Turning Over a New Leaf | Rick Canning
Show Notes

Rick Canning grew up in Nova Scotia as a competitive paddler before discovering road running, trail running and eventually ultrarunning where he now loves testing his limits the most. Although a bridge engineer by day, Rick dedicates much of his time to his coaching business, New Leaf Running Company, where he helps beginner and experienced runners embrace the fundamentals of training he wishes he’d known about before struggling through his first 10K, half marathon and marathon. We nerded out on various training philosophies and coaching tips, including the importance of being consistent, slowing down, and why the long run just might NOT be the most important run of the week! You’ll also hear Rick explain why he believes being curious is a key ingredient for success in this sport. And finally, we touch on his recent DNF at the Bromont 100-mile, why he has no regrets about attempting such a lofty goal on less-than-ideal training, and how it’s made him a more empathetic coach. We cover a lot of ground in this episode, but at the same time we barely scratched the surface of all the interesting topics we could have explored. In a future episode we’ll have to dig into all the reasons why we’ve dubbed him “the Canadian Rich Roll,” but until then, please enjoy this jam packed conversation with Rick Canning.
