Episode 114 - The Remus Babe Ruth Reserve
The worlds of baseball and bourbon collide as Mike and Tony taste the limited-edition Remus Babe Ruth Reserve, a premium offering that blends America's pastime with craft distilling. This special release captures both the spirit of the Great Bambino and MGP's renowned high-rye expertise in a bottle that baseball fans and whiskey enthusiasts alike will appreciate.
What happens when one of baseball's greatest legends partners with a respected bourbon producer? The result is a meticulously crafted 111-proof bourbon that blends three different high-rye mash bills from 2016, 2017, and 2018. Each of the 10,624 bottles (one for each of Babe Ruth's career plate appearances) features a QR code revealing what happened during Ruth's corresponding at-bat—a level of attention to detail that elevates this beyond typical celebrity spirits.
The tasting reveals characteristic MGP nutty notes complemented by cinnamon, spice, and subtle fruit undertones. Despite initial skepticism about the $150 price point, they are pleasantly surprised by the quality. The conversation expands into broader trends in the bourbon industry, where countless new bottles and celebrity collaborations leave consumers wondering which releases prioritize quality over marketing.
Throughout the episode, Mike and Tony delve into the details that make this release special—from the baseball bat-shaped cork to the diamond-themed packaging—while honestly discussing whether the premium price over standard Remus offerings is justified by the collectible nature or the liquid inside. For baseball historians, Yankees fans, or anyone interested in the intersection of American cultural icons and craft spirits, this episode offers valuable insights into a unique bourbon experience.
Curious about how celebrity collaborations are changing the whiskey landscape? Want to know if limited editions like this are worth the investment? Listen now and discover whether the Remus Babe Ruth Reserve hits a home run or strikes out.
I'm coming in real quick on this. Wow, listeners, rewind back. Start from the beginning, the first lyrics.
Speaker 1:You wanna do it? Oh, we're gonna do it. You do it. Yeah, listen to what he just did to me Screaming when we fucked.
Speaker 2:So he opens with oh, we're gonna do it, you do it. Yeah, listen to what he just did to me Screaming when we fuck. So he opens with screaming when we fuck. So I turn that song on in the car with my daughters. I was like, hey, great new song. And they're like yeah, right, dad. And I'm like what, thinking like it just wasn't cool enough.
Speaker 1:They're like listen to the first sentence and I'm like oops, shit, mike, you don't get to pick songs anymore. Two teenage daughters. I'm going to have to put the explicit dot on this now.
Speaker 2:Who is that Machine Gun Kelly? Machine Gun Kelly. What's our little background on Machine Gun Kelly? Dated who?
Speaker 1:Megan Fox, transformers, megan Fox, remember the girl from Transformers.
Speaker 2:Well, alright, anyway, that's Machine Gun Kelly guys. I mean actually the song's really solid.
Speaker 1:I don't know why you need to start like that, but whatever, he doesn't want it to be on the radio.
Speaker 2:I guess this is Revolver Tony and Handgun Mike listening to some Machine Gun Kelly.
Speaker 1:Actually the song's really catchy. I actually don't mind it.
Speaker 2:I know it is and that's why I like it. You, dick, hi, Tuggy, berman brothers, mike and Tony it's whiskey time. It's whiskey time. Here we go. All right, man. Okay, guys, listen to the podcast. Right before this, you know what we talked about. I said we're going to really just really dive into the future of future podcasts with high-end, really delicious, great whiskey. I feel like Tony's throwing us a novelty bottle here. It is a of future podcasts with high-end, really delicious, great whiskey. I feel like Tony's throwing us a novelty bottle here. It is a little bit.
Speaker 1:It's not cheap. No, it's not the price is there.
Speaker 2:It wasn't crazy, though. It's MGP Midwest Grain Products and they make their Remus brand. They make the Remus Repeal. I've liked almost all of the Remus brands. This is the remus, babe ruth, the great bambino reserve. Remus, babe, ruth reserve. Yeah, so babe ruth is tied into whiskey now. You did tell me he was a he was a big.
Speaker 1:He was a big. He was a big drinker, he was a boozer.
Speaker 2:I didn't put him on whiskey. I thought he was just slugging back cases of beer. He might have been doing that too, but he was a boozer, he was a boozer, all right.
Speaker 2:Well, I said a little bit about it. It is 111 proof. It is what they call a medley of three mash bills, which is eight, seven and six. You like how I did that backwards? Yeah, six, seven and uh. Different aged mash bills, different high rye mash bills. Don't forget, mgp is out of lawrenceburg, indiana. That's in the very, very, very southeast corner across the river and you're right into right next to kentucky man, right there, by cincinnati area, right into the natty yeah, um, all right this is your tri- state, tri-state area, tri-state area.
Speaker 2:So it's almost kentucky juice. But who cares? If it's good, it's good, and I kind of have a feeling maybe they put something behind this. I like the proof, I like that it's seven, six, seven and eight years old 2016 2017 2018, it's all it's all high rye, which I know.
Speaker 1:know you like high rye better than I do, but we've had a lot of good high rye stuff, a lot of Four Roses high rye.
Speaker 2:So there is so so so much to talk about with this. I'll give the first thing. They call it the Bambino meets the bootlegger Okay, bootlegger being, uh remus. And they partner with babe ruth or his estate, yes put this together and the first little little nugget limited supply of 10 624 bottles. One for each of babe ruth's plate appearances.
Speaker 1:Whoa, whoa this is getting to be like getting a little novelty-ish, a lot of dorky baseball stuff coming out here, all right so you want me to keep going or you want to take the reins here?
Speaker 1:Our bottle is number 3,335. So on the back of each one of these bottles there's a little QR code and you can click the QR code and it'll tell you if your plate appearance, what he did that day. So our his. So babe ruth's 3 335th plate appearance happened on june 4th 1923 and I don't know he had four at bats that day. We don't know the order of the at bats, we just know he went three for four that day. Not a bad day, not a bad day at all.
Speaker 2:So our bottle's from a good day we don't know which specific at bat Correct. Here's what I'm going to say.
Speaker 1:He was playing for the Yankees. He was playing for the Yankees at the time. This was after he was traded From the Red Sox.
Speaker 2:Yes, okay, guys, whiskey has been popular for a long time. It's been extra, extra popular, call it for like the last 10 to 15 years, correct? I'm getting the feeling in the whiskey world that and I not just getting the feeling, but I know it's fact is that some people are a little bored with you know, your standard whiskeys, your standard mash pills. So we're getting blends, we're getting different barrels, different proofs, different like really going out there trying to wow the consumer. Is this a little too far? Have we stretched too far? That we're partnering with Babe Ruth's estate? It's just what I'm going to say. I'm not. Don't stop. If you think I'm a hater, I'm not hating on it. I love baseball, I love the history of baseball, I love that timeframe and Babe Ruth and I love whiskey. So you put two great things together. I'll I'll stop there. Tony, you can keep going with all the details of the Bambino.
Speaker 1:I wasn't really ready to go this way, but in my opinion bourbon is at a weird crossroads right now. There's been it was been so high and so popular for the last 10 years, specifically during the COVID years, that there's a whole lot of new bourbons that have been popping up. If you go to any of your local liquor stores, the shelves are absolutely packed with bourbons You've either heard of or you haven't heard of real quick, for example, packed with bourbons you've either heard of or you haven't heard of.
Speaker 2:Real quick, for example, here's a Penelope bottle Straight bourbon whiskey finished in maple syrup and rum barrels, and also a double cask finish, and they call it the Havana. What the hell is that all about? Just one example, and this is just the first bottle that's sitting next to me.
Speaker 1:I want to try that one. I just got that one Okay.
Speaker 2:Sorry, tony's beats my purpose.
Speaker 1:That defeats the purpose. No, but I do. I do think that there's gonna you're gonna see a lot of uh. I think you're gonna see uh, a lot of contraction in a number of companies. I think there's going to be so many bourbons out at certain different price points, the if the shoppers just the amount of shoppers might not be there to keep trying out. I mean, we've had just think of the last few years, the ones I can think of that are sitting right behind me on the shelf. I think we've got the Terry Bradshaw bourbon. We've got Scotty Pippen bourbon back there. There's the bourbon. What is it? The horses? The iron horse, the one that had to do with the World Trade Center. That's here. I can't turn around and talk at the same time, so you have to do it.
Speaker 2:You've, you've covered it.
Speaker 1:Yes, there's a whole bunch of them here and this is one that's probably similar. The thing for me is I liked it because I'm such a baseball dork and I've got kids that play baseball and babe ruth is pretty cool. Um, I mean, until we get to show you otana tani right now, there probably has never been a baseball player like babe ruth how is otani doing?
Speaker 1:uh, he's playing great, uh, but he's not pitching yet. He's doing some bullpens. We'll see if he gets in there this year. Also a Yankee? No, he's in Angels he was never a. Yankee, maybe when he first started, but no, he's at the Anaheim.
Speaker 2:Okay, At least it wasn't a total mistake. No, no actually. Actually he might have went to the Dodgers. He was with the An.
Speaker 1:Yeah, otani's probably the closest to a two-way player that we've had. That's like Babe Ruth that could actually compete for hitting awards and pitching awards. So it's pretty cool. That's a rare error. That's all you got. What do you want me to do? I mean the bottle's cool, the bottle's, look. I mean you want me to go over all the little baseball stuff on the bottle. It's pretty sweet actually. Well, I mean.
Speaker 2:I thought you would. But another one is why do they do three different years? Because Babe Ruth's number was Three, number three.
Speaker 1:See guys there's so much packed into this one but you know what I only care about Doesn't that look like the?
Speaker 2:end of a baseball bat. It totally does. I wouldn't have noticed that.
Speaker 1:Look at the diamond. It's a diamond because of the baseball diamond, diamond because of the baseball diamond. But what if the juice sucks? Well, I don't know, we have to taste it. We've had good luck with mgp mgp's rise, their high rye mash bill has been, it's been, really solid. It's, first of all, it's old. I mean, it's been blended in a lot of things.
Speaker 2:yes, they were one of the biggest um distillates or makers of booze. Uh, I don't want to say in the world, but definitely in the united states. They were tied to the seagram's brand originally. Uh, these are just things I know off the top of my head because we we've kind of researched them a lot over the years and I've been there, um, but uh, yeah, you're right, you're right, all right.
Speaker 1:So I mean honestly when I, if this was like a like the scot Pippen one, all right, I don't want to throw the digits under the bus, but that's a no-name brand, like it doesn't have a brand behind it.
Speaker 2:So you're looking at it, I'm going to laugh. It's called digits.
Speaker 1:You're looking at it and being like who made this? What is this? When I see Rem, that remus repeals good juice, okay, so I'm hoping that this is good. Okay, is that a fair answer? I'm with you. I'm with you. I'm with you. I feel like I'm being deposed over here have you been to any baseball games?
Speaker 1:I've only been to one uh major league game this year. I went to opening day when for the arizona diamondbacks and the cubs were there. It was actually the cubs third game because they had the two games in Japan this year.
Speaker 2:I went to opening day at Wrigley for the Cubs and then I went last Sunday, took my old man to a Sox game. Both were great games, great to be. You know, april in Chicago, not the best. I usually try and stay away from those games other than opening day as a little higher level of kind of fun and anticipation and stuff like that. But good that we've both been to some games.
Speaker 1:Yeah, it's early in the season. My kids play baseball. I mean, I've honestly already been to. My senior in high school has already had 15 games, and my younger son's already had seven.
Speaker 2:How many have you been to over the 15?, 14. 14? Oh, because the one I was at that I didn't see you were grilling.
Speaker 1:I was there in the back. You didn't even get out of your car. Does that count being there? I?
Speaker 2:totally got out. I stood on the opposing team's side of the fence because I didn't. That's weak, it was weak.
Speaker 1:That's weak. No, I was good. Yes, they did 10-0.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it was 5-0 when I got there, anyway, anyway, so right into the nose we're good?
Speaker 1:Yeah, let's try it. We're done with the B&O stats. Yeah, why not? Now that you've deposed me, I'm curious if it's any good.
Speaker 2:Deposition has ended. I mean I always say MGP is nutty, but I think that's because I've always the early ones. I tasted early in my kind of whiskey endeavors. I mean it's got.
Speaker 1:Don't you get that? Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 2:I mean, there's also some bread notes.
Speaker 1:There's some bread. It's like cereal, bready cereal.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's like I don't know if it's how they mash up their grains, but it definitely gets that. That's when I just had the grain to glass, which is oh, that's the I. I just had the grain to glass, which is uh, um, oh, that's the heaven hill thing. Heaven, I wanted to say elijah craig, but it's heaven hill which did you which one did you get?
Speaker 1:there's three of them. Uh, not the rye. Okay, so that's the green one, and then there's a red and a blue bottle one is like okay, I think one might be a weeder and the other one is a bourbon, I think I got the bourbon and, uh, they, they.
Speaker 2:Not to get off topic of the Babe Ruth, but I thought it was going to be. It's called grain to glass. I thought it was going to kind of taste grainy. That's not what they were going for, of course, which was good, no, I think they're going for. It's actually really, really delicious.
Speaker 1:We'll have to do that on another podcast. I've actually got collection from last year, but there's another. But the J Henry out of Wisconsin does the same thing. They're doing grain to glass, where they're actually growing all the grains on their property and then that's what they're using for their mashables.
Speaker 2:Look at these getting creative. You can't just put brown water in a bottle. That's really good and it sells. Now you got to get extra creative with it.
Speaker 1:I feel like I read a press release last week or a couple weeks ago that Maker's Mark is doing the same thing. Now they're going to have a new one coming out, called that.
Speaker 2:That's cool. Yeah, I don't know. Anyway, definitely the rye spice, the high rye comes through For sure and a sweet kind of almost like sugary note I would say.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I think it's like an. I don't know, I never can get apples or anything, but it's definitely a fruity. There's some kind of fruit. It's not cherries. It's not cherries, no, not this time. Cheers, cheers, taste it is.
Speaker 2:It is finally that position has ended. Here comes the 110.
Speaker 1:Proof comes out 111. 111 I mean Can't read 55.5%. Sorry, my math messed me up.
Speaker 2:Pretty balanced yeah. A little zingy, a little hot pepper, a little more.
Speaker 1:Kentucky hot. That higher proof hangs down your throat a little more.
Speaker 2:Really nice finish, which I think is what a lot of people love of Remus and or MGP stuff. That rye just kind of stays in there, a little orange, but again, this is a bourbon, not a rye. It's a high rye bourbon.
Speaker 1:Correct. So the mixes the three years that you were talking about mix, there's a 2016 that was at a 49% rye. The three years that you were talking about mix, there's a 2016 that was at a 49 percent rye, there's a 2017 that's a 44 percent rye and there's a 2018 that's a 36 percent rye. And then from those they blend them to whatever the mash bill is. They don't tell us what percents of each they put. What other notes? Uh, to me it's more of a nutty yeah for sure At the end. Nutty, cinnamon, spicy, I mean it's, it's a high rise You're going to have.
Speaker 1:It's a lot of the same notes that I would say when we're drinking a four roses honestly, not as earthy, not as earthy as four roses. I feel like fouroses is a little different. I like this. Actually, this is, I don't know it's worth $150, but it's good for a bottle. That's what's it called. As you would say, it's just you've got somebody's name on it that's selling it. It's not like the brand's selling it. They're trying to sell it because of the name on the bottle.
Speaker 2:The Remus name or the Babe Ruth name. Babe Ruth, babe Ruth. They're trying to get more on that, so you are thinking it's a little.
Speaker 1:I'm thinking it's better than I was, anticipating it being for something that just has a name on it. Usually when you get names for musicians there's like that Metallica bourbon. I've never had it, but I'm sure it's nothing special. Middle West yep, I'm sure it's fine because Middle West does good stuff, but I can't believe that putting a bass drum to a barrel is going to make that much difference.
Speaker 2:Yeah, they play music to the barrels yeah, but there's a lot of.
Speaker 1:That is what I'm getting at and I feel like, just like you said earlier, you see all these little, these different names on these bottles, and then which ones are actually good and which ones aren't. I do like eight year, seven year and six year mixed together. I think that helps it a lot.
Speaker 2:Um back to you know, the whiskey world changing and getting creative. Uh, one other thing that's happening is whiskey is uh through all that and demand of course. Uh, whiskey is more expensive. So so I'm a little surprised. I'm fine with the Babe Ruth. I actually really like it. I think it's great, I think it's cool. But the $150 price point why'd they go there If this was a 10-year Sure.
Speaker 1:I think it's just a. I honestly think it's just number of. I mean, there's only 10,000 bottles and they probably the cost goes up. It's a pure economics play to me If you only got 10,000 bottles, if you got 40,000 bottles, it's a lot less, you can spread your costs out more.
Speaker 2:It's pretty tasty.
Speaker 1:It's better than I was anticipating you can say I doubted you.
Speaker 2:You could even say I doubted you.
Speaker 1:You don't have to say they heard you say that.
Speaker 2:The Sultan of Swat. Ten minutes ago, the Sultan of Swat.
Speaker 1:When you were deposing me ten minutes ago, you were harassing me that I picked a bottle that wasn't good and I think it's okay, I think it's above average.
Speaker 2:For sure I did beat up on you a little bit. I was laughing because I was beating up on my old man at that Sox game last week and he's like if you keep this up, I'm going to hit you or slap you. I'm like, oh, sorry, sorry, sir, I'll lay off dad, I'll lay off God, being rude to your dad.
Speaker 1:What the?
Speaker 2:heck, sometimes it has to happen. It doesn't have to happen. No, it has to happen because they're old.
Speaker 1:I don't know. I wasn't there. No, it has to happen because they're old. I wasn't there. I don't know what he was doing. I'll look back on this and regret it.
Speaker 2:I don't know what he was doing. For the moment, let's just pretend it didn't happen, even though it's recorded and we can always go back to this later.
Speaker 1:All right, I'll do it Shareable for sure. Why not? It's actually better than I anticipated. I think this is very shareable. Influence to me is 50-50 sideways. I like MGP. I know that area very well. It's really close to where I grew up. Price to me is poor.
Speaker 2:I wish it was half that price but I kind of get it.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I mean nothing wrong with this juice, no, but you look at the Remus Repeal, which is like their 10-year version of this, and it used to be $99.99, and now I think it's $129.99. And it's pretty good juice. Yeah, I mean they're not dumb, I'm just thinking out loud.
Speaker 2:They're pricing into. They rolled out their Remus brand and they said, hey, this is good enough and competes with a lot of stuff that's 60, 70, 90 bucks. So we're gonna say, hey, if you really want to try it, pay 100. And for this, hey, if you're, you know, a collector. And come on, baseball is all about.
Speaker 1:I was just gonna say you know how many Yankee fans and like Yankees and yeah, I mean how many Yankee fans?
Speaker 2:one surprise, you even got it. That's nothing.
Speaker 1:I mean yeah, I mean how many Yankee fans in. I'm surprised you even got it. That's nothing. I mean yeah, I mean how many Yankee fans Put this in one New York liquor store. Have a big blue stuff everywhere. Yeah, exactly so.
Speaker 2:I think it's got a little collector's item to it, but in MGP fashion they put really good. They put good stuff in there, in my opinion Juice in there and yeah, it's quite delicious, I have to say.
Speaker 1:You're going to give it to all three of them, or do you just agree with what I said? Shareable influence, price, Sharing it.
Speaker 2:Babe Ruth baseball influence price kind of atrocious yeah $150.
Speaker 1:Nobody likes spending over $100. I feel like $100 is that new number? That's just like if it's over 100, I seriously think about it. I'm like wait a minute, what is that? What am I?
Speaker 2:buying. But I would say, um, take the baby ruth out and just call it remus real or new reserve? Yeah, um, it's probably when you can find like those are really good.
Speaker 2:So if you see this and you're really into baseball and babe ruth, you know, pay up for the special. So if you see this and you're really into baseball and Babe Ruth, pay up for the special bottle. If you want something very similar and probably equally as good, or maybe even better, just go for the Remus Repeal Reserve. That's also a little hard to find. I don't know when the last one came out. I feel like it might be number 10, but don't hold me to that. But those, if you're kind of standing there like I want something new, I want something different, uh, remus is is a solid brand.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I don't think difference the right word. I think if you wanted to try something that, um, it's going to be good, it's going to be a good bourbon, that's worth a try. If you're gonna branch out into that hundred dollar mark, that's a hundred $120 mark, that's one to look at.
Speaker 2:Maybe I mean kind of like the previous podcast. I have to say that it has to be good, because mine's gone, it's always mine.
Speaker 1:I actually crushed it. What's your score?
Speaker 2:I'm going to give it a three and a quarter. Three and a quarter, look at that.
Speaker 1:For the first time, I think I stumped you. There was that I'll see you. I'll see your three and a quarter.
Speaker 2:I was kind of like I can go a little lower, I can go a little higher, so why not just fall? I felt it felt three and a quarter to me and then going out.
Speaker 1:I'm not gonna let you pick any more songs if you're gonna have them. Cuss at us from the first 30 words here we go again.
Speaker 2:You guys, have you ever? Have you ever heard tony? I mean on this podcast? I think I've said the F word, the D word.
Speaker 1:I don't cuss often. I always listen.
Speaker 2:I learned and maybe it's because of the industry I work in that I don't cuss.
Speaker 1:Everybody starts cussing and then I know I already won the conversation. So as soon as I start cussing at somebody, I know I've lost my temper and I lost whatever.
Speaker 2:I was trying to do. That's a really great point. I think they say the person that loses the argument first is the one that yells.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I raise my voice very infrequently, but if somebody gets all bent out of shape and they start cussing, I usually know I've already won. So at that point I can just twist it how I need to twist it.
Speaker 2:Our last podcast had, or two podcasts ago, had uh like 128 downloads in a week or something and I thought that was really great. Um, not like humble brag or anything, but I was gonna say I would love to have those 128 people in a room and have them roast us, have them be like I'm sure they'd all be like tony's the best. No, mike, you're a dick.
Speaker 1:You're rude, Mike.
Speaker 2:Or what if the opposite was true? I was just going to say I'd be like Tony's boring to listen to.
Speaker 1:He just talks about facts. Tony's the facts guy. It's a good thing Mike keeps everybody in line.
Speaker 2:We need a color man. But I was telling Tony, I listen to other podcasts, other bourbon and or whiskey podcasts, and there's kind of that's usually a theme and I think they say, like you know, you have to have a color man or you know you have to have, you know, a yin and yang, and a lot of them it's the same. There's a guy like being more factual, and then there's some guy being a little bit less one podcast. The guy's like I'm a novice, I don't taste any of that, I just know it's good, and he says that literally, like through dozens and dozens of podcasts, I'm like that's, that's that's an approach and that's actually like just if you like it, you like it, you know.
Speaker 1:You don't have to explain, you don't have to be able to be um, I guess, to be able to explain how you like it or why you like it. If you like it, you can just say, hey, I like this.
Speaker 2:Or you know what I don't like to be like. I'm sensing a slight fennel yeah, and I'm getting I'm getting some cardamom and there are plenty of bourbons.
Speaker 1:I don't like and you know that I kind of make and you usually kind of like almost look up at me twice, be like what you're talking negative about a bourbon. But there's a few of them name one of them right now off the top of my head. Yeah, old tub, I hate that stuff. I can't drink that at all that's the worst.
Speaker 2:It's so bad, not good shit ever sorry, sorry, anyway, so bad.
Speaker 1:But there's a bunch of them like there's that, there's just stuff you have. Sometimes you're like, oh, that was poor, that's gotta go away. I'm never gonna drink that again. Yeah, and when that?
Speaker 2:happens. I mean it's it's kind of rare, because that's usually just really young and you know not to buy young and cheap juice, yeah uh, but when you do or someone does or something made in some really far off land or state where you're like it's really hot there or it never, it's really like you're not gonna get any of the flavoring of the.
Speaker 1:This is a bourbon made in greenland.
Speaker 2:You're like, like huh that's weird.
Speaker 1:How's it going to get hot?
Speaker 2:Anyway.
Speaker 1:Oh well, all right, I'm going to let us out with some Imagine Dragons. This is one of the. It's actually a pretty consistent walk-up song that people play, and it's just a song. It's a fun song.
Speaker 2:Oh, I like this song. Yeah, it's a fun song. Thunder by Imagine Dragons, shot Chuckie, bourbon Brothers, mike and Tony. I got a little something else to sip on here.
