Episode #37 with Dr. Veena Naganathar

 "It's not just a scientific problem, it's also that there are huge socio-economic factors that play into the reason that trauma happens."

On today's episode I chat with Veena Naganathar about her career as a medical practitioner, how her parents and being born during the civil war in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, shaped career path, and why she is passionate about the field of trauma sciences.  We talk doctoral thesis, how certain medical terms and English pronunciations can be a tongue twister, being Tamil, family trees, and her love for Superstar Rajinikanth.  We also discuss going up against the status quo,  and why she decided to play a particular song  at her bridal entrance during her Hindu wedding ceremony.  We talk about music playlists, supperclubs, people within the medical profession that she respects and admires,  and of course, we chat about a particular saying that she loves to use. 

Veena Naganathar is a Tamil anaesthetic doctor, born in Sri Lanka and then moved to England, where she did her schooling. Inspired by her parents, she went into medicine. Following medical school she completed her PhD in trauma sciences looking at the effect of serious injuries on the heart. Outside medicine her interests span from entertaining, food  and music. She ran a supperclub with her sister Suhanya and broadcaster Ashanti Omkar and currently runs music nights with her husband.
