The Token Female Podcast

Reclaiming Your Time

Jennifer Rice Season 1 Episode 1

Why The Token Female you ask?
Jennifer walks you through the Reclaim 48 principle and what it did for her.
Well, at home, I’m the token female. I'm the only one that is a female, yes. I have two male dogs, three stepsons, and my husband. Then secondarily, I am almost always the only female or a limited number of one at my corporate job. Straight out of the gates out of college, I was out of a company of 2,500 sales reps. There were only 15 females, and most of us were junior reps. Nothing at any sort of executive-level seat, so I take such great pride knowing that I was surrounded by an amazing limited number of females, and we’re developed by great men along the way. The only issue is I really wish I could've looked up and seen a few female executives that I could've learned and been under their wing. I felt very alone most of my career. I had 18 great years in corporate America.

[INTRODUCTION]

[00:00:02] JR: Welcome to The Token Female Podcast with Jennifer Rice. I will be your host on

the journey to development in creating your badass career one step at a time. Along the journey,

we’re going to have some amazing female mentors and role models who have impacted my life

greatly or have dominated their specific industry.

Why The Token Female you ask? Well, at home, I’m the token female. I'm the only one that is a

female, yes. I have two male dogs, three stepsons, and my husband. Then secondarily, I am

almost always the only female or a limited number of one at my corporate job. Straight out of the

gates out of college, I was out of a company of 2,500 sales reps. There was only 15 females,

and most of us were junior reps. Nothing at any sort of executive level seat, so I take such great

pride knowing that I was surrounded by amazing limited number of females, and we’re

developed by great men along the way. The only issue is I really wish I could've looked up and

seen a few female executives that I could've learned and been under their wing. I felt very alone

most of my career. I had 18 great years in corporate America.

Now, I spread my wings and I am flying. I am now my CEO. So let's talk about what we’re going

to accomplish together. We are here to share strategies and action plans and concepts to put to

use every week and quarterly or hopefully yearly for your career. We’re going to match up what

you want from goals, perspectives. Use different exercises, techniques, and ultimately listen to

what really work for the women that we’re going to interview and for myself. I would love to hear

your story as well. So please go to my webpage at www.jenn with two Ns –rice.com and

subscribe to the guidebook, so you can work along with us every week and send me a

message. I would love to hear about you and your story and what industry you’re in because I

have come across so many amazing women in different industries I didn't even know existed,

and they were truly a token female in that industry.

The glorious thing now is that we don't have to be token females anymore. It's time for gender

equality in business and it is. The time is now. There are more females entering into college

than males, also graduating. What that means is a female workforce that's coming out and

ready to go. High achieving ambitious women really excited to start their careers. Or you could

be midway through your career and you just need someone to lean on and help up your game. I

know at different points in my life I would've loved to have a role model I could've called with an

issue, a problem, or created a plan for myself. I felt like I was really just spit baling my career

and many pieces of it. Where if I could've went back in my 20s, created a plan, and had

someone to talk to, that would’ve made me probably definitely CEO of a Fortune 500 company.

But I did accomplish one thing. I was the chief operating officer for a multimillion dollar company,

so I'm pretty proud of that fact without a role model, but it doesn't have to be like that anymore.

My company is matching mentors, specifically female leadership with mentees so that we can

get this plan together and elevate each other as a collective group. We’re going to cheer each

other on, give each other good feedback, honest feedback, and help rise above. We do not

have to be second fiddle anymore in our careers. We can work to have the wheel of life and

balance. We can try to have it all.

Each episode, we’re going to talk about different sacrifices that women made to get where they

are in their careers. Some of these women will be business owners, executives, senior-level

executives, c-suite board members, and senior sales executives in their respective industries.

There is such a lack of female role models out in corporate America. We have now a now heavy

bottom layer of females in the workforce. But when you look up, there is very limited amounts.

Those women who already struggling off balance most of the time really want to keep their time

to themselves, so they don't offer to mentor people. That's why I created my company to create

mentorship programs, and you can be completely open and honest with your mentor.

Secondly, we all know to get a promotion or elevate our career and maybe make a change, we

have to have mentorships. Everywhere we go in corporate America, we talk about development,

development, development, but these companies are not investing in development anymore in

talent. It’s, “Hey, you got trained on the product. Okay, you got a little bit of management

training. Okay, the next thing, the next thing.” They’re not really developing how you create a

career plan. That really is on your ownership.

The token female is someone who owns their career and is a badass. I want you to own it, take

your action plans out of these guidebooks, and create your destiny. There's no one holding us

back other than ourselves. The second we feel that we are limiting ourselves is the moment we

need to know that we have only full potential ahead of us. We are our true worst enemies. So

who’s ready to take this journey with me because I'm super excited to get to know you and hear

all about you? The time in this world for equality is now. I speak specifically to female in

corporate America because that is what I am. I’m a female in corporate America, and so that is

my area of expertise with equality. But I do want to thank all the men that hired me, promoted

me, worked next to me, supported me all through almost my 20 years in corporate America.

But if looking back at it all in my 20s if I would’ve had a plan and a role model, I definitely

would've been further ahead. I came hard charging out of my education, excited to make

money. I had just gotten a pre-medicine degree from a great college and I was ready to make

some money. I was hustling, I was out working my counterparts, I was making a shit ton of

money, and I was 22 years old. I didn't come from much. My father was a truck driver who gave

his all for a large family of four. But my mom stayed at home, so I didn't really have anyone to

look at and see that's what you should do with a career. It was just kind of that's how it's always

been. She was a housewife and did an amazing job at it, but I really wanted to be making my

own money. I didn’t want to depend on anyone else but myself, so I came out

overcompensating, giving all my time to my career.

By the time28 hit, I was already divorced. I sacrificed everything in my personal life, so I could

have a badass career. For me at that moment, being a badass was making a lot of money well

over six figures, having great titles, and getting job opportunities handed to me hand over fist

because I was ambitious and asking for what I wanted. I never was scared to step out of the

shadows and ask for a promotion or a career change. That is one thing that I want all of us to

remember is that being selective with your voice and being heard is up to you. It's time to step

out of the shadows and ask for what you want, but you may not know what you want yet. That’s

why I'm here. I want help guide you to create a destiny and a dream life that you've always

deserved because by the time I was 30, I was actually emotionally empty, divorced, relocating to

a new city for a job opportunity, and I had just fallen in love with a man with three small sons. I

was getting very wobbly. I didn't know anymore. Was my career my number one thing? Was my

family life? I didn’t know how to balance any of it. I wasn't doing very well. I was trying to still

give my all to everything, and the only one it was really hurting was me.
