Sheri Davidson:

Hello wellness friends welcome back to the wellness inspired podcast, a place where you can find inspiration, motivation and empowerment in the pursuit of a wellness lifestyle. I'm your host, Sheri Davidson. I'm a wellness coach and acupuncturist in Houston, Texas and I am deeply passionate about health and well being. And as always, I'm here with my co host, Ben. And if you're new to the podcast, Finn is my terrier mix, rescue dog, trail runner, and loyal companion. He is also a therapy dog and greeter at element five, acupuncture and wellness. And today I have a fascinating topic to delve into. We're going to talk about the shin the spirit of Chinese medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. The Shin plays a crucial role in understanding and cultivating our overall well being. So join me as we explore the depths of the shin and its significance in our lives. But before we get started, I want to mention I am planning a European wellness riverboat cruise in 2024. My friend Tammy Haruka is a Travel Concierge and a friend. She's been on the podcast we talked about wellness travel, and I believe it was episode nine if you want to go back and take a listen, episode nine. But anyways, she is helping me plan this adventure. I have yet to commit to her but I'm thinking of a seven night cruise on the Danube river. We would cruise through Austria, Germany, Hungary and Slovakia. There will be active sightseeing, so hiking, biking, maybe I can get some running in there that's not on their itinerary currently, but maybe I can do something I'm not sure. But there will also be yoga, wellness talks relaxing and local sourced cuisine. So stay tuned for more details. I already have many people interested and I have yet to do any marketing. So get ready to grab your spot. All right, are you ready? Let's talk about the shin the spirit of Chinese medicine and you. Mind Body and Spirit the trifecta of human health and TCM we call it the three treasures. So what exactly is the shin and TCM or traditional Chinese medicine? Chin is the concept of spirit or consciousness. It represents the intangible aspects of our being the emotions, cognition, and the essence of life itself. So you can think of Shen as the light that animates our existence, the inner flame that fuels our vitality. The Shin is considered to be one of the three treasures and TCM alongside chi. And Ching chi is the lifeforce that flows through our bodies, while Jing represents our fundamental essence. And then we have Shin it encompasses our mental and emotional well being since a self and connection to the world around us. I would like to share a quote with you from the Nanjing it's a classical medical text and traditional Chinese medicine. And it says, Heaven abides so that we have virtue, Earth abides. So we have chi. When virtue flows, and chi is blended. There is life. So poetic. I like it. Maintaining a healthy Shin is essential for overall health and well being. When our Shin is balanced. We experienced emotional stability, mental clarity, and a deep sense of peace. So you might be wondering, well, what does that look like? Imagine a person who radiates with a profound sense of peace and inner harmony. Their emotions are balanced. they exude a genuine sense of joy and contentment. Their mind is sharp and clear, able to focus and engage fully in the present moment. This individual possesses a deep connection to their inner self, expressing wisdom and compassion, and their interactions with others. Their vitality is vibrant, and they possess a zest for life, approaching challenges with resilience and an optimistic spirit. This person has a strong Shin it shines brightly illuminating their path and inspiring those around them to cultivate their own spiritual well being. Can you think of anybody like this in your life? By contrast, imagine a person who shouldn't is in a state of imbalanced or even disturbed, as we say in Chinese medicine. They may experience frequent bouts of anxiety, restlessness or excessive worry. Their emotions fluctuate rapidly, leading to mood swings and difficulty finding stability. Their mind may be clouded, struggling with confusion, or a lack of clarity. This individual may feel disconnected from their inner self, lacking a sense of purpose or direction in life. Their vitality is diminished, leading to fatigue and a lack of motivation. Overall, they're unbalanced Sion negatively impacts their well being and makes it challenging to find inner peace and contentment. Now, I want to note here, the quality of the shin is on the spectrum. On one end, you have a groundedness vitality and purpose. In the middle, you have an unbalanced and scattered Shin presenting more as anxiety, worry, insomnia. And at the other end of the spectrum, you have a disturbed option. Now this can manifest as a more severe mental health condition like bipolar, most acupuncture see the middle of the spectrum. We've all been there. And unfortunately, some people live there. But I have good news for you whether you visit or live in the middle, there are things that you can do to support your shin. First, I want to go into what TCM can offer you, and then I'll go into the lifestyle choices that you can make to support your said acupuncture and herbal medicine are commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat imbalances and nourish the shin promoting emotional well being and overall vitality. Here's how they can contribute to the restoration and harmonization of the shin. Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points along the body's Meridian pathways. By stimulating these points. Acupuncture helps regulate the flow of Qi or vital energy. It promotes the harmonious balance of yin and yang energies. This balance is crucial for the nourishment of the shin. acupuncture treatments can help calm the mind, reduce anxiety and restore emotional equilibrium, allowing the shin to thrive. So I thought it would be fun to give you a couple of points that are commonly used in acupuncture heart seven translates to Shin men. It is also known as the Spirit gate are gateway to the shin and it is a primary point for calming the mind, alleviating anxiety and promoting restful sleep. I'd also like to note here there is another shinmin on the body. And it is an auricular point often used to calm the mind alleviate anxiety and promote relaxation. I use them both in my clinic lot. We also use pericardium six, it's located on the forearm on the inner side, and its name is Nick one. And it translates to inner pass or inner gate and it's commonly used to harmonize the heart condition, helping with emotional imbalances, palpitations and insomnia. Another point that is commonly used is called Yin tongue. This is the point in between your eyes and it is the most photographed point in acupuncture. And it is also considered an important point for harmonizing the heart and calming the shin. It can help with emotional imbalances, reduce stress and promote tranquility. So those are just a couple points. There are many others but these are the most common. Okay, let's move on. Herbal medicine is another valuable tool we use in TCM. To nourish the shin, a practitioner will select herbs or formulas based on their specific energetic properties and ability to address the underlying imbalances affecting the shin. For example, in TCM, the Yin and blood are closely linked to the nourishment of the shin. The heart holds a special relationship with the shin and the classical texts say that the heart houses the shin and the spirit is rooted in the blood. So when the Yin and blood are deficient, it can lead to disturbances in the shin manifesting as anxiety, insomnia and cognitive difficulties. Here are some commonly used herbs to tonify yen and blood to support the shin. We might use Dong Wei Ming Dong, or we'll wait sir. There is also another category of herbs we use herbs that calm the mind and settle the spirit. These herbs are known for their calming and sedated properties. herbs like swans L Ron tongue, it is frequently used to calm the shin This herb has a mild sedative effect and is often used in herbal formulas to treat restlessness, insomnia, irritability and anxiety. There's also Yuan jure, this single herb is valued for its calming properties and the ability to settle the spirit and promote emotional stability. It is commonly used in formulas to alleviate symptoms associated with anxiety, depression and insomnia. There is long gloomily, these are fun because these are mineral substances so they're heavy and they're often used in TCM to help anchor and cognition. They are particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing excessive worrying, palpitations and insomnia due to an unsettled or agitated spirit. Then there's Bazza rent. This herb is also known for its calming and sedate of effects. It is commonly used to alleviate insomnia, restlessness and anxiety. And it is often included in formulas targeting the disturbance of the shin and the heart. Last but not least, there is Huff one P. This can soothe and harmonize the shin one p is known to have a gentle, uplifting effect on the spirit, and that can alleviate symptoms of depression, mood swings and emotional instability. Now these are just a few herbs used to calm the mind settle the spirit and promote a sense of tranquility. It's important to note that individualized diagnoses and prescriptions by qualified TCM practitioner are necessary to determine specific points, appropriate herbs and formulas based on an individual's unique constitution and pattern of disharmony. TCM treatments are personalized, aiming to address the root cause of Shin and balances, while considering the interconnectedness of the body, mind and spirit. Now, let's not forget about the importance of lifestyle choices, things that you can do to be proactive and nourishing your shin. You can do this by cultivating a mindful and balanced lifestyle through practices like meditation, Qigong, or tai chi, they can profoundly impact motion. These practices allow you to connect with your inner self, reduce stress and foster a greater sense of harmony. Now you don't have to pick one of these activities. There are plenty of options if this is not your jam, meditation, Tai Chi and Qigong are what TCM can offer you. But you have to pick activities that work best for you. So I'll give you some more ideas in a bit. But in addition to these practices, fostering healthy relationships, engaging in creative pursuits in nurturing a sense of purpose and joy in life, can all contribute to a vibrant shin. It's about nourishing the spirit and finding that sweet spot where you can truly thrive. It's incredible how traditional Chinese medicine recognizes the intricate relationship between our physical, mental and emotional aspects. Paying attention to your shin and embracing holistic practices can enhance your overall well being and lead to a more fulfilling life. The wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine reminds us that true health is not merely the absence of illness, but the harmonious integration of body, mind and spirit. And Shin as a spirit holds a key role in achieving that balance. What a beautiful perspective. Okay, we're going to wrap it up here. So here are some things that you can do to nourish your shin. One, practice mindful meditation or mindfulness, engage in regular mindfulness practices and meditation to cultivate and calm a peaceful state of mind. This helps reduce stress, quiet the mind and enhance the flow of Shen. Now I prefer mindfulness. I do like meditation, but I feel like mindfulness really brings me back to that present moment. And it's something that I can practice throughout my day. So I like to do more of an informal practice, but mindfulness I think is key. Number two, cultivate healthy relationships. Surround yourself with positive and supportive relationships. Nurturing healthy connections with loved ones can foster a sense of community and greatly contribute to the emotional well being and nourish your shin. Number three, engage in creative expression. Find ways to express your creativity. Whether it is through art, music, writing, or any form that resonates with you. engaging in creative pursuits can deeply fulfill and nourish the spirit. Number four, spend time in nature. Connect with the natural world by spending time in nature regularly, take walks in the park, go hiking or simply sit in a garden. Nature has a way of grounding us, offering a solace and replenishing our spirit. Number five practice self care and self compassion, prioritize self care and self compassion daily. Take time to engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Practice self compassion, by being kind to yourself and nurturing your needs. And remember, nourishing this chin is an ongoing process that requires attention and intention. Incorporating these practices into your lifestyle can help create a foundation for cultivating a balanced and harmonious spirit. Before we go, I want to leave you with a point and realms and seen where spirits thrives. Where consciousness and life collides. There lies a flame that burns within the shin the essence deep within you Emotions dance, like gentle breeze. Through Shen's domain, they find release, joy and sorrow, love and fear. In this ethereal realm they appear. When chin is bright, the spirit soars a vibrant light, it bravely pours clarity and peace, a study guide, and harmony the self resides. But when in balanced shadows creep, restless nights were troubled sleep, anxieties grip, a heavyweight, a clouded mind a troubled state. Yet hope is found an ancient lore weather healers tread on paths of your with needles fine, they gently mend the flow of chi, were Shin content, herbs as allies nature's embrace, nourish the spirit, restore its grace. Through mindful arts. The soul finds rest and meditations arms. It's truly blessed. Let us nurture our shins domain and stillness. Let our spirits reign. For in the depths of consciousness lies the essence of our wellness. So let's honor the sacred fire. Embrace the shin our hearts desire and balance found our spirits Free to live in harmony eternally. Thank you for joining me on this journey. today.
