📍 Hi, welcome to chasing energy. This is your very nasally and congested host Daniel Lucas coming off a post COVID. Uh, still have not gotten a hundred percent of my smell and taste back yet. And I miss it. Dearly. Talk about an interesting way to start your new year. Under the weather. Uh, was it hit me before Christmas.

And, uh, I believe it was like either the most recent thing or, or the original, cause it hit me full blown. I've never not been hit with something like this before. But, you know, Hey, that's the percipient healthy. Right. We get to push through stuff like this. So. I today, I'm going to talk to you. I had a lot of time to think in the last few weeks about, um, what I wanted to change in the coming year. And while I'm not big on new year's resolutions, I do think it's good to reflect and talk about what is or isn't working for you, which is kind of what I want to do today.

I want to talk to you about how to align your 2023. And some tools I've borrowed some tools from a world. Experts and things like that. So I didn't make up all these tools, but I did kind of come up with a very simplified version. From Jeff Bezos, I borrowed a regret index, which is where he looked at, what would he regret the most? And so I kind of want to tie that into.

What I want to do for you today now, before we start. I need to make sure that I ask you to subscribe. And leave a review. It matters immensely and it's starting to matter more and more and more because. Part of how I gauge, whether this message is being heard is the number of downloads or listens.

And. I've got certain goals for myself. And I don't want to, I don't want to drag this out, but I will. I would love it so much. If you made that part of your new year's resolution right now. So without further ado.

We're going to go through a quick exercise today. And I mean, this is like super quick, so don't worry. You don't need a pad and pen if you're driving because I've kept it. So high level that really, what I want to do is plant the seed of thought with you. And what I really want for you, dear listener.

Is for 2023 to be the year that you say. You know what I gave this some thought and I made some changes now. I'm not attaching a goal to your success here. Uh, this is not a new year's resolution, but it is something where I think I can help you. Look at what's working for you. And start. That's the word I'm looking for here. Start looking for where to put emphasis in efforts in the coming year.

And by contrast. Where to remove efforts from. So with that being said, I want you to think about your top three regrets. From 2022. And by regrets, it means outcomes that did not align with who you believe you are in your, in terms of your core value. There was an outcome where you look at it and say, this is that that outcome does not reflect who I was.

So there are times where things go bad, but it's circumstantial. That's not what I'm talking about here. I'm talking about things where you feel like you had impact or direction, and you feel like you kind of dropped the ball.

No pun intended. For the new year. So. That's not the official definition of regrets, by the way. That's the official, that's the reason that chase, this is the official chasing energy reason. Uh, for. Or out definition for regrets. So outcomes that you. Uh, do not believe aligned with your character.

For the past year. Now, maybe that was, you looked at your career and you said, you know, there were definitely some things where I feel like I slacked off after the second quarter. Very common thing. Uh, I feel like with my health. You know, I came out in January and February strong and then I sorta dropped it off.

So, what I'd like to do is give you three basic examples that I'm personally looking at, and I'm not going to get into the details of my goals on this one. I believe in having granular goals. But for the purposes of this exercise, what I really want to do is get you thinking about what do you want to change for 2023.

So. Here are some examples. I picked three categories to share with you today. One was health, one was career. And what was relationships? And those are very high level. And I think that's where you should start. And before you get into actually. Let's start with this. Let's start with health.

Mobility is something that I have sort of put on the back burner. I had some aching injuries in 2022. I've been vocal about the fact that 2022 was not a good year for me. Uh, in terms of athletic performances. And I used the year to really rehab. And there's still some injuries that I've been unable to rehab. And so I'm trying to come up with clever new ways.

To sort of rehab those injuries. And as a consequence of that, I am going to focus more on mobility this year. So I decided today as I was preparing the notes for this podcast, I said, why don't I practice what I preach? I dropped what I was doing at four o'clock in the evening tonight. I pulled out my phone and I looked up a Pilates reform.

Uh, class. Uh, which has the, you know, the really posh machines there. Or at least the ones that I saw were extremely nice. I drove to the, to the studio, jumped into the class and bought five more. What I will say about that PilotFish reform class. And I probably should do a podcast on this. Uh, It made me ache in spots that normally I would never ache.

Uh, just very odd connector, muscles, stability, muscles. There was one particular part where I was doing some type of plank, but your feet are on a very shaky thing. And my back was so tight while I was doing it. And I was like, that's so interesting because I would not think my back would ache at all in a plank. I do planks all the time, but as soon as it was unstable, my back started seizing up on me. So I thought it was.

Interesting. That, uh, and humbling. And I look at this and say, this is just proof that I needed to really put some effort into this. So that is a quick example of health. I said, I really want to work on mobility this year. I had started, uh, doing 20 minutes of yoga in the mornings, which I probably will continue to do. I find that it, I just, I feel, uh, my body is breathing better.

The rest of the day. If I just do that 20 minutes, it's not particularly ARD. It's a course that I'm doing through one Durham. I'd be happy to share notes on that. If anybody wants to reach out. The website, by the way, is chasing energy. There's a newsletter. You can email me. You can also message me through social media. If you like.

The next thing was career. I'll keep this very brief. Uh, I attended one industry conference this year, a lot of companies are coming out post COVID now and saying, okay, we're going to have these conferences. I don't particularly care for these virtual conferences. I'm sorry. Uh, as far as, as far as like when they're related to work anyway,

When it's like a three-day conference. I don't want to do that to video. So I tend to one in Texas, I found it to be a very enlightening experience to get out of my element and be around a bunch of strangers and have to network. And the second part of that is. Uh, I dabble in real estate. And I've come up with some goals that I want to put together. My own syndication deal. I have been part of syndication deals for many years.

But I've never actually put my neck on the line and said, I'm going to lead this and be the person who finds it and puts it together. So that's a goal for this year. I want to put together one syndication deal. And then with relationships, I really want to start to develop some new friendships in my area. I have some good friends that don't live close to me. And what I find is, especially now that, um,

I've been single for awhile. Uh, relationships are a huge part of how I find fulfillment. And I don't necessarily mean with your partner, but friendships, family. Family thing. I spend plenty of time with family. I'm good there. But, uh, I want to do start developing friendships again because having a group of peers that you really respect, and it makes a big difference in the book, strength to strength by Arthur Clark, which I highly recommend it came out last year. Uh, he writes a column for the Atlantic every week.

Please follow that guy on Instagram. His content is amazing.

He talks about the role that relationships play with our happiness. And in one specific example. He talks about the difference between deal friends and real friends. And I'll be honest in as someone who's a networker in, in two or three different industries. A lot of my friends are deal friends. They, they, it's not that they're rude. It sounds like they're mean. And the best example I can think of is your dentist.

If you see your dentist and maybe you guys have met in public a few times and you think. Yeah, he's a nice guy. We chit chat.

Here's my question for you. If he's not your dentist or she's not your dentist. Are you going to make time to spend time with that person? Well, then that's probably a deal frame. That's not necessarily someone who's going to come over for dinner on a Friday or something like that. So nothing wrong with heaven, deal friends. They're wonderful. Part of what makes the world go round. And I just mentioned that I want to go to more networking things. Those are deal friends as well.

But I also want to focus on developing true. Long lasting friendships. I've. Because I'm not in the running community as much anymore. I lost kind of lost out on a lot of those advantages. So those were my three things. And then with each one of, whenever you go through this list, here's, here's what I want to end this podcast with a question for you.

And that is why is it imperative that I pursue this now?

Now. I used the word pursue. Because I don't want you to tie your happiness with the outcome here. I'm a stoic person and you know, what you should tie yourself to is the effort that you're making.

Uh, we all know there's times where you get a free home run and there's times where you strike out, even though you were doing your best. Uh, in this particular case, what I want you to think about is what are you choosing to pursue? What do you want more of and less of it now let's go back again. You started at the top, you based this on what were your top three regrets from last year that you feel like you missed the mark?

So, instead of saying, I'm going to be like a CEO by December or something like that. What I really want you to do for my exercise is just focus on what do you go correct the most from last year. And then breaking that into three categories and saying I would like to mitigate my regrets. And I think by doing this, that we'll do that. This is less about.

You know, shooting for the stars and more about getting your life in alignment. So the second part of that statement, I'm going to repeat this statement again. Why is it imperative that I pursued this now, now is the other part of the statement. So the first part was pursue. Remember, we're not tying the goal to that. The second part is now, right?

If this isn't something you need to get done this year. Then I don't think for the purposes of this exercise, it should be in your top three. So you might say something like. Well, I want to learn to have always wanted to learn how to play piano. Well, You better figure out why it's important to do it this year.

Otherwise, I don't think you'll stick with it. It needs to be relevant to what you intend to accomplish this year. It shouldn't just be like, oh, this is my bucket list. And I picked something off of my bucket list. Always wanted a pair of shoes, whatever. And by the way, just so you don't think I'm picking on musicians or learning in this Drummond.

I've actually, uh, got, been playing a lot more music the last six months. And I have found that it gives me that artistic outlet in the evenings. I don't particularly like, or try to play much in the mornings or anything like that. But in the evenings, I find it to be a great way to unlock and sort of exercise that part of your brain. That that is the opposite.

Of your analytical side that you use maybe at the workplace in the morning, if your knowledge worker.

Uh, think about strength training. Okay. When you're strength training. You push. And you pull, those are called push pull exercises. The older I've gotten, the more I realize you, you need to schedule those push pull exercises in a way that compliment each other. So for example, a very simple example would be if you're bench pressing, pulling would be doing your back like a row.

Okay. That's a classic push poll. If you're curling with your biceps, a tricep extension would be pull, right? If you're squatting a hamstring. Curl would be a push pull. What you're doing there is you're basically by putting effort in both directions. You allow. The muscle doesn't just pull in one direction. It gets super tight.

And I actually have found that I'm happiest when I push, pull in the same workout. So whatever muscle I'm working, I tend to do a push pull for that group. And what I found was I was less sore and less tight. Uh, let's say that you did a push on Monday and you did a pool. On Wednesday, will you miss your Wednesday workout? And you wonder why on Friday, your.

You know, you're kind of tight. Tighter or you're starting to notice you're uncomfortable. Well, that's part of it. So with, with these type of goals, I want you to think about. Push and pull. Okay. What do you want more of, what do you want less of. And kind of narrowing down on that. And again, with, with the music example, I find that what, it's a push pull.

In the sense that my artistic side, which usually starts kicking in about six 30 or so in the evening. My artistic side wants to basically just sort of listen to, you know, create music or read or discuss things or watch a movie. Uh, my analytical side doesn't want to be distracted in the early  📍 hours once you just produce, produce produce. So that's, that's just an example of pushing pool.

I would love to hear your goals if you'd like to share them in like a little bit of accountability. Again, the website is chasing God energy. Please subscribe to the podcast. I cannot wait to bring you more content this year. I'm excited about it and excited about all the things that you are going to accomplish. And I hope to be a part of that journey. We have some great interviews coming up for you.

Stay tuned.
