In the Bible and Christianity, the fox is crafty and prowling with qualities of Satan. In ancient Chinese stories, the fox is a shapeshifter, and believed to signal the spirits of the afterlife, sometimes draining human energy. In Japanese myth, the fox is associated with Shinto, the goddess of rice, a wise and magical being. It is also believed to represent a Rain Spirit. According to shamanic beliefs, Fox symbolizes the releasing of the old traditions and replacing them with new beliefs. In African mythology, the fox is the trickster god of the desert who embodies chaos. He is also seen as a messenger of the gods. Kuma Lisa is a female trickster Fox in Bulgarian and Russian folklore. Western European foxes are based on a masculine grammatical term, and Russians on a female grammatical gender. In Scotland and Finland, the fox is depicted as a trickster, but seldom an evil one. In northern Finland, the fox is said to run through the snowy hills, creating the Aurora Borealis. When the foxes fur touches the snow, it creates magical sparks to set the sky ablaze. Still today, the Finnish word for Aurora literally translates to “Fox Fires”. In the Middle Ages and Renaissance foxes were seen as undesirable…. cunning and fraudulent behavior, and sometimes burned as a symbol of the devil. In ancient Peru, they worshiped animals, and often depicted the fox as a cunning warrior in their art. So all over the world, fox has been a literary subject, with attributes of cunning and trickery, playing both positive and negative roles in literature and art. We can call on Fox medicine, when faced with a seemingly insurmountable problem. It's important to be flexible, adapting to the resources that we have readily available... tact, diplomacy, quick thinking and wisdom are called for. When we don't want to get into a fight head on, we can apply the cunning camouflage and innate intelligence of the fox. If Fox is your power animal, you are a complete, keen observer, noticing even the smallest details and perhaps predicting what might happen next. You are nurturing, protective and conscientious with great parenting skills. You are capable of blending in and adapting to a variety of situations.
