Stance for Health
Would you like to know why we created the Stance for Health Community?
In this podcast Dr. Rodney and Karen share their "why."
Why do they get up each morning?
"We help those wanting to live a long healthy life - but don't know where to start - gain CLARITY, CONFIDENCE and CONTROL over their future health in order to get to do what only they can do."
CLARITY - There are so many conflicting stories around health. Our goal in Stance for Health is to make it simple to change your lifestyle and gain healthy habits that will transform your life.
CONFIDENCE - Once you know that the information is vetted and secure you can begin to take steps in the right direction. We celebrate each step with you and share our own struggles and failures as we got on board with what now seems easy.
CONTROL - You get to decide what you are going to eat and you are no longer driven by addictions to additives and sugar. Food starts to taste so delicious and you feel so much better you are not tempted to go back to your old ways.

[00:07] Dr. Rodney: Welcome to Stance for Health podcast with Dr. Rodney and Karen Wirth, where becoming healthy is not complicated.
[00:16] Control your health by focusing on six areas of life that we teach you so you finally have the energy you have to do what you want instead of being a victim of your age.
[00:27] I have over 20 years experience working as a chiropractor and Karen is an author, speaker, and longevity coach.
[00:34] We've seen how a tiny change in your habits today can open up your life to a powerful future. Start today and take your stance for health.
[00:50] Hi, this is Dr. Rodney Wirth,
[00:52] and welcome to Stance for Health podcast. I'm seated next to, as usual, my beloved wife and practice manager, Karen Joanne Sebastian. Hope Lady Worth.
[01:07] Karen: That's a long title.
[01:09] Dr. Rodney: I know. Yeah.
[01:12] Karen: Delighted to be here. It's always fun to talk to you guys.
[01:15] Dr. Rodney: So why I wanted to get with you today and speak with you is our “why.” You know, if someone said once, “If you don't have a why, it's really hard to get up in the morning.”
[01:28] And our get up in the morning is we just had a good night's sleep. And a good night's sleep starts with so many things.
[01:36] Karen: And we have just grown in the time that we have been together here in this wellness center. We've just evolved. We've grown.
[01:47] Dr. Rodney: And so it was pointed out to me just yesterday that we have a unique product here,
[01:54] and that unique product is bringing you curated information and useful information, something that you can use right now. And it's part of a community, and we have health partners here, and those health partners can be any age group.
[02:13] I mean, we've adjusted and worked with newborns, but then all the way up to Functional Medicine with someone that just happens to be a health partner in chiropractic. So that's dealing with physical, chemical, and emotional stress.
[02:30] So in a community, whether that's an online community and a podcast or on a Facebook group that you can be a part of too, if you want to do that. We certainly welcome you to that.
[02:43] We want to give you hope that this will work for you when you work it, whatever it is that you want to accomplish in health. The reasons why we get up in the morning,
[02:54] we just want to share a few of those with you today for how we deal with physical, chemical, and emotional stress as a. As a couple.
[03:03] Karen: Well, when we met it was so interesting because I did not realize that I was finding someone, a partner who was willing to eat the way that I had always wanted to eat and pursue health in the same way.
[03:24] And I think our biggest Wake up call for that was when Doc had a basal cell carcinoma on his left eyelid that had been slow growing, thank God, but finally decided to take care of it and spent pretty much a year with lots of supplements, but not changing lifestyle. And so we went to a conference with Dr. Murphy, and it was one that I got to attend that last day. On the way home, we talked about it and said, “Let's clean out our pantry.”
[04:03] Describe that experience.
[04:07] Dr. Rodney: Basically, I was armed with enough information to be dangerous of what we didn't.
[04:13] Karen: Want in the ingredients.
[04:15] Dr. Rodney: The minute you start reading labels, you realize if it has more in it than the food you're trying to eat, it's probably going to be toxic. We found all kinds of things that we threw in the trash and.
[04:28] And Karen, were there tears involved?
[04:31] Karen: Oh, yes. Because now you gotta realize I was raised as a missionaries’ kid in Central America, and you just never threw food away. But he kept saying, “No, we're throwing this away and we're going to apologize to the trash can.”
[04:45] So that's a joke that we have now about food.
[04:48] And from then on, we started shopping and reading the labels.
[04:54] And that is something that has been so significant because that was in January of 2020.
[05:04] Dr. Rodney: Yeah. We'd already been in practice here at Stance for a couple years.
[05:10] Karen: Right.
[05:11] Dr. Rodney: And so there's a couple words that are bouncing around inside me right now, and one of them is weird. It's weird. But when you can seem weird when you get a vision or when you get an epiphany, or when you become committed to that vision, to a lifestyle, when you have hope that that will.
[05:33] Karen: Work for you and that it will make a difference.
[05:36] Dr. Rodney: Yes. That's where I wasn't afraid to throw stuff away, because I'd heard it enough times that I was ready. I mean, I was ripe for the picking to change my lifestyle.
[05:48] I just knew that all that information had a ring to it. There was truth to it.
[05:53] Karen: I have always had one goal in mind, and that's to be true to whatever I believe. We can't be telling you things on these podcasts that we don't do ourselves. And so here's what has been the result. The result is this is not as hard as people think. And that has been revolutionary for me because most people, when you think about cooking most of your meals at home, of course, the shutdown helped us with that, really did, because there weren’t many places to eat out anyway.
[06:33] They were closed. And I just discovered fun, I discovered joy, I discovered creativity in the kitchen. But of course, I also am married to someone who cleans up after my creative messes in the kitchen.Thank you for that, honey.
[06:52] Dr. Rodney: Yes. So if that's not you and you're the creative type, or you're the cleaner type and you don't have somebody that's. That's fearless like Karen,
[07:04] then you maybe you have to adopt a fearless attitude or a willingness to clean or. Or maybe that's you and you have to be both. A little bit. A little bit.
[07:15] Almost like being a single parent in a way.
[07:19] Karen: True. And what began to happen was trips to the grocery store at the beginning were harder. And I would carry my label reader along with me so I wouldn't have to keep putting on my readers.
[07:35] And he'd say, yay, nay.
[07:38] Now we go to the grocery store. It takes minutes because we are not perusing every aisle. Because when read the labels,
[07:48] most of the prepackaged food has things in it that we should not be putting in our bodies. In fact,
[07:57] I remember that January, right after we had been to this conference, we walked into one of our favorite discount stores, Doors, warehouse type, and it was all the healthy drinks, energy drinks and energy bars and protein bars, and we started reading labels.
[08:17] Remember that?
[08:18] Dr. Rodney: I absolutely do. And the reason why I could tell that something had changed is because we were willing to just keep walking and not buy it like we normally would have.
[08:29] It's like, wait a minute. I have this change in habit and it's really sticking. I really can resist this.
[08:37] Even though the packaging looks good, I want it well.
[08:40] Karen: It says healthy.
[08:42] Dr. Rodney: And all of a sudden, I realized to some degree that I'd been lied to. Yeah, strong word.
[08:48] And yet that was something that Dr. Murphy had said, is that we've been gamed. If you're living in the United States and you're unhealthy and you don't know why, there's a really good chance that you've been gamed by a couple of major systems that have developed in our country due in part to greed.
[09:15] And that's due to the healthcare system as we have it now. It's really a sick care system, but in conjunction with that is a feeder system that gets us there, and that's through the food industry.
[09:29] Now food also has to be teamed up with how does the food get to the table? And that's another story. But that's fertilizers and pesticides and what's.
[09:41] Karen: Subsidized so that it becomes more expensive to eat healthy than it is to eat what has been subsidized.
[09:53] Dr. Rodney: When you hear that the first time, that sounds like we're swimming upstream and maybe you're listening to this and you go, well, yeah, I'll preach it, but.
[10:03] Karen: What do I do? And that's where we want to be, the community.
[10:07] Because what gets us up in the morning when we wake up,
[10:13] at least this is how I feel.
[10:16] I definitely want to make sure that people that want to live a long, healthy life like I do, but don't know where to start can gain some clarity,
[10:30] confidence and control over their future health by taking small steps. And that's what stands for health is.
[10:37] Dr. Rodney: And isn't that where we started? Is the why? Yes, we want to help you develop your why with conviction. That way you can resist all the temptations that come your way that want to derail you from your positive health choice.
[10:54] Karen: Well, who doesn't want to live a long, healthy life? If I ask anyone on the street, do you want to live a long, healthy life?
[11:02] You just would not have somebody say, no, I want to be sick and I want to die young. But are you willing to make those daily health choices that are going to prolong your life and increase your energy?
[11:15] Are you willing to make those small changes? And most people I find, don't think it's possible. And I want to tell you, not only is it possible,
[11:25] but as time goes on and you create those new habits, it becomes.
[11:30] Is it okay to use the word easy?
[11:35] Dr. Rodney: You know, that's funny, you say that without going into a lot of depth. There's a difference between simple and easy.
[11:42] Karen: Your tastes begin to change and you no longer are craving the things you were craving before. Alignment is really important, but also flexibility and strength and balance and good posture. All of those things go into it.
[11:57] Dr. Rodney: Yeah, I mean you've got to have something solid to, to hang everything on, right? It's, that's the body work that we do. That's our bread and butter, if you want to call it that.
[12:08] It's the non toxic bread with the whole butter.
[12:12] Karen: Gold butter. Yes. I think what I most want you to walk away from hearing this is that there is hope.
[12:21] If you are in a place right now where you just feel like there's no way you could get there that we want to offer you hope that you can have a different attitude towards your health, a different attitude towards what you eat and the positivity that you can have in that means that you're going to have boundless energy,
[12:44] you're going to feel better I feel younger than I did when I met you, Doc.
[12:48] Dr. Rodney: That's good, because I feel younger than when I met you, too.
[12:52] I was barely making it from room to room and a PI class clinic. And as a. As a clinic director, I was barely making it from room to room without pain.
[13:00] Karen: PI means personal injury.
[13:02] Dr. Rodney: Oh, thank you for that. I took a lot of that, a lot of mercy or graces with that statement.
[13:09] Karen: So that sense of futility that you can't change the natural course of aging is something that, because of all the external environment and what we've talked about, the food system and the sick care,
[13:23] that you might become discouraged with it. But your greatest gift is your personal health, isn't it?
[13:31] Dr. Rodney: Yeah. I mean, if you don't have your health, then ultimately all the money in the world doesn't change that.
[13:38] Karen: And I've listened to a meme recently that. That's been popping up that says you can have all kinds of priorities until you lose your health, and then suddenly you have one priority and it's to regain it.
[13:53] So we want to help you with that. We want to walk beside you, because we've been there too. Haven't you felt overwhelmed at times with the choices of what to eat, where to eat out, all of those different things?
[14:06] The other part that is so important for what we bring to the table in this community is your experience as a chiropractor. How long has it been now?
[14:17] Dr. Rodney: I am so glad you asked that.
[14:22] October.
[14:23] Yeah. October of 1998 is the month and year that I was licensed. So last century,
[14:32] if you want to make me sound old.
[14:34] Karen: No, no, not that old.
[14:37] Dr. Rodney: That's funny.
[14:37] Karen: The thing that's so exciting is that we are definitely a chiropractic practice, but we add so many other things. What other things are we adding? Have we added since we started here in 2018?
[14:54] Dr. Rodney: The. The simple thing we were bringing. Postural neurology. Yes. And then we added laser and a more focused interest on holistic healing and. And mainly through nutrition and supplements,
[15:12] but removal of toxic, you know, toxic chemicals through food. And so we were paying way more attention to our food and our nutrition, as well as high intensity interval training with less of a focus on redlining.
[15:28] Karen: Yes, yes. And all of these things are all working together to help us to live a long life free of disability. Like the blue zones. But the thing about the blue zones is that there's a social component.
[15:45] And one of the things that I find so often with people that want to eat the way we do is what do I do? When I go to someone's house or what do I do when I go out to eat?
[15:58] Dr. Rodney: It's so deeply ingrained in our culture.
[16:01] Culture throughout the world. We tie food to fellowship and we tie food to really who we are. And so what we've had to do is say that we're on a special diet.
[16:15] Karen: Yeah. And it's simple in that sense. But it also means that for our family gatherings I bring the food. What we know about too is that these simple changes that we have made just make the commitment.
[16:29] People know you. These simple changes can transform your habits and through consistency,
[16:38] alignment, both physical and spiritual, neuroplasticity and self care that's going to extend for your whole life because that's what stance is all about.
[16:50] Dr. Rodney: Now we're on this journey with you as we take our stance for health. But more than that, for many of you, you don't have anyone else to reach out to or to hear from that this has been your choice or you're on the fence or you've just made the choice to do it or you want to make the choice to do it.
[17:12] We are here at whatever level you are, maybe even if you want to want to.
[17:19] Karen: That's a good point because that's a lot of it is you feel terrible. Right now you're just basically saying I feel terrible, I'm, I don't like the way I'm feeling and I can't keep going down this road.
[17:34] And we want to help you. In fact,
[17:37] call us at 972-8028812. We would love to have a pre service interview with you but if it's for functional medicine we can do telehealth. And so that is something that we've expanded and we want to help you with because we want you to have the success that you want to have.
[17:59] What does health look like to you?
[18:04] And that is a question only you can answer.
[18:07] The main thing is with that new health partner that started this week, you know what hers was.
[18:15] I just want to get on the floor with my 2 year old granddaughter and I want to be able to get up unassisted. And I said we can help you with that because that's a level of vibrancy of what only you can do.
[18:31] And that's our passion, is to release you to have the health to, to do what only you can do and go from being discouraged and unhealthy and with stooped posture in a sense of oh well to having control with new healthy eating habits like we do or an exercise,
[18:54] flexibility and strength and I demoed to her getting down on the floor and back up and I think it helped her believe that it was possible. We have had so much fun here today talking about our why because we want you to be able to take.
[19:12] Dr. Rodney: Your stance for health. Thanks for listening today. We look forward to talking to you again soon.
