Maddie:

Hey folks, welcome back to the Get with the growth Podcast. I'm Maddie.

Gabby:

And I'm Gabby.

Maddie:

And for this week's episode, we're gonna be talking about the different dimensions of wellness and how you can access them through the growth hubs.

Gabby:

So this is actually my last podcast episode, because I'm finishing my co op placement to morrow. And I just wanted to say that it's been such a great semester, and I've had such a blast recording all of these podcast episodes. And I hope you folks have enjoyed what we've talked about. But there's more fun on the way because Maddie will be here for the summer with a new youth ambassador recording new episodes. So stay tuned.

Maddie:

Yes, we'll miss having Gabby on our podcast. So thank you, Gabby, for everything you've contributed. It's been amazing. All right, so let's get into this week's episode. So we're going to be talking about the different dimensions of wellness. So there are eight dimensions of wellness, we have physical wellness, mental wellness, emotional, financial, environmental, spiritual, occupational, and intellectual wellness. And I know that that sounds like a lot, but it is true, there are so many different dimensions of wellness, and so many of these different dimensions interconnect with one another. So

Gabby:

yeah, so today, we're going to be talking a little bit about each one of these dimensions, what they kind of look like and also how you can access each of the of the dimensions through the growth. So starting off with physical, pretty self explanatory, but this includes behaviors that help you lead a healthy lifestyle. So this could be engaging in regular exercise, having proper nutrition, and healthy sleeping habits. So really anything you're doing to take care of your physical well being, yeah, then we've got emotional wellness. So this refers to your mental health and emotional well being. So some strategies for this area of wellness could be engaging in some breathing exercises, or reaching out to some supports for

Maddie:

mental health when needed. The next dimension is social. So this refers to our interactions with the community and people around us. And this can be accessed by joining clubs, volunteering, or balancing social and personal time, then we've got financial wellness, and financial wellness can look like setting goals and taking steps to achieve those goals, making smart financial choices or striving for a sense of security.

Gabby:

And then we've got occupational so occupational wellness is the ability to achieve a balance between work and leisure that fits your lifestyle.

Maddie:

Then we have intellectual wellness. So intellectual wellness recognizes creative abilities, and it helps us to expand our knowledge and skills.

Gabby:

And then we've got spiritual wellness, which is defined as expanding a sense of purpose and meaning in life through your own morals and ethics.

Maddie:

And then finally, mental wellness is kind of our overall emotional, physiological and social well being that affects how we think feel and how we act. So now that we kind of have a little definition of the eight dimensions, let's get into how you can access these different dimensions through using the growth hubs.

Gabby:

So the grove provides resources that aims to improve all these areas of wellness. So when you come to a hub, you could pick one of these dimensions of wellness to work on, for example, if you wanted to come and work on your occupational wellness, you could chat with our youth concurrent coordinator who could connect you to some resources in the community that would help you maybe find a job or help balance your work and school life. And you might even be accessing one of these dimensions of wellness at the grove. And maybe you don't even realize it, for example, maybe you're sitting down and doing a coloring page. In this activity, you're actually accessing the mental dimension of wellness because you're taking care of your overall emotional well being by grounding yourself in activity like coloring or like art. So it's kind of cool that you might not know that you're you're accessing one of these dimensions through something that you're doing at your time at the grove. Yeah,

Maddie:

I think let's let's provide some examples, starting with physical so this is a little bit different at the University of Guelph hub, because we don't have a lot of space compared to some of our other locations such as Fergus, which has like a basketball core and more space for like breaking a sweat naturally moving your body around. But physical wellness can also look like attending a cooking class or picking up a snack when you're hungry, this is part of your physical wellness. If it's something that makes your body physically feel good, then that's that can improve your physical wellness.

Gabby:

Yeah, something Maddie and I also always do is take like what we call a body break. So we'll go into our green room here, roll out the yoga mat and do some stretching, when we feel that, you know, we've been working for a long period of time, and we just need to give our bodies a rest. And that's something you could also do if you're working really hard. Or if you're feeling just overwhelmed taking a little body break moving your body, doing some stretching, or like Maddy said, like maybe picking up a snack to feel your body Food is fuel. So lots of different ways that you can access physical wellness.

Maddie:

Yeah. Then emotional wellness. So we have lots of different workshops related to mindfulness, we have our DBT groups that meet once a week that go over skills and ways to improve your well being. So yeah, we have lots of different ways that you can access emotional wellness, like Gabby said, you could be coloring, you could be doing a puzzle, you could be having a conversation with one of the Youth Ambassadors just about how your day is going. And these are all ways that you know you can, you can improve your emotional well being.

Gabby:

And then we've got social wellness. So this could look like hanging out with friends or staff or even becoming a volunteer here at the grove. So there's lots of opportunities to socialize with other youth in the space to socialize with staff, to talk with Youth Ambassadors. And it can really be about anything. And I find that a lot of youth that come to the hub are really just looking for a place where they can chat with somebody else. Maybe that's somebody else. That's their age, maybe that's mad your eye, maybe it's one of our clinical staff. But

Maddie:

yeah, I mean, I definitely think that social wellness is like a really big part of the growth hubs. Because you can come with your friends, or you you know, you make friends here, like, there are peers that you'll see on a regular basis if you come and just having somebody to around your age to kind of talk to and play games with, like people who are interested in the same things as you.

Gabby:

I definitely think that that's like one of the biggest aspects of Yeah, hubs, I think especially like, after COVID and like being cooped up for so long, and like not really having the opportunity to socialize and interact with peers, like that, obviously took a huge toll on a lot of people's mental health. So I think the Grove is a really great space to kind of get back into that, like being with groups of people and socializing with other people. After not being able to do that for so long.

Maddie:

Yeah. Then we have financial wellness. So at all of our hubs, we have resources that can help you with job searching. So if you connect with a youth concurrent coordinator, they can connect you with resources that can help you build up your resume. Look for locations that would fit a job specifically for you. And this can help bring a sense of security into your life, which will obviously help with mindfulness and bring some peace, and hopefully some happiness from getting some funds.

Gabby:

Even just like setting some financial goals is something that you can do at the hub. So if you find that you're kind of struggling to manage your money, you could kind of sit down with a one of our staff members and set some goals for how you want to kind of distribute your funds because it can be tough. Especially like if you're a student, and you know you're paying tuition, and you're paying rent, and you're getting groceries like that can all add up very quickly. So yeah, so setting some of those like financial goals and kind of taking the time to see like where you can put your money towards this something that you can do when you're at the hub.

Maddie:

And I think with that comes occupational wellness, that kind of goes hand in hand with the financial here at the Grove, like I mentioned, you can get help with resume building and just talking about what skills you can bring to the table for looking for jobs. Yeah, this one goes really hand in hand with financial.

Gabby:

And then we've got intellectual wellness so you could reach out to find a tutor with the grove. So that's a really big program that we have going on here. We have lots of youth who access tutoring on a weekly basis. And if you're really just looking to improve in a particular subject in school, we have lots of tutors available to provide that sort of service,

Maddie:

then we have spiritual wellness. So all of our growth hubs have safe spaces where individuals can tap into meditation, or spiritual practices that suit every individual. So we're very welcoming and supportive, that everyone deserves to have their own beliefs and values. So really just a very safe space for for you to come and believe what you believe and you'll be accepted. And I feel like that's really important in our society nowadays.

Gabby:

Yeah, for sure. So that brings us to the end of this episode, just to kind of recap about what we talked about today. So there's eight dimensions of wellness, we kind of went through some examples of how to access each of these dimensions while you're at the grove.

Maddie:

So I'd like to just say once again, a huge thank you to Gabby and Caden for being amazing teammates, and not teammates, but what is it group members, I should say, for working on this podcast. Kaden does a lot of work behind the scenes that doesn't get recognized as much as Gabby and I because we're the voices but so much of this podcast needs to be credited to Kayden. So thank you, Kate, and every day then we really appreciate you. And again, Gabby, thank you for everything. It's been a blast working with you this semester. I'm super excited to continue working on the podcast with Kayden and another youth ambassador semester. But until then, be kind to your mind and we'll see you

Gabby:

next time. Bye.
