Strong on the Inside, Magnetic on the Outside: Midlife Self-Trust

What if the most powerful reinvention move you could make isn’t louder, bigger, or more visible…but quieter?

In this solo episode of Reinvention Rebels, Wendy shares a reflection on self-trust in midlife—and how becoming strong on the inside can make your life magnetic on the outside.

The episode begins with a small moment: Wendy deciding not to do an Instagram Live.

Not because she couldn’t.
But because she chose alignment over obligation.

That choice sparked a reflection on the role self-trust plays in reinvention.

Wendy shares the moment the words “Reinvention Rebels” first appeared to her—long before she knew how to start a podcast—and how trusting that quiet knowing changed the trajectory of her life.

This episode explores the difference between head trust and heart trust, and why meaningful reinventions often begin with a whisper we choose to believe.

Because real magnetism doesn’t come from charisma or hustle.

It comes from coherence—when who you are inside aligns with how you show up in the world.

If you’re rebuilding trust with yourself, this conversation will meet you where you are.

In This Episode Wendy shares:

• Why self-trust is built through repetition, not dramatic moments
• The difference between head decisions and heart decisions
• The intuitive moment that sparked the Reinvention Rebels podcast
• Why magnetism is really about coherence
• How keeping small promises to yourself builds the self-trust muscle

🧠 Questions to Reflect On

If you're rebuilding trust with yourself, consider these questions:

• Where am I still shrinking?
• Where do I already know the answer but keep seeking permission?
• What small promise could I make to myself this week—and actually keep?

Strong on the Inside, Magnetic on the Outside: My Midlife Self-Trust Evolution

I was supposed to do an Instagram Live today.

And I didn’t.

Not because I couldn’t.
 Not because I was overwhelmed.
 But because I chose myself.

And five years ago, I don’t know that I would have made that same decision.

That choice—small as it seems—is exactly what this episode is about.

Self-trust.

The quiet kind.

The kind that changes everything.

Hey everybody, welcome back to the Reinvention Rebels podcast.

I’m really glad you’re here.

I’m Wendy Battles, your Midlife Reinvention Architect, and this is the podcast where we celebrate midlife boldness and the women who bet on themselves at any age.

Today’s episode is a personal one.

Reflective.

And honestly, it’s a little bit of a full-circle moment for me.

We’re talking about what it really means to build self-trust in midlife, and how becoming strong on the inside made me magnetic on the outside.

I love this topic. It’s such a juicy one.

So sit back, relax, take it all in — and at the end I’ve got a special free gift I hope you’ll jump right on.

I want to start by saying something really simple:

I have trusted myself before in my life.

I’ve pivoted careers many times.
I became a health coach in my forties.
I’ve taken a bunch of different risks.

I even bet on myself in my thirties when I decided I wanted to become a voice actor.

So self-trust has shown up in many different ways.

But when I look back, I can see something really clearly.

It’s the day that I heard two tiny words.

Reinvention Rebels.

That moment shifted everything.

I had never started a podcast.

I didn’t know how.

I loved podcasts, but what did I know about creating one?

I didn’t have any proof that I could do it.
And I definitely didn’t have any experience.

But what I did have was something else.

A knowing.

It wasn’t hype.
 It wasn’t adrenaline.
 It wasn’t ego.

It was a calm certainty that came from within.

I heard those words, and I knew they meant something — even though I didn’t know exactly what at the time.

And instead of dismissing that tiny whisper of wisdom that spoke to me…

I believed it.

That moment wasn’t really about starting a podcast.

It was about trusting my intuition at a very different level.

A soul level.

Having a deep knowing that my soul was speaking to me in an incredibly powerful way.

When I became a health coach in my forties, the decision made sense in my head.

It looked aligned.
 It sounded good.
 It checked all the boxes.

Part of it was that I was running away from where I was at — I was unhappy — so yes, it checked the boxes.

But it didn’t light me up in my body.

Reinvention Rebels was completely different.

That wasn’t a head decision.

That was a heart decision.

It was tuning into my heart and trusting what felt real for me.

Head trust says:

“This makes sense.”

Heart trust says:

“This feels right.”

That’s the difference.

And that was the first time I remember leaning so powerfully into heart trust.

Because I’m one of those people who can get very much in my head — trying to logic things out, trying to piece them together and make them work.

But this was something different.

Leaning into what my heart was telling me.

And actually listening.

Here’s what I’ve learned since then.

Self-trust isn’t built in big, dramatic, heart-stopping moments.

Instead, it’s built through repetition.

It’s built every time you:

• keep a promise to yourself
 • show up when it’s inconvenient
 • choose alignment over urgency
 • stop shrinking

I didn’t set out to become magnetic.

I set out to stop shrinking.

And over time, that consistency built something bigger than momentum.

It built coherence.

And magnetism?

That’s not charisma.

It’s coherence.

It’s when who you are on the inside matches how you move in the world.

Game changer, y’all.

That was a huge shift for me.

I was finally aligning the inside and the outside.

And it started with self-trust.

But it didn’t stop with that first whisper.

It was also about the process that unfolded afterward.

Over time I realized that Reinvention Rebels was a podcast.

That realization didn’t come immediately.

But once it did, even though I knew nothing about starting a podcast, I began telling people:

“I have a podcast.
 It’s called Reinvention Rebels.”

And you know what happened?

I told one of my colleagues at work, and he said:

“Oh, that’s so cool. I could edit it for you.”

And that’s when I realized something powerful.

When we begin to trust ourselves, things start to unfold.

That moment felt like confirmation that I was on the right path.

And then a whole series of other things began unfolding in that same natural way.

That’s how I built my self-trust muscle.

Baby steps turned into bigger steps.

And that feeling on the inside began to manifest on the outside — attracting opportunities in a magnetic way.

That’s the power of leaning in and trusting your heart.

Even when you’re unsure.
 Even when you don’t know.
Even when you’re unclear how things will unfold.

Take the gamble.

Bet on yourself.

Tune in.

And see what becomes possible when you become more heart-centered.

For me, this was also about something else.

Not shrinking anymore.

I’ve shrunk many times during the course of my life.

And I’m guessing you probably have too.

But over time, we gain experience.
 We gain wisdom.

We begin trusting ourselves.

We start betting on ourselves.

And we shrink less.

If you’re in a season where you’re rebuilding trust with yourself, here are a few questions I want you to sit with:

Where am I still shrinking?

Where do I already know the answer — but keep asking for permission?

What small promise could I make to myself this week and actually keep?

Because that’s how this muscle builds.

Quietly.

Over time.

We lean in a little.

We get confirmation.

We trust ourselves more.

And it grows from there.

So I invite you to noodle on those questions as you think about how you might shrink less, expand more, and tune into that inner knowing that exists in all of us.

If this episode resonates with you — if you’re in that in-between space where you’re not shrinking anymore but you’re not fully trusting yourself yet — I created something to support you.

It’s a free guide designed to help you get strong on the inside so you can move through your reinvention with clarity and confidence.

Because this work is really about going within — so we can manifest what we want on the outside in a way that feels magnetic.

And that work always starts within.

Before we close, I want to spotlight a podcast I’m really excited about this month.

It’s called Fit Strong Women Over 50, hosted by my friends Jill McCauslin and Chris Brown for the Being Ellie community.

Have you ever thought about what it means to feel strong, capable, and confident in your body over fifty?

To feel like you can do anything?

Their podcast helps women tap into exactly that.

They interview experts and share insights about losing weight, keeping it off, building strength, and feeling powerful in your body — especially for women over fifty.

And who doesn’t want that?

If you’re enjoying our conversations about strength, vitality, and sustainable health in midlife, I think you’ll really love their show.

You can find the link in the show notes.

And my free gift ties right into that theme too.

It’s called Overcoming the Midlife Belly Blues, and it’s the perfect complement to their podcast.

And if this episode spoke to you — on a soul level or a practical level — I invite you to share it.

Just hit the share button in your podcast player and send it to one or two women who would benefit from hearing this reminder about self-trust and what’s possible.

Because sometimes that’s how the ripple begins.

As we wrap up this episode, here’s what I know now.

Self-trust isn’t loud.

It doesn’t require applause.

It’s built in quiet decisions.

In keeping promises to yourself.

In choosing yourself — even when no one else sees it.

Because what matters most is what you feel inside.

And the stronger you become on the inside…

The more magnetic your life becomes on the outside.

Until next time, Rebels —

Keep betting on yourself.

The world needs you and everything you have to offer.

And remember:

Your reinvention has no expiration date.
