Midlife Reinvention at 61: Letting Go of People-Pleasing and Choosing Yourself
Reinvention Rebels Podcast with Wendy Battles
Opening
Have you ever said yes to something… and the moment the words left your mouth, you knew you didn’t mean it?
Maybe it was a favor, another commitment, something you really didn’t have the time or energy for.
But you said yes anyway.
And later, you felt that little knot in your stomach. That quiet voice that says:
Why did I just do that again?
If that sounds familiar, you’re definitely not alone.
You might be dealing with something a lot of us were trained to do:
People-pleasing.

If you need to kick your fears to the curb, do it scared, and step into who you are meant to be in midlife and beyond, these amazing women—these Reinvention Rebels—can help light your reinvention path.
Come join us and let’s get inspired together.
Hey everyone!
Welcome to Reinvention Rebels, the podcast where we explore what it really means to reinvent yourself in midlife and beyond in bold and authentic ways.
I’m your host, Wendy, and I’m so glad you’re here.
Today, we’re talking about something that I think so many women struggle with—myself included—even if we don’t always call it by name:
People-pleasing.
Team People-Pleasing
I’ll be honest. I’ve been all in on Team People-Pleasing for most of my life.
It felt comfortable.
It was familiar.
It was what I knew.
And honestly, growing up, I was rewarded for it.
“She’s such a nice young lady,” people would say.
But looking back now, I think a lot of that really meant I was quiet, agreeable, and didn’t rock the boat.
And for a long time, that worked.
But somewhere along the way, I realized something important:
People-pleasing might keep the peace on the surface, but it can slowly cost you your voice and your peace of mind.
The Midlife Wake-Up Call
The interesting thing is, those habits didn’t just disappear when I got older.
I carried them right into adulthood.
You know, it’s that comfortable glove I know.
For a long time, I kept doing the same things that had worked for me when I was younger:
being agreeable, keeping the peace, not rocking the boat.
But somewhere along the way—especially in midlife—I started noticing the cost.
And y’all… there is a cost.
The cost of accommodating.
The cost of appeasing.
The cost of always trying to smooth things over.
Sometimes even pretending things were okay when they really weren’t.
And when you do that long enough, you start disappearing a little bit—or even a lot—in your own life.
Nope.
That’s not what I want to do.
And that’s not being a Reinvention Rebel.
A Reinvention Rebel is someone who steps forward, speaks up, and makes bolder choices about what she needs and wants.
Learning to Speak My Truth
And I’ll be honest—I am still practicing this.
I’m still getting better at this.
I’m honing my skills at speaking my truth.
It’s not always easy.
So if you feel like, “Yeah, I know what you mean,” I am right there with you.
And it’s never too late to start flexing this muscle.
I’m 61 now, and I’m still learning how to speak my truth more openly, more courageously.
And you know what?
It takes practice.
The Hard Truth About Reinvention
And y’all, here is something I have had to come to terms with:
When you start stepping out of people-pleasing—the thing that many of us have done for so many years and that literally feels like second nature—some people will not like it.
Someone might be disappointed.
Someone might even be upset.
And sometimes those are people we love.
But that doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong.
It simply means you’re no longer organizing your life around keeping everyone else comfortable at your own expense.
Because reinvention almost always requires disappointing someone.
It’s just that way.
You are shedding who you’ve been and stepping into who you want to be.
That’s going to make somebody uncomfortable.
They’re used to you being the way you’ve always been—for years and years.
So this can be really, really hard for lifelong people-pleasers.
I know it has been for me.
Has it been the same way for you too?
Choosing Yourself Isn’t Selfish
But what I’m learning in this season of my life at 61 is something really important:
Choosing yourself isn’t selfish, despite what people may tell you. It’s honest.
And one of the biggest ways women start betting on themselves in midlife is learning to stop managing everyone else’s expectations and start tuning into their own.
Not selfish. Honest.
Having that conversation with ourselves. Speaking our truth.
And getting comfortable with the uncomfortable of navigating toward this new reality we want to create.
You’re Not Broken
If you’re listening to this and thinking:
Wow… this sounds a lot like me.
I want you to know something.
You’re not broken, Amazing Rebel.
You are waking up.
You are waking up to your magnificent, beautiful life in new ways that center you and what you need and want.
F the people-pleasing.
This is all about creating the life we want to lead.
And sometimes waking up is the very first step toward reinvention.
Final Thoughts
Every time you choose honesty over people-pleasing…
Every time you pause before saying yes…
Every time you listen to that quiet voice inside that says:
This matters to me.
You take one more step toward the life that’s actually yours.
And if choosing yourself feels uncomfortable or even a little scary, you’re not alone.
I’m right there with you, and I understand.
I’ve been there. I’m still there. And I’m still figuring it out.
That’s why I created a short guide that I think you’re really going to like called Do It Scared, Do It Anyway.
It’s designed to help you take those first baby brave steps toward the life you really want.
You can find the link in the show notes.
I hope you’ll download it.
Let’s go on this journey together.
We are figuring it out.
The truth is this:
Reinvention doesn’t always start with a big dramatic change.
Sometimes it begins the moment you stop abandoning yourself just to keep the peace.
