couple of things going on in our daily log, if you're looking on YouTube. At the top we've got the date. Yes. And then we've got shoot this BuJo ep.

Yes . Right? Which, in progress. It's in progress, so I'm not gonna cross it off. We'll cross it off at the end. Once it's done. Yeah, yeah. We had Ace coming to visit Latte. Yep. Puppy Ace, [00:37:00] beagle Ace, and Latte visited. Yep. Yeah. So when I've had an event, you can see I'm using the circle there, I usually just put a line through it that that happened.

Oh yeah, nice. You don't have to. You can just leave it there. In case you wanted to track it. But later on if you go back, you go, "Oh, I did that." You wanted to track. Yeah, I was supposed to catch up with Jason and he- Yeah ... he ghosted me. He ghosted me. Which I did to someone the other day, so sorry about that, Ben.

But, you know Um, Luke was going to Bunnings, and this goes to show you can mix personal and professional in there. So, uh, my husband Luke was going to Bunnings, and he was gonna get some puppy fencing, 'cause we've got a fence that isn't... As it turns out, the puppy's too tiny. She can get through the bars in the fence.

Oh. So he's gone to Bunnings, and he's actually doing that right now, so I'm gonna mark that as done. Yep. Um, and that's your basic bullet journal really here. And we're gonna talk about something later on- Yep ... that's like a future thing, and I don't think that's gonna get done today. No, no. No. So I'm gonna migrate that- To tomorrow

to tomorrow. [00:38:00] Yep. Then I'm gonna pick up, uh, and I'm gonna make tomorrow's, and I'll look at, back at the few past days, and I'm just gonna pick up that task and put it there. Yeah. Right. Um- Um, production note. Yes? Where's the light in your light switch for your light here so that we don't have the shadow problem?

Under there. Over there? I think it's gonna make the shadow problem worse. This one? Oh, 'cause this light. Yeah. It's b- let's see. Let's see. Mm, yeah, it's better. Okay. Okay. Um- Look, look at us, professional Look so professional. Okay, so, so that's a daily log, and you can just keep adding things to it. Mm. Like, is there anything else coming up for today that we've gotta do?

No. No. No. It's a Saturday. Yeah. Thank God. Always here for you to work. Okay, so that's your basic daily log. Um, and so I could just write a note, and you told me something about the bullet journal there where you task schedule, task schedule, um, schedule, schedule- Mm ... notation [00:39:00] Right? Um, means Uh, um, put on feature log Yep And so that's me taking a note about what you said so I can remember it.

Yeah, and so the point here is that you don't run a blow-by-blow detail of your day like you might in a calendar kind of diary, like in a office diary. It's not, you know, Hannah turned up at 12:04 to 12:19 and bought Ace along for puppy love. Yeah. Like, you don't keep it at that level. Like, you only just kind of keep the things that are meaningful through the day- Yeah

or that you need to keep track of. Yeah. Stuff, yeah. Um, so that you can flick back on a day and go, "Oh, I remember when Hannah came and she bought, like, Latte the, the little King Kong toy." Yeah. So cute. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. But you don't need [00:40:00] this big long journal e- like entry about that. You're not taking minutes from a meeting or anything.

No. So this is different. This, I mean, although having said that, I have got, um, some older bullet journals where what I do is I get to the end of the week and I do do one of those kind of long-form reflection- Yeah ... what have I, what have I done this week, blah, blah. Mindfulness kind of activities. Yeah, yeah.

Yeah. But your day-to-day stuff, you're just, like, keeping track of stuff. Yeah. Sometimes I just do this when I'm listening to someone. Mm. So that it helps me focus and listen to them. Mm. I'm little tiny bit ADHD. Okay. Um, so, you know, I talked to you yesterday about sometimes with ADHD, um, it's easier to focus if your body's doing something.

Yeah, yeah. Yeah? So I described it as, like, throwing a little ball for the golden retriever that is your brain. And so I find even just the micro movements of writing down enables me to stay in the moment with the person much more easily. Mm. Hot tip. Hot tip. [00:41:00] Mm. Tell the person that you're talking to that you're gonna do that, because otherwise it looks like you're keeping notes on them.

Yeah, but- And some people can go, like some people get- Yeah, they get a bit uptight. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. I don't know. I never do. People just ... Uh, this is professor privilege. Right. You're just allowed to. People don't question- No, no ... what you're doing. Smart people doing things. And, and so every day you start off, I just start with the date, and whatever comes at me- Yeah

lands on the page. Yep. Yeah, in whatever order. And the good thing about coming back is you can very quickly see that's a task that hasn't been finished. That one's been completed. That one needs to be migrated. It's really straightforward. And, um, that does not end up back on one of these index pages though, does it, Jason?

No, because it's just a kind of a log of what happened. Otherwise, you'd have 100 pages of index, and what would be the point? Right. And then you're keeping track of ... Like, it's too micro. Yeah. So the point of an index is that you're collecting across your bullet journal maybe themes. So every time you might have, like [00:42:00] every time you write something about Latte- Yeah

in your bullet journal because- She's cute. Yeah. Look, she's asleep over there. So on page 14, and then on page 28, and then on page 29, 30, 33, 34, 35. Like, every page where Inga writes something about latte, she would have an entry at the front with latte, and then just the page numbers after that. Yeah. I'll demonstrate that now, shall I?

Mm, sure. All right. So our next, um, thing that we do is a collection. Right, so this is a collection that I've started for this episode, so these are the things that we wanna talk about in this episode. Yep. Right? So we've talked about name and contact details, which is the first one at the top. I'm gonna put a cross through that.

Yep. That's done. We've talked about the index. We've kind of talked about it. Yep. But I don't think it's quite done yet. We're gonna show you. I'm gonna put a cross through daily log. Yep, because we did that. Yeah, we talked that. Um, and now we're talking about collections. What I do with collections, so collection is a page that's just dedicated to a theme.

So a [00:43:00] collection can be anything. In this case I'm using it to compile my show notes. Yep. But it could be, a collection could be the meeting notes with your supervisor as a PhD student. Yep. So that could be a series of collections. You could have the m- meeting and the date. Yep. And that's a collection, and then you can go back and, you know, and everything that happened during that meeting can be collected in the index.

What I do with collections is I put a square around the heading. Oh, okay. Yep. So when I'm flicking through my book, I can immediately see where the collections are. Yeah. Right? So then I'd go back, I'd look at the number here, it's 14. Page 14? Yep, which, you know, the pages add up pretty quick in these things.

If I go back to the first page of the index, all right? The first, which is this page here, I'm gonna put 14, and then I'm just gonna write Bullet Journal Episode- Journal So immediately you can [00:44:00] see that this is Inga's way of doing it, and I deeply disagree with it Okay Because I would put bullet journal episode first.

Yes And then I would follow it with the page number, because your collection for those episodes might get longer and longer and longer. Yeah So you haven't left enough space between 14 and the next time it turns up, which might be on page 63. Yeah. What I do then is I squeeze it up here. Right. Or sometimes I add a d- note.

You know what I do? I add it over the end here. Do you know why I do that? Why? 'Cause I want these numbers to line up. Why? That's a little bit- Because they have to, James Why? They do not have to. See? It doesn't matter. Horses for courses. So the point of a collection- We're gonna come back to it. Yes But say I fill this page up, right?

I've filled all this page. I've made note, note, note, note, note, note, note, note, note, note, note. Yes. Yep. I've got another collection emerging over on this page here, which is the editing for, [00:45:00] editing notes for this episode, right? Yep. So I'm gonna say, um, sorry editing Inga on here. Hmm. Now ... Okay, I've put a note there.

Sorry, editing Inga. Yes. All right? So I've filled this page up, but I've still got more to say. Yeah, yeah. So what do I do now? I just go to the next empty page. Herein lies the genius of the bullet journal, um, method, and I put bullet journal up the top here. Journal ep-

It's silence You maybe wanna narrate it for our listeners. So the, what's happening here in the background, if you're not watching, is that Inga has repeated the title of the collection that she wants to continue on with, um, on a non-sequential page. Yes. So it wasn't, she didn't do it on page 15. She picked it up again on page 16.[00:46:00] 

So, um, what this means is that she can look on page 14. I- in her index, it'll go 14, 16, same title, same, uh, collection title, and she knows that she just flicks through to that. And why that becomes, um, important is because your bullet journal can sometimes ... You might start a collection because you know it's gonna be useful for you in the future.

Like- Yeah ... you might start a collection called data, for example, uh, before you've even started collecting data for your PhD, and that might start on page 15 or something like that, but you might not get to it until, you know- Page 54 ... well into your candidature. Yeah. And it could be, like, 154 or something.

Yeah. But then your initial notes were on page whatever I said, um, and then the next time they turn up is on page 154. Instead of flicking through your bullet journal to find out where the next page is, just go to your index and you go, started on page 14. Next page [00:47:00] is page 154. You ignore all the stuff that's in the middle because that's not relevant for what you're looking for.

Yeah. So you just find the information that you want at the time that you want it. So Jason would have written bullet journal episode and then the number- Right ... but I write 16 after this. Right. Right? So that starts on page 14. Now I remember why I do it this way. Starts on page 14. Okay. And then there's subsequent pages, right?

Okay. But the key thing, and one thing that Ryder Carol- Carol says in his book, is this concept of threading, which is always re- weirdly hard to explain. That's tiny there, but that says 16. Yep. I'm gonna put a forward slash here, um, and actually I'm gonna put it here and I'm gonna put 14 here, which means going backwards it's 14, and then

And I'm gonna rub that out. Anything that's forwards ends- To pr- ... up there. So, so I can come in here and go, okay, well, I've landed on this page, but actually a previous page was 14, and you can then follow things backwards and forwards through the bullet journal. So, um, so if you've got meetings with your [00:48:00] supervisor, you can go, "What meeting was that, that we talked about X?"

Yeah. Right? And you can say, "Oh, it was ... I can start with this meeting. Oh, no, it was a couple weeks before that." Yeah. And you can just follow the meetings all the way through your bullet journal. It's kind of like breadcrumbs on a w- Mm ... on, like, on a website, right? You know? Right. Like, I've come from here.

Yeah. And so you can go, oh yeah, I wanna go back to that one. Yeah. And then that one, when you go back to it, gives you, oh, I can go back to the one before that. But then you could also go forward back to where you were started again. Yes. Exactly. So depending on if you happen to open up, as Inga was saying, if you happen to open up your bullet journal and it's in the middle somewhere, and you go, oh, okay- Oh, no, I remember it was later than that- Mm

or it was earlier than that. You just go kind of flick back through it. Mm. Mm. Because your title on the, in the index of the collection doesn't necessarily always get down to the fine level detail that lets you know what's actually inside that, that collection. That's right. That's right. Yeah. So, um, I'm just gonna do one other type of [00:49:00] log before we move on to maybe other things.

Okay. I can go back to my... But, um, I think it's always very useful to do monthly, a monthly log. Yes. Yeah. So since it's the start of August, perfect time to start that. I just write at the top August, and it's 2026. And I just start across the page and it's just number, the number of days in the month So for those listening at home, Inga is just writing down the left-hand side of the page, one, two, three, four, five, all the way to 30 days of September, April- There- 31.

I was about to ask you that I had to learn the thing. I was like, "How many days again?" Look, there's a knuckle thing that you can do, isn't it? It's like January, like if you press your like knuckle, the first knuckle on your hand, January has 31 days. February is the g- the dip between your knuckles. Yeah

that's like got less days. Yeah Then March has 31 days again, so [00:50:00] your knuckle points up. April has less days. May is a bumpy one and that's got 31 days. The gap b- That's super complicated, man. No way, man. It's like, it's like lots of numbers in, lots of days, not so many days, lots of days, not so many days.

That makes no sense to me. I just say 30 days have September, April, June and November. All the rest have 31 days. Right. So I'm just like, except for January. Uh, February. Except for February, which has 28 day clear, 29 in each leap year. Right. But if you go January 31, the next dot, latest depression in your knuckles- Yeah

depression, is February. Never has 31 days. Oh. So all the ones- It's probably too late in life for me to learn this ... Yep. So it's a three-day boot camp. Um, and I'm also going down to Melbourne on this day, and I usually do the weekends like that. Yep. I do a little, like bracket, square bracket, and I just say Melbourne- Yep ... for the weekend Yeah So where this, uh, where you can start to think about what your year looks like, for example.

So as a PhD student, we would have, at the start of my, um, bullet journals, I would usually start them on the kind of 1st of January. Um, I would have one of these for every month, and so as a PhD student, you might know that your graduate school runs the confirmation of candidature, uh, in a particular week- Yeah

of a particular month. Oh, yeah, that's a good idea, actually. Yeah. So what, what you might do is, like, right at the very start- Yeah ... you, you, like, you roll up on day one- Yeah ... and your supervisor says, "Hey, [00:54:00] girlfriend, hey." Yeah. "You've got this thing coming up. We always know it's within this week of this particular month."

Mm. "Put it in your bullet journal." Mm. And so it might be, I don't know, let's say it's O- October. It's always in the first week of October. Yeah. And so you can just go to October, put it in there- Yeah ... and it's just there. Yeah. And you can go back, and you can see. I do, I have a version of this for all of our jobs that get pre-booked.

So sometimes what happens is someone will ring us in the start of the year, and they'll say, "We want you to come and do this thing, uh, but we don't want you to come until August," or something like that. And so I, I put the job in, in the monthly spread in August. So by the time I get to August, I'm like, "Oh, yeah, that's right, we gotta go to-" University of Newcastle, and we have to do this- So if you put these all together at the start.

Yeah. So the first sort of 12 pages are like the year. Yep. Genius, I'm gonna start doing that. Yeah, like- See, we should have done this episode ages ago. Yeah, but- Yeah ... and then, [00:55:00] um, I just, I keep one of the little tassels. Yes, we didn't mention the tassels, but here they are. I'm gonna break them apart for the first time.

Um, and I just keep it- Keep it there ... on, on the spot where I need to get to- Yeah ... so I can just find it again. Absolutely, and I usually keep, like, one of the tassels, like this one's got three, which is awesome. Like, I keep, I, I pick my favorite color, which in this case is yellow. Oh, look, it's so new. I have to break them apart.

And I always keep that on the day that we're ... So I always know- Oh, your actual date ... my favorite color is the actual date. Oh, yeah. And, you know, and I keep that one, um, another color on the monthly spread- Yep ... 'cause I go back to this so many times. Yeah, yeah. This is usually where I've worked out that I've double-booked myself.

Yep. Uh, that I've got things that are too close together, that cars are crashing- Yeah ... on the work superhighway. Um, so that is, uh, we've gone for half an hour, look at that, already, just talking about really basic stuff. Yep. Now, you were talking to me about this idea of [00:56:00] a tool set for PhD students. Yeah.

Tell me more about what you think we should do there. So one of the things is, um, that's so awesome about the bullet journal is it's basically a blank book, and you get to put into it whatever it is that you need to put into it. Um, but we were talking about this over breakfast this morning. Mm. Um, wouldn't it be cool if these bullet journals for PhD students came kind of preloaded with some common tools that you might need to use during your PhD?

Yep. So, uh, so s- a couple that we were talking about included, so maybe concept mapping. You, you might not know what concept mapping is, and so if you just had in your bullet journal just, uh, one page on concept mapping, maybe a quick example of what a concept map is, how it's used, and why you would use one.

That just kind of is just somewhere in your bullet journal. To remember, so a useful kind of diagramming technique. So I'm gonna do that now. I'm gonna go to the next page, because we don't care what page [00:57:00] things are on. But, but- Because they're all numbered. That's right, and the, your index picks all that stuff up.

Yeah. And so you don't- That was the hardest thing for me- Yeah ... was what I would find is that, um, I would be working my way linearly through the year, and I would be filling in every page of my bullet journal. Yeah. And then I would go, I'd get to a week, and I'd go, oh, actually, I need to keep that page blank because I know a thing's gonna happen.

Yeah. Yeah. On, like, on the Thursday or something like that- Yeah, yeah ... right? And then, so I'd skip- You end up with these weird gaps You end up with these weird gaps. And then you can't find the gap, and you're like, "I know I left a gap," and then you realize you left it in the wrong spot. Yeah. We've all done this.

Like- Or- ... if you're watching this, and you've not used a bullet journal, you know what we're talking about ... or you've forgotten that you actually left the gap, and the reason- Mm ... that you left the gap, and you just forgot that you did that, and so you just start a new page. Yeah. And so the, that gap now no longer has a purpose.

Yeah. So- And then you get worried 'cause you're like, "What was in the gap?" H- what happened to my brain? Yeah. So what [00:58:00] I ended up doing was, like, I had to talk to myself long and hard about this, was, um, just go back to, like, you could be 100 pages along- Mm ... and you go, oh, I need to write a note about a thing that's relatively important, and you flick through your book until you find a gap, and you're like, it's gonna be on that one.

And so- Yeah ... chronologically through the year as you're filling your bullet journal, you might be up to page 238, but that gap turns up on page 98 or 94 or something like that. And so you just go back to 94, fill it in, and then in your index, you just go Important idea, page 94. Yeah. And it doesn't matter that it's all out of...

Like, it doesn't have to be numerically- No ... like- 'Cause you've got an index- You've got an index ... just as I said. Fucking genius. Fucking genius. So concept mapping tool. Yes. Let's show you what a concept map is. You introduced me to this, and now it's a regular feature of our bullet ca- ca- uh, bullet. B- Bullet camps.

Bullet camps. No, there's no such thing as a bullet camp. That would be a bad idea. Bullet journals are great. Bullet camps, not so much. Not so much? Um, so [00:59:00] with regular part of our thesis- Thesis boot camp ... boot camp, and I imported it, actually your idea into the ANU boot camp. You're welcome, ANU. Uh. Um, so let me show you very simply.

Li- licensing agreement? Good. N- no. No. Hmm. Um, so for instance, a concept map- Maybe, maybe I'll explain the concept map audiolo- audiologically. Well, I'll speak about it. You dr- you draw the one. I'll draw it. Okay. And so we're gonna do- Yeah ... one on dogs and people. Yeah, that's right. Okay. Yeah. Most people are familiar with a mind map, and a mind map, you would normally put a concept in the middle, and then you would have these little arms that come off.

And, uh, they, those arms would then have another circle at the end of them. So and somehow those two concepts are related to one another. So you might have dog in the middle. There's dog. And then there's a line, and then you might have people. Yeah, so I'm gonna do that. Yeah. So dogs and people, I'm gonna put a line.

They're connected. They have a relationship with each other. They're connected, and they have a relationship. Thousands of years- Yeah ... of [01:00:00] relationship, and which I'm plugging into with young Latte- Uh ... because, like, so many years our human ancestors have created Stockholm syndrome- ... in these small furry bodies, so they love...

You are an oppressor- Yeah, yeah ... actually. You know? Yeah. You're offering the food, but only if you do what I want. And so she's got generations of, like, little dog behavior. Hmm. She's programmed deeply to be amusing and to please me. That's the breed. Yeah, yeah. She's a Cotonde Tulear. Look it up. Okay.

Madagascan royalty. Refused to let peasants own them, because they're bred to be amusing- Okay ... and to love you- All right ... probably too much. Okay. Okay. So dogs and people are connected. Dogs and people are connected. So we can indicate which way they're connected, can't we, by making an arrow. So people, um, are connected to dogs.

Yep. And dogs are connected to people. It's a two-way relationship in this case. Now, in a m- mind map, usually that's not how it works. You have a parent node, and then all the nodes, all the lines that come off it are regarded as child or sibling nodes. Hmm. [01:01:00] And so when you look at a m- a traditional mind map, you go, "There is some sort of relationship here."

Hmm. Maybe hierarchical relationship. Hmm. But, but there's no way of knowing what that relationship is. That relationship's not described anywhere. Hmm. It's just that they're connected- Hmm ... in a way. Where concept maps are different is that you label the line- Yeah ... that joins the two things together. So I'm gonna label this line love.

We love each other Yeah. So dogs and people, like, there's a... And so what you've got is these two concepts, dogs and people, and they're joined by this- A double-headed arrow ... double-headed arrow of love. But you could have other relationships with the same- Yes ... with the same two things. Yes. Let's draw another relationship.

I'm gonna say I'm drawing a line, a big arch over the top like a rainbow. Yeah. And it's not the shape of the line that matters, it's the, uh... it's just the fact that the two things are connected, which means that your concept maps can be quite disordered in terms... is like this line [01:02:00] joins to this one- Mm

over here. You can move around things. I'll often, in a line, if one line has to cross another one, I'll do the, like, this looks like- A little speed bump ... a little bridge. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. So that, that's like we- I stole that off you ... we're not intersecting. Yeah. We're going over, they're around. Yeah. So it can be quite messy, but the relationships between the concepts still hold.

Yeah. And you can see that visually. So this line here, I'm gonna say goes that way. Yep. And then I'm just gonna put this here

And so what Inga has written is that the line between dogs starts and is narrow to people, and she's written, "Dogs are better than." So dogs, concept, better than, the line, people. And so you can look at this and you can go, "Ah, the relationship between dogs and people is that Inga thinks, for whatever reason, dogs are better than people."

Yes. Well, I-- whatever reason, I know they are. Um, dogs are some [01:03:00] of the best people you'll ever meet. Okay, so if we go back here to our index, we can see, well, we've got bullet journal 14 and 16. We've got a little collection here, which is the OTR app, so we're gonna put that in there. On page 15. So 15, in the way that I know upsets Jason.

Yes. Um, editing notes. Don't do it like that.

I-- and then we're gonna go, okay, what's on page ... So that was page 16. Page, so page 16's already, and then we've got page 17, which is August log. August log. So we just put 17 here, August log.

And then page 18, concept map example. So every time you go, "Oh, what's a concept map? How do I spell it?" Like that. Yes, correct. Um, [01:04:00] example. So if you are a PhD student, um, and you wanna talk to your supervisor, "Oh, I learned this awesome thing on, on the Reg Pod," you should listen- Yeah ... about concept maps. You can go into your bullet journal and you can show them what the concept map looks like.

Find it straight away. Yeah. So the idea that we had over breakfast was that, uh, you might pre-format your bullet journal, and you might just spread these at random through your bullet journal. Yeah Like, 'cause it doesn't matter, 'cause you've got an index. You're creating your own index. And you might have one, like here's one on concept maps, and all it does is, like, as you're reading through it, you go, "Oh, look, yeah, concept maps."

Yeah. Or you might come across... What was the one that you called it, the daisy? Bedraggled daisy. Shall we do that? Yeah, let's do the bedraggled daisy. Yeah. All right. So the bedraggled daisy comes from Kirsten Luca's Salsa Dancing in the Social Sciences. Oh, okay. Again, a book that doesn't get much show outside of the social sciences- Mm-hmm

but would be useful for anyone. Yep. People [01:05:00] love this. Yep. Uh, they particularly love how I draw it, 'cause then they make me draw it again and draw it again because- ... yeah. So the idea is that every thesis topic is the intersection of many other topics. Yeah. Right? Yeah. So, um, a bedraggled daisy, um, Luca says, is a way to sort of show exactly what your niche is.

Hmm. Right? The way you draw one is like this. You do one oval down like that. You're, you're narrating. So people at home, it's a elongated n- uh, oval. That's vertical on the page. Vertical, north-south. And then you do a horizontal one. Starting to look a little bit like atoms crossing. You know? Yeah, it does, actually.

Yeah. And then you do another one at an angle. So really starting to look like electron paths in an atom. Yeah. Yeah. And then you do a last one there. So if you're fans of the, uh, Big Bang Theory, you'll recognize this as looking like the- Yeah ... the atom thing on the front of the Big Bang Theory. Yeah. And I'm gonna call it daisy diagram up here.

Now, the genius of this is to [01:06:00] say, uh, AM... Mm-hmm. The genius of this is to say, what are the intersections between the topics? Yeah. So say I'm researching dogs and people. Sure. We'll stick with that theme. Yep. So give me some ideas of search terms you might say. Okay, my research project is why is Latte so cute?

Right. Right. So Latte is a small dog. Very small. Right? She's two kilos and she's adorable. Okay. Not yet two kilos. You said the other day. What? Not yet... No, she's exactly two kilos. Oh, okay. She was 1.6 when we got her, now she's two. Oh, okay. Okay. So she's a small dog. So- Beefing, beefing up Jack and I. So I might say small dog here.

Yep And I might say large dog here. Yep. So Inga's filling out the outer leaves of the, of this diagram, if you like. Yeah, so I might say- So petals. Petals is the word ... let's say it's a history of small dogs here. Yep. And a history of large dogs here. [01:07:00] In the intersection- Between the histories of large dogs and small dogs

it's like maybe what are the differences between them? Yep. Or what are the intersections, what are the relationships between- Maybe ... large and small dogs? Genetics. Yeah, genetics of dogs, or, you know, you just, there's a relationship between the dogs there. Yeah. Maybe there's a history of, uh, big dogs eating small dogs.

Yes. I don't know. Sounds like something I would- So this analogy- Yeah. ... is already falling apart. So we've got, um, maybe we've got, um, uh, owners. You've got w- yes. Yeah. Or working dogs versus- Or we've got working dogs, yeah ... versus amusement dogs. Yeah. Working dogs, um, versus, um, amusement dogs, which mine is definitely an amusement dog.

You met a working dog today. So in, again, this is the outer ring of the bedraggled diagram. Yes. But, uh, Daisy, that Inga was filling out. Yes. So starting with these bigger ideas, I'm presuming- [01:08:00] Yes ... um, around the outside. Yeah. And then there's intersections between each of those. Yeah. So we say, well, which of the large dogs are working dogs?

Yeah. So then you've got large working dogs here. Yep. Yeah. Like border collies. Yeah, border collie dogs. Yep. And then what's the intersection between amusement dogs and working dogs? Yep. What, are there dogs that are both? Yes. So we're gonna explore both, question mark. Yep. And then if you look at these, this one here is the intersection of all of these.

So for those listening at home, it's the intersection of not only the large scale ideas, but also the intersection of the intersection between those large scale ideas. Yeah, so you're sort of bringing it up to one point. So you- It's, it's intersections all the way down. So you might, these, this might, ho- this whole thing might be, um, um, useful dogs.

Useful dogs? Yeah So you can see how it starts to organize things. [01:09:00] Yeah. The valuable thing about this is I often advocate the da- bedraggled daisy diagram as a way to keep track of your search terms in your literature- Oh, yeah. That's smart ... because your, your topic is this bit. It's the intersection of all of those things.

Yeah, yeah. Right. And so, and by putting it down visually, I imagine that that just makes it easier for you to kind of step back from. You're not down in the detail of all of those little pieces. But it also helps you ask interesting questions- Mm ... like, has anyone looked at the dif- the amusement dogs and the working dogs?

Mm. Which ones are both? And so we encourage people to just take their list of search terms. Like, they'll have a list. Yeah. And then just plonk them together, and you start to go, "Oh, what are ... What would be the intersection of those things?" Yeah. So it starts to ... It's like a creativity tool. Yeah. Um, other way that we've used it is we've had, um, at boot camp, for instance, we have people write different aspects of their topic on alternate daisies.

Oh, yes. Right? [01:10:00] And then they start to see these really fruitful intersections, and then we make them do, like, a ... We ... At ANU, make them do, like, a, a 20-minute exercise where they work up a whole research project- Oh, yeah ... and then we pitch them. Oh, okay. Right? And then they green-light. So we've had, you know, um, uh, feminist Marxist theorists on Mars.

Oh, yeah. You know, and then we go, "Okay, we've got a ridiculous research topic, but we want you to take it seriously. What would you actually do?" It's fun, and it really makes you think of creative- How would you collect data? ... research, yeah, yeah. Which methods would you use? And people get to know each other, and they have fun.

Okay. Anyway, it's nerd fun. So that's the daisy diagram. Again, I can draw a square around that because that's my practice. Because that's a- And then- ... it's a collection ... a collection. And then I upset Jason again by writing, going back to my index. And doing her weird notation. And doing my weird notation. So it's page 19.

Page 19. So- Daisy example ... so the daisy example might turn up on, in, on page 19. [01:11:00] Mm. But Inga might decide that there's a, a particular set of intersections that she really likes, and that this is going to be the thing that she takes forward. Yep. And so she would connect that daisy intersection diagram- Mm

bedraggled da- Why is it bedraggled? I don't know. That's what she called it. Okay. Um- Ask Kirsten Luca. Okay. Kirsten, you're on notice. Um, the the, like, the initial concept- diagram of the di- of the, uh, Daisy is on page 19. Mm. But then her, uh, Inge's ideas about the way in which these things intersect might turn up as notes.

Mm. Just like a, just a s- a stock standard note page- Yeah ... where she talks about the intersection between history of large dogs and working dogs, for example, and she's just writing everything she knows about border collies. Yeah. So we might, for instance, look up a bo- a book about small dogs. My sister sent me a, a book that's just about to be published- Oh, yeah

since I now own a small dog. Yes. And it's called Yap: A [01:12:00] Short History of Small Dogs. So say I bought that book. It should be called A Small History of Short Dogs. Sh- Would be a better title. Now I'm confused. Uh- Oh, you can't remember. Um- A short history- Short history- ... of small dogs ... history of small dogs. I, I would, I would like a short, a small history...

No, a short history of small... No. A short... I would like a small history of short dogs. All right. Let's just do one more thing, Jason. Right. So you, you've been doing some videos for a secret, super-secret project that we're doing. I have, yes. Super-secret. Super-secret. And you did a thing about notes and metadata.

Mm-hmm. And so you can do, put metadata in a bullet, bullet journal note. Nothing's stopping you. Yeah. So by metadata, it's like what date did you read it? Date started. Yeah? Yep. So say, say I ordered this book and I get it on the 31st of August. I've got 31st of August. What other metadata would you put, [01:13:00] um, in this on?

Um, you might give it some sort of rating, uh, for usefulness, for example. Yeah. And so you- And you could use stars. Like we... This is a four-star book. Yeah. And you don't have to fill it in when you just, you just put usefulness. Um, and then you leave it empty- Yep ... until you've read it. And then you- So you might just put in a number of stars.

Yep. Yeah. And then you might have another one which is key concept. Yeah. Key, key words maybe. Yeah. Key words. So what, what we're trying to show here is that it doesn't necess- This is not just another place to collect your references. Like, you notice we haven't said who the author is, when it was published, a- any of that.

Yeah. What we're collecting is our own experience of this particular book- Yeah ... with the da- with the metadata. Because you don't capture, maybe you don't capture that sort of stuff in your Zotero database- Yeah ... or wherever. Yeah. And you can capture it here. You can write your notes about it, and then you can lift it into some other f- like Zotero, if you wanna put these- Yeah

some of these notes, like, or [01:14:00] into Obsidian- Yeah ... or somewhere else, should you want to. Yeah. Or you could take a photo of it. You could. And you can put it in AI. But that's a thing for another day. Different thing altogether. Um, all right. So that, they'll have to watch your other video that you're making.

Yes. Um- Super secret video. Super secret video. So we can generate a set of metadata that we find useful as we're reading the book. For instance, you can do things like make a note. Yep. See, that's just a line there. Yep. And you could say, uh, you could ask yourself a question like, why has the cover, uh, cover got a Rococo lady on it?

It's like all of my things. So lady on the front. I don't even know what that is. What is the one, a Rococo? She's got, like, the hair up, piled up on the top of her head. You know, like- Yeah ... you know, like- Like a beehive. Yeah, like a beehive, and she's in frilly clothes. She's in the 18th century. Okay. She's got white makeup with a pads- With a dot.

You know, with all that. It's that era. Okay. My master's degree was all about Rococo architecture. Really? Yeah, it was. Okay. I love it. Oh, okay. [01:15:00] That's why I've got that porcelain cabinet full of Rococo. Right. Okay. Yeah. Became this running joke. My friends just started giving me porcelain Rococo. Giving you porcelain

And then I started... Like, it's the ugliest thing you've ever seen, but then you start to love it- Ah ... in this weird, perverse sort of way. Okay. Uh, um, so why has the cover got a... on it, right? You can ask yourself little rhetorical questions. Yeah. And, and then you can answer your questions, you know? Like, um, Small Dogs are coded Rococo, right?

Like- People think of the Rococo small fluffy dogs, the Rococo's, when they were first started to be bred for ladies to hold them on their laps. Fun fact- Fun fact ... um, dogs have a higher body temperature than humans. Do they? Yeah. All dogs? All dogs do. Uh- How much higher? Uh, just a little bit, like- Oh, okay ... a few.

Yeah. All right. It's a lot. So slightly higher body temp. So, um, so fancy Rococo- So- ... ladies would have fleas 'cause humans had fleas back then, right? Good. So we think that the small dog is there for the Rococo [01:16:00] lady to pat and feed- Yeah, yeah ... and treat like it's a baby. Yeah. And yes, that is the purpose of the small Rococo fluffy dog.

Yes. But also, fleas are attracted to higher temperature. Oh, it's a f- It's a flea attractor ... a flea transfer device. Yes. So what would happen is, the fleas would jump off the fancy lady- Onto the dog ... onto the dog, and the grooming that you do would be-- 'cause the, the human fleas can't live on dogs and vice versa.

Like, our fleas are not interchangeable. But the fleas will go to the dog, like, like mosquitoes will go towards the light. Mm. So the ladies would be able to see the fleas. So the non-human-- so the human fleas w- Would flee, literally- ... to the dog. Ba dum tss. Yeah. Even though it's a not, it's not a human. Correct.

Just because it's hot. And it would become visible, and then it'll start to try and get off the dog. Right. And then the lady could kill the fleas one by one. Yeah. Hence, taking all the fleas off her own body, no longer being scratchy and itchy- Yeah, yeah ... and [01:17:00] seeing them. And the dogs tended to be white, so you could see the fleas.

It was engineering, Jason. No, it was- It wasn't just 'cause they were little baby replacements or anything. No, those ladies were fucking smart. They were like, "I'm scratchy. I don't like it. If I keep a small dog on my lap, also cute." Bred to amuse. Has it totally changed your perception of what small dogs are for now?

Yes, but I'm-- like, the questions I have in my mind are like, how do we figure this shit out? Like, someone is- How does someone do that? Yeah. Because, 'cause women are natural scientists, Jason. Right. Is that what it is? Okay. We're very observant- Yeah ... when we wanna be. Yeah. We m- we see patterns. And like- You'd probably feel that one too.

You'd be like, "All of a sudden I don't have fleas." Like, exactly. Yeah. And I want more of this. Yes. I want less fleas in my life. Less fleas. Okay. So say your PhD is developing to be about fleas. Yeah. You just write all those things. Yeah. And then you go, "Actually, what those, that flea stuff, that's fucking useful."

Yeah. "I'm giving that five stars, would recommend." O- on the metadata bit of the, um- Of the note ... of the note is [01:18:00] what- Yeah ... is what Inga's done there. So write to us if you think there's other metadata or they make sense to you. Yeah. You know, there might be an ick factor The ick factor? Yeah. Yeah, ick But, but pretty high.

Might be high. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Surprisingly, this book had a high ick factor. Okay, so all sorts of things can happen here. I did think- Yeah ... I got a third of the way through and all of a sudden I was like, "No, let's close the book." So all this is very useful. All we're saying is to PhD students, if you're gonna keep notes in a bullet journal- Yeah

it helps to have a little bit of metadata. And the good thing about a bullet journal, what I like, is the flexibility of it and the freedom of it. Because you haven't got a pre-populated template like- Yeah ... you have, say, in one of those notes apps or whatever. Um, you can just feel free to add stuff, right?

Mm. And you could add more keys down the end, or you could have like ... You could end up having a whole page, for instance. Yeah. We go, "Oh, that actually was really useful for me to have my meta ca- data- Yeah ... but I can't remember the, each one of them all the time. So I've got [01:19:00] metadata tags here as another collection.

I'm just making this up as I go. Page 21 on- On page 21, metadata tags. And I can have usefulness, date- Ick factor ... usefulness, ick factor, usefulness. Because the next time that you're going to write a note, you might not remember what they all are, and so you need to go back to page 21 to be able to go, "Oh, hang on, I had..."

Maybe you end up with a dozen of these things. Yeah. And you can remember six of them. Yeah. But you're like- And maybe you don't use all of them in every note. In every note. Like, you don't have to. Yeah, yeah. You don't have to be that much of a pedant. And maybe you wanna go to backwardsly add them to other notes.

Yep. You know? So you've got, that's page 21. 21. So on page 21 we've got metadata tags. So the purpose of this is that when you pick up your bullet journal, um, you can flick straight to your index, run your eye down the, the index, and then go, "Oh yeah, [01:20:00] that's right. I know I've got a page in there on, um, metadata tags.

I can't remember where it is." Run down, and it's like, "Oh yeah, it's on page 21." Right. You go straight there. Perfect. You don't have to flick through your book or the other alternative, uh, which, where people collect stuff. Mm. You don't have to search on your, on your computer or fi- dig through- Mm ... pages on your desk or find- Mm

sticky notes and all rest. Mm. Like, it's bloody organized, people. Mm. Now we've got a f- It's bloody organized ... a few other things that just I think would be useful for everyone, including PhD students. Before we do- Yeah ... I just wanna th- I just want- A really- Before we leave this idea- Yes ... um, you've got your bedraggled- Daisy

Daisy- Mm ... on page whatever. Yes This might be your first cut at it- Yeah ... on page, on page 19. Yeah. But after you've done a whole bunch of reading, um, you might decide to draw another bedagle- bedraggled daisy and update the original version- And maybe it's just about fleas ... and it could be that- 'Cause now your project is about fleas.

Right, and then why this is [01:21:00] useful is if somebody ever, in the future, ever asks, "How did you go from small dogs to ridoco... Ridoco?" Rococo. Rococo. Rococo women- With a theory about feminist engineering in Rococo female circles. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. You can go, "Look, on page 19, 54, 78, 129, you can see how my thinking through this bedraggled daisy diagram has evolved."

Which is very important in the context of research projects in my latest book- Yes. ... written with Pat, Amy- Yes ... and Helen. Thanks, Pat, Amy, and Helen. Yes. We talked about how research projects are discovery mode, which means they evolve as they unfold, and they change. So your job as a, as a project manager is not so much to make sure that things are done and meet milestones, but to advocate for the project, to be the memory for the project, to argue about why the project is different now.

Because it used to be about the size of dogs- Yeah ... but now it's about fleas and Rococo ladies' [01:22:00] knitting circles. Yes. Which- Except they didn't knit, because that was lower class. Di- Lower class people knit. Oh. They did embroidery. Oh, okay. That's a whole other topic. Right. That's a PhD for another time. Do you know, I, I, I'm very, very confident that somebody is gonna write to us and go, "You know how you were talking about Rococo women and fleas and, and like...

Did you know..." And they're gonna give us the link to the thesis that's been done about- I should, I should cite my sources for how I know that about fleas. You should. Pers comm, personal communication. Oh, okay. My friend James Thompson- Yes ... is a fundraiser at the National Gallery of Art in the UK. Yes. And there was a exhibition that was all about small dogs.

Yes. And, uh, that was the tour guide- told him that fun fact. Really? Yeah. Oh, so this is thirdhand? It's thirdhand. Purse comms. Purse comms. But I do trust James. Okay. So someone might write to us and say, "You're wrong about the fleas," [01:23:00] I welcome that. Yeah. I open my arms to that because then I'll come back in my bullet journal- Correct the record

and I'll correct the record. Yeah. And I'll go, and I, I attributed that to that, to Yap: The Short History of Small Dogs, which I am gonna buy and read- No ... 'cause it looks great. Um, but it isn't in there to my knowledge. It might be. Okay. I can go and verify. You can. I can report back. Um, is there any other bullet journal tips that...

I would just like to include a couple. Sure. I think it's really, really helpful to have a list of your subscriptions. Oh, yeah. And the- when they're due, the pay. So, you know, so it's like name of the service, um, due date or when you renewed it, amount. January, February, March, April- Yeah ... like May 31. He's showing me the fist theory.

So subscriptions very handy- Yeah ... um, because you can just breed those like rabbits, and then they're costing you so much money. You're a PhD student, you gotta keep your eye on costs. Yep. Yeah? Which is one [01:24:00] that I've got, um, in my bullet journal. Mm. I have a whole, um, page collection of when I spend money for when we are pre-booking flights and hotels for jobs that are gonna turn up in the future.

Yeah. So because what can happen is I, we might not have a job until August, and I've booked the flights way back in May. The money gets taken out of our account in May, and then I have to reconcile that account versus the actual job- Yeah ... and all the other- Yeah ... expenses that turn up when I actually do do the job.

Yeah. And I'm sometimes like, "Ah, Goddammit, where's that thing?" And I just go back to my, I go back to my, uh, collection about when I spent money, and I can go, oh, yeah, that hotel cost X dollars. It was atto- it was attached to this particular job. Yeah. And I can, I can reconcile all those funds. And you can let go of that in your mind- Mm

that information, that kind of detail because you [01:25:00] know you've landed it somewhere, you've collected it somewhere, right? Yeah. The other thing I do is, um, I have a books loaned. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Um, so you might say supervisors do love to hand books to you, so it's a good way to keep, uh, track of what your supervisor's loaned to you.

Yep. So books loaned or equipment loaned or something like that. Yeah. Yeah. Hot tip, after you've done your PhD, people will come... You will collect, you will end up with a collection of books, although the new ones, do they have books anymore? Uh, still, um, depends. Yeah. My students do. Um, I collected a whole range of books on mine, um, around cartography, metaphor, strategy.

Yeah. And my circle of- kind of friends and colleagues knew that I had this big collection of these things, and they would come and they'd say, "Hey, Jason, have you got anything about blah, blah, blah?" I'd go to my book collection shelf, and I would pull off the very expensive academic book about cartography, and I would say, "Yeah, have a look inside this book."

And they would say, "Thanks, Jason," and they would go away. And I didn't do this. Oh. [01:26:00] And little by little- My- ... your collection- ... large collection of expensive cartography books got- Is now smaller ... smaller and smaller. And I can't remember who I lent them to.

Yeah. Mm. And time has passed, and now I'm embarrassed to go back and say, "Hey"- "Hey" And they're embarrassed, 'cause they're like, they don't even remember who they borrowed it from. No. Yeah. So this is a good one. Yeah. That's a, a- Yeah ... concur. Concur. Uh, are there any kind of, like, just regular keeping track of things that you would...

Uh, we talked a little bit about, um, one does service activities- Yeah ... and teaching activities, and it's really useful to hold onto this sort of stuff for in our research career success. We talk about the kind of things that you do, like backstage work. Yeah. So say you, um, helped out at a conference, or you organized a reading group, or you tutored.

Um, you can keep a little service log, and I really recommend this for working academics. Yeah. Um, where you just, like, keep a quick note of all the things you did for other people, even if you [01:27:00] don't think it, like, falls into a category of service. The other thing you can do as well is mentoring. Yeah. Um, so I have lots of coffee chats, right?

I don't actually keep it in my bullet journal, but I have ... I keep a log of all my coffee chats. Oh. And I count them at the end of the year. Oh, do you? Yeah. Oh, that's a good idea. And I record them, and I tell my boss, you know? Yeah. "I mentored this many people." Yeah. She doesn't care. No. Because she's awesome.

She trusts. Yeah. She doesn't need me to give those kind of figures, but later on when I come back to write a promotion application, which thank God I never have to do again. Right. I mean, if I want to become a distinguished professor- Yes ... I, I just couldn't give a fuck. Yeah. I never wanna write another one of those promotion applications- Okay

in my life. Okay. Okay? But if I say I did- Yes ... I would be keeping this kind of, um, information for myself. Yeah. And just because it's in the index, you can just go back to it any time. Easily find it. Last thing we'll talk about is I'm just gonna take away the bullet [01:28:00] journal, and, uh, we talked about this a little bit last week- Last episode for those listening

last episode For those listening It was last week, but it's last episode. This is my master index of all my other bullet journal. Yeah. Um, and as you can see, I've got numbers when I started and finished them. So at the top of the, at the top of the page, Inga's got, so BuJo number two. She started it in July 2021, finished it in December 2021.

And then she's got-- she's transposed the index from BuJo 20-- number two into this page on her master index, um, bullet journal. So she can just go down, and she can look, and she goes, "In that year, what did I look at?" And she can go, "Oh, yes, uh, induction turned up on page 106 and 137." Mm. So she goes, "Oh, okay," goes along to bullet journal number two, pulls it out, opens up to page 106 and [01:29:00] 137, and, like, there's the information that she needs.

Yeah, and that's a whole-- Like, I continue to do induction, and I'm just, as you talked, I'm like, "Oh, that's the first year I did it." Yeah. And I couldn't remember. The other day, someone said, "How long have we been doing induction?" Oh, yeah. And I didn't even think to look in here. Right. But here it was. Past Inga started doing work on that in 2021.

Yeah. So we've been doing it for five years. And you know- I just, I, I just want to point out that- That it's inconsistent ... it is inconsistent- ... that her indexing in her master index is different to the indexing she's got in her- ... her other BuJos. And I'm like, "What is even going on now?" What do they say?

Consistency is the tyranny of small minds, Jason.

Anyway, take that under advisement. I love the fact that you knew exactly what I was gonna do there, you- I know, right ... I'm like, oh, God. He's gonna come at me with this one. All right, I need to be consistent. Then you just put a sticker down the side of each one of them. On the spine. Stick them on the shelf.

Yeah. I also recommend stickers. Yep. I sticker all my-- I'm gonna go and get-- talk amongst yourselves. [01:30:00] Right. 'Cause I'm gonna get a couple of my bullet journals so you can see. So you can see what's going on. 'Cause I think this is a very important part of the process. So Inga has, um, stickers, and I use stencils because my handwriting is terrible.

And I use stencils across the top of the page so that at least the most important thing on the top of the page is clear and legible. And so sometimes that just might be the date. I might, like, stencil in Monday, the 23rd of whatever month. But sometimes it's the title of the collection. Or some other thing that I can just quickly see and I need something clear and legible at the top, I use stencils for that.

I also use, um, you know in the index at the front, like the monthly index- Mm ... the monthly spread that you're talking about? I've got this little, and I might go get my stencil just to show people. Mm. I've got this little stencil that's got this little cutout which is, looks like a plane. Oh, yes. And so what I do is when I know I'm about to fly- Yeah

if I'm flying on August 23rd, [01:31:00] I will just color in the little plane thing- Oh, yeah ... and use that. And it- Oh, that's fun ... and the, and the way in which I angle the plane, so if it's pointing up- Oh, yes, so- ... that's if I'm flying ... going out, and then you're returning- And if it's pointing down, it's like- I like that.

I need to get one of those. Yeah, yeah. They're cool. Um, so I really enjoy putting stickers. I'll go get my book. So this one is the outrage is real, 'cause that really was what I was feeling. Um, and this one, uh, which is my other yellow one, has one of my favorite stickers, which is Canberra thinks you're boring too, because everyone's always dissing Canberra.

This one I got a whole bunch of stickers from, uh, the Faded Mates podcast, which are all very funny romance novel stickers, and they're on the back as well. And so I just make sure that every bullet journal, um, and you notice this one's got, uh, some Canberra stickers as well, Canberra Pride represent. Um, and I, you can see that I started doing that after the second bullet journal.

Mm. Because I realized [01:32:00] Which year? Who knows What? Whatever in this time. Yeah, so like everyone has a theme, and I like just collect the stickers over time. And like, I love stickers, but the thing about stickers is where do you fucking stick them? Yeah. But you've always got a place to stick them. Yep. So that's only a small collection of my bullet journals there.

Uh, when I die, someone's gonna go through it all and write a complete history of me. Oh, really? It's gonna be archival. Yeah, so true it is. Like the person that you stayed at, like in the UK- Yes ... on your sabbatical. Yes, Adam Kendon. Yeah. Yeah. Amazing. Where you went and did that work. Yes, exactly. So somebody has to pay you back.

True. Yeah. Yeah. It's transactional. Oh, mm. Um, this w- this year, I also do the sticker thing. Um, I took the idea from Inga. Uh, this year, the sticker on the front of it is, is shut up and scale up because that's what the business is about. On the back, you can see this is where I've taped that tracking device- Yeah

on the back. Um, and it works really well. The reason it's in bright pink, [01:33:00] uh, tape is 'cause if I put it down on a desk- Mm ... I'm always gonna see it from wherever I am in the room. Oh. And I do that a lot. So we often will bring our bullet journals with us in our workshops, and we'll hand them around so that people can see.

Um, and then I, I just need to know that, oh yes, up in that corner on that back table is actually mine- Yeah ... and I can see it. And I think you can see just from what we've done so far, like how valuable these things become. Like these are your IP, they're your intellectual property. You wanna show people, uh, we could probably do this underneath.

Yeah. I love that. You've got school holidays and public holidays. But these come with a little, um- A little pouch ... a little pouch. And then inside- And inside the pouch ... the pouch I've got like stencils. Yeah. So that my bad handwriting is easy to see, and that's ... this little metal one here. I've also got a little metal ruler in there because- Is that the one I gave you?

Maybe. Yeah. Didn't I buy you something when I was traveling? You've bought me lots of stuff. Yeah, I bought you like stupid stationery for the [01:34:00] bullet journal. Yeah. Is that the one that's got the little, um, plane on it? It's got a little plane in it right there in the middle. Awesome. And so I keep those in the back, and I also keep things like, there's a little photograph of my parents in there because- Aw

well- Bless. You're a good son, aren't you? Um, and like a few other stickers if I wanna give away stickers and that sort of stuff, they're on there as well. What, what's this one here? This one's actually a personal one that I'm not gonna open in front- Yes ... of everyone. But I just wanna shout out to Christy Clark For printing out stickers Not Christie Clark, Mel Caston I thought...

Oh, Mel, Mel did these. Mel did these ones. Yes, Mel did these. Mel- Shout out to Mel Caston Thank you, Mel Second shout out So this one is my super secret, like, like this one's a, I've... Yeah, this one's a, a bullet journal that I keep just for me. Um, and that's why I've got that particular sticker on it. So you know So that I know if I pick this one up, it's got all my secret- all my secrets in it.

I see. I would think it was, like, a work one because- I know. I, like, because of what I'm, I'm doing the obfuscation thing Oh, I see. Okay, nice Pe- people will go, "Oh, I don't wanna read that boring [01:35:00] work shit." Oh, sweet But it's actually got all the juice in it. Great. Love that. I think I've just put that on the internet.

Okay. Maybe we'll cut that bit out. Maybe. Um, okay. So, uh, is this all we're saying? We can probably stop our, um, stand one. Recording of the bullet journals? All right. The only, I guess as we wrap this one up- Mm ... as we wrap this episode up, um, the only thing that I would like to say is that over the years I have tried many different approaches to capturing, collecting information, um, writing journals, having journal journals, like, you know, the ones where you actually talk about all your feelings.

Like, all of that sort of stuff. Mm. Um, I've used lots of different capture methods, Obsidian, digital methods, photographs, you name it, in order to be able to collect information together and keep it in one spot. I've never been able to stick with one consistently all the way through. Mm. The closest [01:36:00] I think I've ever come to a system that I've stuck with is probably OmniFocus.

Yeah. Which is the... And but that's all about tasks, and- Yeah ... it's not about collecting information for retrieval and that sort of stuff. Or being creative. Yeah. Yeah. Um, this is the only one that I think that this one, it's the top of the, top of the list. That works for me. I can consistently, even if I fall off the BuJo wagon for a bit- Mm

I can pick it back up straight away. Mm. I know exactly where I'm, I'm at, and I can just, like, carry on. Yeah. During the troubles earlier this year, like I can see there's a couple of bullet journal pages where I was trying to keep track of aspects of the troubles, and then I'm like, "I actually don't want to write any of this down."

Yeah. Like, this is just making things worse for me. Closed the bullet journal, left it on my desk. It's just got a gap. Yeah. That's all. Yep. Um, I'm not even, you can't even see the gap in the pages, just that I'd picked up again and- Yeah ... picked up the daily log months after the last daily log. Yep. Months.

Yep. And I don't use a daily log every day. Yeah. Because don't always need [01:37:00] to. Some days are so full with something that there's no point. Yep. Um, some days, I don't know, for whatever reason, I just don't. Yeah. You know? But the bullet journal is a very forgiving medium. Yeah. So, like we've shown you a few things here.

Like I realize in doing this, there's probably heaps more to talk about. So you tell us h- what you'd like us to cover. Maybe we do this again, depending on how editing Inga feels about it. Yeah. Future Inga. Sorry, editing Inga. The, um, the last thing that I would say, I was just thinking about things that you keep.

Mm. I don't have a collection for this, but I put this information at the back of my bullet journal Um, and you saw it there, there was, like, all the school holidays. Mm. Um, because I've got school-age kid. Mm. And, uh, so, like, when s- when d- when are the terms, when are holidays coming up, that just kind of helps me to be able to do some planning.

I just know to go to that page. The other one that I have is all of the medication that our family is on. Oh. So not only the medication that [01:38:00] I'm on, but, uh, medication of the other family members, whatever they're taking at whatever particular time. Um, because you never quite know if you're gonna be asked for that information.

Yeah. And chances are when you are asked for that information, it's not gonna be over coffee at some sort of relaxed period of time. You're likely to be in a situation where somebody really needs to know- Yeah ... what medication another person is on that's close to you. Yeah. So to be able to turn to the, on the, 'cause at the back of all of my most recent, uh, probably three bullet journals- Yeah, yeah

I've started doing that. Doing that, yeah. Um, because sometimes I go on and off medications for different reasons. Mm, mm. Um, I can go straight to that and I can go, "Ah, yes, this particular person is taking this particular medication at this particular dosage." Mm. Because they might need to know. You know you can track that in the health app?

Yeah, I know, but I- Did you know you can actually track other people's as well, and you can share between families? No, I didn't know that. Yeah. So Luke will show you [01:39:00] how to do it. Yeah. But, um, so it's very, very handy. Mm. And, like, I, you know, I- I would be worried for privacy reasons to put that in a bullet journal.

But at the same time, I could see why, exactly why you would. Because when you're in a crisis situation- Or like, you're like, "Which button do I press?" Yep. But you, like a physical, tangible thing- Yeah ... is just so much easier for our brains to handle- Yeah ... information in. The other thing that I like about it is, um, for the few times that I've had to use it, and I've had to actually use this- Mm

you pull that out, and you show it to a paramedic- Yeah ... and they know that that's up to date. Yeah. Right? Like- Yeah ... you've spent the time, you've written the stuff out, like you've a- applied care to that. Yeah. When you're doing a digital one, maybe you slip, maybe you forget- Yeah ... you change your medication- Very true, 'cause it disappears from view Yeah.

Object permanence isn't- Object permanence. Yeah. Um- I mean, this is the ADHD thing, right? Like, if you've got ADHD, and you can write by hand, a lot of it looks dying art. Yep. Um, [01:40:00] and we don't get much practice of it past school anymore. Yeah. Like I did because I studied architecture back in the day. Yep. And I've just got a lot of hours under my belt- Yeah

labeling drawings. Yeah. Um, th- th- these, these got concrete anchors, I suppose- Mm ... that like help our brains to just, uh, you know, hold, retain information. Like, it's old but good. Yeah. Yeah. So if you've got ADHD or autism or both, or tendencies as I do, like I, I've got a large amount of tendencies in the autism spectrum.

Mm. Like, um, the, the kind of, uh... It, it helps you with ordering things. Like it's an orderly process, but it allows creativity, right? Yeah. So it doesn't... It sort of scratches that itch of the kind of autistic tendencies to wanna find patterns, to organize, to do things in a particular way, to have rituals.

Yeah. But it doesn't do it in such a way that it sort of constrains you. 'Cause a lot of productivity systems make decisions for you and kind of [01:41:00] impose them on you. Yeah. And I think the bullet journal doesn't really, or at least not in the same way. Yeah. Yeah. So I think as we wrap up, I've got an ask for our, like, On The Rig fan.

Mm, mm. If you were to spin up a bullet journal for your PhD student- Um, what would you include as maybe inserts or as, like we've done in this example- Template ... a template- Spread ... or something that a PhD student might find useful? They might not need to necessarily find it useful on day one, so you might put it on page 253 as like, "Hey, don't forget this is how you code- Yeah

qualitative data." 'Cause we're thinking of manufacturing one. Maybe. Yeah. I don't know. But we, like, we don't hold all the juice that is a bullet journal- Yeah ... um, you know, what, what potentially you could do with it. But if we were to build one- Yeah ... um, the- What would be in it? What would be in it? Mm. And then if- Teaching, for instance, we haven't covered.

Oh, my God. And I don't think we've really- So much ... covered spreads, so maybe we'll do another episode about spreads. Yep. Yep, [01:42:00] 'cause they're templates that you fill in. Yeah. Like, they're structured ways of thinking. Yep. Um, but we should do our readout. Have we got it in front of us? We do, on the laptop, which is somewhere else.
