Speaker 1:

Welcome one and all to so Professional Podcast. Remember, this is your podcast. It's for the pros that have a need to know that around the go, this is truly the voice of the sewing industry. I'm DJ Harrington, the co-host, better known as the Sew Doctor, and the real host of this program is the president and publisher of so Professional Magazine and a dear friend with the sewing industry, darren Weaver. Darren, how are you today, my friend?

Speaker 2:

DJ, I am fantastic and glad to be finally planted. I've done the show circuit from North Carolina, ohio, to Chattanooga and I'm glad to be back at home, even though the dogs didn't recognize me, but this is, let me tell you, this is going to be a great one. It's just like you say, it's worldwide equipment. Jeff Err, the chief executive officer, is on today and, as DJ says, world class. That's what you see every time you see him out and about and you see the equipment that they're working with. So, dj, I'm excited about this one.

Speaker 1:

Well, I could be president of Jeff Err's fan club, and so when you told me that worldwide was going to be on the podcast, I got excited, because when I needed help with people in the recycling industry, the first person I reached out to was Jeff, and Jeff said well, DJ, you know it's a little bit tough on some towing equipment, but we have box trucks with the automatic lift on the back. And every recycler jumped through and said, oh my can we meet this guy, so really was a winner.

Speaker 1:

So why don't you take the first one and get Jeff to introduce himself and everything, and I'll do numbers, all right.

Speaker 2:

Well, Jeff, again Darren Weber, publisher, top professional, I will tell our listeners a little bit about yourself. And then the first thing I know they want to know is how many years has worldwide been around? Because I know we got some great news on that one.

Speaker 3:

Thank you everybody. I appreciate it. It was kind of a word. I've been around for about since 2014. So about nine years now in this industry. I'll never forget when I got in this industry. Some of this industry is going to change your life and I said, nah, you know, it's just another day. But how wrong was I? Huh? You get this towing industry in your blood and you don't know how to get rid of it. So I'm glad to be here and glad to be with worldwide. I joined worldwide in 19 after leaving Juridan as the director of sales, marketing and day-to-day operations, and it's been a great experience for me in working with.

Speaker 3:

The Pritchard family Worldwide's been around for 20 years. We're celebrating that 20th year this year, 2023. It started back in 2003 with Pat and Kathy Wanner, who are both veterans of the towing industry, and they sold the business in 15 to the Pritchard family out of North Iowa and they've owned it since 15. And then I joined it in 19. And here we are celebrating our 20th year, which kind of pales in comparison about parent company is celebrating their 110th year. The Pritchard family's been in business for 110 years and they're on their fifth generation and more generations are coming every day. So they plan on being around for a long time as a citizen worldwide. Wow.

Speaker 2:

I tell you that's a fabulous history having a company with 110 years in the industry behind you. Jeff, what I can see is Pat and Kathy Wanner. They had built a first class company and worldwide. It's just the Pritchards have just come in the worldwide and just made it. Taken what's already been exceptional and made it even better. So it's really something that I'm so glad to have you on the day. Well, dj, I'm going to give you the next one.

Speaker 1:

You got it Well. Listeners, I want you to know Leadership wise. Jeff Ur is a leader of leaders and I think that's why it's world class at worldwide is because of his leadership skills. But, jeff, my question from our listeners what's new with worldwide this year? Some of the new things that you bring into market?

Speaker 3:

Well, we're always trying to bring into market what the Torah needs and how we can support the industry from a whole. So we have a lot of customers that are diesel repair shops and towing and they do towing. We have a lot of guys that dedicate themselves to towing and you have some others that diversify themselves into transportation and hauling. So it's really important for us to, worldwide, to be that leader is to make sure that we can provide the products that our customer needs when they need it. One of the items that we really heard from our customer was, no matter what we do to the tow truck itself, there's never enough storage on there and we know from time to time these guys of the industry have gone out and bought these trucks and try to customize the best as they can. So what we really focus on is listening to what the customer is asking for. Our latest couple of new ventures for us and trying to support our customers is one of our polypropylene incident management body that fits on a back of an 84CA truck and it's able to you can. It's very diverse from using it for airbags Instead of having to pull in a trailer. You can. You know we put these on like you know, brand 5,500 four-door cabs or, or you know, single two-door cabs, and this allows Aida to transport more employees out to first bill or for cleanup. But it also has roll-up doors, and three roll-up doors on each side and then a roll-up door on the back, so it can be used for everything from bringing more cutoff tools, more lumber, more straps, more chains, or it can either be used for everything from bringing the electric you know, a gas-powered room out or carry the airbags or a pump out tank to pump out fuel, whatever. It's very diverse. We launched it last year at the Baltimore Toe Show and we kind of launched it to get everybody to kind of feel for it. So this year I think we'll have something a little bit different on that same basis, kind of give you a overview of how we think going in the future.

Speaker 3:

So this incident management body and then we also launched a new service body, a high end, very well-thought-out product, with the Hackney Group. The Hackney Group is really known for the side loading beverage trucks and some of their plummet bodies. We went to them and said you know, a lot of our customers are also doing roadside assistance and all that, and they really need a sound place, safe place to work. And we developed stuff how delicious is this going to be the roadside service body through Hackney and we're proud to be the stripper of that product. And again, it's got room to put a large compressor in it. Welding art, welding systems, all that, and we really focus on the customer tool. We offer swing out doors with lighting so when the doors are open the oncoming traffic can see it. Or we went back to the side, roll up side doors and get in there. And again, we're always looking at how the safety you know we're privileged to, we're a dirt and rep.

Speaker 3:

But you know there's another brand out there who are doing great things for safety as well too, and we incorporated some of their thoughts in that process as well. Worldwide at Hackney worked together to build this body from ground up, and we're proud to have launched it at the far to show this year issue. As far to show. We launched it, sold our first one, and then right now we're just getting some feedback from that customer, making some improvements on those.

Speaker 3:

You know it takes a lot to build these things. It takes a lot to get it right, and we've been blessed to have good customers that will take the opportunity and talk to us about it. And then, of course, you know, jared and lost the auto grids and the carriers sometimes we've been really waiting for and they've been very aggressive with their business as well too. Not only did they lost the auto grids for the rollback carriers, they have also made quite a bit of improvements on their heavy duty product line, and so it's been a really impactful year for our team and learning all these new products and getting them out there. But you know it's what makes our business exciting.

Speaker 1:

Jeff, what I want to ask when you were talking about some of these doors that roll up, are there lights there that actually go on as the door gets rolled up?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, yeah, on both bodies, whether it's the range or polypropylene body, you, there's multiple doors to light up. As the doors roll up, you can, the whole area lights up. It's pretty bright. So the polypropylene is painted to the truck color on the outside, on the inside of the Virgin white, so the LED lights really reflect off that light. And I think if you drop your ring on the floor of the floor of the road, you'd probably be able to find it based off the light that's come off that system. And then on the road service body, when you open the swing doors, there's flashing reflecting lights and reflecting paint in the door that really gives the oncoming light. When the oncoming headlight hits it, it reflects back and you can see the flashing light. And then on the roll up door side of the service body again, when you roll up the door, the lights come on and within that compartment Boy.

Speaker 1:

it's just another way that worldwide want to keep safety as part of the whole program, Because you want the person to keep their loved ones goodbye in the morning and come home that night safe and sound. And that's what worldwide is all about. How about we do this? Can we take a fast break, Jeff, and we'll post for listening to Jeff Urr, the CEO of Worldwide Equipment and Tank Tight will be right back to hear more from Jeff Urr.

Speaker 6:

For 50 years, jordan has defined towing and recovery industry standards for performance, reliability and service. Jordan offers an extensive range of light, medium and heavy duty records, carriers and rotators. Each truck offers superior engineering for strength, stability, reliability and versatility to exceed the expectations of a demanding industry.

You know there's the saying God gave you one mouth and two ears. You're supposed to do twice the amount of listening. At Worldwide, they listen to the customer, as we're learning today. So, darren, I'm going to pass it on over to you so you can answer our guest. The next question All right, Thanks so much, DJ.

Speaker 2:

Well, against. The next question I have is just tell us some more about this incident management body what is it? And tell us some more inner workings about it, Jeff Sure.

Speaker 3:

You know, the incident management body is really a culmination of everything I've heard in the industry from day one, march 14th of 2014, when I joined Jurgen. You know, what I learned about this industry is that it can never have enough equipment on the side of the road to get this project going. And so I just, you know, was listening to everybody say, and I'd go visit Tollies and I would see that they had their own different types of vans and most of them were all used and high mileage stuff, and what we did is we just kind of Talk to a couple of bodybuilders and see what they could come up with that could be economical for these guys, because, you know, at the end of the day, it's an item that has to find its place in in the company and have to create revenue. And you know, I was able to have some great friends in the industry that have a business that they teach revenue and teach dollars the right way to do things. And I went and took his class he's a lifelong friend, a great friend of mine, eric and I saw a need for this product and, you know, my teammates at Worldwide Jim Holmes and Dave Gallinger, and many, many more of our teams all agreed that you know a lot of their. Their customers are out there for the same type of thing.

Speaker 3:

What it really comes down to is we want to develop. We want to develop a custom body that could service the the toers needs at a job site, at an accident team or you know. You know we do have toers that go out and list things with their rotators and it's a job site, but mainly at that instance team. They want to be able to bring more, everything from oil diapers to speed your eyes to four by four. You know, change more, change bigger straps, all that stuff that you know, no matter how big we make the rotate, how many times it is, it's never going to be able to carry all that they're going to need for every type of accident or every type of incident that they're there.

Speaker 3:

So the goal of this truck was to give you some some ability to to service that body right maybe. So the truck comes with 150 inch tunnel, 151 inch tunnel and a couple of side drawers that go up with shelving and then a back tunnel, a back area, and they have pull out 250 pound shelving. That shelves that pull out on both sides so you can pull it left or right and we kind of, when we launched it we just talked about it. It's really up to you, what do you need the truck for? So you know everybody's got a different need of everybody services their incidents differently and we kind of left it blank to try to really let the customer figure out some of the feedback.

Speaker 3:

We have gotten, as they like some more ideas with it. So it's really all about bringing a vehicle that you can actually, you know, invoice at the scene of an incident that actually can be utilized to carry more cones, speedy drive, broom shovels, you know, carpools, chainsaws, everything you can set you can't get in your normal wrecker that you want to get at that job site, to get off that instance site as quick as possible and the safety possible. So everything from a headset to rain gear, you name it and or if you need more people just to unload because you can't get up, you know a lift into the truck you can in. Most of the guys are reviving with the four doors. So it's, you know, six people and you can bring more bodies to the team, but it's really focused whether it's the incident manager body or the service body, it's really focused on providing more storage at the scene of the incident and that your normal record, everyday records, can't bring.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I think, jeff, you guys have come up worldwide, has come up with a tremendous solution for the industry, and I see these guys also use them out there, not only just to add to their their fleet something that is billable that they can use on the job site, but also a marketing piece, because it is such a nice piece of equipment. It adds to it. Like you said before, it was old, beat up vans and other things. Um you halls are used to carry this stuff out there. Now it puts you out there on the scene in a lot more professional manner, which just means more business. So I think you guys are not going to have a park with this incident management body. Dj, I'm going to turn the next one over to you, sir.

Speaker 1:

All right. Well, I'm really interested in the past question, so let me say with all of our listeners what is worldwide equipment doing for the eb revolution that we're all going through?

Speaker 3:

You know that's a kind of a loaded question, right. So listen, you know, at the end of the day we're a body distributor, right. We make, we distribute for multiple brands of bodies and on our parent side, the preaching side, we are really heavy into fleet management and car dealerships. So we're very blessed on on the world OIT to be part of that organization that brings such a bright future for us. So, as far as vehicles go, you know we're really on the backside of working with some big EV companies to see what the next step is and how we convert the hydraulic system over to several electronics and what that's going to look like. So, as far as your record and your carry today, I I am probably the um like you, waiting to see what the manufacturers will come up with. But as far as what worldwide is doing, again we're focused on how do we support our customer for all their needs today and tomorrow. And one of the things that I saw and my team saw, especially when you deal with some of the big um killing organizations and um and what was seeing happening and, and you know, the growth of EV was I think many people have and has not sat in class with you, dj, and at some of these shows, um, not only about storage but, more importantly, how do they get that car off the road out of a scene of an accident? How do they do it without creating more collateral damage to the vehicle and who's responsible for that damage? So we worked with a company out of Indiana and they said, well, we can provide a, a tool that would give you know if a car ran out of electricity. We could give that car a 15 minute charge, so you just enough to either get it off the highway or get it onto the flatbed and get it off the highway. But we thought that was a great idea and along with that we're like well, you know, you know as much as we all want to save the planet and move to Electric it, we all know the truth about it. You know we're gonna be in gas model for a long time and we have a supplier to our customer has to give them vehicles that a multi Functional when it comes to creating profits for them and creating usage. So we kind of looked at what most guys are doing today and that was some customers, what they're doing today.

Speaker 3:

There's a lot of guys out there, a lot of great and gals out there, great organizations out there that supply batteries. So it takes your car guys will come up and jump start your car and put a battery in there. If you get a flat tire, it will come up from the airline out, take your tires off, you know. And so we've got how we combine those two and we actually created what we call a roadside emergency van and it has an easy charging system that'll give you two 15 minute charging and then, once you've given those two 15 minute charges, as the van draws, we we cut or we recharge the the charging batteries off the alternator of the van. And we built it with storage and compression system, compressor system in there that you can go back and do your battery business, you can change your flat tires, you can service your own vehicles on the side of the road and we built it so you open the back doors up and you got 20, 40 feet of cord. You can jump start a diesel engine, you can dump, jump start a gas engine or you can jump start, you know, put 15 minutes of charge on your electric vehicle. So it's a multi-purpose, multi revenue generating vehicle and by just taking what you're using today to do roadside assistance with by placing this EV system in there to be charging system in there.

Speaker 3:

We've created what we've done ourselves. We just put it in a van and we we met with a few organizations to see how they would like to see it set up and we kind of run with that. It also had to shift the shore power so if it's parked at night you can charge everything up at night and we build it so it's walkable. You know Most people who are up to six to can walk into it and we increase the lighting inside of it when we wrap Really high powered LED lights around it so you can work at night. For now I think that's the best solution for us.

Speaker 3:

All of our facilities, whether in PA, michigan or Illinois, have EV chargers on the building. So also you can charge you. You can charge the vehicle. We're visiting that. A lot of our customers come by parts and Hop that they're charging there. You know, their car charger into these ports and go have a cup of coffee motor they're proud to with us. So that's the steps we're taking right now, along with working with some of our key vendors. I'm saying what the next step start. But you know I'm playing. My kids will probably be learning this. You know, before we really get to the point, we all know what it is right right.

Speaker 1:

Well, I know our listeners that they're going through all this, how you do two different 15 minute charge for your customers, the use of, you know, carrying extra batteries, tires feel it makes so much sense that this truck could be used for a lot of different industries, not just going, you know, all of a sudden my family has a large construction term that does 50 and 60 acres at a time on golf courses. They could have a truck like this out there just to take care of their own equipment.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, you know, you talked about that. The Pritchett's also on a golf course as well. They own a golf cart company as well. So when I am, that is on my talks with them, and the next family meeting is try to get them to buy a few too right.

Speaker 1:

Tell them DJ family is doing Donald Trump's place right now.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

All right, let's take a fast break and we'll come back with the CEO of world wide equipment. Jepper and type of will be right back.

Speaker 6:

Welcome back listeners. I want to thank all of you for listening to Toe Professional On-the-Go Podcast. Remember to like, review and share everywhere, like you have been doing. If you'd like to hear another industry expert like Jeff Urr, by all means fall down in myself at the Podcast Hotline Center. Our number at the Podcast Center 706-409-5603. Leave a voicemail and say this is who we'd like to hear the next time on the Toe Professional On-the-Go Podcast. So without further ado, darren, let me turn it over to you. It has been a great one. I am so proud to be part of this podcast.

Speaker 2:

Hey, same here, dj. I knew it was going to be fantastic. Well, I know we've all seen changes since COVID and everything else and I know it's affected and the ripple has went to every aspect of industry. So, jeff, I got to ask how has? I know you've got your ear to the grindstone and I know if there's anybody in those industries to you. So how has business been and what changes do you see coming?

Speaker 3:

You know business has really been hectic. You know the days of having lots of inventory on the ground have come and gone. You know we're hoping to have inventory on the ground again like we used to, but for now the vehicle chassis manufacturers are really struggling. There's a lot of EPA changes out there right now. California and Oregon went really, really strict. There's trucks that we're going to have in our fleet today that can't go to California or Oregon or can't even be sold in California or Oregon, and there's other states lining up behind there that are going to try to get on board with that. Hopefully we can stop it, but the train is running and we just have to watch what's going on closely. Suppliers are starting to get some ground as well too.

Speaker 3:

I think all of us have really struggled to hire and bring our forces up to our workforce, up to what we need to support the customers. You know it's been a really tough three to four years since COVID trying to get and to live up to the customer's expectations what we had passed. We've had a lot of success over the last year or so or more hiring new team members, but it takes a while to get them up to speed and our customers are looking for fast and expedient answers and sometimes we're not always as fast as we'd like to be because of that, but we are definitely. We've been very successful in hiring new people, bringing on new teams. We've been expanding. With the purchase of our Pennsylvania facility today, this past year is going to help us really expand and deliver to the customer's needs. But we are, we have been and we will continue to hire anybody that brings some good experience to this industry and can really make an impact on our team. So if you're out there and you're trying to figure out where your next career move is, you know, give us a call. We're looking for technicians, salespeople, parts people, you name it. We are in the growth mode and we are in more in the growth mode in the sense that we want to take care of our customers to the best of our ability and that requires the right people at the right place and the right time, and we're always looking for that person.

Speaker 3:

So I encourage anybody. You know just more to this towing industry than just driving a tow truck. It takes an army to save the planet and I'm looking forward to the next few years with it. So I appreciate the time with you guys. You know you guys have been a big, big part of my life since I've been in the towing industry. Dj was one of the first people I met and you know I've always believed in that. One malt in two years to listen twice as much. And when you get a chance to be around a guy like DJ Harrington, that's all I want to really do is work. And then, of course, darren you know that's all you've done for me is listen to me and my craziness over the years. So I appreciate our friendship and look forward to working with you guys for many more years.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I tell you, the thing that I got Jeff hooked on over the years was the Dreamland barbecue sauce. So that's where I encouraged him and got him when he came down here. But it's been a great relationship and Jeff really helped feed me with knowledge of the industry and helped me understand the needs of our readers as well. So it's been a mutual relationship. It's been good for both of us, I tell you. So, hey, listeners, make sure if you're interested in a job, whether technician, mechanic, sales, service or any other it's W-D-L-I-V-E-R-S dot com or just give them a call 815-725-4400. Let me tell you, if you want to have any questions about Worldwide, go to their Facebook page. You'll see how much they invest in their employees and how they honor them on the Facebook pages. That's really something special. They almost throw it back over to you, sir.

Speaker 1:

Well, I wanted to tell Jeff. When he was explaining the utility truck, I kept thinking to myself I need to send this to my family up in Jersey and let him listen to the podcast. Go to their website, because the Pritchard family they've done work to them, but since they're the largest infrastructure company in Jersey, they could at least look into this.

Speaker 1:

But, Jeff Err has been a leader and, jeff, it's really my privilege when I met you. I remember meeting you at the Baltimore Toe Show, when I was speaking up there and Jeff came over and talked, and it was the right philosophy between two people who really cared not just about the customer and listening to the customer, but they wanted to exceed expectations. They wanted to say how can I be an influence? And Jeff Err and worldwide has been a real influence in our industry and that's why today, darren, when you said we're going to have a monitor guest, I thought it was a great idea and I'm proud to know the guy. So, jeff, do you have any parting shots of what I wanted to ask you before we turn it over to Darren?

Speaker 3:

No, I appreciate the kind of words. We are what we call family business and that's what's made them around. That's what's brought the Pritchett family around for 110 years and what's kept as many changes worldwide has gone through. We still have that family mentality. As Darren said, we're very proud of our employees. We have a long tenure with some of our employees and we've got a lot of new people as well too, and hopefully they were around for a long time.

Speaker 3:

But I appreciate this time with y'all. This has been great. I look forward to seeing you all in person at the Baltimore Toe Show Always the life of the party there and we've got some great things I think that we're going to be bringing to the Toe Show. We're really focusing on the product and the things that we can do as an organization, not so much quantity of a model of truck, but we're looking at the quality of the truck. You can look at us when you're looking at all the other trucks. Look at the fine, the little stuff that we do to put that truck over the curb to you. So we appreciate the being in this industry. We appreciate everybody that supports us and look forward to seeing you all in person.

Speaker 1:

Well, darren, I just want my parting shot from DJ Harrington is worldwide supports the industry and we need to support worldwide. So at Baltimore, make sure you go by introduce yourself to Jeff Verb. If you don't know Jeff Verb, you go by, introduce yourself and tell him you heard it on the podcast. All right, Darren, I'll turn it over to you for your parting shot.
