They communicate through whistles, clicks, and even ultrasonic sounds for family members exercising their individuality. One can learn from this animal how important it is for you to discover your unique authentic voice and your individuality. They live a vegetarian lifestyle on bulbs, berries, nuts, roots, and grass. Gophers live in woods, prairies, mountains, and even coastal areas. They have small ears, no real neck, short legs and use their broad front claws and teeth for moving soil and expanding their territories. They dig tunnels about 18 inches down and then they dig their separate nesting chambers, a safe six feet deep underground. Because they spend most of their time in the dark their eyesight is poor, but they are able to sense energetic or vibrational changes that warn them of trouble. Kind of a form of psychic Clairsentience… clear feeling. Gophers don't hibernate, but they hoard lots of food for winter planning and preparation, are natural gopher characteristics. In Native American folklore, gophers were considered to be messengers of the underworld by many Western tribes. Sometimes they were also seen as a symbol of death.
