Mediumship & Spiritual Communication with Ellie Cowan

Mediumship and spirit communication is the exciting topic of today's episode with the very gifted psychic Ellie Cowan. I met Ellie several years ago and have been infatuated with her abilities as an empath, a psychic, her energy work and animal communication abilities. She talks to my dog, Clint, every time they see each other, and gives me new information. Her background includes teaching meditation and sacred movement in India and other places around the world. She is a skilled storyteller, as I'm sure you will quickly find out as we discuss mediumship and spirit communication in today's episode of “Call IT in With Dar!”

welcome in, Ellie. I'm so excited to have you with me today.

Yeah, thank you. I'm super excited to be here. Darla, thanks very much for having me.

Speaker Dar

You are welcome before we dive into our topic of mediumship and spiritual communication. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got to where you're at today?

Speaker Ellie

Yes, and I will try to be condensed with that. So my name is Ellie Cowen Bovid. I grew up in Duluth, Minnesota. I am in the middle of my fifth decade, and let me just say that if I had known when I was a child, how long it would take me to actually get to the reason that I'm here, so to say I don't know that, I would have hung out for it, but I'm here now, and I'm very, very glad. I am a medium, an intuitive, very much an empath. And, you know, it's just taken a long time to understand my gifts so that they've been something that I'm able to offer the world.

I've always been a deeply spiritual person, but I've also always been extremely private. This is nothing that I ever, ever thought that I would be doing publicly, but it is now. It's my work, and I

know that the best years are to come, and so it's really delightful, but it was quite, quite a story to get here.

I know myself to be a medium. And, you know, just thinking back to childhood, of course, I didn't have the words. And in my family of origin, I believe that my gifts come from my grandmother, and I always keep pictures of my ancestors on my tables when I'm out at public gatherings like the ones that we've met at, and I really honor my genetic line, and I know that a lot of the work that I've been doing my whole life with healing myself in order to become a cleaner and a cleaner vessel for spirit has also gone and healed. My ancestry line, my DNA lines from those in the past and those to come.

So I recognize now that I've been a medium my whole life. And like I said, I didn't know it but the way that mediumship really started for me was through my extreme empathy, you know, being able to really feel people. And at the heart of the matter is through my own heart, I could perceive people's to the core of their soul, really and especially. And it really started through sorrow and , through the things in people where they were wounded, I would say so. I was born in 68. I was very young, of course, when the Vietnam war was going on, but I was really aware of it. And I can look back now and understand things that, of course, when I was a child, I couldn't understand, nor did I know that I was different from other people. But if you go onto my website, which is, love your path.net, if you go under the mediumship section, there's a picture by this incredible artist. This drawing. His name is Alex Gray, and that really sort of describes the energetic feeling of what it was like for me. And you're seeing a body laying on a bed, and there's just a multitude of eyes surrounding them, you know, like eyes that you would see out of. And I felt presence around me all the time. But like I said, I didn't know that that was, you know, different than anyone else, of course, and although I don't remember it, I must have given messages and said things and learned very early on that it wasn't okay to talk about that. And I think it was also my own spiritual guides and helpers that were keeping me probably out from being very medicated or labeled with some kind of a, you know, some kind of aPathy, some kind of an illness because of the experiences that I had and the things that I knew. So a lot of my mediumship growing up came through having a knowing of people, you know, things like simple things like driving down the street, and all of a sudden I would look out the window and I would see someone on the street, and I could feel, you know, the heart, of their pain.

So that's something that I've come to recognize over the years. I did a lot of spiritual training Left home two days after I graduated from high school.

Have a background in dance and theater, and I gained an injury

the summer that I came out, when I was apprenticing in a dance company in Minneapolis. And Through that, I've just I've done a lot of traveling around the world. I went to India before I was 20, and studied there, and I just did a lot of inner training. And like I said, I never in my life thought that I would be doing this work. And back in 2019 when I really consciously invited all of my gifts back. I found a recording that I had with a medium back from 2009 when I was living in Norway and listening to the recording. This gentleman, he's in his fifth, 50th year of being a medium. He's from England. His name is Joffrey Hayward, during the course of re-listening to that tape, he said, you know, Ellie, you will be doing this work someday. And you know, it completely went in one ear and out the other, because, like I said, it just wasn't on my radar. And so this is my coming into my fourth year of working publicly with my gifts and I just couldn't be more delighted.

Thank you, and we couldn't be more delighted either. As Ellie mentioned, we met in person last year and then reconnected this year through in person expos. So let's get into defining mediumship. There's all kinds of different definitions out there, but

We'd like to hear about your spiritual communication and the way you view mediumship.

Speaker Ellie

Yeah, that is such a great point, because there really is, and it's something that I really shied away from that title of medium for a number of reasons, you know, and I studied in England, traditional sort of, sort of the traditional mediumship through spiritualism. And that, the way that I learned it, it had very, very strict sort of contours and boundaries around it. And basically, when you give a message, it's evidential, which is really necessary, because you want someone to be able to recognize, obviously you know the person that you're talking about. And so generally it would go something like, I have a male figure here. He's coming through with this, and this, this is the way he spoke, you know, if you're good at getting names, and so that's, that's the evidence, and it flows from there. And just to be, just for the sake of economy and time right now, the way that I've learned that I communicate is I very much channel my messages. And so I really feel like, you know, the pen and the ink that flows through me is opening up the channel of the spiritual world and so, and I've also, and I feel things on my body and sort of directionally. So I've worked and gained a certain amount of lexicon so that, for example, if it's someone on the mother's side, I'll feel it on the right shoulder when I'm looking at my client. And I'll feel if it's someone close to them, they'll be closer up. If it's a bit more distant. So I feel things directionally, the messages, when they pour through me, personally, they pour through the back of my head and come out through me. And that is also that helps me signal when I'm receiving a message, as opposed to reading in someone's own auric field. And that's, you know, the energy that's around us contains a lot of information about us. And I also, I see auras, and I see lights around people, and I can see, you know, patterns that are stuck. I can't see everything, of course, and I don't want to, and I don't, you know, it's not like I'm eavesdropping on people, but sometimes things light up. And certainly, when I'm working with a client and I have their permission, you know, I can see things, but that also helps me know when it's me looking in and it's coming more from myself, and when it's Spirit coming through.

And so regarding mediumship, I really had to open up the borders, because if I stuck to giving my giving, the messages I was giving, in that way that I was taught, it just wasn't working for me, because I had a broader perspective. Because I'm very much heart centered and very empathic, I need that loving connection with the person's soul. I need to bridge that connection so often that I tell my clients as well that the messages can come from their higher self. It can come from our angels, from our guides, from our departed loved ones, but when it comes directly from our departed loved ones, it always does come with evidence. There will be like a quality, the way the person spoke, the kinds of things that they might have said, you know, were they more reticent in life? Were they more, you know, playful kind of that gesture. But the other thing that was hard for me at first is that everybody's growing, and when we leave our bodies, we expand and we expand and we keep growing. So when the messages come all the time, I've come to recognize that, that our the loved ones that are in the spiritual world, between that thin veil, they have also grown and incorporated information that's useful, you know, they there's all sorts of there's all sorts of rooms that exist, you know, or dimensions, you could say for all of us, you know that astral world, which is also the world of telepathy, or where my animal communication and healing comes from, or when we do astral projection, or where we go when we sleep, astral has also to do with the stars and the in playing of that. And you know, there's, there's healing areas, there's areas of education. It really is expansive. I also recognize, even though, because we are limited to our memories of our loved ones in physical form, you know, and even like concepts about heaven, I never, I've never felt that, you know, there's a place, there's a physical place, and people get their bodies restored and they celebrate. But in a sense, it's energetically that way, because we are energy, you know, and when we make that transition, we become pure energy again, and I experience it very much as something akin to consciousness with love and direction. And that consciousness that took a certain soul form in a lifetime, and was Darla in this lifetime, she had her preferences, her experiences, you know, the things that she was able to do, and those are the things of the soul. And with when one goes into mediumship, when I go into mediumship, there's also the elements of the Spirit, and the way that I define that and it's important to have definitions, because it doesn't matter if what you call a soul is different, but I need to know what you're meaning by that, you know, so that, so that I understand what exactly the language is.

The Spirit, to me, is the things that life brings us, or that happen out of fate, you know, like we can't help a hurricane coming in, or different things that are going to befall us, illness, for example, but what we do with it, the ways that our souls grow, the choices that we make, the courage, the love, you know, or the restrictions of fear, all of that play in And that then becomes, especially the things that we've gained become part of our spiritual force.

In a sense, it's our verticality, and the soul is more horizontal than this earth.

So those are some of the things that go farther in spirit communication. And the other thing that I would say about mediumship is it's not that I'm not in control of the endeavor. There's many things, and if ever I had a session with someone and just nothing was coming. You know, I would be absolutely forthright. You know, that's the ethics of it. And, you know, return someone's money, if that were, you know what the exchange was, and whatnot. But it's very much like an old fashioned radio where you're tuning in, and when you have that static, once you get that clear signal. It's golden. You can hear everything perfectly, all of the nuances of everything, but sometimes it takes some dialing in. It certainly does for me, and within that fuzziness, there can be what my teacher has taught me, because Joffrey has been mentoring me privately since i. Got a hold of him after re listening to the tape back in 2019 and he really helped me organize my sensitivities so that they became now a gift, something that I can share with people. And he always says, if, if 80% of what you get is right, then you're spot on. And that's the frightening thing about being a medium. I think it's very terrifying doing mediumship, because what if I get it wrong? I have no idea, you know, I have no idea what I'm saying. And I've learned that we are to give every message that comes because it may mean nothing to me, it may sound so far out there.

And the other thing is, is that some of this stuff is going to be wrong, and to be able to be free with that, but also to educate people to not close the door, because it could be part of that fine tuning. You know, maybe I'm a representation of what an apple is for me. Maybe, usually that means it's a teacher, but maybe this person grew a special kind of Apple, and it's a grandmother of somebody, and that's a loving memory. You know, there's so many nuances about it, and that's the artistry within it.

Thank you for defining those terms. I think that's really important, so that we know, so we have a common baseline right now. I would like you to respect client confidentiality, but I'd like you to share a few stories from your experiences.

Speaker Dar

We want to respect client confidentiality, but would you share a few of the stories with us so we can get a tangible example?

Speaker Ellie

Yeah, absolutely, absolutely. So I have, I have three different stories that I'm thinking of, and this is, there are three different illustrations of the way mediumship can work. Speaker Yes. So this past Saturday, I was at an event, and there were a couple people that came to me for readings where mediumship played a really specific and beautiful role. And one was a mother and a son that came to me, and the mother must have been in her 80s, and the son somewhere in his 50s, and he wanted a general. I work with oracle cards, and I use them in a really unique fashion. They're very beautiful cards with pictures, and as I'm tuning into somebody's energy when they're sitting down with me, I'm shuffling the cards, and whatever card I choose, my eye will fixate to something in it, and it's usually something different every single time, so I don't have a specific meaning for each of my cards. And then from there, the messages start channeling in. And this gentleman had a question about furthering his study, and that's all he said. You know, I don't like a lot of details because I just want to read cleanly. And so the cards were all just really, really positive and beautiful. And then I picked a card from another deck, and it has a side profile of an older gentleman. And there's also the side profile in front of this older gentleman of a swan, and then behind it, it looks like an eagle or a vulture, some kind of an animal with a beak turned down. And then there's a crown on this old man's face, and he has a beard, and I'm looking at the card for just a moment, and then I said, Okay, so I feel a male presence. And his mother, who was older, usually, I don't have people sit together for reading, because I could very easily start to read the other person, and the messages could get mixed up, you know, but she was older. It was the very last reading of the day. It was close to five. I'd spoken to them earlier in the day. I'd known that they'd been there for a while, and I invited his mother to sit a little off to the side, but she was sitting there as well. And the way the card was sitting, this gentleman's face was on. The card was facing the mother, and I knew right away that it was her father in the spiritual world. And I said, I told him that I had a male figure presence that was coming through as well. So it was different than the reading was prior to then. And what I could feel from this card, is that this gentleman was really nudging him toward this education. And I got the impression right away. Then as as soon as I could see, I could see through his eyes that he understood who the person was. And I said, and then I looked at the mother, and I said, I believe that this is your father. Is your father in the spiritual world? And of course, he was, because she was already quite, quite aged herself. And I said, and, and you know that this is so delicate. These things are so delicate. And I said, He's coming in a very humble gesture. And so I had, at this time, a rush of feelings and impressions about this man, and now I have to discern and the artistry, again, is is to bring the message through, and the messages through in an appropriate way, in a kind way, in an honest way, all of that together. And so I knew that this gentleman was really nudging him toward the training that he was going to do. And the idea about the training is he was actually almost at the age to retire. So what would be the point of taking up a master's degree and the expense of all of that and whatnot? But all the cards were giving so much light, and I felt so much excitement for him. And then I, I can't remember the order of this, but I, but I think I asked him what the training was that he was going to do, and he said, drug and alcohol. And then I knew right away what I felt anyway. And I said, I said, your grandfather drank? And he said yes. And, you know, very delicately, and he, and he was an alcoholic, and he said yes, and, you know, then the, you know, the tissue box comes out. And I always encourage people to let their hearts out and to cry, because it's a really, you know, special environment, and to let the heart heal and to let the emotions flow is really important. And I knew that the the this gentleman was also coming with an apology is the best way I can put it, just with so much love towards his daughter, his this man's mother, you know, and really the words that he has been healing and that he had his life review, and in the course of the life review that he had to live through the experience of the he had to live through how the other person experienced his own behavior and that was the humility that he was coming towards her with, and he he had the symbolically, his hat to his heart, and his head was bowed a little bit, and really the words came, you know, that he came with an apology to her, as Well as an abundance, an abundance of love that he couldn't be the father, you know, that she needed and that she deserved. And that was part of the message. And the other part of the message was so much that he was that he was there, also nudging the Son, and I knew that he was one of the son's guides, and he and that part of the son's role in this lifetime was to help that genetic line heal through his work with drug and alcoholism, his work helping other people through it. And that was just, you know, that's like a nutshell of it. And, you know, the mother then could express some things.

You know, how they were never close, and, of course, how could they be, and how he was also the father, you know, who came through in the mediumship, was also a victim of the circumstances in his own life, and, you know, in the way that he grew up and in the circumstances he grew up in, and that he did the best he could, you know, and that we always when we wound others, you know, we are,we're living our own wounds, you know, so, but the love, the love was really, really what came through, and it was very much received, and it was just so profound, you know, and it really, I think I'll leave that as as the example, just for the sake of time. But it really showed me again and again, something that I keep realizing in every reading that I have with people is the economy of the spiritual world. The spiritual world is so efficient. You know, not only was there a message for her, and that's why she sat there, you know, and because my heart was open, I didn't say what I normally say and had her sit somewhere else, you know. But also, then there was that picture of the Swan and talking about that transformation that's available to all of us. It's best if we can do it here in this physical world. But it doesn't stop once we're body free, you know. And even the crown that that this in the picture that the older man is is wearing, and you know that it was a side profile and that his face was toward his mother, these are all the symbols that then the Spiritual World feeds me, that I that I read in the cards, and for someone else, it might have been the light blue of the card, and it might have been that that was about speaking one's truth. And I'll include that card when I send my bio so people can see it. And that's one thing that I really love. I am a teacher, and I

was a teacher in the Waldorf schools in a movement art called the me, which is a spiritual movement art. And I very much love teaching. And I really love showing people how to use their own intuition, and especially with, you know, reading cards and how to expand our own understanding of our multi-dimensional layers. You know, of our multi-dimensional layers of who we are as human beings, because we are very much energy beings. And that is my first, my truest and my foremost experience of being a human being is that we are energetic beings with multiple layers, way extending beyond the physical, three dimensional layer, and that's some of my finest work that is still yet to come.

Thank you for sharing that clear example, and also kind of talking us through where you were coming from and how you're constantly assessing what would be the appropriate, acceptable kind way to present some real, delicate information. I think that's a big part of the art of mediumship, in my opinion. Yeah, 100% agree with you, yes. Yes, wonderful. That's great. Okay, so I'm just shuffling my cards right now and just tuning in. And this is a beautiful deck. I'll include the picture as well. Your beautiful.

All right, so this card, the title of it is air spirit, and the word under it is knowledge, and the number under it is one. So these are the things that my eyes drew to. And it could be anything like I said, but I'll kind of talk you through the process, and I'll also include this card so people can see what it is.  And so the spirit of air, it's about communication, then it's about breathing. It's about letting go everything that holds us back and as this podcast, It's summer now, the end of summer, but Darla, you told me that the podcast will be coming out sometime in December.

Remember. So there's the winter time, and you know, as we have colds, as we're going through, you know what people are calling COVID And all of these things. A lot of what I work with is the lungs and breathing. There's a couple messages with air for us all. And one is that, In breath and out breath is our ability to breathe with life. And then in the case of what we've been speaking about today, with all of the different worlds and all of the different aspects of our life, beyond this physical world as well, and then something that we can do and that we didn't touch on, but that I could talk, you know, quite a bit about different things, but fear versus love. One thing about the lungs is that is where we store our grief and our sorrows. So the importance of letting our emotions out and not holding back, you know. And like I said, with the Kleenex coming out in the readings, there's a method to that madness when the tears come, always allow them, and always allow them with a heart of gratitude that just says, Welcome, welcome, welcome. And that should be for all of our feelings, because our feelings lead us to truth, and there's nothing that we should fear. And every feeling can lead toward a healing. And there's a woman here, and she's riding on this boat, and it's so interesting, because there's a Swan's head that is at the stern of the boat, almost like an ancient Viking ship. And that swan is talking about that transformation, and it's also talking about dedication. Swans are animals that partner for life. You know that often we visit the same bodies of water again and again. They're very faithful. They're very family oriented. So this is talking about the faithfulness that we want to have to our own inner beings, which then is our faithfulness to spirit. And I'm seeing a lot of green around here. And so it's all through love. It's through the powers of the heart and the heart chakra. And there's a sail behind her, and there's pink in there, and the pink always represents healing. And then there's these gold bubbles that are coming up out of her hand as she's looking out into the distance, and those gold bubbles are our connection to the spiritual world. So to know that our loved ones, for example, talking about mediumship, are only ever a thought away, to trust our intuitions, to reach toward our angels, our guides and our helpers, and to know that we have everything we need. We have that boat, and the waters are clear. And in fact, if we look under that boat, where she is, it's actually fog. And what is there in the reflection is this beautiful Misty Forest. And I'm brought back to the number one. The one is about beginning, and knowing that we are always new, even if we're 99 we should always be new in this world and be open to learning, to be open to growth, to be open to being a beginner, because we're always a beginner in something in somewhere in our life, and that's a beautiful thing, and that we have what we need. She's safe in her boat, and the winds are blowing, but they're soft and they're gentle, and even if they were stormy, I know that she could sit down, she could hold on to the sides of the boat, and she would also be okay. And that's the message,

You know, I just want to thank you, Darla, for this opportunity. And I think what's coming through my heart towards everyone out there is to know that you're beautiful, that all of us are beautiful, that we all have our place, and to do your healing work. Don't be afraid of it, and don't be afraid of our mistakes, because our mistakes keep us in the polarity of fear. And it's the polarity of love that keeps us right in our center. That's what keeps us in our present time, and that's where we can activate the most and the best and the truest acts.

Isolation in whatever it is, if it's in speech, if it's in activity, if it's in you know, coming towards the end of our lives, wherever we are, love equals trust and love equals openness and fear equals isolation, and fear equals shutting down, and we are in this world. So, and then it's, love your path.net. So think of a net catching butterflies and then releasing them. That's how I see it.
