Welcome And Summer Reset Setup
SPEAKER_00Welcome to the Secret Summer Coach Podcast. Reset, relax, and unwind with the summer series.
SPEAKER_04Debs.
SPEAKER_02Law back again.
SPEAKER_04Back again.
SPEAKER_02How have you been?
SPEAKER_04Really chilled.
SPEAKER_02Oh, lovely.
SPEAKER_04I've uh I've used my passport, the five top tips that you shared with us in the first part in this four-part mini-series looking at summer relax and unwind series. Many of us use our holidays as almost like that refuge point, looking forward to it. And what we've been looking at is wouldn't it be a shame if we had that time in our diaries as a holiday or leisure, whatever format that is, but actually, we're sitting there so stressed that actually it would have been better to have been in work. So you've given us the passport for shifting into holiday mindset, yeah, and from one world into another. We had Mel taking us through her incredibly powerful tools to be able to relax our mind, almost putting that sun hat on so we don't get a burnt head through overthinking and over worrying and all that frazzled. Then we heard from Carl who took us through, well, actually, rather than clenching and sort of bracing, being able to just relax and embrace that opportunity to just mix things up a little bit.
Why Holidays Get Ruined By Dread
SPEAKER_04So there I am, right, Debs. I'm on the lounger.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I'm going, oh, isn't it amazing? We've got all this time and I haven't got a deadline, I haven't set an alarm, and then suddenly you go, Oh god, I've got to go back to work tomorrow.
SPEAKER_02That is the worst feeling, actually, unless you absolutely love what you do. There is always that element of going, here we go again, right?
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah. I mean, Debs, you know, I love what I do. I mean, you're self-employed, you know, you you know it's all of your own making. But when even when you love what you do and you feel empowered, when you're going T minus four hours, yes, T minus three, can't wait to put your out of office on. Yeah, yeah. So um, what we're gonna be hearing from the incredible Lindsay is we're gonna be hearing from Lins what are five top tips to be able to reframe your workload. So putting those sunglasses on, putting a rose-tinted, amber-lit perspective on workload. Because if we've relaxed so much and unwound so much, we've got into holiday mode, and then it feels like this big dread mountain that waits for us, then um, that's not the purpose of that holiday mode, is to give you a break and a refresh so you reset. So I can't wait to hear Lindsay's top five top tips. Yes. The reframing workload.
SPEAKER_02Love that. Let's listen.
Tip 1 Build A Ta Da List
SPEAKER_01Hey, top tip number one. Uh, I think always celebrate the small wins, and jokingly, we call this do you have you created a tadalist? So often we get caught up with going, I've got this to do, I've got this to do, and that to do. And then we go, we get to the end of the day and go, Oh, I've not done that, not done that, oh, I haven't got round to that. It's okay to do that to recognise what's not been done as long as you acknowledge the moment you have done something. So being able to get to the end of the day and going, Ta-da, done that, I'm amazing. Well done me. Oh, and I've done that, great. And we do all the mini celebrations before we go on to okay, and what's left to do.
Tip 2 Swap Have To For Choose
SPEAKER_01Top tip number two. This is when we get into a place of like a victim mentality. Oh, I've got this to do, I've got that to do, oh, I've got to do this, and that mindset is really disabling and drains your energy. Really being able to keep it in adult, which is around choice, which is okay, uh, I'm choosing to do this one first, and I'm choosing to do that one. What I'm gonna choose to do later is this, and oh, look at that. I get to finish this and I get to finish that, rather than I've got to finish this and I've got to finish that, which keeps us in a nice balance.
Tip 3 Name The Inner Drivers
SPEAKER_01This is where sometimes our drivers are playing out. When we um our workload often increases because we our drivers, our script drivers start to be in charge. And I've spoken about these many times before. We've got be perfect, please others, try hard, hurry up, and be strong. Quite often, if our be perfect is kicking in really hard, we have the temptation to make things more complicated than they need to be. So being able to say, if this might be perfect, am I am I putting too much into this? Would would would it be okay on this occasion to be really, really good and let go of being perfect? Is this your please others kicking in? Or have you taken on far more than you needed to do because you're saying yes when you really mean no? Is your tripod kicking in where if I feel like I'm making loads of effort, um, often the effort becomes more important than the outcome. Being able to say it's okay, we can leave this for another day is really key. Is your hurry up the one that's driving the urgency? Often that sense of urgency is coming from within, it's an internal process rather than someone standing over you saying, hurry up. So it's alright. I I don't have to speed up on this one. And is this your be strong driver? Are you are you refusing to delegate or ask for help simply because your be strong is kicking in full full pelt? You know, quite often when our drivers um once we can name it, once we can acknowledge the driver, it will often reduce the power it has over us.
Tip 4 Separate Facts From Stories
SPEAKER_01Another top tip is quite often the story we're creating ourselves, which often comes from our child. If we're telling ourselves, oh, if I don't finish this, people are going to be thinking that I'm just not efficient, or I've got 12 things today and I'm never going to get these 12 things done. Being able to check in with yourself and say, hang on a minute, hang on a minute. What do I actually know for certain and what am I imagining? Quite often, once we're able to say, actually, what's the fact that I've got I've got 12, I've got 12 tasks that are due this week, this might be fact. The story is I'm never going to be able to get those 12 things done, you know, or people will think I'm failing if I don't get this done. Some of that's our own internal dialogue that's frightened of failure and telling us catastrophizing. So being able to say, okay, what do I know for certain and what am I imagining enables us to deal with what is actually on our plate.
Tip 5 Use Self Compassion At Work
SPEAKER_01I think sometimes this is being a little bit nurturing and a bit compassionate with ourselves around our workload. Sometimes our internal driver of success, which is coming from our internal critical parent, is saying, Come on, get this done, hurry up, come on, you can do this. Come on, don't have a break. You've got this, you can't let people down. And all that internal diagnose that's going on, being able to access and nurturing, which is around what would I say to somebody else if you were working alongside somebody who you could see was looking as though they had a lot of workload, they've got higher levels of things that are being required. You know, there's that external pressure. We say these are the deadlines, this is what needs to be done. But some of the internal pressure is coming from our own voice and our own head, which we talked about in other top tips, that's making the workload feel bigger and more difficult to achieve. So being able to find some compassion that says, you know what, Lindsay, you're doing the best you can with what you've got okay. You know, it's all right if that gets tipped over to tomorrow. The world doesn't end. You're, you know, you're doing a great job. So finding some kindness, finding some compassion, and giving yourself recognition for what you've done really well today enables us to do uh a go-again tomorrow rather than just have a really rough old day. Told ourselves we've not done a great job and then feel really rough tomorrow because I didn't finish it yesterday.
Debrief Carry Holiday Mode Home
SPEAKER_02How was that for you?
SPEAKER_04Oh, so useful. And as always, being ready to go back. Your born ready days.
SPEAKER_02Born ready.
SPEAKER_04Born ready, born ready, and I'm gonna visualize that I've still got my passport in my handbag, my sunglasses, and my um sandals. And my hat and sandals, and then my sun hat to then be able to feel actually I'm carrying the holiday inside me. Love all I love is that external is what is outside.
SPEAKER_02Well, what the weather's doing as well. If it's snowing outside and it's the dark days of winter, we can still carry that around with us, right?
SPEAKER_04Absolutely, Deb.
SPEAKER_02I like that, yeah.
SPEAKER_04So uh my share the secret would be if you've got a friend or a colleague that says, I love holidays, the uh the only bad thing is at some point you've got to return. Yeah, then um, get them to listen to this because if actually the final week or the final few days of any holiday always spoil worrying about what's waiting for you when you return, then that's 20-30% of that hard-won time that is being tainted. So get them to listen to this. Five top tips reframing your workload and seeing it at a bit of a higher level.
One Change To Keep Freedom
SPEAKER_04Um, Devs, what would your call to action be?
SPEAKER_02Well, my call to action on this one, because you're right, it is such an important topic. It's like, well, first of all, what am I actually worrying about? Because I know my job, so when I go back, it'll still be there. Um, but actually, don't just pick off what pick up where you left off. I would actually go back with that mindset of saying, okay, well, what do I want to do differently so that I can continue to have that sense of freedom or that sense of holiday frame, relaxed mind, whatever it might be. Um, and just hold on to that one small change you're gonna make when you go back into work. So, what would you do differently?
SPEAKER_04Absolutely love that. I love that. Oh, devs. I I do I do really enjoy the summer series that we have. Yeah, I do, yeah. And uh, you know, for those of you who listen to episode 300, 300 now in that in that decade, in that you know, year, century, we're in that yeah century, I know that's crazy, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02Wow, wow.
SPEAKER_04Thank god we don't do a maths podcast anyway.
SPEAKER_02Um I think somebody might catch us out if we did that at all.
SPEAKER_04Um, and um yeah, it's just been incredible, and we always love in summer just to mix things up a little bit and to be able to just you know take a different different approach. So this has been our four-part focus looking at getting into relax and unwind, suitable for any time of year, yes, particularly when you've got a change in the season, how to be able to look after that precious time because you only get a certain number of summer holidays,
How Many Summers Do You Get
SPEAKER_04Debs. Is that right? That's right, yes.
SPEAKER_02What is it? You get 80, potentially 80 summer holidays, normally in a lifetime or something like that.
SPEAKER_04I had someone say to me once that you get 50 summer holidays where you can do wealth to choose what you're gonna do with it, and the health to choose with what you're gonna do with it.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I love that. Oh, so me going for 80 is probably like okay, overkill.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but devs you are bionic women, so um. Oh no 80. You're like one of those Alsatians with the wheels for hips.
SPEAKER_02I'll tell you what, I think oh no, I don't want to have that many now. I'm thinking about it. Oh, I'm not that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so hence our next four-part focus we're gonna be looking at is thriving through
Next Series Thriving Through Change
SPEAKER_04life's changes. Yes. What did it mean to be able to start out, starting out whether uh, you know, whatever your age is, having a growth mindset, becoming a young manager. So, what's that like when you're maybe managing people that are older than you at a different life stage? Yeah, we're gonna be looking at the juggle is real, balancing elder care commitments alongside that day to day, which I know is a topic particularly close to your heart, Deb. So I'm looking forward to that one. Yeah, and then the final one is gonna be looking at recovering after redundancy because sometimes doors do close, they do, but we all know at some point a window will open, and so we're gonna be looking at one of those kind of life changes. So I'm super looking forward to that, Deb.
SPEAKER_02Me too.
SPEAKER_04A really powerful four-part focus, those realities of what you never know what yourself or colleagues are going through, and it's gonna be a good one.
SPEAKER_02And I've yeah, I've really enjoyed this relax, and as you said, this can be done at any point, it doesn't have to just be done now. But as you say, we like to mix up our summer sessions, um, yeah, and and put on our as you say, get our passport, put on our sun hats, sunglasses, sandals, go. I love that.
SPEAKER_04Absolutely, you have a good one. Oh, you too. It's been an absolute honour. Um, co-record recording again with you on this, and uh yeah, here we go. See you with Coach Airlines.
SPEAKER_02Woohoo! Doors to closing or whatever they say.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, what could possibly go wrong?
SPEAKER_02Exactly.
SPEAKER_04Just keep practicing Mel's relaxation, Tips. It'll be fine.
SPEAKER_02It'll be fine, it'd be fine. Yes, trust me, I'm a pilot.
SPEAKER_04Uh love it, love you lads.
SPEAKER_02Bye.
SPEAKER_03Bye.
