Behind the Glow: How TowMate is Revolutionizing Roadside Safety

Darian Weaver

Four decades of lighting innovation comes to life in this illuminating conversation with Chris Anderson, Executive Vice President of TowMate. As the company celebrates its 40th anniversary, Anderson reveals how customer feedback drives their continuous product evolution and shapes their roadmap for the future.

The spotlight falls on TowMate's newest creation—the GlowMate series, a next-generation heavy-duty wireless bar featuring Optronics Glowlight technology. This breakthrough product combines enhanced durability with a distinctive neon-like glow and side marker lights that double as turn signals. Even more impressive is their upcoming fully programmable overhead bar offering 360-degree coverage with amber, red, white, and blue lighting options, allowing users to create jurisdiction-specific configurations with a single versatile product.

Anderson details how manufacturing in Rogers, Arkansas provides TowMate with unmatched quality control and responsiveness. "Feedback at a show on Friday, we're back in the office Monday working on a solution," he explains, highlighting how American manufacturing enables the company to quickly address customer needs without waiting for overseas shipments.

Battery technology remains at the forefront of TowMate's innovation strategy. From Milwaukee/DeWalt compatibility to their extended runtime XR and XR Plus series offering up to 60 hours of use on a single charge, the company provides multiple solutions to meet every operational need. Their lithium replacements for traditional lead-acid batteries deliver years of service instead of months, dramatically reducing maintenance requirements.

Looking beyond vehicle lighting, TowMate is expanding into comprehensive roadside safety with perimeter warning systems, cone-mounted alerts, and Hi-Vis personal lighting that illuminates safety vests without blinding workers or motorists. These developments reflect the company's evolution from a lighting manufacturer to a complete roadside safety solutions provider.

For towers seeking firsthand experience with these innovations, TowMate will showcase their products at upcoming industry events including the Texas Tow Expo, Midwest Regional Tow Show, Tennessee Tow Show, and the Baltimore Tow Show. Discover how four decades of American innovation continues to light the way toward safer roads for towing professionals.

Speaker 1:

Welcome one and all to Toe Professional Podcast. This is your podcast. It's for the pros that have a need to know, that are on the go. This is truly the voice of the towing and recovery industry. I'm DJ Harrington, better known as the Toe Doctor. I'm your co-host, but the real host of this program is the president and publisher of Toe Professional Magazine, a very good friend of the industry and a dear friend of mine, Darren Weaver. Darren, how are you? This is an overcast day in Atlanta, so how's's it there in birmingham?

Speaker 2:

man, dj, you need to slide down here to birmingham. It is gorgeous uh, 75 degrees. And if my puppy dogs would have been quiet, we'd be doing this podcast from the patio instead of the satellite office upstairs. So it's a gorgeous day here. I'll try and push some your way, but, man, I tell you, it's always a great day when we can bring Chris Anderson back onto the podcast. And let me tell you the innovation that's going on at Towmate. Everything that's happening there, fast-paced. These guys continually dig in and look for the latest technology and things that will bring safety to the forefront. So, uh, dj, as you always say and it always comes true this is gonna be a good one I tell our listeners are probably tired hearing that saying did you?

Speaker 1:

always says this is gonna be going, but chris anderson's been on before and every time chris is on, he's on. He is just a great guy. I remember being up in baltimore and I'm with the guy one booth away from chris and tommy. So what happens? Chris comes out, I'm trying to tell this guy all involved in and I'm trying to get him encouraged and here Chris comes over and says hey Doc, how can I help? And all of a sudden Chris is selling the guy better than I did. He's a great guy, he's a great guy. So I'm glad and I'm glad he's back again. Should we, even though he's been on before, could Chris tell a little bit about himself, just for our new listeners? We've had so many new listeners, chris, since you won last that, if there is a way, you just letting them know a little bit about your background.

Speaker 3:

Sure, yeah, I'd be glad to. So hello all, I'm Chris Anderson, executive vice president of TowMate. We've been at it 40 years providing the the towing industry with wireless tow lights and other safety products. My father, brian Anderson, is the owner and inventor of wireless tow lights going back all the way to 1985. So, yep, and I've been here going on 16 years or 17 years, so pretty intimate knowledge of the industry and how things work and how our products are used on a daily basis. So that's a little bit about me.

Speaker 1:

Well, you're a good guy and I'm going to tell all our listeners every time Chris is on the podcast with Darren and I. It has been a great one, and Tomei, it's a great company, so welcome back to the show. You've been a leader in this space for decades and I know you have a lot going on, so tell us what's the latest thing going on, chris.

Speaker 3:

Well, hey, as always, thanks, Thanks for having me. It's always great to be here and yeah, I mean, you're absolutely right, we've been busy. You know, again, it's our 40th anniversary this year and so you know, over the past few months we've really been looking at things closely. We've rolled out several product improvements based on customer feedback and field testing. You know we're not one to kind of sit idly by and field testing we're not one to kind of sit idly by. If we're hearing things out in the field, getting reports back, we're going to address it.

Speaker 3:

So, that said, most notably, we have recently upgraded our wiring harnesses in our heavy-duty light bars. I'm talking better sealing of the wire connectors. You know heat, string connectors, strain relief, and you know those two things alone are huge improvements, especially for guys up north. You know Canada in particular, you know with the harsh winters and everything on the roads. So you know we've also enhanced the LED connections themselves. So everything stands up to vibration and harsh conditions and beyond that. You know we make our own handles in-house and we were having some issues of breakage there. So we've beefed up the material on those, as well as the handles that have the power adapter where it fits, the Milwaukee batteries and the DeWalt batteries. Those have been strengthened and also now feature a strap that helps secure those batteries. So you know, these are things where we acknowledge there were more failures than were acceptable in our eyes and things that we knew we could improve, and so so we did.

Speaker 1:

Gotcha, gotcha. Well, darren, I know you're going to ask him this one, so go ahead.

Speaker 2:

Yes, sir, biting at the bed over here. Well, chris, next one I have is first off, I just want to say that's the kind of fine-tuning people in the field really appreciate is when, when you've got most product manufacturers in the industry trying to shorten the length that their product lasts in the market so they can resell it, when you have customers, vendors in the market that are trying to make it last longer for the client, that's what really matters. So I got to ask you this Are there any totally new products coming out from this effort?

Speaker 3:

Well, yeah, as we kind of dug in and we're looking at this stuff, one of the biggest things that we're excited about is we're releasing a totally new heavy-duty wireless bar. It's going to be called the Glowmate series. It's a next-gen heavy-duty wireless bar. It's going to be called the Glowmate series. It's a next-gen heavy-duty wireless bar that integrates all those internal upgrades that I mentioned, but also we're going to be using different lights on it as well, the Optronics Glowlight series.

Speaker 3:

They make a great product. They stand behind their stuff with a lifetime warranty, just like we do, and it's got a great look. It's got kind of that soft glow ring around it for the running light mode, where it's almost kind of like neon. So it's a cool futuristic look, but those suckers are bright and dependable. The side marker lights on those bars are now also going to be acting as a turn signal as well, so you get kind of a little more awareness for motorists following you while you're hauling your load. So, yeah, that's going to be a big one. The Glomate series of heavy-duty bars are kind of something that came out of these efforts. Beyond that, we're putting the extended, extended runtime batteries in those systems, so it's just going to be a cleaner, more modern bar for today's roadside environments.

Speaker 2:

So that is fantastic, chris. I mean DJ, these guys are always digging in, always looking for the next thing that can just provide more safety and and project more for our, our toe professionals. So give it a. I gotta give you a hand, chris, dj, you're next brother.

Speaker 1:

I want to tease Chris's glow mate by toe mate. That's right, all right.

Speaker 3:

So here's the guy.

Speaker 1:

Hey, chris, it was my personality, I know, so let me ask this, because our listeners are sitting there saying, okay, now we got GlowMate. It sounds like it's a solid step forward. Is it compatible with the normal standard, you know, mounting and charging systems that we already have now?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, yeah well, absolutely Everything stays pretty familiar in terms of function. We just made it better. So you know, if you're already running Tome8 gear, it's not going to be a great departure from the norm in terms of you know how you store it, how you charge it or how you mount it. It's just going to drop right into your setup without any surprises.

Speaker 1:

Perfect. Well, that makes sense. So, Darren, you follow up with the next one man, yeah, my next one.

Speaker 2:

I've. We got to keep digging then. So I've got to know now, um, I've also heard, uh some, that there's a pretty wild overhead bar that's coming down the pipeline. So, uh, what's the story there?

Speaker 3:

well, you know I I think I've been dropping little crumbs along the way, as you know, each time I've been on. It's been a long time in development and there's still some I'm going to hold back. But that is another one that we're fired up about. It's a fully programmable overhead bar that features actually four colors all the way around. It's got amber, red, white and blue, 360 degrees, so you can assign flash patterns, color profiles, change colors by zone, configure it for towing, dot construction. We'll have law enforcement bars available with this technology. Whatever your application is, one model fits a ton of needs and you know that that's something our fleet partners have really been asking for, as well as you know our the tow truck dealerships, where they're selling across state lines, and you know one guy's got to have uh, red and blue when they're stationary on the road. You know the other can't run blue and there's in their town, uh, you know. So this is one bar that we'll be able to address pretty well the full gamut of requirements and regulations around the country.

Speaker 2:

Man, that is fantastic. Well, as you say, necessity always builds ingenuity and moves to better products in the market, and Tomei has always been one of those to do so. Well, listeners, hey, hang in there. We're going to hear from one of our great sponsors and we'll be back in a moment with more fantastic information from Vice President of TowMate, Chris Anderson. Be back in just a moment.

Speaker 1:

Welcome back listeners. Of course, we have our guest back on again, chris Anderson from TomeMate. But before we listen to him, I want to remind all of you that we are available and I want you to download and listen. We're available on Spotify, itunes, pandora, stitcher, iheartmedia, amazon or wherever you get your podcast and we are talking to. You know, even though Chris has been there 17 years, his dad started it over 40 years ago. This is their 40th anniversary going on right now. So, darren, let me ask the next question. Sounds like you focused on a lot of new innovations, but flexibility is also a big part of it. So do this, chris Explain to our listeners a little bit about the innovations, but the flexibility that's also there with TowMate.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, well, you know every fleet is different and you know we're kind of the mindset where you know we want our products to adapt to your world, not the other way around, right?

Speaker 3:

So you know, we see that there's, you know, different needs in different industries, different needs. You know, from state to state, a lot of times you know county to county, county to county, and so what we are, what our aim is. You know, try to try to get as much of that you know, in, in with the product as possible. So, a, you know our, our dealers, aren't having to stock, you know, 20 different products for one use in different places. But you know, b, just so that it's it's user-friendly. You know wherever they are, and, and in some cases you know you might have a guy that's got a product that he uses for work but then, you know, wants to use it for a recreational application or something you know. And so we we try to design our products with these things in mind. And you know we're not, we're never going to be everything to everyone, but you know we'd sure like to try.

Speaker 1:

And now, darren, before I pass it over to you, I'm sitting here wondering because I'm thinking if all our listeners are listening to Chris. And he's a great guy. I love his personality, I like him as a person individually. But a lot of times you buy a bar from Tomeid and you go to sell a piece of equipment later and the guy who's buying it is different county, different state and all of a sudden he's going to say, well, that bar won't fit him, it doesn't go in my county. Well, this one does, because he can actually reinvent it and set it up for his county. So this is an investment in Tomeit. It's really an investment in the future. This is really a great. You know, darren, this was good getting Chris on here, so I'll pass it on over to you. I think it's great.

Speaker 2:

Man. I tell you, DJ, we try and have him on every couple of months, but we might have to move that up. They're moving so fast on technology, but we might have to move that up. They're moving so fast on technology, we might have to move it up to keep up with them. But let's see here I want to ask this besides Tome8.com the website there where can people check this stuff out in person? Chris?

Speaker 3:

Sure, well, you know, obviously you know your local dealers. If you go to Tome8.com slash dealers you can find you know your local guys that carry our products. But we also have a full slate of tow shows coming up. Still, you know we're halfway through the year but you know you'll find us at the Texas Tow Expo at the end of June. We'll also have some folks at the Midwest Regional Toe Show in Ohio in September, tennessee Toe Show in October and possibly even up at the Ontario show up there in Canada and, of course, finally in Baltimore. So we'll have the Glow Mate.

Speaker 3:

We'll have at least a demo version of the configurable bar Closer here within a couple months. That bar should be ready for the market. So we're just waiting for a couple of parts. But you'll be able to get a glimpse, a first glance at it at these shows and you know, purchase before the end of the year and we'll have some other gear on display too. So you know the main thing is going to these shows. We love talking with the towers directly, seeing what's working and what they still need, and that's the type of feedback that's invaluable and that's the type of feedback that enables us to drive forward and continue to remain relevant and at the leading edge.

Speaker 1:

Well, I'm kind of glad, Darren, that he said the Midwest Regional Toe Show up in Ohio. The reason being is Darren and I will be there All right, and I do think Chris is one of the finest family friendly shows of the year.

Speaker 3:

Well, I appreciate that, doc. You know you're. You're a good guy yourself. I always enjoy a chance to ham it up with you.

Speaker 1:

Well, you're a good guy and I started thinking about it, okay, so let me ask this question of you, chris. Let's shift gears just for a bit. You mentioned fleet setups earlier. How is PowerLink helping streamline those installs?

Speaker 3:

Well, yeah, I appreciate you asking that. You know, powerlink, of course, is kind of the backbone of our more advanced warning light systems. It's a technology we developed where we send information over a power wire. So what that amounts to is a huge time saver. It lets you control all the lights overhead bars, strobes, arrows, work lights all through the factory wiring harness. In many cases, you know, you don't have to drill, splice or run new wires in most instances. Instead, you know, we have plug and play marker lights or stop tail turn lights that plug into your factory harness and then they can be set up to, you know, activate as a strobe, as a work light, you know, and with different commands too. So you can just really completely customize a truck with that technology. But you know it. So it makes it clean, reliable and incredibly efficient. You know, not only the upfitters love it because it cuts install time, but the operators love it because it's just dead simple to use gotcha, which is great for our listeners, that's for sure.

Speaker 2:

Man, I've got one. Well, Chris, I tell you you know, speaking of it there, batteries are one thing. That that our listeners always ask about. The folks at the toe shows that, how long they last and perform with all the platforms out there. How are you handling the compatibility there in the?

Speaker 3:

market. Of course it's something that's at the top of our mind too. The longevity and the reliability for 35 years. Maybe we've been doing lithiums longer than that, at least 30 years. It was strictly lead-acid batteries, much like a car battery, old, faithful, but you're going to look at replacing it every one to two years. So we currently still offer those, especially in the base models, but we are working on phasing out the lead-acid.

Speaker 3:

So as far as compatibility, we have, you know, we have our heavy duty bars, we have options, the MDW series that it stands for Milwaukee DeWalt. It's compatible with both, and so you can, you know, avoid having to mess with internal batteries and just use the batteries you've already got in your toolbox. You know so. But we are also continuing to improve the internal battery options as well. Our xr and xr plus series of heavy duty light bars are kind of the gold standard for these types of systems. With the internal batteries, uh, the the xr series runs the bar, you know, over 24 hours, uh. With a 6 000 milliamp uh internal battery, the xr plus is twice that. Uh, and you know, over 24 hours. With a 6,000 milliamp internal battery, the XR Plus is twice that. And you know, somehow the runtime even grows more than twofold. You know you get like 60 hours of use on a charge. But you know the goal is to give towers the flexibility to use the gear they already have, whether that's, you know, stuff that's on the truck or in the toolbox, they already have. Whether that's, you know, stuff that's on the truck or in the toolbox. So with that you know that in mind, we offer upgrades as well. So you know, if you've got a lead acid bar, you can upgrade it to the Milwaukee DeWalt version or you can upgrade it to the XR or XR Plus series and increase your performance and reliability on those bars. And increase your performance and reliability on those bars.

Speaker 3:

That said, it's not just limited to heavy-duty either. So more on the battery stuff. We've got an awesome one-to-one replacement available for the lead-acid batteries in the light-duty lights too. So literally you're changing that battery out every one to two years. It's at least $30 to do it. Well, for about $100, you can grab one of these lithium ones and it just plugs in, just like the lead acid did. You use your same charger, but it'll run the bar over 60 hours of use on a single charge and theoretically, on paper, lithium can last up to 10 years, but you're certainly going to get several years out of it. They're warrantied for a full year, uh, etc. But uh, yeah, I mean we're. We're definitely pushing forward with new battery technologies, more compatibility and more integrations man, that's fantastic, chris.

Speaker 2:

It sounds like across the platform, whether somebody buys a base light or the xr, the xr plus series, you've got something to fit every need. And you've got something. If they want to keep the product they started with, they can upgrade that thing and move forward with it. So, man, that's right. Well, listeners, stay tuned. We're going to take a quick break here from one of our great sponsors and we'll be back in just a moment with more knowledge from Vice President of Towmate Chris Anderson. Hang in there, we'll be right back.

So if you ever need any assistance, you just reach out to them.

Speaker 1:

I cannot tell you how many listeners have told us at shows that one of the reasons they love TowMate is because of customer service. So let me ask this of my dear friend Chris. Let me ask this of my dear friend chris you're one of the few manufacturers still doing everything right here in the good us of a. Why is that so important to you? I know it is to me and darren, but, uh, if a proper english would be right, chuck, uh, darren and I instead, and then I yeah and just in case my school teacher is listening to this podcast, she's going to say okay, there, told doctor, say it the right way, darren and I.

Speaker 1:

Why is it being? You know? Why is it important to you guys to do it right here in the good USA?

Speaker 3:

Well, from the very start. You know it's been established, it's who we are Manufacturing here in Rogers, arkansas gives us control over quality and the ability to respond quickly to what the market needs. Feedback at a show, you know, on a Friday, we're back in the office on a Monday working on a solution. You know, if something needs tweaking, we're not waiting on overseas shipping, we walk to the floor and fix it. Plus, it supports American jobs and keeps us close to the customer. You know we've got, you know, 50 plus full-time employees, that's 50 families here stateside that are able to support their families, and if a customer needs something, we're able to ship it from here quickly, and so all that kind of goes into that answer. It's who we are, it's in our DNA.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that's a good answer. It's in his DNA and it is you're in your dad. It's in your DNA. I know that.

Speaker 2:

All right, darren, yes, sir. Well, one last thing, chris. I gotta ask. Since you always are good at dropping breadcrumbs, I got to poke around here a little bit. Are you expanding beyond the lights at all?

Speaker 3:

That's a good question. You know we do have some products that don't so much revolve around lighting. Our personal safety device system, well, it's the safety alert system. It's a roadside safety device where you've got, you know, a trip hose, so it's like a perimeter warning, so if somebody's entering the work site it sends a signal to any number of devices to warn the operators on site. But you know, most everything we do is lighting related. That said, we're looking more and more at total roadside safety and not just vehicle lighting. So you know, to elaborate, that would include, like our cone mounted alert systems, personal lighting for workers, like our Hinvi lights that you know that they're not bright to look at but when they hit the high-vis gear, you know your safety vest, it lights you up like a beacon, making you visible to motorists and your crew. You know we have those both as vehicle-mounted or as portable rechargeable systems. Um and uh.

Speaker 2:

So you know we've got a few other prototypes out now that we're working closely with DOTs and contractors to develop, you know, gear that really meets those evolving needs too. Man, that is fantastic. They're all always on the ground, always looking to uh cover ground and uh make sure they meet the needs, especially when it comes to safety, and we appreciate that commitment there, chris. Well, dj, leaving it to you, brother.

Speaker 1:

All right. So, Chris, this is, first of all. This has been a great update. I can't thank you enough for coming on the podcast. Anything, since this is the last segment, is there anything you'd like to leave with our listeners? And I know one thing I want to know is we have a lot of new listeners. How do they get a hold of you? What's the best way if they need to touch base with you and then follow up with you? But what? What's what you'd like to leave with our listeners?

Speaker 3:

well, yeah, first of all, thank you again for having me. It's always a pleasure talking with you guys and you know being having a platform to you know, another platform to be able to get some messaging out to our customers. Let them know that we're we're listening to them and, uh, you know, hopefully they're, they're hearing uh, that and and hearing the things that you know we're talking about here, where you know we're making product improvements. We acknowledge, you know, some of the things that haven't always been up to snuff and you know, for one reason or another, you know we had some issues where, you know, the wrong crimp tool was being used for a period of time and, you know, caused a number of failures.

Speaker 3:

So now we've got, you know, the new harnesses in these bars. They're built to be bulletproof. Um, you know, after 40 years at this, uh, the biggest thing is just a big thank you to our customers and our dealers. Um, you know, tomeit doesn't improve in a vacuum. Uh, we improve because towers tell us what they need. So you know we're listening, we're building and, uh, we'll see you at the shows.

Speaker 1:

You are something else, man. I love it. I love it. He's always a good guest, Darren. He's always a good guest.

Speaker 2:

Man. He's always well-versed, uh, stocked with knowledge and ready to go. So you got to love it. Well, listeners, remember towmatecom forward slash dealers. You can go there, see the products, find what works for you. Always remember, right there, page one, your first right-hand read Tow Professional Magazine. You'll see them standing tall. You'll see a lot of the things that they're advancing with in the market showcased right here, issue by issue in the publication and as new products and innovation come out, we have a section right in the front, industry news. You'll find the press right there, from Chris and Brian as well, talking about the latest products to hit the market.

Speaker 2:

But, as always, I want to end this with a prayer and I'll start with saying dear Heavenly Father, we just thank you for your blessings. We thank you for having a hand on this market. We ask you, father, to keep a hand over and a hedge of protection around. Not only our vendors, our first responders help increase their knowledge, help increase their ability to bring products that promote safety in this market and also increase the knowledge, wisdom, ability and wealth and just the feelings of serving and purpose that our toe professionals receive out there in the market. We appreciate their service and, father, we ask you bring them home safe every time. Amen.
