Manifestation, Nervous System Safety, and the Law of Attraction: What Actually Creates Change
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
We take a balanced look at the law of attraction, separating what actually helps from what creates shame and confusion when life gets hard. We connect mindset to action and nervous system safety so manifesting becomes less about control and more about alignment and capacity.
• law of attraction basics and why focus shapes perception
• why “thought alone creates reality” can become harmful
• allowing complexity, free will, biology, and circumstance
• nervous system safety as the hidden driver of money blocks, visibility fears, and relationship avoidance
• why affirmations fail when deeper beliefs stay unhealed
• building congruence between beliefs, emotions, regulation, and behavior
• action as part of manifestation and why waiting for signs stalls progress
• gratitude as resilience without denying pain
• redefining manifestation as becoming someone who shows up fully
Welcome And The Big Question
SPEAKER_00Hello, it's Dr. Donna and welcome to another episode of my podcast, Soul Talk and Psychic Advice. Today we're gonna talk about one of the most popular and controversial spiritual topics of the last several decades. It's still confusing to some people. It definitely took me a few years to really grasp it, and that is the law of attraction. And the law of attraction is kind of different from manifesting. People think, ooh, manifest, manifest, but most people have heard some version of the law of attraction. You attract what you think, but or you create your reality, but or your vibration determines your experiences. Like attracts like. For some people these ideals have been very empowering. But for others, they are confusing, disappointing, or even harmful. Because eventually people may ask the question, if the laws of attraction is true, why am I struggling? And people do ask these questions all the time because they're they're like, Well, I'm thinking it, I'm thinking, you know, I'm tr I'm doing and I'm not seeing the outcome. You know, people do affirmations, they wonder why the affirmations aren't working. Why do good people experience tragedy? Why do some people seem to attract abundance effortlessly while others work incredibly hard and still struggle? And you know, people have this why is a bad guy getting away with everything? Because the universe, yes, we will get karma if we do harmful things, we also get karma if we do good things. But the law of attraction is different from that. So these are important questions. And today I want to explore the law of attraction in a balanced way, not from blind belief, not from complete dismissal, but from a place of curiosity, discernment, and grounded spirituality. Because I believe that there is wisdom within these teachings, but I also believe that there are misunderstandings that can create unnecessary suffering. So let's explore both.
What Law Of Attraction Means
SPEAKER_00What is the law of attraction? At its core, the law of attraction suggests that our thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and energy influence the experiences we attract into our life. The basic ideal simple. What we consciously focus on tends to grow. Where attention goes, energy flows. People often use the law of attraction to create financial abundance, relationships, business success, health improvements, spiritual growth, opportunities, confidence, personal goals. Many teachings encourage practices such as visualizing, affirmation, gratitude, future self-work, vision boards, meditation, and positive focus. And I talk a lot about gratitude when it comes to manifesting and co-creating. It's definitely important. And there's this truth within many of these practices. This is true. You know, our thoughts do influence behavior, our beliefs direct affect directly affect decisions. Our expectations shape perception. And what we repeatedly focus on often affects what we notice and pursue. But the conversation becomes more complicated when people assume that thought alone creates reality. And the problem is that a lot of people, if they don't have luck with the law of attraction, they don't want to hear any updates or anything new. They see it as a gimmick or a grift by the person teaching it. But really, you have to spend time, you know, understanding it. You know, all these topics evolve. Spirituality evolves just like science, just like any other, you know, field. And so we learn more, right? So remember that. And you will likely behave differently than someone who believes growth is possible. A lot of times when people have a hard time, and I want to caution, not always, but a lot of times, and I've seen it, I've seen it with myself, I've seen it with other people. It's because they're not believing, you know, they kind of believe for a moment, well, that didn't work. I don't it's baloney, it's VS. And law of attraction is not overnight success, but sadly a lot of people want something quick, fast, in a hurry. And I've talked about divine timing in another podcast. So, you know, remember your beliefs influence your actions. Your actions influence your results. Always tell people you can want a college degree, but you're gonna have to apply, take the classes, pass them, you know, meet the education requirements, and then you get the degree. So nobody can tell you all you're gonna be successful unless you do the work. Even if you get a reading saying that, it's showing your potential if you do the work. So know that your actions influence your results. Second, attention matters. When you focus on opportunities, you tend to notice opportunities. When you focus on possibilities, you tend to see possibilities. This doesn't mean opportunities magically appear, it means your awareness changes. Third, expectation matters. Research in psychology has repeatedly shown that expectations influence behavior. People who believe improvement is possible often persist longer. They take more action, they recover more quickly from setbacks, they remain open to solutions. These are powerful effects. So yes, mindset matters, focus matters, belief matters, but that is only part of the picture. And that is something to remember.
When The Teaching Goes Wrong
SPEAKER_00So let's talk about what many law of attraction teachings are getting wrong. You know, this is this is what I've learned from listening to a lot of lot of them and and who was able to teach it, you know, thoroughly to me. And cause, you know, I had to pay for some trainings to understand it. Because of course nobody's gonna give everything away for free. People do this for a living. So I paid for some trainings. This is where we need discernment. Some versions of the law of attraction suggest that every experience is created by your thoughts. This can become problematic because life is more complex than that. People experience loss, illness, trauma, natural disasters, and economic hardship, relationship challenges, and many circumstances beyond their direct control. You know, now there's some talk about where autoimmune illnesses come from. They come from stressful events or not being able to use your voice. There's books or studies out there, you know, on it. And but you know, a lot of things sometimes are just beyond our control. Sometimes people are going through the through a good time in their life and then they get sick. It's like, what the heck? So when someone is told you attracted that, which is rude, people still say this stuff, it can create shame, blame, and unnecessary guilt. Sometimes terrible things happen, not because someone manifested them. I didn't manifest my son dying, not because they thought negatively, not because they failed spiritually. That's another thing. People really think if they're ultra-spiritual, even in this day and age, that they will just live an unbothered life with no problems, problem free. And I know we get stressed out over problems. Who wants problems? But they come with the human body, with the human experience. It's part of our process to work through problems. But because life contains uncertainty, free will exist, and we are given free will. That's why when people go, Well, how come God let this happen or let that happen? It's not God letting it, it's us with our free will. It's you know, bad people in the world with free will. You know, when I do readings, I tell people, you have free will. You can go this route or you could choose another one. You're in control of your life. I don't take away people's autonomy. Other people make choices. Society influences outcomes, yes. You know, a lot of our plans got stopped when COVID happened. Biology influences outcomes. Circumstances influence outcomes. Healthy spirituality leaves room for complexity. Not everything is your fault, not everything is your responsibility. And some people really take this stuff on, and not everything is a reflection of your vibration. Keep that in mind.
Nervous System And Safety Blocks
SPEAKER_00So let's talk about the nervous system and manifestation. This is where I believe many manifestation conversations become much more useful. The nervous system. Many people say, I want more money, but their nervous system says that that feels unsafe. And people don't want to admit that. They just go, Oh, value money, you know, my problems will go away. But somewhere underneath all that, do you feel like you're worthy of it? Do you feel like you deserve it? Did you grow up poor and it was hard to get money? There's some stuff beneath the surface, and so that's important to remember. I took a course on releasing money blocks, and I took additional course on resetting your nervous system through breath work. I took trainings and I learned how to see what I needed because I had a lot of money blocks. I've been through bankruptcies, I've been dirt poor, you know, used to having money and it's slipping through my hands. And so, you you know, there's always deeper stuff going on. And people say they want visibility, but the nervous system says, What if people criticize me? So a lot of people say they want visibility, but they don't want the craziness that comes with it. You know, the trolls online, you know, the jealous people, the haters, the naysayers, and that all is part of visibility. People say I want a loving relationship. The nervous system says, What if I get hurt again? And a lot of people, I've heard it throughout the years, I want love, but I don't want to get hurt. Sometimes getting hurt is part of the process. Sadly, not getting the views, getting tortured, but getting hurt. And and getting hurt is subjective. What hurts one person doesn't hurt another, or you know, people just want to get it right. But life isn't about getting it right every time. And if you don't get it right, it doesn't mean that you're failing, are you messed up, or you're dumb, or none of that stuff. It's just part of life and learning. The conscious mind desires expansion. And you know, this creates an internal conflict for people when they don't know what's going on beneath the surface. So, you know, your conscious mind desires expansion, but the nervous system prioritizes safety. And the nervous system will almost always choose safety over growth, at least until it learns that growth can be safe. That's important. And this is why some people visualize success for years but continue repeating the same patterns because they just don't understand. The issue is not necessarily belief, the issue may be capacity. Can your system hold what you say you want? Can you receive it? Can you sustain it? Can you remain regulated when it arrives? Is it going to change you in a way that you're not ready to change? And this is often the deeper work. And so a lot of times you hear now they're talking about more you gotta feel it, you know, in order to manifest it, and you gotta regulate your nervous system in order to feel it. That's part of the process, and it's necessary.
Why Affirmations Stall Out
SPEAKER_00So let's talk about why positive thinking alone doesn't work, and people still try to do this. Many people become frustrated because they spend years repeating affirmations. I am abundant, I am successful. Money flows easily to me. I attract perfect relationships. But underneath those statements may be powerful contradictory beliefs. I am not enough. Sometimes that's beneath the surface. I don't deserve success. Yeah, people will leave me. You know, if you got childhood trauma or unresolved issues, this is why therapy or coaching or healing is all necessary to help you with these things. Money causes problems. Yeah, money brings out the haters, being visible is dangerous. If those deeper beliefs remain unaddressed, affirmations alone may feel ineffective. This doesn't mean affirmations are useless. It means they work best when combined with healing, awareness, and aligned action. The goal is enforcing positivity. That isn't the goal. The goal is increasing congruence. Yes, you gotta be in alignment. Everything's gotta line up. Helping your beliefs, emotions, nervous system, and actions move in the same direction. This is all part of the process. And this is sometimes what people miss, right? That this all goes together.
Action As The Missing Ingredient
SPEAKER_00Action is part of attraction. One of the most overlooked aspects of manifestation is action. Many people become stuck waiting. And this is where the problem comes in, and a lot of people they just want to wait. They're like, Well, I'm a good person, I deserve it. Law of attraction doesn't care if you're good, bad, evil, mean. That's karma. That's a whole separate conversation. Law of attraction is you believe what you will receive. You feel it, you will receive it. You know, that's part of law of attraction. It doesn't go, well, I'm a good person. That's karma. That's different. That's why you see people who you think are awful winning because they feel like they deserve to win. You know, um that's why. And so a lot of times people become stuck waiting, waiting for a sign. People want signs all the time, if they're on the right track. Sometimes you just gotta jump in. You know, waiting for certainty, waiting for perfect alignment, waiting for the universe to deliver. Meanwhile, opportunities often require participation. The author still writes the book, the coach still serves clients, the entrepreneur still creates offers, the podcaster still records episodes, the speaker still speaks, the student still applies for college, graduates. The universe may open doors, but we often have to walk through them. Action is not separate from manifestation. Action is frequently part of manifestation. Remember that. Gratitude and receiving.
Gratitude Without Denial
SPEAKER_00One of the healthiest aspects of the law of attraction teachings is gratitude. Not because gratitude magically forces the universe to respond, but because gratitude changes our relationship with life. It really does. Gratitude shifts attention toward what is present, what is working, what is already available. This often creates more peace, more perspective, more resilience. At the same time, gratitude should not become denial. You can be grateful and still desire more. You can appreciate today while working toward tomorrow. The realities can coexist. You know, and if you've gone through something tough, you you may not find peace with that, but be grateful that you survived it. You know, a lot of times we go through awful things that don't make sense and why this happened, but just be so proud of yourself for surviving it. And start with that gratitude. I was debating if I was gonna share this. I share my personal experiences or experiences that I've had through coaching just to help people understand that you know I'm not just talking. And you know, when my son passed, I was extremely angry. I mean, angry, angry, mad, it was unfair, you know, he was so important in my life. And I thought, how am I gonna overcome some of this? And what I had to do is I had to say, I'm grateful for the time that I had with him, but I'm grateful that he died in a hospital and you know, he wasn't missing and you know hurt or dismembered or something. He died in the hospital, in a good hospital around doctors who cared and family who cared, and you know, I had to find all sorts of twisted ways to be grateful so that I can cope. You know, I and it that was one of the things that I did, and that's maybe weird or hard to do for some people, but I had to do it because if I didn't I was gonna be cussing people out and screaming at people and being violent and angry and full of rage, and I didn't want that, you know. So I locked myself in the house until I could figure out something. So that's what I had to do. So sometimes, yes, we have to do crazy things to find some gratitude, and that's what I did, you know, and that helped in so many ways. It it actually brought me sanity because people weren't understanding and they didn't want to understand, and they were scared, well, if that could happen to her, it could happen to me, and I don't want to lose my kid. So that was my coping mechanism. So sometimes you have to find gratitude in the most twisted ways. So let's continue.
A Grounded Way To Manifest
SPEAKER_00A more grounded way to think about manifesting. Perhaps a healthier question isn't how do I attract everything I want? It's perhaps the question is how do I become someone capable of participating fully in my life? You've got to show up for your life. That's how you get what you want. That shift changes everything. Instead of controlling outcomes, we focus on growth. Instead of forcing reality, we build capacity. Instead of obsessing over results, we develop skills. Instead of chasing certainty, we cultivate trust. The focus becomes what kind of person am I becoming? How am I growing? How am I learning? How am I showing up? These questions often create far more transformation than endless manifestation techniques. That's so important. Showing up, becoming the person you want to be, and and just really deciding to be proactive. Like if you want to be more social, join groups, join, you know, meetup groups, join something, right? Join a knitting club, a sewing club, whatever. A sports, you know, local sports team, you know, where people get together and play or play tennis, or you know, or that scary pickleball to me. That's scary. It seems like people get hurt in that. But you know, you have to take action if you want to partner, you can't just sit at home. GPS doesn't deliver partners. You may have to go online, you may have to go to a speed dating, you may have to join a class, you may have to get out more if you want to attract someone. And that's what it means. You gotta show up. If you want the wealth, you gotta take steps and show that you're gonna handle extra money. A lot of times people see money as a rescue, but if you don't know how to handle money, it won't be a rescue, it'll become even a bigger disaster. So I'm gonna close this out.
Closing Thoughts On Alignment
SPEAKER_00As we close today, I want to leave you with this thought. The law of attraction may not be simple as think positive and everything appears. Life is more complex, more mysterious, and more nuanced than that. But your thoughts matter, your focus matters, your belief matters, your actions matter, your nervous system matters. Your willingness to receive matters. The goal is not perfect positivity. The goal is alignment. We all have doubts and negative thoughts sometimes. Alignment between what you desire, what you believe, how you feel, and how you show up. And perhaps the deepest manifestation is creating a perfect life. Perhaps it's becoming more present, more grounded, more resilient, and more authentic along the way. So I want to thank you for listening today. And remember, you do not have to control every outcome to create a meaningful change. Sometimes the greatest manifestation is becoming the version of yourself that can meet life with openness, courage, and trust. And you know, I think I'm gonna do an episode all about how to get into the feeling because you gotta really feel it and visualize it when it comes to manifesting. I've discussed manifesting, but I think I'm gonna do a single topic on that soon. But I want to thank you for listening. Have a great day, and I see you in the next episode.
