Episode 70 - The Mental Health Of An Athlete
On today's episode of Yours Mentally we talk about the mental health of a professional athlete. This episode is in conversation with Jaini Nandu who is a Sports Psychologist.
We begin the episode by asking Jaini what kind of mental health issues do professional athletes commonly face?
We then talk about whether professional athletes open to the idea of therapy and is it a common practice among them to visit a therapist.
We also talk about Olympian Simone Manuel who said she might be experiencing symptoms of overtraining syndrome. What is overtraining syndrome? What kind of symptoms do athletes exhibit?
We then ask her if there are certain sports in which athletes face additional pressure or are all the same?
We then discuss why and how has the pandemic and postponement of the Tokyo 2020 olympics impacted the athletes mental health?
We also ask how can we, as an audience, help our athletes with their mental health?
Lastly, we ask Jaini what can be done for athletes to ensure that there’s less pressure on their mental health?
