Welcome one and all to the Toe Professional Podcast. This is your podcast. It's for the pros that have a need to know, that are on the go, the true voice of the towing recovery industry. I'm DJ Harrington, better known as the Toe Doctor recovery industry. I'm DJ Harrington, better known as the Toe Doctor, and the real host of this program is the president and publisher of Toe Professional Magazine, a good friend of the industry and a dear friend of mine, darren Weaver Darren, how are you today?
Speaker 2:And DJ, let me tell you I am fantastic in this new year. I'm in Birmingham, alabama, as you know, and we've already had several inches of snow, which is unheard of, so it's already started off a little wild and exciting for 2025. So couldn't be much better. Why not start the new year with one of our long-term partners in the industry and one of the finest in lighting products, with Executive Vice President Chris Anderson today at Towmate? So this is going to be a great one and, I think, one our listeners have been waiting for.
Speaker 1:Well, I know one thing Chris has been on before. Our listeners love him, so I'm going to start us off. So let me first just say this Welcome back, chris. It is great to have you here again. Could you remind our listeners about your journey with TowMate and the roles you've played over the? You know, and I know for a fact, it's 40 years, so the company's 40 years, that's for sure.
Speaker 3:Well, yeah, hey guys, thanks for having me. It's good to be back. Always A pleasure to be on the show With you all and I love the the hype man Demeanor you got. You know it's a good day, it's a good year and it's a good year and it's a joy to be here kicking things off. So again, I'm Chris Anderson, executive VP of TowMate. Been with the company full time for 16 years but, truth be told, I'm kind of a wiper. My father, brian, started the company in 1985, 40 years ago, and he's still with the company today. And so, you know, I kind of started working my way up from repairs to production, tech, sales and marketing and all the way to where I am today. So you know, it's good to know the business through and through. So, yeah, thanks for having me guys.
Speaker 2:Awesome man, dj. Let me tell you and I've said this before on here I remember when I first got in the market and met Brian and Chris at the International Towing Hall of Fame and Museum and I was like, after talking with them, I was like, listen, if everybody in the market is this nice and this passionate about the industry, I'm going to absolutely love this. And here we are, 14 years later, and it was true.
Speaker 2:Well, I'm saying for me 14 later, and and and for Tomate 40, man, I mean just the growth I've seen in the in the 14 years I've been here and the growth of products is phenomenal. So I guess that opens to my next question I want to ask, chris is I know Tomate celebrating their 40th anniversary, which, first off, is a unbelievable milestone seeing what's all happened in our economy and everything else the last 40 years, and you guys are standing strong in the industry? Can you share what this milestone means to you and the company?
Speaker 3:Well, absolutely, and first let me apologize for interrupting there 14 years is also quite the accomplishment, and I think my hair follicles have changed some colors since then. It's probably grown fewer in number, but it has been a privilege to work with you. And yeah, you know, 40 years it's truly amazing. You know, as with any truly new product which is what wireless toe lights are or were in 1985, it all starts with an idea. Right, the odds are incredibly stacked against you as a budding entrepreneur At the time.
Speaker 3:To even get to a prototype stage, it took a lot of investment and from there you've got to kind of see what you got in your piggy bank and then most likely have to look for investors and partners, and so you have to get into an incredible amount of emotional and financial debt before the thing is ever given a chance to sink or swim. You know, I really don't think I have the words to describe the respect I have for my father's tenacity and ability to stick with his idea and pursue his dreams over the years. So yeah, I mean 40 years. It's a big deal to us and it simply wouldn't be possible without the support of the industry and, of course, the end users.
Speaker 2:Yeah, to say the least, Chris, and I tell you, I've seen some things from my eye, just from the outside, that your dad has done, and yourself, to stand out in an industry. And one I've seen was the scooters that your dad did one year for all the employees as a bonus for them, and it was just phenomenal to see it and it showed a company that was investing in their employees and showing that. Hey, I've seen you, I'm watching you and you matter, so that that really stood out to me. Well, dj, I've seen you, I'm watching you and you matter, so that really stood out to me. Well, dj, I'm going to give you the next one to ask you.
Speaker 1:Well, I want to tell all our listeners when Chris was young here's this one Darren, his dad and, of course, chris was there and they were sharing. They were at their booth, told me, and next door was Auto Data Direct and I was there at the Auto Data Direct booth and the Auto Direct you know the Auto Data Direct people said is there any way we could tell you guys when you could turn the lights on? Because, chris, as you know, people come by and they say can you demonstrate these lights? What had happened? Darren is in the middle of Jim Taylor giving his so-called premiere presentation. They turned on the lights. Taylor would get so frustrated. When I showed up, Chris's dad, brian, says to me now, doc, if I know, you guys are giving that presentation, when you stop and I will then turn the light on they'll get your attention.
Speaker 2:Man, I'm telling you, those lights will get your attention oh yeah.
Speaker 1:And Jim Taylor looks at me and said he wouldn't do it for me, but he'll do it for the DJ all it is, jim, is how finesse you are. And when I went to your dad. Your dad said hey, doc, whatever what's good, will you let me know when the presentation's over? And he was a super co-mate entertained both groups, he entertained the people at the lights and, at the same time, the people that we had just finished up giving our presentation to.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah.
Speaker 1:Died over and bought some lights Yep, the right way of doing it. And, of course, his dad's a very fine gentleman. So let me just tell you, I've known Chris since he was a young'un. Okay, so let's do this one, chris, as we go along, tell us in the early days what was the founding vision of Tomei? What was your dad thinking when all this started?
Speaker 3:Well, and I'll kind of borrow this from how he likes to tell the story you know that the idea occurred when a couple of brain cells collided, so you know.
Speaker 3:But as far as the vision goes, I I think it's always really been about legacy, um, you know, about building something that can provide stability to his family and indeed others, for generations to come. And I think that's really a big part of why we do so much in-house and keep manufacturing in the neighborhood, so to speak, us manufacturing. It's a big part of why we remain a bastion of American manufacturing qualities. We remain a bastion of American manufacturing qualities. What grew from a desire to kind of be the master of one's own destiny, which is a driving force for every entrepreneur, really developed into this kind of taking care of those around you philosophy, and that's really sculpted our company culture, be it internally with, you know, policies, uh, to product development, uh, and in the ways in which we conduct business as a whole, uh, you know it's. It's really about taking care of those around us, and that that remains the vision today.
Speaker 1:And it is that way. So, darren, let's do this. Uh, let's do this. Let's take a real fast break and when we come back, I want to hear more about what Tomeit's story is and what's happening and what's going to be some of their products coming down the road. So hang tight, listeners and Darren and I'll be right back with Chris Anderson from Tomeit, hold tight. With Chris Anderson from Tomei, hold tight.

We're available on Spotify, itunes, pandora, stitcher, iheartmedia, amazon or wherever you get your podcasts. So, darren, I'm turning it over to you, my friend, well man DJ, I'm turning over to you my friend.
Speaker 2:Well, man, dj, I told you this was going to be an informative episode and I always love this one because the guys are always asking about lighting, and if you've ever been by the booth to Towmate and talked with Chris or Brian at the show, you'll know they are an encyclopedia of information when it comes to lighting, so I love it. So next question, chris what has been some of your key milestones and innovations in the Intomate journey?
Speaker 3:Sure, Well, you know, it's never been smooth sailing down easy street you know as any business owner would tell you. You know, going back to the early days, you know, I remember my dad just driving around in a station wagon flashing his headlights to get tow trucks to pull over so he could show them his product. Wow.
Speaker 3:Take it to your leader. You know, and I mean it's truly a grassroots story, you know. But some of the milestones, I mean I think Paul with Zips, he kind of gave a vote of confidence in those early days and placed for us at the time especially, a rather substantial order that really not only gave some financial stability but it gave that reassurance that hey, this is something to continue to believe in. And my dad could tell the story better about all that. But technology-wise, in the innovations that we've kind of been the trailblazer on the very original systems, the transmitters had to actually be wired into the truck. There was no, just plug it in and turn the light on and roll. It wasn't really something you could move from truck to truck. It was an investment. Well, when we were able to redesign those to where they just plugged into the receptacles on the truck, that was probably the first major evolution of the product. Major evolution of the product, you know. From there the advent of LED technology. You know that was huge. It allowed for longer run times. You know smaller batteries. The things didn't have to be the size of a mailbox and be one part magnet and one part gravity holding it to the vehicle. It in one part, gravity holding it to the vehicle. With the LED technology, you know it's brighter, longer run times and so forth. You know that was a huge step.
Speaker 3:And then you know, beyond that, you know there's kind of a funny story. You know one of our first, you know, real big seller is called the TM2. And that all spawned from. You know a customer calling up and saying, hey, why don't you guys make like a single unit with just one white strip across it? You know, go to your local Harley dealership or you know motorcycle, and you know they have that strip on the back that's left and right. And so you know he obtained one and put, you know, put together a unit and took it to his wife at the time and she's like that thing is ugly as sin. Nobody's ever going to buy that. Well, it wasn't long after it became the number one selling wireless tow light and that design is still the base for all of our most popular light duty wireless tow lights. So that just goes to show mama ain't always right, but you know from there.
Speaker 3:I think another major innovation is our power link lighting where we send signals over existing wiring to activate our warning lights. Usually installation you've got to run long wire looms or, you know, do long wire runs. We're able to utilize existing factory wiring to activate these lights on different parts of the truck, a technology that still has not been seen as much adoption as it could, but those that know they love it. So, and from there I mean it's again back to the batteries. You know changing and still gradually making the shift over to lithium, getting more people into lithium, you know these are all things that not only are we the first at doing but the best at as well.
Speaker 3:And you know, implementing different functions into the lights too, implementing different functions into the lights too, with our new Sabre light. It's the brightest wireless telelight that's ever been, but it also has a super bright work light mode, backup light and integrated amber strobes all in one unit and it's lithium powered. That's kind of today's innovation, that. And the Hinvi lights, those high intensity lights that they're not visible to your eyes but when they hit your vest it lights your vest up. So it's all about worker visibility. So you can tell, just kind of over the few conversations we've had, we don't really sit still for long around here.
Speaker 2:Man, I tell you, in 40 years. It's amazing. It's like going from the, the black and white TV with a knob on it, uh, to the latest thing out there. It's tremendous, um, and we've seen the, we've seen the product, uh, change over the years and the feedback on it, and I just love hearing about it and seeing the latest products. Well, dj, I'm going to throw this next one to you.
Speaker 1:You got it. Chris, would you be kind enough for our listeners? Could you share a memorable story about Homemade's history with our listeners?
Speaker 3:Sure, yeah, in fact I got a couple here for you. Like I said, I'm a lifer. So it all started back at the tow shows going to the tow shows in the motorhome with my dad and helping assemble units. I might have told this story before, but he likes to tell it. It's about me negotiating a piece rate. Even at a young age, apparently, I've always had a bit of a business acumen, I suppose. Going to those tow shows, helping them actually assemble products on site shows, helping them actually assemble products on site.
Speaker 3:Um, there was a, uh, a guy. I don't remember his last name, but he was uh, he, he used to have a parts booth. Uh, his name was Ernie, I think he was from Wisconsin, but he was always so kind and and uh, I remember one time my sister and I were getting bored and and uh, we weren't staying at the hotel, obviously we had, we were in the motor home is and so he was like, well, you guys go swim, you know, uh, and if anybody says anything to him, tell him Ernie sent you. You know Ernie said, uh, so it, you know it is cool to have that kind of support. You know he believed in my dad as well and and you know, bought and sold the Towmate products that all led to, just within a couple years of that, my dad's still out there on the road pounding the pavement trading tow lights for a mountain lion.
Speaker 3:We ended up with a family pet named Zeus. My father had been down I believe it was in Alabama making cold calls and he sees this tail from behind the desk and he's like what's on the other end of that tail? They're like, well, you know this mountain lion cub, you know, I don't know how or where they got it, but he's like, yeah, I'd love to get rid of it, it's distracting all my workers. He's like, yeah, I'd love to get rid of it, it's distracting all my workers. So my dad traded a set of tow lights for Zeus and he became part of the squad. He actually would travel to some of the tow shows in the early years, before he got real big. My dad would take him to schools and stuff too. But Zeus was a good boy, he was a good cat. Kind of funny, though, trading lights for a cat.
Speaker 2:Only in Alabama, Chris. Those things happen there were some major struggles.
Speaker 3:There was a time of having to endure bankruptcy and nearly selling the company, you know, for what seemed like pay dirt at the time you know, a hundred thousand dollars and came this close to doing it and, you know, fortunately stuck with it and allowed us to continue to grow and, you know, persevere beyond anything he probably imagined. And the story you were mentioning earlier, darren, about the scooters we were still working out of the downstairs of the house my father and I lived in and had a few employees, probably, I think, six employees at the time and six employees, small workspace but big dreams. And he said you know, the day we hit this amount in a month, I will, I'll buy every one of you a scooter. Uh, because part parking was was beginning to become an issue in the driveway. But you know we didn't hit that number until we were out of that space and into another building. But we did hit it and he made good on his word for those employees that were there at the time and still with us.
Speaker 3:And you know it's all about again taking care of those around you, having dreams and, and you know, driving, driving, uh, each other to, to push the boundaries of what's possible and what we can achieve together before and I'm sure you've heard it before.
Speaker 2:It must be nice and I've told a couple of people before. Well, if you had to do it to get where I'm at, it probably killed you, because a lot of folks don't understand the struggle and the things you go without to build a company, and I want to hear more about Zeus in the future.
Speaker 3:I got to tell you that that is awesome.
Speaker 2:Well, my next question is tell our listeners this I know, I know, but how has Tomei shaped the towing industry over these last four decades?
Speaker 3:Okay, yes, I mean I would say we've significantly reduced the amount of time tow operators have to spend on the roadside. I mean, they still have to deal with the winch, the straps and chains, but even a couple of minutes can be significant, especially multiple times throughout the day, or a few minutes, especially multiple times throughout the day, or a few minutes having to run a you know, dig out a set of corded lights, untangle them, route the cable so that hopefully it doesn't scratch the customer's finish. You know all of that is circumvented with the wireless tow lights. And, of course, the less time you're on the side of the road, the less prone you are to. You know the uh, uh, the that would, should not be spoken. You know, you don't, you don't want to find yourself in those moments of, uh, incredible danger, and so the the less amount of time on the road, uh side. You know that that that's one way that is immediately apparent. You know that our product has shaped, uh, the, the towing industry.
Speaker 3:You know, outside of that, maybe not as blatantly obvious, but you know different technologies that we've implemented into our lighting, for instance our overhead light bars. We coined the phrase peripheral parabolic technology. We coined the phrase peripheral parabolic technology and basically what that amounts to is the way our optics shoot the light, project the light. It's almost brighter the further from them you are. So you can be two miles down the road. You're going to see this thing. You get right up on it or you're the tow operator yourself. It's not that huge beam spread that's blinding you in your face while you're trying to. You know, do your job. You know things like that. It just shapes. It shapes how these minute factors, you know you tweak enough of them significantly enough, and it adds up to a big effect on the amount of safety on site. And so that's kind of just another component in how we've shaped some of that.
Speaker 3:So, beyond that, with the newer stuff we're doing, like I said, this hinby lighting, the high intensity non-visible intelligent illumination uh, an acronym I did not coin, uh, but it's uh. It's these leds that you know it's essentially like a black light. You don't see it, you know it's not giving you uh. You don't see stars after you look at this thing, but when it flashes it makes you visible with your high-vis safety gear. It's lighting up 90% of that vest, whereas you know previously you're just getting reflection off, maybe 10% with those stripes.
Speaker 3:This is lighting up the other 90% with the bright yellow color, you know, making you a beacon yourself, and I think, as that becomes more widely adopted which I do believe it will that's going to really alter and shape the towing industry as well. As you know, all sorts of highway departments, transportation, things of that nature, where these guys are out there exposed and oftentimes overshadowed or outshined by all the other lights flashing or no light at all, this is going to help motorists be more aware of the workers themselves, as well as the workers themselves being aware of each other if it's a multi-person job. So you know, we're always working towards shaping a safer future.
Speaker 2:I agree with you on that 100%, chris, and I got to tell you for the owners out there, for our listeners that are drivers or working your way through the company, for our listeners that are drivers or working your way through the company make sure you check into the Henvy Lights because this is something else and, like I said, without blinding the people that are approaching you, they can see you clearly. And the ads. Tomei does a phenomenal job on their advertising, with their marketing ads, but it doesn't do the product justice. If you get a chance to see videos on it or see a display of it yourself in person, you'll buy them because it does a fantastic job at illumination. Well, let's do this, dj. Let's take a quick break for our sponsors and then we'll come back and we'll have more phenomenal information from Executive Vice President Chris Anderson of Towmate Listeners. Hang in there, we'll be right back.

Or if you're an association that has some upcoming news that you want to get out on the podcast, by all means 706-409-5603. All right, now let me ask the next question, darren. All right. It's known for their exceptional customer service. This has been told to us many, many times. How have you built this trust and loyalty, chris? So share with our listeners.
Speaker 3:Sure, yeah, customer service is a huge part. Um, you know, inevitably there there will be issues, right? Uh, these products are made by human hands right here in Arkansas and, let's face it, they see some rough and tumble, wear and tear out in the field. Uh, by by and large, our stuff holds up really well all things considered. However, when there are issues, the only thing we are really great at, aside from building our lights, is the customer support on the other end. From day one, we've stood behind what we sent out the door. We really strive to provide a hassle-free customer service experience. To provide a hassle-free customer service experience. That's why you know first thing you do if you have an issue, just call our number. You're going to get a human being on the phone, not a menu. You're going to get a human that answers the phone and, you know, wants to take care of you. And you know that's all part of our commitment to providing a customer experience that you know we go above and beyond to get it handled All right.
Speaker 2:Well, chris, the next question I have for you is I know this has been a big one what role have partnerships and you spoke a little bit about it earlier when you mentioned Paul from Zips, and I know he's a phenomenal man in this industry but what? What role has partnerships and community involvement played in Tomeit's influence?
Speaker 3:Oh, I mean, it's immeasurable. You know it wasn't from day one, but, you know, eventually we were able to earn the trust of the industry and partnerships such as, you know, miller Industries, jaredan, nrc, ba Products, all of these and others no shade on those who I did not mention, there's just so many of you but it's been a huge impact on our ability to reach customers. These partnerships brought into play not just those companies but all of their resellers, you know.
Speaker 3:So that's really allowed more people to see and experience these amazing products man, that is awesome yeah, as far as community goes, uh, you know, going to the toe shows throughout the year, uh, that's been a major influence. I mean, it's like I said, it's a really grassroots story with how toe mate came to be so prevalent in the industry. Uh, and, and that's why we still attend every major toe show in the us, because there's something there you cannot get anywhere else and that is a lot of feedback directly from the people using your products good, bad or indifferent. You're going to get that information and it's up to you what you do with it. And I feel we've done a pretty good job of, you know, truly hearing what our customers have to say and adapting the products you know to truly fit their everyday needs.
Speaker 2:Man, I would say you have 100%. Well, we appreciate it, Chris. Well, DJ, you take the next one, sir you got it.
Speaker 1:Hey, chris, as we wrap up this and you've been a great guest on the podcast can you reflect on what this 40-year milestone means for Domate?
Speaker 3:Well, it's incredibly rewarding to continue a family legacy and contribute to American manufacturing. 40 years ago I was in the womb.
Speaker 3:I was in the womb. But I can tell you, you know the years that I've been cognizant and involved. You know it's incredible just how far we've come. You know, from waking up and you know the offices, downstairs, right next to production, downstairs, you downstairs while I'm making breakfast, upstairs Now, multiple buildings across some property where we're kind of like an anthill. But every building has a process. Every piece is part of the whole. It's truly remarkable as part of the whole and it's it's truly remarkable and it's it's, like I said, never been easy street, but it is a privilege and honor to be a part of it and carry on the legacy. And you know I I rest easy at night knowing that. You know we're, we're truly doing our part to to create a better and safer world, to create a better and safer world, Now all right.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I was going to say man, how can our listeners participate in this 40th?
Speaker 1:anniversary celebration. Hey, that's exactly what I was going to ask how can they participate?
Speaker 3:And also how can they get a hold of them. Absolutely so, um, we, we are going to be doing some, some neat things for the 40th anniversary. I would say, look for some swag, some 40th anniversary swag to start rolling out with the purchase of our tow lights. But also, what we really want to do, we want to hear from people, we want to hear testimonials, experiences that you guys have had with our products over the years, and especially testimonials that may have to do with Brian himself, my father.
Speaker 3:You know, if you have some cool stories that have to do with him and you know your experiences, did he fly down to you? Know your experiences? Did he fly down to you know, help you fix a problem? You know you're a tow company with one truck and we're having issues. I mean, these are the things he would do. He would, he would go out into this day. I mean, you know, but he would go out of his way to the great lakes to see to it that the customer was satisfied, and so I'd love to hear stories like that. Be with those families in California that have lost all and have lost loved ones. Help heal this nation. And be with our vendors. Help them grow their business, help them grow their knowledge base so they can bring more safety to our industry and more innovative products.
