The changed intestinal microbiome.
There is a pandemic of the ‘‘wrong” intestinal microbiome, the cause of which is unknown. The current treatments, probiotics and fecal transplant, are intended to provide the ‘‘missing”  bacterial species but they are only partially successful. Observations regarding the negative effects of abnormal intestinal flora go far beyond the bowel symptomatology of IBS. There are reports linking the ‘‘wrong” intestinal flora to hypertension, heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, colon cancer, and autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis, asthma, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid  arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis, all diseases that also have reported links to sleep disorders.  The changed intestinal microbiome has become epidemic in parallel with the epidemic of vitamin (hormone)  D deficiency, suggesting that they might be linked.
