60. Summon Up Assertiveness
In our 60th episode, we discuss a skill more priceless than diamonds in terms of work enjoyment and success: assertiveness. To have the confidence to assert ourselves in both physical and virtual spaces with equal ease is a personal future-fit skill and key to creating a dynamic, successful and inclusive workplace. Being assertive is when we clearly explain or ask for what we want, in a straightforward manner and without drama or moodiness. It is about stating our position clearly without directly or indirectly demeaning the other person.
Working in such new and different ways requires a shift in how we assert ourselves and communicate with others. We share tips for interruption etiquette, handling over-talkers and speaking up before the moment passes. It is positive and responsible behaviour: assertiveness gets things done, clears up misunderstandings and clarifies confusion over boundaries. Own your space!
