What creature flies with transparent wings, reflecting the sun's rays in the various colors of the rainbow? The amazing dragonfly of course, dragonfly wings are made up of 1000s of tiny individual cells, making each wing unique like a fingerprint. With no two dragonflies alike reminding us that it's okay to be ourselves to be the unique you. The dragon flies spend most of its life underwater in the lava stage, and spends only a few months as a beautiful flying insect with these gorgeous wings. So it has very little time to fly. But it can teach us to enjoy every moment and live in the here and now. Dragonflies are creatures born of water, and symbolizes the subconscious mind, thoughts, dreams and desires. Being in the flow. It is a symbol of freedom, transformation, air, wind and water. In Legends and superstitions, it embodies prosperity, power, peace, purity, courage, and harmony. In Greek culture, the dragonfly was believed to have teeth and as part of the Odonata family meaning tooth. In German tradition, it was called the “devil's horse”, or the “witch of the water" in France. “The devil's needle” in Spain, the “devil's horse” in Sweden and “the blind stinger”.

In American folklore, they were called “doctors of the snakes” in a story of a snake that was cut in half, and then was sewn back together again by a dragonfly. Norwegian mythology associates the dragon fly with their goddess of love and fertility Freya… because the heart is formed by their wings when they mate. In a Western superstition, dragon flies guided sailors to the best fishing spots, and if you caught a dragonfly, you would soon marry. In England, killing a dragonfly was considered a sin and a bringer of bad luck. The Swedes believed that the dragon flies were tools of evil spirit that could be used against humans. Italians had a similar belief that the dragon flies were sent from hell to harm human beings. In today's world, the dragon flies symbolize change, transformation, freedom, adaptability, mobility and self-realization, rebirth, happiness, financial gain and insight as well. One rather common interpretation of a dragonfly crossing your path means that a change or transformation is coming into your life and that you are about to experience emotional growth. Many mystic people consider the dragonfly to be a messenger from the spirit guides, their purpose being to reveal a magical path for you to take. Dragonfly medicine prevents people from falling into the trap of deception and is a reminder of happiness, prosperity, positivity, good fortune and courage. The Dragonfly itself is helpful to humans. By controlling the population of mosquitoes and biting flies as well as other insects. A single Dragonfly can eat anywhere between 30 to 100 mosquitoes per day. They have also helped humans by inspiring new technology, like drones. Dragonflies live on every continent in the world except Antarctica. And they are especially common around water. The largest Dragonfly is found in Central America, called the giant donor, measuring five inches in body length and five inches in wingspan. If a dragonfly has fallen into your life, it may be time to look at some old patterns and beliefs to undergo some life changes to become your unique authentic self.
