Cougar medicine encompasses the true meaning of the indomitable spirit. Celebrating personal drive. Cougar energy is also about loyalty, as she is willing to risk her life for those close to her. Like other large cats, she is skilled at being able to travel between the physical world and the spiritual world with sharp intuition and wisdom. Cougar symbolism includes protection, agility, adaptability, secrecy, beauty, and wisdom. The Cougar is native to the American continents with a range that spans from the Yukon Canada area all the way down to Argentina. Cougars are very good mothers, and are skilled at protecting their young. Even Cougar cubs are ferocious fighters. And wildlife biologists caution us that they are nearly impossible to tame. When male Cougars fight for their territory, it is often to the death.

The cougar is a skilled trail runner, hiker and rock climber. They can easily scale steep rock faces, and jump as high as 18 feet and leap a distance of 40 feet. For these reasons, Cougar medicine reminds us to be quick on our feet and be quick to pounce on challenges and opportunities when they arise. When it comes to adaptability, cougars can live in a variety of environments, from arid deserts, to forest to high mountain ranges. While their primary diet is deer or elk, they will also eat smaller prey, like rabbits, mice, and even insects if they need to. Thus, the Cougar Spirit reminds us to be willing to adapt to new things to survive and thrive.

Because of its location across the American continents, the cougar is a popular topic of Native American folklore and symbolism. Eastern tribes such as the Semonal and Shawnee consider the Cougar to be a noble animal with powerful hunting medicine. And the Panther the yellow panther is one of their major clan animals. In South America, cougars were associated with wealth and connecting to the earth. Zubi hunters carried stone carvings of the Cougar for protection and hunting powers. Pueblos had Cougar societies and associated the animal as the directional sign of the North and the color yellow for powerful healing.

The stories of the Cougar are not all positive. However, in some Western tribes, seeing a cougar or hearing its cry was considered an evil omen, and associated with witchcraft. The Cougar is one of several North American animals whose name has Native American roots. Although a little hard to trace exactly…. Cougar is actually a French interpretation of the Brazilian Indian name for cat and on the other hand Puma, another common English name for the same animal comes from Spanish roots.

So whether you call it a cougar, a mountain lion, a Puma, or a yellow Panther, call it in, call it in for strength, energy, agility, adaptability, assertiveness. To help you overcome adversity. Set clear intentions, harness wisdom, and focus on your life's next steps. Call in the Cougar! “Call IT in With Dar!”
