Animal Guidance Series: Mole Medicine
Show Notes Transcript

Do you love a good mystery? If so, the mole might be just the spirit animal that you can relate to. Overall, mole medicine is about getting down to the root of the problem or getting down to the root of the matter. It symbolizes persistence, organization, efficiency, conflict avoidance, energetic vibrations, psychic senses, weather prediction, luck, ancestry, magic, and the element of Earth. Mole spirits speak to your soul, and encourage you to turn inward for wisdom. Moles exist all over the world and on every continent, but for South America and Antarctica. Moles avoid mountainous regions, or any areas where the soil is too acidic. This avoidance of acidic soil is a message for us to avoid conflict, toxic situations, or negative relationships in our lives. They live in mole hills that sometimes serve many generations. The mole hills have several organized tunnels, leading to spaces for sleeping, food storage, and even a birthing chamber. A single mole can occupy over two acres all by itself.

Mole medicine reminds us to remain humble and modest, embracing growth and success. So call in this everyday hero to build a solid foundation in your life. Call in the mole spirit, Call in mole medicine, “Call It in With Dar”

The mole hills have several organized tunnels, leading to spaces for sleeping, food storage, and even a birthing chamber. A single mole can occupy over two acres all by itself. Among the Native American tribes of Northern California, a mole digging near your home precedes severe illness, or even death. But other tribes are more positive and the Pueblos and New Mexico and the Cree tribes have mole clans, considering it to be a medicine animal, overseeing the land's health, agriculture and hunting. The origin of the word mole can be traced back to late Middle English meaning” earth throwe”. The well-known metaphor of “making a mountain out of a molehill" first appeared in about 1557 in the writing of Willian Roper's “Life of Thomas Moore” in the early 1900s. Saints Sylvester's Day on December 31, was a time to pick up mole hills to prevent moles from returning. In the late 1700s, it was believed that holding a mole in your hands until it died, would transfer the moles healing power into your hands. In the 1800s, a powder made from a skin and dried body of a male mole was used to cure the fever associated with malaria. I think it's interesting that up until the 1900s, the dripping blood of a freshly killed mole was used to cure warts. Even into the 20th century, as recently as 1971…people in some parts of the world carried bags of mole hands and feet around their necks as cures for toothaches, rheumatism, epilepsy and other ailments. Today mole medicine is indeed a thing of the past. A famous Roman author named Pliny the Elder wrote about more some 2000 years ago in his book natural Alice Historia, saying that the magic by moles showed that the Magi held them in the highest regard for their supernatural properties. Moles are mammals who live in the womb of Mother Earth, and are connected with healing plants, sacred stones and crystals. They are also known as “witches' companions”, and many spells contain mole body parts. Mole medicine was called the” touch of a healer” in the 18th century. This creature is strongly associated with psychic visions, sensing the future and being in touch with your emotions. Mole medicine can teach us persistence and digging deeper into a situation or more insight. In Chinese folklore, they represent the ability to overcome obstacles. In ancient Greece, moles were linked to Hades, the god of the underworld, and seen as a symbol of death and rebirth. According to legend, the mole was able to tunnel into the earth to dig up hidden treasures and secrets. Chinese culture has stories of insight, intuition and wisdom, as well as the Celtic culture when speaking about moles. Overall, the symbolism of the mole as a spiritual guide reinforces the importance of listening to one's inner voice and intuition. It reminds us that even in the darkest of times, we have the strength and wisdom to find the way forward. The mole’s burrowing abilities represent our own ability to remain grounded and connected to the earth. The mole keen senses tell us to also trust our instincts and embrace our uniqueness. Mole medicine reminds us to remain humble and modest, embracing growth and success. So call in this everyday hero to build a solid foundation in your life.
