There are several life lessons that can be learned from the eagle, including: having strong vision, moving forward with speed, and being in the present moment. Rise above daily problems, find opportunities in challenges. Get out of your comfort zone. Fly high. Be courageous, and embrace what life offers including pain. There is an old legend that the eagle alone is the only animal that can look into the sun. St. Augustine said “the Sun invigorates the eyes of the Eagles, but injures our own”. There is also a legend about a prince who gave an eagle salmon and later during a very lean year…the Grateful Eagles brought salmon into His kingdom, followed up by sea lions and whales that they left on the shoreline in gratitude. In ancient Egypt, over 4000 years ago, the ego was revered for its strength, shrewdness, and leadership. When Rome conquered Egypt in 300 BC, they continued to honor the eagle. In 107 BC, the eagle became the official emblem of the Roman army. During medieval times, the eagle was likened to Christ, the divine king, a symbol of an ideal leader. The Eagles keen eyesight was compared to Christ all seeing divine powerful vision. The eagle as an emblem of a perfect leader, spread all over the world, across various religions and communities. When the Founding Fathers gathered at the Continental Congress of 1782 the eagle represented the power of Christ and the military power of Rome. As a national bird, the bald eagle belongs solely to the United States of America. There are some 60 species of eagles across the globe, but the bald eagle exclusively resides in the US and Canada. Bald eagles got their name from the Old English word “balde”, meaning the color white. Juvenile bald eagles do not even have white colored heads until around three years old, so they look like an entirely different bird. Eagles represent loyalty and devotion as monogamous animals who mate for life. The male eagle helps raise their eaglets. Many Eagle pairs returned to the same nest year after year. So over time these nests get larger. In Vermillion, Ohio, there was 20-year-old nest nine feet in diameter and 12 feet tall… researchers estimated that it weighed over two tons. This dedication to maintaining their nests, sticking with one mate and raising their young together is why eagles are symbols of loyalty and devotion. As a symbol of freedom and independence, they illustrate few limitations or restrictions as they soar to 10,000 feet or dive with speeds up to 100 miles per hour. Because of the great soaring heights, the Native Americans believe the eagle was an intermittent intermediary between humans and the great spirit. The eagle reminds us that we are far more than our day-to-day challenges, thoughts and fears. The Eagles ability to soar so gracefully towards the heavens, is why they are a symbol of hope and salvation. Their wingspan can range from six to nearly eight feet wide, to allow the air currents to carry them. That's why it looks so effortless. A human victory pose with arms up and outstretched hands resembles those wings…have you ever thought of that? As a symbol of vision, foresight and psychic awareness. Eagles can see eight times as far as humans can. And they also have the ability to zoom in on very small prey. The term “Eagle Eye” is often used to describe someone who can see something that others would miss. The eagle spirit is a powerful guide to have on your side, to feel connected to a higher power and sense of guidance.
