Welcome one and all. You are listening to Toe Professionals On the Go Podcast. This is your podcast. It's for the pros that have a need to know that are on the go. This is the true voice of the towing industry. I'm DJ Harrington, your co-host, better known as the Toe Doctor, and the real man who's the real host of the program is the president and publisher of Toe Professional Magazine, a good friend of the industry and a dear friend of mine, darren Weaver. Darren, how are you on this beautiful date?
Speaker 2:Well, dj, let me tell you I am fantastic. As always, we've got some wonderful fall-filling weather here in Birmingham, so it's a great day to be peeking out the window and enjoying it, and I'm excited about our podcast. Today. We have one of my good friends on here been friends with Jeremy Smith of Phoenix, usa, since I started in this industry, and he's always a guy. When you turn the corner, you see him at a show, he's always got a big smile on his face and he'll always treat you to a cold sarsaparilla or so when you have a show, I'm happy to have Bobby.
Speaker 4:Now you're telling stories on me.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I've already started.
Speaker 5:You're already.
Speaker 1:People are going to tell tell a story on you. It'll be me, buddy.
Speaker 4:I believe every word of that. You can't go anywhere and hang around with the tow dock if he don't start telling stories on you. That's just facts, yes, but you better be careful, because I might know a story or two about both of you.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah, so be quiet, dj, don't say nothing.
Speaker 4:Yeah, be nice.
Speaker 2:Be nice, all right. Well, man, I tell you this is going to be a good one. Dj and I wanted to start out and give Jeremy an opportunity to just tell our listeners about more about Phoenix USA, kind of how it started, what caused the change of the company's direction and how many years Phoenix USA has been out here serving this wonderful industry. So, jeremy, welcome to the podcast and we'll let you take the mic.
Speaker 4:Well, thank you, sir. I appreciate you guys inviting me or even thanking enough of me to invite me. I thank the world of both of you guys. I love seeing you guys at the shows and look forward to seeing you again here in a couple of weeks. But Phoenix, usa has been around since 1985. How it started?
Speaker 4:Well, believe it or not, here in Cookville, tennessee, there was a furniture manufacturing company called Cherokee Furniture. That company started in 1960 by a lady by the name of Virginia Rucker, now Ms Rucker. She was a very, very hard worker. She had this furniture company and along with furniture furniture company she had to have delivery trucks. She grew her fleet to 15 trucks and she did not want her trucks looking bad. So these trucks were constantly being washed and of course, you know, back then steel wheels were just the staple. Everything had steel wheels on it. Steel wheels rust, we all know that. So she had her wheels chrome polished and of course, at that point finding center hub covers and lug nut covers was an issue. So she began looking for those things then.
Speaker 4:Well, while all this is going on, people are looking and noticing these wheels and they're asking her hey, where'd you get these wheels? You know, can you get me some wheels like that? And so people started bringing her wheels to have them chrome dipped and then put on their vehicle. And the whole time she's doing this she's also running her furniture company. That's kind of how the Phoenix side of things got started was with chrome wheels. Things got started was with chrome wheels. And then she hears about a company called alcoa who manufacture, produce aluminum wheels. As we all know, she goes and buys aluminum wheels for her entire fleet and starts that route. And then, of course, alcoa also needs center hub covers and lug nut covers. And that's just constantly eaten in the back of our brain. Where can I find these things? Where can we get them? Well, in 1984, october of 1984, if my memory serves the furniture company unfortunately had a major fire.
Speaker 4:It was a total loss, entire company burnt to the ground and, of course, when the entire building goes up, all your machines, everything, you're down for a long time. The workers there, you know of course they can't sit around for six months waiting for work, so they all go find new jobs. Well, during the rebuilding process she had some trucks that survived and she's still running people's steel wheels and getting them chromed. And out of the ashes of the burnt building came Phoenix. She did not go back into the furniture company. Her son-in-law, jim Wright, current owner for the last almost 40 years, he and her began.
Speaker 4:Phoenix USA with chrome steel wheels and then aluminum wheels with Alcoa. They put their heads together and they started producing center hub covers for these wheels, and that started Phoenix USA.
Speaker 2:Wow Now, dj, I knew if we dug a little bit. I know he had told me a little bit of the surface of this story in the past, but I knew it would be phenomenal. I take it Virginia Rucker was the one that started marketing with the bling in the industry.
Speaker 4:At the time she had no idea, as you guys are very familiar with the beauty competitions that we have at the tow shows today. She back then said you know what? I'm not going to have my trucks dirty.
Speaker 6:They're going to be looking good.
Speaker 4:When somebody buys a piece of furniture for me and I pull up in their driveway, my truck's going to look just as good as the furniture I'm bringing. So there we have it, wow and so there we have it.
Speaker 2:Wow, that is something. And look what that did and what it spawned from there Phenomenal. Love that story, jeremy, awesome. Well, dj, I'm going to throw the next one to you. I think we know what some of the staples are, but I'll let you go in with it for a further, deeper dive.
Speaker 1:Well, let me just ask, Jeremy, some of the products that are now staples of your business in the early days, what would you say to that? What was the staple back then?
Speaker 4:Well, obviously, the wheel simulators were our staple, and that's what got it started, because, so, as I said earlier, steel wheels, they rust, and even when you chrome dip these wheels, you know, once the chrome gets a chip in it, it's going to start rusting as well. So what Jim Wright, the owner of Phoenix, did, and his mother-in-law, miss Rucker, they designed a wheel cover that became known as a simulator. So what they did is they went and formed some stainless steel into the shape of this steel factory wheel, and then they designed a mounting system that would allow easy access for this steel simulator, this stainless steel simulator, to be mounted on a steel wheel. And the reason they did that was, at the time, alcohol wheels were they were rare or aluminum wheels they were rare and very expensive at the time.
Speaker 4:So not everybody could afford aluminum wheels but everybody wanted to make their truck look good. So the stainless wheel simulators just a more economical way of giving your steel wheels that polished look of aluminum or chrome. So 100% in my opinion, would be. The staple of Phoenixoenix, usa, was the wheel simulators, and then that just blossomed into our catalog that you see today.
Speaker 1:Boy, oh boy, darren. You know, the more you learn about this. Jeremy, let's do this, let's take a real quick break and then, when we come back, I'll bring us back after the break. But, folks, you're listening to Jeremy Smith from Phoenix USA, good friend of the industry, and we'll take a quick break and we'll be right back.

And before the break, jeremy Smith, who's really the voice of the Phoenix USA. We see him at all the shows. Darren, I'll turn it over to you so you can ask Jeremy, and this has been a great one.
Speaker 2:Awesome, that was great. Thanks, dj. He's definitely the outside sales guy, the public relations and, let me tell you, encyclopedia of knowledge when it comes to every bit of these products. The next thing I want to ask you, jeremy, for our listeners are I know one that you guys had to fight with along the way, and I know a lot of people. Thank you. You put everything in a box, you take it to the show, the show, everything's easy, and you go out and see the public. But tell us about one of the some of the interesting trials along the way as you've grown, the company that you've been faced with well, let's see here um, as you just said, a lot of people think that you just ship stuff to a show and you just show up and everything's magically there waiting on you set up and it's just not the way it is.
Speaker 4:As you guys know, you guys have done it for years as well, and you know there was one instance where you know we load our trailer here in Cookville and we have our own guys that drive a truck and pull this trailer to all the shows for us.
Speaker 4:And there was one instance where we were on our way to PWOF this was just maybe five years ago and so we have this large enclosed trailer you know we're talking 26 feet, 28 feet and heading down I-75,. A lady who was driving beside them, she had a blowout.
Speaker 4:She had a flat tire and it caused her car to get over into the tail end of our trailer, which at that point our trailer starts fishtailing and just slowly starts to turn over. And so you're going down I-75 at 70 miles an hour pulling a trailer and all of a sudden you're up on the right side of your vehicle. You know you look like the Dukes of Hazzard going through Hazzard County, you know, running from the law on two wheels, and then all of a sudden it just goes all the way over on the side with the trailer. And now you're sliding on the side down I-75, hoping that those 18-wheelers behind you can get on their brakes and not just run over you. But um, so all of our show material as you guys know, we have a large booth outside at pwf was in the back of this trailer yes and we're expecting to to crawl out of the truck and just see our stuff spread all over.
Speaker 4:You know, i-75 in Georgia. But luckily, the gentleman that loaded our trailer he loves straps, he loves them and he straps everything from wall to wall to the floor, believe it or not, all his straps kept that trailer together in one piece and it kept every bit of our show material, our displays, intact, unhurt, unscathed in any way. We lost absolutely nothing and we were very fortunate. Of course, everybody's thankful that nobody was hurt and then after that, our show stuff survived. So you know, now we're in a rush because you know, as you guys know, you've got deadlines during setup for these shows and so now we've got our stuff somewhere on I-75.
Speaker 6:Now we've got no truck, we've got no trailer.
Speaker 4:What are we going to do?
Speaker 6:We ended up renting like a.
Speaker 4:Hertz box truck. A couple of them. And, believe it or not, here's the great thing about our profession the tow guys that showed up to work the scene. You know they saw who they were helping. They're like.
Speaker 6:Hey, you know what?
Speaker 4:We know you guys we use your product. We'll be glad to carry some of the stuff down to the show for you Just a great great industry that we all work in.
Speaker 1:I'm glad to say that I'm a part of this industry.
Speaker 4:You know you meet just good-hearted, wholesome people like these guys that come to Air Rescue. You meet guys like the tow doctor. You meet guys like Darren Weaver, tow professional. It's just an outstanding industry that we are all associated with.
Speaker 2:Hey, man, I couldn't second that anymore. I tell you, jeremy, I wanted you to tell that story because from my end of it I knew Jeremy well and was wondering, hey, where's the booth at? And then I see him and every one of them has a smile on their face. They said hey, everybody's good, we had a small mishap was how he categorized it at the time. He said we got everything ready. And I walked back by, I think an hour later and after I talked with him and hear about everything and everything set up, everybody's smiling.
Speaker 2:So never seen a more professional setup. Guys that were right on time. And let me tell you, like he said, when the PWF walked by, when Mike Seidman and everybody come by to check it, make sure everything's good, they were set up, smiles on and ready to go to business. So you know, you never know what somebody goes through when they're going to get there. But I saw very early in my career that, hey, these guys got it together and no matter what comes up against them, they're going to handle it. And they were there meeting and greeting and seeing folks. And hey, that's another one that's right around the corner that we'll be at right after Baltimore to be here before we know it is the 2025 PWF shows, so it'll be there, they roll around fast.
Speaker 4:And like you said, sometimes everything's not peaches and cream, everything's not rainbows and glitter. Sometimes you know it's a struggle, you know, but you know around here, when life gets tough, we just roll our sleeves up.
Speaker 2:That's right, I love it. I love it. Well, dj, let's do this. Let's grab another break, hear from one of our wonderful sponsors and when we come back, guys, we'll have more great information from Jeremy Smith of Phoenix USA. Y'all, hang in there and we'll be right back.

Speaker 1:Welcome back listeners. You know you're listening to Toe Professional on the Go podcast. Now this is a good one because my dear friend Jeremy Smith from Phoenix, usa, is on here and I have to tell all our listeners, when you see me at the Ohio Toe Show in the last two years I had to be in their luncheon display and wear a safety garment and have all these women yelling. Because four years ago in Ohio, jeremy walks over to me and says hey, doc, can I borrow your jacket? I'm going to do this luncheon thing and I want to go as Dr Love. And so he gets my jacket.
Speaker 1:Darren puts the jacket on the stethoscope the big rubber glove that's for veterinarians. He takes that with him and he goes, and the whole place loved Dr Love, I love it. Fantastic job, raised money for charity. It was a great, great cause and Jeremy is you know he wants, he loves the industry so much that he would do something like that. The only sad thing that happened is now, every year when we go to Ohio, they ask me now to be in this thing with my doctor jacket on, and so I'm the oldest person that has to go down and, you know, act like a nutcase to raise money.
Speaker 4:He's being a little modest here, guys, if I can just interrupt. He's being a little modest. You know, I did take the jacket from him one year, you know, but those are big shoes to fill. Nobody can be the doctor like DJ. Nobody can fill his shoes. And so I went in there and I just did a poor job of it. I did get a lot of laughs, but now DJ goes in there as himself the toe doctor and he walks out with pockets full of it. I did get a lot of laughs, but now DJ goes in there as himself the toe doctor and he walks out with pockets full of cash. I mean, these ladies are stuffing his pockets. I mean it's a sight to see.
Speaker 2:It looks like football players walking into a game.
Speaker 4:They're just stuffing money everywhere in their pockets. You know, you'd think he's a rock star or something.
Speaker 1:Oh yeah and Darren, the worst part is here. I am an old man now with a cane and these people, these ladies, are taking pictures and stuffing money. They love him, they love him. All right, let's get back to the serious part. Here's what I want to ask my dear friend what are some of the latest products that our audience would like to know more about? You know we call them the raving fans that love Phoenix, USA. So, Jeremy, what's some of the latest products?
Speaker 4:Well, we love raving fans, especially raving Phoenix fans. Let's see here. So if I had to pick a product that would be new, our latest would be we have a rear mounted utility toolbox. Now this thing mounts behind the control panel on your carriers, on your rollbacks, so it'll go in between your control panel and your rear, your control panel and your rear taillight assembly. We'll call them. This box is. It looks just like our standard toolboxes, just a mini size, mini version of it. This box comes and it's 20 inches wide. It's going to be about 14 inches tall and then 12 to 18 inches deep, and then 12 to 18 inches deep.
Speaker 4:We had a prototype of this box. We came up with this idea a few years ago and we just finally got around to producing a prototype of this box and we thought you know what? Let's build a couple of these, let's take them to the next show, let's debut it, let's just get a feel of what the industry would think of something like this. And so we did. We mounted a couple of these things on some trucks that we had in our booth. We had a couple of these boxes sitting in our booth and the response was overwhelming. We loved it. Our customers were like, yes, this is something that we need, we would absolutely use this thing. Like, yes, this is something that we need, we would absolutely use this thing. So we are now producing this box and hopefully we're going to have a bunch of these things ready to go by the next show, so that would be our newest product that we are raving about.
Speaker 2:Awesome, yeah, and I saw it at the shows and let me tell you anytime you can create more places for storage. It's a win-win for these trucks. And also another thing I noticed you had that I think I've heard a lot of people talking about are your blacked-out simulators being able to give what they call that murdered-out? Look the blacked-out wheels. I've seen a lot of people raving about those as well being able to put those on the truck.
Speaker 4:Yes, that is absolutely another new product for us, these wheel manufacturers. They now offer like you say a blacked out version and these aluminum wheels, you can get them black, and so now that just once again it leaves the center and the lug nuts exposed.
Speaker 4:So we have produced black hub covers to go along with your black aluminum wheels, and the response for that has been impressive. We've been very fortunate. You know it's drawn a lot of attention. A lot of people like that look. Obviously we still do offer, you know, the chromed ABS as well. So we're not getting away from that. We're not putting all of our eggs in the black wheel market, but it's just another offering that we have.
Speaker 2:I tell you, the difference is like you said. It's so staggering. If you scrape a wheel up and you have to replace that wheel, the cost as opposed to just sticking a new simulator on and having a brand new wheel all over again is, hands down, the easiest choice to simulate.
Speaker 4:Oh, you're absolutely right, and the simulators versus. You know a set of aluminum wheels. The simulators are, you know, 25% the cost of a set of aluminum wheels and you're going to get a polished, stainless 304. You're never going to have to worry about those simulators rusting. So you know it is a very good product.
Speaker 2:Awesome, awesome, dj, let me grab this last one. I did want to ask Jeremy about this. I know that you've got some standout products that owners need to know about and the things I was thinking about, jeremy, that just everybody knows the storage boxes, the brackets, the different things you offer there, the simulators. But I tell you, with the array of the other accessories you offer, from the lighting products to the fenders, your electrical parts for wiring, your accessories and even the tow racks I wanted to give you an opportunity to talk about some of those products that might be a little more little or known, but can go a long way with somebody that's putting together a service vehicle or upgrading and updating some of their current vehicles.
Speaker 4:Oh, great question. Great question. Appreciate that question. Evidently you've done some research on some of our products and I love to hear that. Yeah, so we don't just stick with wheel simulators, toolboxes. We do a large number of mounting brackets for those toolboxes. But Phoenix is not just simulators and toolboxes. We have a 12-volt air compressor that we've offered for years and just about every AAA truck in America has one of these air compressors on it, it's 12 volts, got a three-gallon tank, three-quarter horse motor.
Speaker 4:It's just. It's really been a great workhorse for us. It's been one of those great products that served us well for a number of years. We have our JumpMax line. Basically it's like jumper cables.
Speaker 5:You hook one end up to your battery.
Speaker 4:You run a plug out the grill or out the side of your truck. You keep the other end behind the seat in a toolbox and if you get a call, you need to go boost the car off.
Speaker 4:You don't even have to pop the hood or get back there to your battery boxes. You can just plug it up into your grill or wherever you ran the plug out and then start the car. We have, just like you said, we have an array of products. You mentioned our Torex line. Now, a lot of people may not know what we're talking about because that product line was designed for, believe it or not, it started in the enclosed trailer or toy hauler world. So these guys that have these pull-behind campers, that's a toy hauler. So you got half living quarter, half garage for your side-by-sides. You know, whatever the case may be, they needed somewhere to store their tools, somewhere to store their extra oil, whatever, the case may be, to hang their helmets. So we started this aluminum storage line. It's basically just aluminum cabinets, brackets, but we named it Tow Racks, t-o-w Tow for the towing company the towing industry, which we've been involved with, and then Racks R-A-X, and then our logo is like the T-Rex dinosaur.
Speaker 4:I mean it's a very neat line. We've had a lot of success with this line as well. Everything from floor tracking, tie-down systems, motorcycle wheel chocks, and then, like I said, it's a lot of storage cabinets for your tools, your bottles of oil, WD-40, anything you can think of of oil, WD-40, anything you can think of.
Speaker 4:And so it actually can filter over into the towing world, because all these guys have a garage, they've got a shop, whether it's at home or at work, that these products you can hang them up on the walls in your shop and you've got somewhere to hang your tie downs, your straps, your helmets tape, just whatever the case may be. But it's another great line of products that you know people should look into.
Speaker 2:Yeah, when I saw it, Jeremy, and I saw that you had everything from, like you said, the tie-down tracks and accessories in there to the. There's even tire racks, tire storage racks, you name it Um, from our, our vendors that go to the shows, from like a, a Perry Beatty that's got the uh has hazmat responder network, a big trailer for it and flow stop. I know he uses various things like this inside and I know a lot of our vendors, from Matt Jacks to others, that have their enclosed trailers. Um, these would be great accessories. And let me tell you that's one thing, uh, that that me and dj pride ourself on is when we know folks that are quality and have quality products, we try and put those folks together.
Speaker 2:So, let me tell you, towing industry, if you're looking for additional accessories, it's not just simulators, it's not just toe box, uh, toolboxes even though they do some of the best out there but they've also got many other products, from their accessories to lighting, to fenders, electrical products, circuit boxes, you name it things that you need to do, wiring for things together. They've got those in stock, so phenomenal. Well, jeremy, let me ask you this Our listeners, if they want to look at these products online, because I know you guys got a great looking website that breaks everything down. It's got the products. It tells some of the story about you. It tells about the TORACS line. What's a good website address for them and what's a good phone number that they can call to get information in the future?
Speaker 4:Website, phoenixusacom. You can reach anybody here at Phoenix area code 931-526-6128. We also have an 800 number, 800-786-8785. I appreciate you guys bringing me on. You mentioned that tire storage rack. So just a brief history on that. Everybody's heard of Tire Rack, the company where you can buy wheels and tires, you know as a combo kit. Those guys actually approached us and asked if we could do that rack for them. So that's where that came along.
Speaker 4:So yeah, just like you said, we're not simulators and toolboxes solely. You know we have an entire engineering and design team here in Cookville. We do all kinds of metal fabrication, machining. We've got capabilities to work with plastics and polymers. Hydraulics. We do all kinds of casting. We can do any kind of you know, cnc work, whether that's mill or lathe. You know drilling, tapping, polish. We offer all kinds of service. We also offer proprietary products to a lot of people. So you may see some of the same stuff at shows and think that's all that we do, but that's not the case. A lot of times we do proprietary products for people. So obviously we don't take their product to tow shows or anywhere else, even though we manufacture these products for those people. We have the capability of storing these products for you and you're just letting us know how many a week you want us to ship you or how many a month you want us to ship you, if you've got a product idea that you would like to see brought to life.
Speaker 4:Like I said, we have a full engineering and design team. You can come here and work with our engineers. I like to call them the arts and crafts department and of course I can't say on air what they call the sales team, but we call engineering and design arts and crafts department.
Speaker 4:And of course I can't say on air what they call the sales team, but we call engineering and design arts and crafts. You know, every year for Christmas I'll get them a new case of crayons and some drawing papers back there for them. But no, we have a lot of smart people here.
Speaker 5:And like.
Speaker 4:I said, if you've got a product idea that you'd like to see brought to life, give us a call, let me know. I can meet you, we can go over your ideas and I can bring you here and meet with our engineering, or I can bring one of my engineers to you. So don't think of us as just toolboxes and simulators we are way more than that.
Speaker 2:Awesome, awesome.
Speaker 1:Well, DJ, final thoughts. Sir, I am so proud. I know Jeremy, Jeremy, you explained it very, very well and I know our listeners. If they're thinking about bringing a product to market, coming over and talking to you a little bit about it ahead of time would be a good idea.
Speaker 4:Absolutely. You know, sit down, talk with us and, like I said, it would be your product. We would not advertise it, we would not sell it to anybody, but you, we're basically just going to be producing it for you. So, yeah, if you've got an idea, give me a call. We want to work with you.
Speaker 1:Well, boy, Jeremy, you're a good man. Darren you're right. This was one of the best podcasts we've had, so this is good. And every quarter he's going to be back on here, so this will be good.
Speaker 4:That's right. I look forward to it. Guys, I can't thank you enough. I appreciate your friendship more than anything. I appreciate the industry, the work both of you guys do. Hey, and like I said earlier, when this industry gets tough, both of you guys show up with your sleeves rolled up, and this industry owes you guys a big thank you.
Speaker 2:Well, thank you. Thank you so much, jeremy. We certainly appreciate having you on. We appreciate the breakdown on all the products. Having you on, we appreciate the breakdown on all the products. And again, remember, listeners, whether you're looking for simulators, whether you're looking for storage boxes and brackets, quick trim products, hub and lug covers, anything hideaway, surface mounts, aluminum wheels, electrical parts, lighting, fenders, accessories, tow racks, or if you're looking for a part to be made Specifically For you to offer as an OEM or distributor, the guys are here for you, some of the best in the business. I couldn't recommend them enough.
Speaker 2:And, as always, folks, I want to say a prayer for our industry. Dear Heavenly Father, our nation is at a point where we certainly need your direction. We ask that you put a hedge of protection Around our nation, around our leaders out there, around our servicemen and women, around the family members that have lost others during the Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Helen. We know we have many that are suffering in Tennessee, florida, ohio, north Carolina, parts throughout that were affected by these hurricanes and, dear Heavenly Father, I ask that you meet them right where they are, meet their needs, fill them with peace and give them hope for a better day, and let them see your promise coming forward.
Speaker 2:Dear Heavenly Father, we ask that you protect our vendors, that you increase their knowledge, help them bring more products to the industry to promote safety and help our first responders come home safely for their work in this industry. Dear Heavenly Father, put a hand out there around our men and women of towing, keep them safe, help them prosper for their servant's heart. Keep them safe, promote them with help, wisdom, knowledge, and let them see how much they're appreciated in our industry. Until next time, we thank you, lord, amen, and I thank every one of you listeners for being here. You made this one of the number one podcasts in the industry and until next week, that's it For Co-Professional On the Go podcast. We'll keep bringing great guests out here, like Jeremy Smith of Phoenix USA. Thanks again, and God bless.
