The Moment Before The Moment
SPEAKER_00Let me ask you something. Have you ever pulled up outside your house after a long day and just sat there? Because you knew the version of you inside the car isn't the version your family deserve walking through the door. Or maybe it's before a big meeting. You're physically there but mentally scattered. Or at the gym, where your body shows up but your mindset doesn't. Here's the truth most people miss. Performance doesn't start when you enter the moment, it starts seconds before the moment. And today I'm going to give you a tool that takes less than two minutes but can completely change how you show up in every area of your life.
Stress Biology And Why You React
SPEAKER_00In today's episode, I'm going to give you a tool that you can implement in two minutes but will completely change how you show up. Your mental state is not just in your head. It's biological, it's measurable, and it directly impacts your performance. When you feel stressed, overwhelmed or disengaged, your brain's threat system, the amygdala, activates. Stress hormones like cortisol rise. Your decision making centre, prefrontal cortex, become less effective. That means you're less patient, you're less focused, you're less present, and you are more reactive. This isn't a weakness. It's wiring. But here's the good news. You can interrupt that process and you can reset your state in minutes. In fact, in two minutes. Research shows that deliberate mental reset techniques can quickly shift you from stress to control by re-engaging the rational part of your brain. So the question is not feel off sometimes. Because you will. The real question is, do I have a system to reset myself when this happens? That's where the two minute rule comes in. It's simple, it's practical, and it's backed by science. In under two minutes you can intentionally shift how you think, how you feel,
The Two Minute Rule Steps
SPEAKER_00and how you show up. Let me walk you through it step by step. The first step is to ask the right question. As you transition into a moment, ask what would the best version of me look, act and feel like right now. This is incredibly powerful because instead of reacting emotionally, you're choosing intentionally. This taps into what psychologists call cognitive reappraisal, a proven technique that improves emotional control and decision making. You stop asking how do I feel and start ask asking who do I choose to be? Step two visualize it clearly. Now picture that version of you, not vaguely, specifically. How do you stand? How do you walk? What's your energy like? Because here's where it gets interesting. Studies show when you vividly imagine an action, your brain activates many of the same neural pathways as if you were actually doing the action. In fact, people who mentally rehearsed piano sequences showed similar brain changes to those who physically practiced, and in performance settings, mental rehearsal has been shown to improve outcomes significantly with some sort of studies suggesting gains of twenty percent. So when you visualize success, you're not just imagining it, you're training your brain for it. Step three Act as if now ask, what would this version of me do? And mentally rehearse the behavior. How do you greet people? What do you speak? How do you listen? Because behavior isn't just an outcome of emotion, it also creates emotion. When you act confidently you begin to feel confident. This is known as embodied cognition. Your body influences your brain just as much as your brain influences your body. Step four feel it fully. This is where most people fall short. You don't just think it, you feel it. Confidence, energy, focus, calm. Because with multisensory mental imagery, when you add emotion and sensation, it activates broader brain networks and strengthens learning and performance. Really an important nuance. It's not just about fantasizing success. Research shows that pure positive fantasy without action can actually reduce motivation. So combine clear behavior, realistic scenarios and emotional engagement, and that's where the magic happens. Step five. Step into it. Now this is the key. You don't just think about it, you become it. You step into the role, like putting on a jacket, and you carry that into the moment. Because this is where everything connects. Your brain is primed, your body is aligned, your emotions are regulated, and now you execute. People often ask, can something so simple really work? Yes, and here's why. You're activating three systems at once. Neural priming, your brain rehearses the behavior. Emotional regulation, you shift your internal state. Behavioral alignment, you act in accordance with your identity. This creates a rapid top-down and bottom up reset. And that's why it works in minutes,
Breathwork And Better Visualisation
SPEAKER_00not hours. If you want to enhance this technique even further, you could add one or all of the following. Firstly, breath work. You could look at one of the breathing techniques. Longtime listeners will know I'm a big fan of the 7-Eleven breathing technique, which is breathing in through your nose for the count of seven, out through your mouth with pursed lips for the count of eleven. Or you could try triangle breathing which is all through the nose. So you breathe in through your nose for the count of five. You would then hold for a count of five and then breathe out through your nose again for a count of five. And that's that circular, triangular breathing pattern. Slow breathing helps to activate your body's calming system and reduces stress quickly. Even breathed breathing exercises have been shown to reduce anxiety and improve mood and minutes. You can further improve the technique by including short mental rehearsals which have been shown to be more effective when repeated consistently. You compare visualization with actual behavior or action. It has been shown that visualization works best when combined with real world behavior instead of it.
Your Two Minute Challenge
SPEAKER_00So here is your challenge for today. Before your next key moment, your next meeting, your next conversation, or even before you walk through the front door at the end of the day, take two minutes. Ask the question, see the version, feel it, and step into it. Because the truth is, the best version of you isn't something you become one day, it's something you can choose moment by moment.
