Episode 129 - E.H. Taylor Bottled-in-Bond, 2025 BTAC
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
After trading allocated bottles from historic brands, and a question every bourbon fan wrestles with: when does hype outpace the pour? We put E.H. Taylor Bottled-in-Bond from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection on the table after swapping out a Pappy 10 (Old Rip) and some cash to find out if the first-ever 100-proof BTAC earns its secondary price—or simply its place in history.
We set the scene with why “first and only” matters here: not a one-time release, but the only bottled-in-bond in BTAC’s lineage. Then we walk through the proofing journey, from 140 proof off the still, to 125 proof into barrel, to a composed 100 in glass, along with how water choice, temperature, and integration shape the final profile. With a massive 62 percent angel’s share over 15 years and 4 months, the bourbon promises concentration, yet it prioritizes balance over brute force. On the nose, we pick up apple, maple sweetness, vanilla, caramel, and oak. The palate drifts from a quick black licorice flash to soft fruits and an elegant finish of brown sugar, cinnamon, and light pepper. The surprise is the mouthfeel—clean and approachable rather than the heavy oil and intensity BTAC fans expect from Stagg or WLW.
That contrast leads to the big debate: is elegance at 100 proof a feature or a flaw in a lineup famed for high-octane hitters? This is excellent at MSRP and a meaningful step up from standard E.H. Taylor bottled-in-bond, but a tough sell at eight times retail on the secondary market. If you love the Taylor profile and want a milestone bottle, it’s a smart pick near retail. If you’re chasing BTAC thunder, look toward Stagg or WLW. For those building value-forward shelves, we also highlight standouts like Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, Bardstown Bourbon Company releases, Ezra 7, New Riff single barrels, and reliable daily sippers when you can find them.
Pour one, press play, and tell us where you land on rarity vs. flavor. If you enjoyed this breakdown, follow, share the show with a friend who loves bourbon hunts, and leave a review—your feedback helps more whiskey lovers find us.
Cold Open And Music Banter
SPEAKER_02I know I thought about something different. We were playing one of those songs last weekend and like we never played Ariadna. We just played something.
SPEAKER_01What was the reason for uh is there a derby coming up? What was the reason for the?
Pappy Trade Strategy Revealed
Introducing EH Taylor In BTAC
Why “First And Only” Actually Matters
SPEAKER_02I was just playing with the buttons before we started, and I was like, I haven't played that in a while. What is that horn called? Uh the bugle? The bugle, but like when they do that, like is that just the opening of a race or did they call it something? There is the name I can't remember. There's uh it's it's done before um my old Kentucky home. It it's when they call you to post, is whether it's a post. Yeah. Okay. Okay, that's all I was like, right. I carry there is an exact name for it. I just don't remember it. Sorry. Shy Tucky Bourbon Brothers, little Michael Stipe R-E-M. I can't. Um which I don't know, growing up, they kind of like hit my sound wave, and then they kind of were gone. And I think certain people are like, oh, well, that's like you didn't you didn't get into the first album or the second, and I might have gotten in the third or fourth or whatever, but they were never like a big time favorite. But like songs like that, you can't not love. I mean, this is a that's a classic one, but you know, they get they get credited for the uh people starting college rock music, like the genre of college rock. Which actually I'm serious. They say that they are see when Tony said I'm serious, it's because of the face I was making. Yeah, okay. Raise your hand if you've heard of college rock. Well, it's like it's like alternative. It turned into like the the early alternative rock. Okay, so they were I know alternative, I know that genre, but what they created I don't know. So then did they what did they actually create? I'm not saying it's just for me, but it's like so they say it was more of a distorted rock from like the late 70s. So their their sound, they say that they influence like gin blossoms and they are a very different brand in like like Radiohead, early radio head. I can see that, you know, maybe the Smiths. I didn't really get into the Smiths, but I know that music, some of it. I mean, it's just a real like 90s alternative band. It's like a clean, weird, it's like a it's like a jingle, it's almost like a jingle chiming music. I'm not gonna hate on REM, so I will see and admit to seeing what you're saying, and that makes sense based on the timeline of when they were around. It came out in like the 80s, actually, but I don't I didn't really know until the 90s. All right, well, what are we having today? I heard it's it's good. I see the bottle here, and I'm super excited. God, if I was a listener, I'd be like, move on. Oh, come on, come on. Well, have I said it enough, but special, special day. So Tony came to the whiskey house that he picked up a sought-after bottle, which is called the old Rip Wit Van Winkle, which is the Pappy Ten. Tenure. Yeah. And I looked it up in the aftermarket. What'd you pay for that? Um, retail$179.99, I think. Okay. Plus tax.$200. I looked up that people were offering more or less like north of$600. Give or take, let's just call it$600. Yeah. And I said,$60, do you want that, Tony? And he's like, not really, not specifically. No, I said trade it for something that we can get that we want. That's what I was getting to. So I said, All right. Tony gave me a little task. I grabbed the bottle and threw it under my arm and ran out the door. Um, well, the good part is he didn't drink it. It's a couple weeks later, it was uh I found a guy online that was selling what we're gonna taste today, which the aftermarket of this uh bottle is around$1,200. So$1,200 for a bottle of whiskey is a ton of money, no matter who you are or where you're from. And I thought, well, if we trade Tony's$200 bottle, which is now worth$600, we're almost not really cutting. Halfway there. Well, let's call it halfway there. Let's forget about Tony's$200. We're trading a six for a$12. We're halfway there. So what else we trade with it? That's what we did. We traded, throw a little cash in there. Anyway, what we're drinking today, the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection added a new bottle to their line. We know their line to be uh Eagle Rare and George T. Stag and William LaRue Weller and on and on. Uh, we know of uh what's called Taylor, and we know of E.H. Taylor, and they added E.H. Taylor uh to their line. E.H. Taylor is always, or I don't I want to say almost always, because I think there's they have a ton of different bottles, but almost always, let's just say, uh bonded, bottled and bond at 100 proof. And this one um is over 15 years old. And again, it is the first to the Buffalo Trace antique collection line. So some part of me was just like, it's the first one. Who knows how long it's gonna be around? And let's try the first one. So we did all that numbers and money swapping. I did, Tony did without really trying it, so we took a big risk on this, yeah, in an expensive kind of risky way. Uh, so we're hoping we like it, but um distilled spring of 2010. I already said 100 proof, I already said 15 years, four months, yeah. And um what do you want to tell us about Taylor? Well, the only thing I was gonna say is that you are almost a hundred percent accurate. The only Taylor that is not bottled in bond is their barrel proof. They have one bottle of all their skews. That's not anything.
SPEAKER_01That's kind of what I thought. I said you nailed it.
SPEAKER_02I'm saying you nailed it.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I thought you were making a correction.
SPEAKER_02No, you nailed it. Okay, good. And then uh mashville, it's not disclosed because it's Buffalo Trace. Um, they're saying they're using mashville number one, which is their low rye recipe. Um, most people put that in the what I think it's the 70 range, 60 to 70 range of corn, low rye, little barley, and here we are. Um, I don't really have a ton about it. It was their first release, it's got this cool uh foil on the top that said first and only. I noticed that. I brought the bottle in and I said, Tony, first and says send it to me. We know what first is, only to means to me means they're not gonna do it again. I was like, this is the only time we're they're doing it.
SPEAKER_01Well, it's a little play, it's a little play on words.
BTAC Lineup And Proof Context
Proofing 101: From Still To Bottle
Tasting Notes: Nose, Palate, Finish
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they got you. So I I did a little looking into it because I was like, that is weird. And if this isn't only, if this is their first and only and they're never doing it again, we should probably get a second bottle just because it's the only one that's ever around. And I think this at 15 years, you were talking, we were talking earlier that it had crazy amount of uh angels. Um what do you call it when they steal the when they steal share angel share, tons of angel share on this guy. So 62% evaporation in 15 years, four months. But anyway, it does not mean it's a one-time release, it refers to the fact that it's the first and only bottle and bond bourbon ever released in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. So Buffalo Trace Antique Collection has existed since 2000. None of them. This is the first one that is 100 proof. Yes. Go through the other ones and what they were the first or the only of. Okay, so there's Steg, George T. Steg, barrel proof, high. I think this year's was like 140 proof, super high. William LaRue Weller, barrel proof weeded. It's a weeder, it's my favorite of all time. We talk about it all the time. Handy, barrel proof rye. It's a rye and it's a barrel proof. I can't remember the percents, but I feel like it's close to 120, 130. The Eagle Rare 17 is a 90-proof product, except for in 2018. In 2018, it came out at 101 proof, so it's the closest they've ever had, but they brought it back down to the standard Eagle Rare 90 proof, and then Sazurac 18, which I really don't know very well, but I know it's 90 proof. Correct. Wow. Okay, so this is the can't believe I had that on the top of my head. Only bonded. I mean, that was I can't believe it either. That was a fucking lot. Well, I want to touch on something because it's kind of a was a learning moment for me. Um, which I think if you're into whiskey, uh, if you're into distillation and things like that, you will also be interested in. Uh, we said this comes in the bottle at 100 proof. Guess what? It comes off the still at 140 proof, it goes into the barrel at 125 proof. So there is some, I would call it watering zone. Is it just water? If it's barrel 125 in, what does it come out? Um and uh what do they do to get it to 100 proof, you ask. Well, I would assume it's just watering, but it is called you can call it watering down if you want, but if you're you know really into this game, you're gonna it's known as proofing. Oh and proofing is you know, in a lot of ways, adding water to the uh to the product, correct? But um there are different factors that play into it, which I thought was important, which is um, and they say there's a science to it, um, not only the measurement of it, you don't just dump a bunch of water in, important temperature control, where are they doing it, uh, meaning the outside temperature, what is the temperature of the whiskey? Um, they allow time for the whiskey or the spirit to what they say integrate and settle um in the result because they want the result to be of also a very balanced. If it starts out as a higher proof balanced whiskey, they don't want to add water and have it be unbalanced. Do you know, does it have to like the watering proofing, does that water have to be at the same temperature as it's coming out? Or does it does that matter? I'm just I'm curious just from what you were saying. Doesn't really talk about the temperature, whether it's the outside temperature or the temperature of the product, but when we're talking about a balance, why would you mix a super warm whiskey with a super cold water? Right, probably not a good balance, or vice versa. Um you would think it'd be hard to mix, I guess. They don't really get into I thought they would it's definitely more chemistry. I'm not a chemist at all. The quality of the water, and they say, you know, reverse osmosis water is the most common choice. And I'm like, Really? It's not limestone. I feel like it's always limestone water. Well, in Kentucky, it is, but what they do with the water after um comes out of the ground. Interesting. So proof of I mean I have to do a little I'm gonna do a little research on bottled water. Wouldn't would you say that you know Evian tastes different than Fiji? No, a lot of people I cannot a lot of people would. So the fact that they're not talking about it being a specific Kentucky limestone reverse osmosis water bubble, I'm like I also can't tell the difference between vodkas, they all taste the same to me. Um, I would disagree on both. Okay, but I think sometimes I've never done a blind tasting of either, but I feel like shitty tap water is different. I'm saying bottled water. You put different bottled waters, I feel like they're all the same. And I feel like vodka's pretty much taste the same to me, but I don't drink a lot of vodka, so I'm not a great probably uh indicator of that. Because I'm sure there's some people that say all bourbons taste the same, and then I would kick them in the head.
SPEAKER_01Well, it's it's all it's right.
SPEAKER_02There's some vodka, some like martini fans out there that are like, uh Tony, you're totally wrong. And then there's like water connoisseurs that are like, oh gross, I can't believe we drink that crappy whatever brand. Um all right, so Buffalo Trace, um, antique collection, E.H. Taylor. Um, oh, did we get into the retail price of this? Do you have that side? Yeah, 150. 150 bucks. Yeah, so we're sitting at a solid and went in at a value of around 1200. So that's that's a time. 8x.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's that's a shitload.
Expectations vs Reality At 100 Proof
SPEAKER_02All right, let's uh let's smell it. Yeah, let's do it. Um I'm this is something that I'm happy we were able to get. Man, it smells pretty classic. It's I would say the one thing that that's a little different, slight to me is like an apple-ish. You nailed that right there. For sure. I mean, I feel like there's a lot of the common stuff. I I um yeah, you know, you can always get the caramels and you can always get the vanillas and the baking spice, and but to me, uh little apple. A good amount of sweetness. I would say like a for me, like a maple sweetness. Okay. Like a like a syrupy, um, maybe even like dripping off the tree, maple syrupy kind of uh smell. Um nuts, you're getting some nuts there? Some nuttiness? Great call there, too. You're on today, bro. Um yeah, it's how do I put it? Um it's like a s uh like a sweet nutty. Which sweet nuts would be either like a um It's still that apple. That it's to me, it's an overwhelming apple. I don't know, maybe I just have that apple in my head. Maybe supposed to have one for lunch or something, but I I'm getting a little bit of like I wouldn't say overwhelming. Well it's not like it's over. Yeah, okay. That's a bad, it's not overwhelming. Like, but the one thing that sticks out other than normal, like the nuttiness to me is a little bit of a stretch at the end. Um it's more of the that sweetness for me is the apple. Like I there's so much vanilla, so much oak, so much caramel. Tons, tons of wood. I mean, like the 15-year um I mean it's like you were the the wood and the char of it is definitely. Let's taste it. Let's taste it because that the smell is really good. Yeah, we want it, we want it. We beat the shit out of that. It smells into the ground. I mean, we smell the shit out of that. All right. Light, way lighter than I was anticipating. Well, it's a hundred-proof, and these these BTACs are known to be burn you out of your chair if you're not ready sometimes. I had a stag last night, and I think it was 135. 35, 135, 135. Like, whoa, it like it actually didn't sit right with me as good as stag kind of always. Oh, you love stag. It was just it was too late in the night for it. It was too yeah, it was too late. It's too late. We shouldn't have pulled it up. Um, cinnamon. Cinnamon, cinnamon, don't forget the cinnamon. Kind of um kind of candy-ish, kind of fruitish, um, kind of almost like sugary. You know, there's this there's there's this little taste right when I first taste it, before I chew it, before anything, just little taste that comes across as almost like a little bit of a black licorice. Very in and out, but there's a little bit of this. At first I thought I might have like just had a weird taste in my mouth, but it it keeps coming back. I agree, and I hate lack licorice, but this is like it's quick, it pops in and pops out, and then it's mid-palate, like it's before the finish, balance, deliciousness, and then along with like kind of the soft fruits, like that apple is is on the nose is gone. No, no, there's none of that. Yeah, it's more like uh something soft, like peach. Um you know, uh, I would say a fruit that's not well. Some peaches are really juicy and just have so much to them. So maybe, maybe peach is wrong, but like a softer, lighter, lighter fruit. Um yeah. Not a super sweet like a cherry, like it doesn't really, it's more like it doesn't go that far. It's just more like a it's something quick there at the beginning, and then when the finish hits, I feel like the finish gets into your your brown sugar, your baking spice, your pepper. It just gets into that light spice at the end that I just it's really, really, it's really tasteful. I really like this. I mean, but it's not what I was expecting on a BTAC. I hate to say it like that. I was like, something more to be me off. Are you listening thinking no one's really crushing on this one?
SPEAKER_01No, Tony's kind of dancing around like it's a little bit more. Spent$1,200 on it. Should you have tried it first, Mike?
Value, Secondary Prices, And Sharing
SPEAKER_02Um, yeah, it's um you think so? You think we're dancing on this? I think we are a little bit. It's very good. It's very good, it's very balanced. Um, I think in BTEC, we always uh We're used to it smacking us in the face, man. BTEC is like if you get something under 120 proof that's not equal rare, and I don't I have some of those ER17s. We don't really open them because we just don't. Like I know I've I feel like I've had one with you down at a local bar that had them on sale or something, like a sips, just to taste it. Um but a lot of people don't like how light it is for BTEC. And this I'm just I don't know. I I the lightness might be taking away from the flavor and back to the the proofing as red flat. I didn't even I didn't even think to tie those two together, but it's soft they proof they proofed it down. Here's what I'm gonna go with Buffalo Trace antique collection always has a mouthfeel that is like so warming, so oily, typically almost always delicious, and that also comes with that higher proof. And uh I'm not getting that like viscous mouthfeel, you know, just aside from flavor, it just like has the bones of just like the basis of just being really fucking good. This is like really good, but it like it's missing that big, big piece, which is like that mouthfeel. It's like it just has a little lighter touch to it. It this is there this to me, because I think if this would have been a higher proof where it gave us some more complexity and a longer finish, we'd have a completely different look on how we're saying this. But I think it keeping it in their you know, normal tailor profile of a bonded drink, this 15 years so much better than their storm, their normal small batch and single barrel bonded. Great point. I mean, it's so much better. And obviously at MSRP, it's twice the cost, it's worth twice the cost, it's probably worth way more than that compared to the normal bonded bottle. But I hate using butts, but but because this is BTEC, we are expecting something to blow our socks off. And I don't think this blows our socks off. I think this is excellent. I think there's no gimmicks, I think this is it, it's there's no Fireworks. Ooh, no gimmick. There's no fireworks on this one. Like I'm expecting a like I get VTech. We we look for it, we trade for it, we were always searching for it. We we hope to find something close to retail. And this one, even if it, even if I bought this one for three times retail, it's worth every dime. I'm not sure this is worth eight times retail. It's not that's that's the problem. We finally hit on it.
SPEAKER_01We paid eight times retail, and we wish we were in it for four times retail. We still would probably knock talk about knocking people's socks off. They're like, you fucking idiots. You did what? You just got fucking money to burn? You just no, no, no. We traded.
SPEAKER_02It's different. I traded, we traded stuff at retail. It's not the end of the world. Let's forget it's hard. That's hard. So we're 600 plus the 200. So really well, not why are we saying, why are we saying we're in it for 1200? Because that's that's what you said it was worth. You paid 200. Okay, so we're we're we're close. I paid 200. I'm just telling you that I wish I wish this had a little more complexity bite at the end for a 15 year. I wish it did. I think that the soft balance, it's it's all you know what it is, it's almost crowd pleasing. It's almost crowd pleasing. It's an easy drinker. You said it earlier. It's an easy drinker. You drink it and you're like, you know what? I want another one of these. I want another one of these. I mean, we're really, I like that you're really fighting for your points. I'm fighting to give it a big score.
Solid Alternatives Under $80
SPEAKER_01I'm fighting. And but but you're making your points. You're you're it's taking a while. We're really spent way too much time on the street. Long time breath today. Way too much time. Way much too much time on REM. Here we are. Here we are, and we finally. Does everyone feel like we got to the bottom of it?
SPEAKER_02Good. Okay. We've gotten to the bottom of it. Time to separate it. Shareable. Hold on. Hold on. We want to, I want to say one more time. Okay. We did not, we're not in this for$1,200. I know, I know.$200.$100 plus$600.$800. A couple trades. We're not even in for that. Way better. Okay. All right. This is what I'm going to say. Shareable, absolutely. You're sharing an$800 bottle. Not if I have to pay for it. No, I am. I honestly I'm probably not going to search for it if it's if it doesn't get more in the future years. But um, I would stick to my WLW in stag. Uh shareable, absolutely, for people, especially for people that like Taylor, because I'm telling you, this is so much better than the regular Taylor. Like it's a ridiculous. Like, if I think a regular Taylor is a three, this is this is significantly better than a regular Taylor. Uh, influence to me is off the charts. I love Buffalo Trace. I love the whole EH Taylor. I mean, he's the he's the father of modern bourbon. I mean, he was like, he's the guy that was like the the dork dude that was super into cleanliness. And he built Buffalo Trace when it was the old the old S deal. Yeah. Price, retail's fucking great. Two and three times it's great. Secondary, not great.
SPEAKER_01All right, we got through that. All right, your turn. What do you think?
Wrap-Up And Music Outro
SPEAKER_02Shareable. Yes, because I want to see what other people think of it. Other people that don't even know what Buffalo Trace Antique Collection is, don't even know anything about Taylor, don't know all that other stuff, crap, whatever you want to call it, that Tony and I know. So I want to put it in front of a lot of people, and I'm ready to do that. Uh Influence, I mean, covered a million times, Buffalo Trace. Uh they put out incredible stuff and have for a long, long time. And price it took the whole podcast to get me from 1200 down to 800. And I finally like, I broke a sweat, and finally, okay, getting there. And at that price, uh, I'm not super proud of it. Um, but uh I'm still happy to own it, and I think it's uh I'm happy to have it. Yeah, it's really good. And um I'm looking forward to having another pour of it. I was just gonna say, I mean, I'm I'm honestly gonna have another one like right now. That was really good. It's a really good drinker. It's a great drinker. You want to give it a number first, or you want me to give it a number? I want you to. Alright, I'm giving this a three point. Oh my god, am I gonna go higher than three five? Three point seven five. I think it's I think it's a three point seven five. I think it's excellent for what it is. It just sucks about the price. If the price was retail, I'd probably be over four at four. I think I'm I'm docking it because it's so expensive and hard to get. I'm okay with you docking it for that. Um it's not a four whiskey. I agree with it. It just isn't. It's not a three whiskey, so does that put it right in the middle at three and a half? That's what I'm gonna do. I'm just gonna say it's far from a three, but it's kind of far from a four. So three and a half is still a very standout whiskey. Um, but I think if you listen to our podcast, uh you'll find out. I was just hoping for this to be like a four and a quarter. I was hoping standout whiskeys for fucking 60 bucks. Yeah. I don't know if we have any standouts in like the 20 and 30 range. So when you go to the store, maybe like brand break 50, I usually would suggest. But hey, like a Burnheim and Bernheim weed or that weeded whiskey is getting all kinds of rewards. That that Middle West, there's a met that Middle West stuff is coming out. Are they at 60 now, though? They might be at 60. Um, the there's some good stuff out there. The barge town has always got good good booze for 55, 50 to 60 bucks. Um, I've always liked that Ezra 7 that's sitting at like 60 bucks. Good one. I mean, that's one we don't talk about. I mean, you know, if you can get the Eagle Rare, if you can get the Green River, Green River's everywhere, but those are in the low 30s, those are very good, but those aren't really sipper sippers. I mean, they're good, but they're not crazy. But all the drags, 75. But those are barrel-proofs. You're gonna hit 70 to 80 bucks for those mostly. New riffs, 55. Yeah, that's a good call. That's a good call. What are you looking around the room? That's awesome. Um, I'm I'm looking at actually the whiskey advocate whiskeys of the year. Uh, grab a copy. Oh, yeah, what do they got for number one? Um, number one was actually a rye. It was Eagle Rare's um sorry, Eagle Rare, uh Elijah Craig's uh barrel proof rye, which was the A925 Um 125. Did they come out with three versions of rye this year? I didn't know that. Yes. Wow. This is the first one. So their first one. Um how old was it? Uh a 12-year-old. Sweet. And and a lot of it wasn't just Wizky Advocate. I've I've follow a few guys that uh definitely hit a lot of people's top fives. Wow. Yeah. What else is on there? Anything that did that you said that seller age earlier hit their higher? Lots of uh lots of scotches, um uh Stranahands, Yellowstone. Um Hard Sound Bourbon Company had one. Uh Middle West, uh their straight wheat whiskey. Did it still Austin hit? Just curious. I've I've heard so much good stuff about them lately. No, no, no, good. I I want to get one of them. We're gonna do a podcast on one of them soon. Um I'm I've heard so much good stuff. Are we done? I think we're done. What are we going out on? I'm so excited. We're we're gonna stick with uh we're gonna stick with a little bit of uh REM and we're gonna go out with a little bit more of a track that not everybody knows as well, but it's a good a good groove. And it's called Radio Free Europe. It's a good groove, you said? Listen catchy? Yeah. So to you that's groovy. To me it's catchy to you, it's groovy. It's a groovy one. Groovy. Drinking EH Taylor, Bubble of Trace Antique Collection. Just came out, just hit the shelves. If you can find it, like we said, you might have to pay up a little bit for it, but uh, we take care of the whiskey so you can focus on with whom you share it. Get out there, and if you're not paying up and drinking one of these, bam, bam. I love that part. Uh get something else that we reviewed uh either already this year or last year, because we've had a lot of good ones. And why I went through that top 20 list is a lot of people's lists are coming out from last year. And a lot of stuff we drank is not a lot of these. Yeah, we did good this year, including that um maker's mark that's Dollar Age. Dollar Age. That's coming out of everyone's list. That was number three in whiskey advocates. Anyway, good to hang with you, Tony. Yeah, it's a really good one. Really good. A lot of fun. You know, stay warm, guys. It's winter time. Stay warm. Chill you out. Get a whiskey. All right, see ya. Bye.
