161. Inclusive Communication - Talk the Talk, Walk the Walk
This final episode in our 4-part series about taking a genuine approach to D&I is all about not just talking the talk but walking the walk in everyday practice.
Whether its 'calling out' inappropriate behaviour in a group setting (heart's pounding - do I say something or let it slide?) or a 'calling in' conversation that helps a well-meaning colleague to realise that their comment may have upset someone - these are the moments that make inclusion a reality or not. It could be a conversation that you are actively part of, or a chance interaction you happened to overhear - as the saying goes 'the standard you walk past is the standard you accept' and keeping quiet about things that you know is not right, it doesn't feel good nor help work culture improve.
It takes confidence, courage and integrity to challenge something - we look at practical tips for how to handle these conversations. These are life's un-scriptable moments, but there are frameworks and phrases that can help speak up and out against exclusionary behaviours . We also share tips for more inclusive everyday language and how to balance this so it enables working with others well, not blocks.
