Smart Cameras Are Changing How Towing Companies Protect Drivers and Profits
The future of towing fleet safety has arrived, and it's smarter than you might expect. Tim Smith, Senior Fleet Solution Specialist at Azuga, joins the Tow Professional Podcast to unveil game-changing technology that's revolutionizing how towing companies protect their drivers, vehicles, and bottom line.
At the center of this revolution is Azuga's new SafetyCam Pro system, designed specifically for towing operations with support for up to four auxiliary cameras that can monitor every angle of a tow truck. The AI capabilities are nothing short of remarkable – detecting when drivers text, eat, or even start falling asleep. "If you're starting to fall asleep, the speakers inside will start blaring and say, 'Hey, pull over, pull over, you're asleep,'" Smith explains, highlighting how this technology goes beyond simply recording incidents to actively preventing them.
The integration with Coast fuel cards adds another layer of protection for tow company owners. These specialized Visa cards can be programmed to allow only specific purchases, and they work with GPS tracking to prevent a common industry problem – drivers filling personal vehicles on company time. "If they pull up to a gas pump and pull their wife's car right beside where theirs is and turn around and fill up their wife's vehicle with gas, the card actually knows it's not being pumped into the vehicle that's supposed to be filled up and it'll shut down the card," Smith reveals.
Perhaps most valuable to towing companies is how these technologies impact insurance costs. Beyond potential premium discounts, the real savings come from reducing claims and fighting fraudulent ones. Azuga's accident reconstruction capabilities overlay video footage with detailed data on speed, G-forces, and more, giving companies powerful evidence when disputes arise. Combined with their Driver Rewards Program that incentivizes safe behavior rather than punishing mistakes, it's a comprehensive approach to fleet safety that addresses the industry's biggest challenges.

Welcome one and all to the Tow Professional Podcast. Remember, this is your podcast. It's for the pros that have a need to know and that are on the go. This is truly the voice of the towing and recovery industry. I'm DJ Harrington, your co-host, better known as the Toe Doctor, and the real man and the real host of the program is the president and publisher of Toe Professional Magazine, a good friend of the industry, a dear friend of mine, darren Weaver. How are you this beautiful day?
Speaker 2:Man, I am fantastic, DJ. I think this is the first day in Birmingham we haven't got 17 inches of rain, so it's a great day and it's giving the frogs a break. And, man, I'm going to tell you, this is going to be a great podcast. As always, we get to bring Tim Smith back on with Azuga and let me tell you his look at the products that are coming out. The latest innovation that they've been doing is phenomenal, so this is going to be a great one. Listeners, we have Tim Smith, like I said, senior fleet solution specialist here, so, man, it's going to be great.
Speaker 1:I agree with you. Tim has been a great guest in the past a good friend of ours, that's for sure and every time he's on he's always giving us a good update on Azuga.
Speaker 2:Man, I've been waiting on this first question, brother, I've got one that's a little off script, but I've got to know what's happening, because I know it's affected him for the last year. So what's new with the house, tim? And did you all get back in yet, you and the family?
Speaker 3:Yeah, man, so as of a week and a half ago, we are now back in our residence. So, for, it's been a, it was a year and a day, so so May, so May 27th was one year since the house destroyed, and so we've been, we've been building it out, we're, we're back in, and besides for, uh, my wife yelling at me because I'm, my clothes are on the floor, uh, we're, we're, we're slowly, we're slowly getting back to uh, to normal, for, uh, whatever normal is.
Speaker 2:I mean, hey, that's. It goes same way in my house. Mine are, because they're on the floor out on the patio or somewhere else throughout the residence. I get it, man, I tell you any of the clients out there that are clients of Tim that didn't know this was going on, you can see how much it goes over and above to make things happen in the midst of his world being upside down. But we're certainly happy here to know you back in. You can rest your feet and have a place for home base and back at it again. Well, dj, it's up to you now, brother.
Speaker 1:All right, I'm going to ask a normal question. He's a good friend, so I'll ask this one. Okay, he's a good friend, so I'll ask this one. Okay, we have been hearing a lot about, and I want to ask you to tell our guests and our listeners about, the new safety cam pro.
Speaker 3:yeah, um, so I think we talked about it last time I was on. I think it was so new I couldn't even talk about it. So I kind of brought it up and uh that there was something new coming and I couldn't even really let the cat out of the bag. But as of April 28, we introduced the SafetyCam Pro and the SafetyCam Plus, which are two different camera systems. Both of them have so much AI it's crazy in them and, uh, the difference between the two is the plus is more of a one-off camera. So if you don't need auxiliary cameras and you just want a, an inexpensive way to put a high def, high res you know ai camera in there, you can. And then the Safety Cam Pro is more designed for towing. It allows you up to four auxiliary cameras, so you can put one on the light bar, one on each side and one on the wheel lift, if you want, and just get every side of it and have it up and running.
Speaker 3:And have it up and running, the, the kind of the new features that are on this thing are are awesome. So the, the main, I mean in the picture itself it's it's 1080p now. So the quality of the camera. Just go, walk into Walmart and look at some of the pretty, some of the pretty pictures you see on the TVs, and that's about what it looks like. It's spectacular, the view is constant, the flow is steady. There's no like broken up, digitized. Look inside the camera and then the AI I mean inside of it, this thing, the forward-facing camera now will catch tailgating, rolling through stop signs. It'll, even if there's a frontal collision warning even though you don't have that in the truck if it sees where there was almost a frontal collision and there wasn't one, it'll still take a picture and still take a video and save it inside the system. So it gives you a. It gives you an unbelievable look at everything that's going on.
Speaker 3:The, the inside camera my gosh, I mean the. It kind of does what some of the last features had done as far as you know eating, drinking, smoking, texting, looking out the window too long at a pretty girl, you know, putting your eyes on the radio, any of that stuff. But now I mean it's even got stuff that if you're starting to fall asleep, the speakers inside of there will start blurring and talking to you. It'll start blaring and say, hey, pull over, pull over, you're asleep, pull over and it'll warn them so they can get off the road. So super, super smart cameras the installation is crazy easy and it's a wired connection, which we found out especially inside the towing market. A wired connection, while it's a little bit more installation that takes place and a little bit harder to do, it's more secure and you don't lose data. And the problem you get when you depend on a Bluetooth connection is if something gets in the middle of that Bluetooth connection. You've lost your signal and that makes it impossible to recover.
Speaker 1:All right, darren, before I pass it over to you, let me ask you a question. I have a dear friend who is really interested to seeing if his people are texting and so forth while they're driving. They had a severe accident they hit a guy on a motorcycle, so he is real strict about it. Which one would you recommend, the safety camp pro or the safety camp plus, for that guy who wants to see the interior, if the guy's texting so both of them will do that portion.
Speaker 3:Both of them will do that. The question becomes do you ever want to add auxiliary cameras? So if the answer is no, I'll never really want to add on an additional camera to go on the back or the rear, like for a service truck or something like that. You can put on the Plus and it'll work fine. If it's a personal vehicle or a sales vehicle that's going out and doing calls and you want to put something in there, I would say the Plus would be plenty. I would say the plus would be plenty. The pro is really for anybody that at any time in the future would want to add an auxiliary camera, you'll want to go ahead and do the pro because to swap it out there's just no reason to have to do that.
Speaker 2:I tell you, dj, I think that's a great idea on what Tim was talking about, especially with the Safety Cam Plus, because even if you're a smaller company and like any business owner, you're planning on growth. You're planning on growing the business. Those are things that you're going to want to add on as you go and that just gives you the ability to plug it in and move forward rather than having to put a new system in there. So I like what is like what azuka's done with that. Well, tim, the next question I got for you is is tell me what the feedback's been so far on the product and has there been any negative feedback? I know that's a loaded question. I know we all get it.
Speaker 3:Let's not talk about mine, but Well, I was just going to ask you if you're growing your hair back out. Oh well, I thought about that in 1984.
Speaker 2:And since then it's been something that's never come to a hand or mine.
Speaker 1:See, only dear friends can ask you questions like that.
Speaker 3:Love it. So you know it's funny, it's only been out for a little while. So it's only been out for, you know, six weeks or so. So some people are just now getting installed. And yeah, we've. I mean, listen, it doesn't matter what it is. Uh, darren, you were with me. We started a, a magazine that we had the greatest idea in the world and started it, and you know, you know, six months later it looked completely different from what we started with. And so it's just unfortunately, it's the way of the world, because you don't know what you don't know until you do it. But the initial feedback has been awesome. The quality of the camera is great. We hadn't had any issues related to that.
Speaker 3:The installation getting the, you know, getting the thing, the rear cameras mounted and getting them installed. You know, it's just different. You know it's a little more. It's a little more installation. The good part is there's no wiring involved, right? So there's literally a wire and I don't know if you can see this, but I'll show it to you guys on here. It's almost like a coax cable, so it pops up and screws and you screw it together. The other cable is super thick, it's this big, but it's easy to kind of feed through that runway underneath and the challenge just comes getting that, getting them together. Now, the good part is you'll never have to wire it again.
Speaker 3:So if this camera breaks or if one of these other auxiliary camera breaks, you know you can disconnect it without having to rewire and rerun something through the cable tray, because the wire is already in there. So all they got to do is disconnect one and connect another. So if somebody hits it with a J hook or you know, something crazy happens, it gets into an accident or something you need to replace it. You don't have to rewire everything but the initial wiring. You know getting it through there. Yeah, you've had some complaints to some people that you know that that on that side of it. But now that the camera's been reception's been awesome to the new camera. The tech on it's just better when you hold it in your hand even our other one, that was good. You hold the two in your hand, you can just feel the difference in the product. You know it's awesome, it's a really good product.
Speaker 2:Well and I think, tim, for you know most of the market I'd say what? Maybe 85% of the towers out there, they work on their own stuff. So, generally, when it comes to you know, if it was even crimping a wire, most of them would have that handle. But yours is even simpler than that. It's just put them together and just screw the fitting together. So I would I'd say the majority of them can tackle this pretty simple.
Speaker 3:Oh, listen, I would say, and you know, and I made the comparison the other day I once had a VCR inside my living room that blinked 12 o'clock for about six years because I couldn't figure out how to set the clock. But I can wire one of these things up in about 15 minutes. So it's not, it's not super difficult Most difficult parts probably taking apart the dash to hot, to stashing it away somewhere. But it's, it's, it's pretty easy. And you know I'm not the most technical soul in the world.
Speaker 2:So yes, sir, I'll agree. Yes, sir, listeners. Hey, as I told you, this is going to be an information field and a fun podcast. So, guys, we're going to take a break here from some of our great sponsors. We'll be back in just a moment with more of Tim Smith, the Senior Fleet Solutions Specialist for Azuga, so hang in there, We'll be right back.

Speaker 1:Welcome back listeners. You know you're listening to Toe Professional On the Go podcast and Tim Smith from Mazuga is doing a great job. I want to remind everyone Darren and I do our best every week to bring you an informative episode like we're having right now with Tim. Make sure you download and listen. We're available on Spotify, itunes, pandora, stitcher, iheartmedia, amazon or wherever you get your podcasts. So, tim, since I know you pretty well not as well as our dear friend Darren but here's what I want to ask how does the cameras affect your partners in this market?
Speaker 3:Yeah, so we've got a variety of different partners that we work with and we refer to them. The main partners I deal with are called referral partners, so they're not partners partners in the sense where we're sharing revenue or anything like that but I mean guys that we work closely with that. We have an integration with that, we work with to help each other, but we work with. You know, obviously Tobook is a huge one for us and we work closely with Dan and his team and working to continue to build that out to where Toebook can add benefits and things that are going to help them and their customers even get more information in and on our half. You know Toebook's got a bunch of great customers and so we try to work together in order to deliver for them. And then you know Haas Alert is one of our safety partners. Those guys obviously do a product that does alert and you know they want to alert people while tow trucks are on the roadside and we've worked with them for a long time and we've got an integration to where, if you have our hardware inside your truck, you don't have to have their hardware. So the only thing you've got to do is have a subscription with Haas. Typically, when you're using us, they even give you a discount on that. So really good partner.
Speaker 3:And then we've got several in the insurance industry you know we work with I mean a lot of the big ones that are out there, the Philadelphia insurances and a lot of the big underwriters that are out there, but also when it comes to the brokers, five Star Insurance, which you'll see at a lot of these trade shows those guys are a partner Zellner Insurance, marshall and Sterling Insurance. These are all guys that we work with closely to help them. You know, first of all, where they can give better rates, where people can lower their premiums by using the cameras and getting better at how they deal with claims, but also in some cases that people that can't get written because they have too many claims. We can even work with them in order to give the company access which allows them to get even some of the most hard cases written where they might not be able to get written other ways. So really cool partnerships that we work with a lot. And we've got several more that were work that we're in the process of kind of launching at the same time.
Speaker 3:And then we've got a new partner you know we integrate with almost every major fuel card that's out there, and one of the new ones that we've been working with over the last year, which is just they've been really cool to work with, is a company called Coast C-O-A-S-T. And Coast is, you know, they're an integration partner and, darren, you would love it. They remind me of me when I was young. They're just a young, hungry group of guys that have a great idea and, boy, they are hustling, they're out there getting after it and they're working to kind of bring more data and more information to us.
Speaker 3:And they asked us when they came in hey, what information can we give to you that's going to help you be more beneficial to your users, something nobody else is doing, right? What a great question to ask when you're integrating with a whole bunch of different GPS is what can we deliver to you that's going to make you better, right? So it's been really cool. But, yeah, you know our partners in this market. We love, you know we deal with, you know, as I've been around it for a long time, so I've got a lot of different friends and people that we work with in different ways, from Coast to Santander to whoever. But yeah, so the partners in this market, including now Coast, have really been good.
Speaker 2:All right. Well, Tim, let me ask you this. You were just talking about Coast and telling us a little bit about who they are. I know what our listeners are wondering right now is how does that benefit the Azuga customers? So let's stay on that one a little longer. Tell me how that works out.
Speaker 3:Yeah, no worries. So Coast is, they're a fuel card company and they've really taken a different spin on it than some of the other guys. So the way it works is, instead of you having a fuel card that you give out to everybody else and you can go into a specific vehicle or a specific place and buy fuel and go, these cards are like visa cards, so they're individual visa cards that you can give your drivers, you can give to the people that are out there that are your managers or what have you, and inside those cards you can actually even specify and say hey, they can only buy fuel and coffee, right, or fuel and snacks, or fuel right, and nothing else with the the card. So if they go in and try to buy a snack or a thing, it'll shut them down. It's also uses our gps. So in the event which, believe it or not, happens more than you think in the event they pull up to a gas pump and pull their wife's car right beside where theirs is and turns around and pump and pull their wife's car right beside where theirs is and turns around and fills up their wife's vehicle with gas, the card actually knows that it's not being pumped into the vehicle that's being filled up and it'll shut down the card. Really really cool stuff that they do but it uses.
Speaker 3:We kind of share information back and forth, but where they really help us is they give us all the fuel information. They give us the amount of gallons that are put in, fuel mileage, the cost of the actual expense of the fuel. And the way that works with Azuga customers is right now, if you're using the system and you're using the maintenance right, and you're updating every single maintenance activity, whether it's preventative maintenance or whether it's ongoing maintenance, it asks you every single time to put in the cost whether it's by the job or whether it's by parts and upload receipts. So you know what every single maintenance activity is and the cost on every single maintenance activity. Now you know what every single fuel, every single dollar of fuel that's put into every single truck. So, besides for your employment costs, you know exactly how much it's costing you to operate every single vehicle in your fleet every day, right, and it's all inside the same system and all that data is in there together and that system is doing nothing but growing. So we're working with Coast.
Speaker 3:To me their product is better, it's just superior to the other ones that we've worked with in the past. Their willingness to integrate and to pull in more information is better. This is going to help with state mileage reports, ifta reports. This is going to help with their understanding of what each vehicle is costing to maintain and operate, and these are the things that you need to know when you're making decisions on do I want to sell a truck? Do I want to buy a truck? Do I need to do some other maintenance on the truck in order to get it in better shape? Because these money that's spent or wasted in this area comes right out of the owner's back pocket, right? So this is money they can put right back in. So it's really, really cool. They're the integration with them. I mean, we deal with most major fuel cards. I will say this the customers that we have that are using Coast are happier with the information that they're getting out of it, and it's it's bar none.
Speaker 2:It's. It's been really good. They're a good group. Well, tim, I've got to tell you, I mean you just, you just knock you're going to knock me over with a feather when you said that they could watch everything they're using on the card or set it to what they want it to be used for.
Speaker 2:Because the biggest bit of feedback I get from owners in the industry is you know, I'm having to give this guy my, my personal card and they you know nine out of 10 people are straight up with it. The other one, like you said, is filling up his wife's car. He buys something for the truck and gets a set of wiper blades for his car while he's at it and everything else. And that's one of the big struggles of giving a card to someone is all the money you lose on the backside of it by having to try and keep up with that. Secondly, what you're talking about with the fuel cost and it recording all that information, and the owner's been able to put that in the system from a gearhead. I'm just telling you that takes it from a 30,000 foot view to right there next to the vehicle, knowing what it's doing, and it helps you understand if this thing's out of its limit if somebody's overusing it, using it when they're not supposed to be using it, or something else, and all that does is put money back in your pocket.
Speaker 2:So well, I got to tell you this thing's got to be paying for itself, quite simply in the first, first month of the folks using it. So, as always, listeners, I told you he was going to be bringing the heat today. Well, let's do this, let's take a another quick break. We'll hear from our sponsors and we'll be right back with Tim Smith, senior Fleet Solutions Specialist at Azuga. So hang in there.

Without further ado, let me go back to our dear friend Tim Smith. Tim, I know you're going to. Well, let me just ask you are you going to the show in Texas at the end of the month?
Speaker 3:Yeah, absolutely. So we will be there in Texas, looking forward to it and seeing everybody there. Matter of fact, I think we're going to be, uh, uh, pretty close to the regular suspects. I think we're going to be, uh, matter of fact, I think coast is going to that show. We're going to be beside them there. So, um, yeah, absolutely, come by and see me. Uh, I will be there. We'll have the new cameras on display so we can talk a little bit about that and how we can work with you and, um, in any other things I might be able to help you with. So, look forward to seeing everybody there. And are you going to be able to go? Uh, dj or?
Speaker 1:no, I won't go to the texas one, but if you're, if you have influence on coast, the ohio, the midwest regional toe Coast, may like to be introduced to somebody who is the largest leasing company in North America.
Speaker 3:Yeah, no, that's yeah. Coast is they make their own call their own decisions. We just work together. But but for sure, the Ohio show. I'm glad to hear it's back at the Great Wolf Lodge. I was afraid I was never going to be able to use my wand again that I got there a couple of years back. And after seeing Darren and that thong going down the water slide in the middle, I thought if you've ever seen a spitball how it kind of works its way through a straw, it looks very similar.
Speaker 1:Oh, dear heavenly father, take the picture from my eyes.
Speaker 2:For the record, I've never been in the water there at Ohio folks.
Speaker 1:That's all you want to say about that.
Speaker 2:Oh, my goodness.
Speaker 1:That's what happens when you have dear friends on the podcast. They go overboard.
Speaker 2:Oh listen, he's's what happens when you have dear friends on the podcast. They go overboard. Oh listen, he's got me more times than one. We won't go into those stories. Well, let me ask you this, tim you touched on it a minute ago about how this helps the clients, and just my thoughts. Is it helping them with their insurance rates? Is it helping them with drivers that they might possibly would generally get rid of, but now they've been able to have something that would help that driver get better? Let you talk on that a minute, yeah no.
Speaker 3:So yes, on both accounts. So the insurance does two things right. Can you get a lower premium because you have cameras and stuff like that? Yeah, in some cases you definitely can. But the main thing is is, if you don't reduce your number of claims, it doesn't matter what kind of upfront benefit that you get. You're going to lose it in a couple of years when they renew it anyway.
Speaker 3:So the most beneficial way in order to reduce your insurance claims is to find a way to reduce your number of claims, and that comes in a couple different ways right, changing driver behavior. Right, understanding what's going on inside your vehicle, so if you've got a fraudulent claim, you can fight it. Right. And also knowing about what the claim is. So it might be something that you can settle quickly and get out of. To where you don't have to file it as an insurance claim. Right To keep your insurance clean. So, depending on what you're looking for, the best thing that you can do is utilize this system in order to help prevent claims, help reduce claims, help keep that to the minimum, because it's all about that. If you do a very good, if they do a good job for three years on your Accord app. When you go back through to file and you've limited or reduced your number of claims, the odds of your premiums going down are fantastic.
Speaker 3:The guy that's on the other end that works for these brokers. He doesn't want to charge you more. It doesn't benefit him at all. He wants to sell as many customers as possible and if he can find a way to do that, that's what he wants to do. So the reason they use us is because we work closely with them, not only to give them the information, but we've got systems for the insurer, called like accident claim reconciliation, so it'll basically redo the entire accident. So if there was an accident, not only will you have the video, it'll overlay the video, it'll overlay the GPS information how fast he was going, where the G-forces, what the G-force was when they hit. They'll show the other car coming on. They'll do a reconstruction of the entire accident that they can provide to the insurer. So when they go to fight the claim, they don't just have video, they have a full reconstruction of what took place. So that gives them a better chance to fight the thing, which is why we're the number one camera system right now working with these insurance companies, because when you work with them.
Speaker 3:Again, it's kind of like Coast did with me. We basically went to them and said, hey, what can we do to help you win more fights? What can we do for you? And so that's what we've done. I won't say we're the most, because I don't know what other people's situation is, but I've never worked with one and I've worked with a bunch. This is the most I've ever seen, and the way that we work with the insurance company definitely helps.
Speaker 3:Now, as far as the driver thing, we've got a program inside of our system that we use. It's called the Driver Rewards Program. So we've got a program inside of our system that we use. It's called the Driver Awards Program. In mine and yours dialect, it means using the carrot rather than the stick, right? So basically you're able, because it's constantly scoring your drivers.
Speaker 3:But this allows a way that you can like do a contest between the drivers, set it up for a week, say hey, it's a week, it's two weeks long. You put a couple hundred dollars in there that you upload into that by yourself. The system does everything else. It keeps track of how they're driving based on the criteria that you find important. So if you say, hey, I don't want harsh brakes, I don't want harsh acceleration, want them to stay off their phone and whatever else. It'll just grade on what you say, right, and whoever wins, it'll actually send them an email and say congratulations, you won the contest. Click here to claim your prize. Done so, it gives you the ability. It gives you the ability to to not only help the drivers, help the, help the, the, the insured, in order to do it, but also help the insurance company so you can lower the claims.
Speaker 2:Man. I love that, Tim, and I love the fact, like you said, it uses the carrot instead of the stick. So many times you use a stick, you lose a driver. They go on down the road, they're working for your competitor. You use the carrot, you get. You get a person, a man or woman that's going to stay with you long term. They have loyalty and they know that they matter because you're incentivizing them to stay. So that's huge. Well, hey, before we leave, before this is over and we wrap up, I just gotta ask if they want more information on azuga, tell them how they can get ahold of you or look at the products.
Speaker 3:Absolutely, you can go to azugacom. Of course, you can contact me directly on my cell phone. It's 205-728-9135, or you can send me an email at tims at azugacom.
Speaker 2:Awesome, brother. Hey, we certainly appreciate you coming on and let me say everybody that's going to be at the show next week, the 24th through the 26th American Toman Show in Dallas Make sure you stop by and see Tim and it sounds like it'd be a great idea for you to see his partner over there at Coast as well. That's very inventive, very informative and, believe me, I'm going to be visiting them as well. Not at the show, because there's only one publisher that's allowed at those shows and I'm not one of them, so I won't be there, folks, but we'll continue to bring great information to you and more great guests like Tim Smith, the Senior Fleet Solution Specialist for Azuga. Y'all know him, you've seen him out there. Stop by the booth and see his latest products.
