A $60-$80 single barrel bourbon should not taste like furniture polish, yet sometimes it does and that’s the risk we all sign up for when “single barrel” is on the label. We pick up that thread and go deep on Colonel E.H. Taylor Single Barrel from Buffalo Trace, starting with a bottle that didn’t taste right and ending with one that absolutely delivers.

And we talked about the difference in price to uh it's senior, which is known as the single barrel. And we finished that podcast and we opened our single barrel bottle. And I'm like, we've had this before, and it doesn't taste right. It kind of had like a varnishy taste, and a single barrel, just one barrel, and they put it in a bottle and they ship it off, and people buy it, and you don't really know exactly what you're getting. 20 minutes. So I take some phone calls, do some phone calls, do some work. It's Friday afternoon, feeling good after a few of those uh first pours. Tony comes back with three bottles. Enter Tony and I dorking out. Really quickly, I was like, he opened there's he comes with three bottles. Two weren't opened, they came out of the uh EH Taylor tubes. They come in really canister tubes, really fucking cool. And um one was open, one was a Benny's barrel pick, which is our local, I'll call it Midwest liquor store. And I'm like, well, let's try that first. Like, taste, taste, taste. Whoa, that's not skunky, that's not bad, like that other one, hence why Tony had it was it was like in your face, good butterscotch. Well, we'll taste it again. Then I go, Well, how do you Tony and I like admittedly, I don't want to we're tailor single barrel novices. I'm like, how do you know the year you bought any of these? There's no year statement on the bottle, there's nothing. So Tony's like, hold on, let me AI, let me let me. I Googled it. I was like, how do people figure out the age? And there's an etching, there's a number, there's a barcode, more or

less, like weirdly at some bottom, you gotta hold it up to the light to see this little tiny number, and here comes the dorkiness. Now we're Tony's like, Did you know the letter L means this? And then this number, the last number is actually the year of the date of the Rick House of the whatever.

And I'm like, holy shit, but like the numbers have to do with the number of days of the year it was bottled on, and it's fucking crazy. Weird information information overloads.

So then I like had to leave the room for a minute. I'm like, Tony, Tony, like this is getting a little too crazy. Like, I Tony's like running calculations and pulling out calendars, and I'm like, Holy shit. So we figure out that we we didn't forget about the Bini's, but the two that were he brought over that were unopened were from 2020 and 2023. See, and we're like, okay, which and then he starts re-researching more and more and more, and like I will let him talk now to get into it. But we opened one of them, he'll tell you which one we opened. Um, but I just had to tell you what has what has kind of transpired over the last at least hour before the other podcast. Before that, which was another probably 90 minutes. We've been like sitting here for hours and hours, not really drinking. Like, I mean, I've learned a lot about this is crazy. So your turn. No, I've learned a lot about EHL. So there's an etching, um, there's a letter, the first letter letter just has to do with the battling bottling line, and then there's a four-digit number. And the four-digit number has to do with the number the the bottled on the whatever day of whatever year. So the first two, so um, plain and simple, we have two bottles. We have a B. We have an L.

And uh But go through what the the numbers on the what whatever it means.

So on this, L means nothing. L means nothing. It's a it's a bottle line and indicating lot number. So it really has nothing to do with it.

Okay, so tell us what does matter.

Uh but what has to do is there's uh the a four a three or a four-digit number next. So it says 610 for this particular bottle. So that's the 161st day of 2020. Not sure exactly how they figured all that out, but that's what that that's what that means. And that what day that turns into when you look it up on a calendar, the 161st day of 2020 was June 9th. Okay. So kind of cool.

So we're drinking a June, it was bottled June 9th, 2020.

Yes. And then there's other numbers, but they just have to do with internal batch numbers. So that probably if we had access to the Buffalo Trace database, all these numbers would tell them probably exactly not only which warehouse, which we're pretty confident this is warehouse C, but it'll probably tell me what floor, what section, maybe even the actual bottle number, barrel number, because these things all have barrel numbers and stuff. This place, I mean, these places are really high tech now. They're just gonna be.

Bottling Date And Age Guess

No, I don't actually don't have anything great. I just I tried to ask, I asked if they could figure out any estimates for the age of our bottle, and they said that most barrels filled between 2009 and 2011 were in Rick House, or I'm sorry, in warehouse C. Um, put the bottle between nine and eleven years old. There's no way to determine it without having access to that Buffalo Trace log.

Okay. So do they know anything about what it tastes like?

Or no, they have a lot of different like they they know that um because there's been so many of these barrels, so many single barrels, they have cataloged uh probably the period that shows what they have. So like this period has been very consistent of having good juice, which is good because like you said earlier, a single barrel can be a bunky one too. So this area has more of those. And then um, other than that, it just has it has exceptional fruit notes. And they said the secondary market I'll be the judge of that. That's what it says. And it says the ex it says the secondary market chatter consistently favors 2020 and 2021 single barrels over 2023 and 2024.

I think Tony at one point in that like nerd out session with like a higher pitched voice said, Oh, I I get so excited when we have something really good to taste. And I was like, I kind of wanted to say, me too. But it was like we just got into a moment there where I'm like, this is a lot of fucking fun. This is a lot of fun if you're uh you don't have to nerd out that far. But um, I think what it comes down to is these single single barrels are they're just and they're just fun, they're just fun to yeah.

You know, we went back, I went to listened. Yeah, I went back and listened to the little bit of that podcast uh with uh Jason. And yeah, I we both talked about. I mean, Jason, I think had way more single barrel experience than we did, and he specifically said that some of them just aren't good. And you and I kind of agreed that we didn't think that was a great bottle. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't good. Um that Benny's pick.

That's right. So we had him on. Yeah, he was drinking his, which he really liked, and you and I were kind of fighting through we were like, This is not what you're saying. Yeah, he was like, Oh, like really getting into like the caramely butterscotch and the wood. And I'm like, this uh mine kind of tastes like um the like a lacquered leg of a couch, like it, like just like if you like it's so we I have it out, so we have it out right now.

If you were here, there's we've got a sip of that same single barrel that we did a few years ago with Jason, and then I have this Benny's pick. Um Benny's Benny's is a local liquor store for those of you not from Chicago, and they are known to have exceptional barrel picks. Um hopefully, you know, we like the same palettes of the guys doing the barrel picks, but as as a big thing, they're known to have very good. And then we opened up this 2020. So right now, Mike and I have six glasses sitting out, three each. All of them little single barrels, all half ounces, and we're trying to figure it out. And they taste very different. And it's funny that the same $60 retail you know bottle tastes this different.

First Tasting Of The 2020

Told you it was gonna get nerdy. All right, we are going to be. Which one do you want to taste first? We're tasting the one we just the etched just the L etched. The L-etched 2020 June 9th Colonel E. H. Taylor single barrel. Correct. Single barrel, not small batch, guys. Okay. Um a good I'd say a good balanced nose. I would say the nose, though, when you compare it to like a rich sweetness comes through. Not crazy different than the small batch, but again, a richness that I feel like I'm gonna really like. I would say that and a sweetness that sweet there's a lot of sweet forward notes. Like a little oaky. I can like you're smelling some age. The wood is definitely getting in there.

Finish, it ends that way a little spicier. No, it's got it's got a little, yeah, it starts a little dry and then just opens up. And that opened up its. I would say this is a medium to long finish. Um I mean this is this has got some flavor. Um these things are known to have like a sweetness and a fruit forward. It's almost got like a oh, I don't know what flavor that is. Here, take a sip. They talked about a coming out.

Okay, this is coming out of left field, but I had an apple the other night. I love having an apple at night because it's better than like an ice cream cone or something. But it has like that sugar, and you bite into the apple, it's like that like and then the sugar and the juice comes out of the apple as you start to chew it. Again, I'm coming out of left field, sorry. But that's how this is. It kind of like starts out as like dry and nothing, and then it's mid-tongue. It's like you can like follow it down your tongue. It's the craziest fucking thing in a really cool way. And mid-palate, you're like, uh whoa, whoa, whoa, here comes the sweetness.

And then it kind of ends with a little it's kind of like you can it's traveling, it's it's got that long finish, it's it's got that medium to long where you can feel it at the back of your tongue kind of going down your throat, almost like a almost like a little bit of a Kentucky hug, but usually those come with either much younger or much higher proofs, but it's got a little bit at the very end.

And and that mid-palette that I was talking about, and why I picked an app an apple, because it is citrusy. It's it kind of starts out um kind of dry and oaky, and then mid-palate is like citrusy sweetness.

It's like a grape juice almost, like a grapefruit. Yeah. Like a citrus. It's not, it's not like it's it's like a it's not really orange.

It's more of a I'm glad you didn't say orange, because I was gonna get it.

It's not an orange, it's more of a, it's more, but citrusy, I always think orange and lemon, honestly. But it's more like a grapefruit, it's got a little something, a little sweeter in there, a little sweeter one. I don't know much of it.

I might even go with like uh um the smoothness of a of a honey. I I would agree that there's honey in this. Honey's very popular now, and when you put it on stuff, it doesn't like crazy change the flavor, it just mildly like sweetens it up or gives it a little something like a hot honey pizza. It's like the hot, it's like the spice, but like it doesn't really change it, it just kind of like sweetens it up a little bit, and that's what this does. It's like it has it, it has like an elevated sweetness, but not this like, oh my god, this is like some big, big cherry craziness, or um, or some chocolatey, like something really like sugary and sweet, or like a candy. Uh it's good. Excellent.

I mean, whoa. I mean, I think the end of it. Which is it? Is it good or is it excellent? I mean, this is it's better than good, but uh excellent's tough to to catch up. I I almost think the end of it's got a little bit of a peppercorn, a little bit of a pepper-ish because of how long it lasts coming down your you kind of it always falls to that, even though I'm not getting like that earthiness out of it, but I'm getting that like pepper-ish long. I I just I'm it's almost like I don't know, I don't know if it's like a Starburst or something. There's some kind of fruit in here that's just I can't get it at the beginning. That's just really good. It's really solid.

So on the podcast before this with the um small batch, I think also why we're kind of like getting really into this is that Tony and I realize that we've spent a long time not giving Taylor small batch, but definitely single barrel it's what it's due, which is I don't think we gave it ever, any of it.

We really have we loved the four-grain and we tried the new antique collection one and thought it was good, but not worth the up price. So we just kind of like shelved these for some reason.

And they shouldn't have and they're Buffalo Trace, and I think the next level of this is the antique collection, impossible you typically to find, and they get marked up into like the thousands, well into the hundreds and thousands and whatever. Um, but this is kind of I said it before, and I don't know you didn't really respond or agree or disagree, but this is kind of the poor man's version of that, and that's poor man sounds like horrible, I don't mean it, but you can pick these up. Uh it's a 60 fucking dollar bottle, and

even at double that, like something this good for like low to mid-100s compared to mid-1000s, like this is it's got the complexity, it's fun, they're different every time. Yeah, you might spend a hundred bucks or whatever and not get a good one. But if you're dorking out like us and you're pulling laser codes and you're doing the research, you probably can figure out the good ones, and then you're right to like Elijah Craig's, where you you and I know those like the being of our hands.

Anyway, um, if you go with that theory, a lot of these barrel strength things that we like and we talk about a lot: the four roses, the Elijah Craig's, the Larcenies, this, these would be what I would put at that layer. These single barrel, barrel strength, very good. They don't come out all the time. I mean, this one might come out more, but like I know Larceny and I know Elijah Craig only come out three times a year each. Um, the Four Roses obviously has those all the letters that you make fun of me for explaining to everybody every time we talk about. We're not going to get into that. High rye, low rye. I got nervous the first thing.

But the I think that if you're getting into that quote unquote poor man's antique collection, what what we're gravitating towards is true barrel strength single barrel bourbons that I have uh the reputation. And it and it really comes down to if it's Heavenhill, if it's Buffalo Trace, um, you know, uh it can be a lot of different places. Honestly, I don't know if I don't know if Bardstown's doing one like that yet. I know makers, makers has got their barrel like their seller age stuff that's not really barrel strength percent.

That new one just came out. Uh I think it's also an 11-year, and that's that's yeah, you're you're right. Actually, but I think it's I think it's like 180 bucks.

So that's a bad, that's a bad example for my dollar, my dollar and cents. But I think what we're talking about is that you if you're if you like this kind of stuff, you you sh you need to be gravitating towards single barrel barrel strength stuff. And and I would tell people, if you find a liquor store um that that you like the same palette as the people picking these barrel strength things, man, there are a lot of really good store picks out there. Yeah, lots and lots and lots. Russell's does theirs, didn't even bring them up. Russell's is another perfect example. That 10-year Russell's barrel strength is is legit.

But these these brands that have done it for 15, 20, 30, 100 years, the proof is there perfectly. Uh very, very specific. Of course, these tailors are always hunterproof and bonded. Um, but they figured that out a long time ago how to do that well with the warehouses and the rick houses and the level and the different floors and all that. And the age is spot on. Like, I I kind of think this is so good that it's probably more tipping the scales at that 11 year um more than eight or nine. Um, but they just they they hit that perfect sweet spot. And yeah, you can go after the really sought-after, kind of almost like celebrity brand stuff and spend, I don't know, let's just go with anything north of 500 bucks. Yeah, you can. Or you

can find stuff like this where you're like, hey, I'm not gonna like every single barrel, I'm not gonna like every brand. Uh, I might not like Russell's and I love Taylor or vice versa, or four roses, or whatever.

Because they just again they hit that sweet spot where they're like, we can diff we can differ kind of on the scale a little bit, but we're not gonna differ where so far that we do something that's too old or too young or too crazy of a proof. Um, so it's always, always good. And some of it is really great, spectacular. Like at minimum, you're like, that's that's a great pour. And then some of it is like, holy shit, you really hit the nail on the head.

I think you just have to, you just like you said, you just have to not it just because you get a bad single barrel, you you can't throw a brand away. You just gotta throw the bottle away. Because sometimes you get these barrel single barrels that are in the wrong spot, you got a bad one. And it sucks to say that and to weigh 60 to 100 bucks, but sometimes you just gotta do it. But you you gotta give stuff a couple chances, and I feel like that's a big that's a big deal.

And it's just crazy. Like the reputation is just it's funny how it all let leaves. Taylor obviously left early, stag continued continued distillery, turned it into one of the largest in Kentucky. Um, but really, I mean it got it it was it was quite uh quite a feud that back in the day. If you want to read something that's kind of industry, kind of interesting about the um you know early times of bourbon and how it all started. The E.H. Taylor and George uh George Stag feud is is interesting. Uh so anyway, and Flesh and to me is awesome. I I really enjoy this brand um and Buffalo Trace in general. Obviously, Stag's under Buffalo Trace now, and it just makes sense. Price, I mean, if you get one of these for 60 bucks, you should buy one every time you see one. If you give it for 80 bucks, you should buy it every time you see one. At $100, you think about it, because you do get some bad barrels, bad, bad, but I can tell you right now, I've got three of them. We've got four of them sitting here on the table, and uh one of them is not as good as the other, but it's not like a dumper. I don't think. I mean the one that's not great is not great, but it's not a dumper. I'm not dumping that down the drain.

Like I think that's kind of an error bottle where other people should try it, and maybe someone's like, oh my god, this is just like right up my palette, right up my alley. Um shareable. Uh I'm gonna go even further than shareable to where I'm gonna start buying these single barrels um for myself and for gifts because I'm like a decade behind on how much um I should have consumed this. They've put out some other little lines, and I want to try those. Like Tony said, there was a four-grain, which was kind of a one-off release, which was spectacular and also very expensive. And then um are crazy expensive and good.

They got that marriage, that 18-year marriage, they got the tornadoes, they've got they've got a lot of one-offs that are very sought after, very special. Um we don't I don't think we have any of those. I also don't think I've tried to get them. I think we could get them if we worked harder at it. I just don't think it's worth the chase.

Uh, with uh brown booze being a little less popular, maybe they're all down to 60, uh back to 60 or 70, and a very much of a steal compared to stuff that is well into the uh into the three figures.
