Michelle Hammer

Michelle Hammer is an activist, who makes videos and other content about her experience living with schizophrenia. Because, turns out, most of us don’t really know much about what schizophrenia actually is. She spends her time passionately fighting stigma, and even created a clothing brand to do just that - it’s called Schizophrenic.NYC, and its designs are intended to start conversations about mental health. They feature slogans like, “It’s not a delusion, you’re incredible.” and “Define normal.”

So I loved talking to Michelle about what schizophrenia actually looks and feels like, why getting her correct diagnosis was the best thing that ever happened to her, and how we can keep breaking down the stigma around mental illness.
