Why Towing Companies Grow When They Invest In Training
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Training is not just a compliance box for towing and recovery. It is the difference between a clean, controlled scene and a bad day that follows a driver home. We talk with Megan Bruns, Director of Towing Education and Certification for the American Towing and Recovery Institute (ATRI) and Director of Marketing for Cardinal Legacy Towing Group, about what real investment in people looks like when the work is dangerous and the vehicles keep changing.
We get into what ATRI is doing right now to make towing and recovery training easier to access and more effective, including refreshed course materials, more hands-on time, and smarter scheduling that helps drivers earn certifications faster. Megan also shares why leadership training for towing companies matters just as much as technical skills, especially for operators stepping into supervisor roles and for family businesses preparing the next generation. We also touch EV towing training and the practical safety knowledge operators need as electric vehicles become a normal part of the call list.
You will hear how Cardinal Legacy Towing Group approaches growth through consolidation while keeping local brands intact, and why pairing that strategy with consistent training can improve safety, professionalism, and retention. If you want better tow truck driver safety, stronger communication on the roadside, and a clearer path to developing future leaders, this conversation is for you. Subscribe for more industry interviews, share this with a tower who cares about doing it right, and leave a review with the training topic you want us to cover next.

SPEAKER_05Welcome, one and all. You are there. We are here. Uh so today, as always, uh we try and bring you the top guest in the industry when it comes to manufacturers, dealers, distributors, and service providers that are out there. And we've got it planned for you today. Uh, we've got Megan Burns today with Cardinal Legacy Towing and American Towing and Recovery Institute. And I'm gonna just welcome her to the show. And uh Megan, we're we're so glad to have you here today. And and certainly uh I tell you, we wanted to give you an opportunity with the with the towing uh recovery industry constantly evolving, new vehicles, new technology, new challenges every day, it seems like. And if we want the industry to keep moving forward, I know we have to invest in training. That's one of the key things. So uh so, Megan, I'm gonna open the mic up to you and uh tell us a little bit about yourself and uh the work you do there with Cardinal Legacy Towing and ATRI.
SPEAKER_00Perfect. Thank you so much for having me. It's a joy to be here. Uh Megan Bruins is my name, and I am the director of marketing for Cardinal Legacy Towing Group and also the director of towing education and certification for the American Towing and Recovery Institute. Uh, I actually didn't start in the towing world. I started in sales uh back in the next tell days, about 20, 20 years or so ago. Worked for a company called Metro Park in the St. Louis area, and they did B2B sales for all types of communications for every business of every size. And that's actually how I came to meet Kurt Barks as well as Jeff Bauer. They are the founders of the Cardinal Legacy Towing Group and the new owners of the American Towing and Recovery Institute. So, over a couple of years of working with them, uh our professional paths aligned. They decided to bring me on as their marketing director. And then last year, when uh we acquired the ATRI and the American Towing and Recovery Institute, that was when I acquired a second role. So here we are. Fresh year, 2026. We're really looking to make some differences.
SPEAKER_05And that is fantastic. And uh, I tell you, you were quick to pick up some uh multiple hats to wear there, weren't you? Uh that's that's awesome. I know I got to to meet you at the uh the Chattanooga show. And uh, listeners, as you can tell, I've already butchered her name right off the bat, and she was so sweet. That's okay. That's okay.
SPEAKER_00My maiden name was much more difficult. I thought I was making it easy with brunes, but that that certainly never happened, but that's okay.
SPEAKER_05Hey, well, if it helps, I always get called Darien. So you're welcome to anytime.
unknownThere you go.
SPEAKER_00That's what I always say.
SPEAKER_05I've been called worse.
SPEAKER_00Don't worry about it.
What ATRI Does For Operators
SPEAKER_05My mother missed those hooked on phonics tapes. So uh the way it was spelled is Darien all day long, but pronounced Darien. So hey, I get it. There you go. Um, well, let me ask you this. The next question I have is um I want to have you introduce ATRI's uh American Towing and Recovery Institute's role in the industry and and some of the key points what you guys are are doing out there for the men and women of tone.
SPEAKER_00Sure, sure. ATRI uh was founded by Wes Wilburn over a decade ago. We've got a nationwide presence that we're definitely looking to grow this year. Not that there was anything wrong with what what he had going on. Everything is great, but there's there's always new relationships, new ideas. Uh JT Reeser is actually our new lead instructor, and he's really taken the reins on everything. He's he's also one of our heavy-duty rotator drivers on a day-to-day basis. He's a supervisor over our St. Louis uh towing companies, and he's he's been doing ATRI classes back before ATRI was a thing. He worked with Wes uh with the recmaster training since he was 13 years old. So he he lives and breathes towing and and has longer than he hasn't, that's for sure. So we're we're definitely looking to uh make it make it a little bit more exciting. Uh we've we've revamped all of the presentation, same information. We've just made it a little bit more exciting. Uh we've added a couple of more classes, we've combined a couple of classes for some dual certifications so we can get the drivers trained, we can get them trained quicker and get them back on the road and and back to their their positions. Uh, because everybody knows it's not easy to lose those drivers to get the trainings, but you need the trainings to keep the drivers. So it's it's a little bit so we're we're really looking just uh just to make a couple of improvements and and get the word out there to as many people as we can.
Training Versus Turnover Mindset
SPEAKER_05Awesome, awesome. Well, I tell you, Megan, I know that what you're doing in the industry, you have a lot of people ask, say, Well, I don't know, what do you do about what if you train somebody and they leave? And I've always said, Well, what if you don't train them and they stay?
SPEAKER_00We say the same thing. That's amazing.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_05I think that's the worst thing that can happen. So you want them trained. And uh and when you're doing this process with your employees, you're also showing them uh that you're you're paying it forward towards their long term. Um that you that you not only want them safe, but you want them to have all the skills that can help them have a great future in the industry.
SPEAKER_00So absolutely. And and it's such a dangerous job, not giving them training. What what are we affording to to our companies? We're we're not trying to protect them at all. And and in addition to that, one of the classes that we have added are leadership classes that are specific to the towing industry um to be able to advance them professionally and personally. Uh it's it's a blanket thing. If they can grow personally, then then they're better for us at work. It also shows that we're gonna invest in them and hopefully their companies invest in them to where they can move up to those supervisory positions and and lead in a in a better way.
Class Calendar And Dual Certifications
SPEAKER_05Out of doubt. This this gets them started on the right foot and uh heads them in that direction. So and I I know the the trainings you offer, I know you're offering uh light duty uh towing and recovery, I know you're doing medium duty towing and recovery, and you actually have a light duty, medium duty um class combined coming up, what, May the 9th and 10th at Paddocks in Indiana? Um also I I think you've got a heavy duty um uh towing and recovery class that's April the 25th and 26th at Robert Young's Sales and Service in Roanoke, Virginia. And uh man, we certainly love Robert and uh and Chris and Beth and the crew over there, man. They are phenomenal people, been with us since day one.
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah, we work with them often.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, they're great. They are great. And I see you got an advanced rotator operations class. Uh it's a three-day advanced heavy duty class at the St. Louis location, May the 14th through 16th.
SPEAKER_00Yes, and that's gonna be a fun-filled week. We not only have a three-day advanced heavy duty course, but we're we're offering a light duty cloak uh course that'll start on Tuesday. We've got a leadership and an EV class that we're gonna have on Wednesday, and then touch on some medium uh duty on Thursday. So that whole week is gonna be full if you want to come to St. Louis and and really be able to take advantage on any and all of the classes. We've we've pieced them in a way where if you want light duty but you want to stay for the EV class and a little bit of leadership, then then you can do that. Or if you wanted to come for the EV and then stay for the medium and heavy, then it's kind of pocketed right there in the middle.
SPEAKER_05Man, that that is awesome. And and speaking of the EV class, you were talking about in the leadership classes, I know uh there's an electronic vehicle certification class uh looking into pairing this with the light duty class down there and at the Florida Toe Show on the uh April the 9th. Is that correct?
SPEAKER_00Yes, at the Toe Show, we're not gonna do the light duty, we're just gonna have an EV training in the morning. Yes, and that'll be on on Thursday, April 9th. Uh and then in the afternoon, we're gonna do a leadership training as well. And that is completely free. So if anybody's gonna be at the Florida Toe Show and they're they're gonna be available any of those times on Thursday, then we would love to have you.
Leadership Skills And Online Webinars
SPEAKER_05Okay, fantastic, fantastic. Well, well, listeners and our viewers on YouTube, I want you guys to go to amtow signup.org. That's just s-i-g-n-up.org. And that's where you can check and see all the upcoming classes that they're offering, find out and read more information about everything offered. And you've already perked my ear up when you said that about leadership classes. Um, because I know, Megan, when I got in this market, I'd I'd been in sales for ever since I was 14 years old. And uh I think I was 34 when I got in the market, and I was fantastic at sales, I tell you. Um, but uh I'd never run a business. I'd laid a publication out, I'd done different things, but I knew there was going to be a learning curve. And if I didn't get on that and start learning how to run all aspects of the business, that was gonna shorten my success in the industry. Um so I I take it it's uh the same way with with towing, where you've got somebody that's been in the truck all their life, maybe was sitting there in a booster seat going out with dad, right, and has now moved up through the ranks and now is taking ownership. Uh so tell us a little bit about that. Uh yeah, there's there's definitely that.
SPEAKER_00And you see that with all these mom and pop towing towing shops all over the place. You know, it's it's it's to the point where dad wants to retire, and and that's definitely an aspect of it. But we're looking, we're also looking at training our brand new drivers and giving them the skills to be able to move up through the ranks and and grow in a company and and get the supervisors uh jobs, get get the management jobs and and all of those leadership roles, or even if that's not what they're looking for, it's it's interacting with people, knowing how to talk to different people and different personalities and conflict resolution is is a big piece of things that we like to talk, talk about, especially since our our drivers are on the side of the road, these people aren't always in the best moods, and and you know, it's easy to just get quick instead of you know have the skills to be able to take a step back and and make them feel better and and not engage and you know, just all those different aspects. There's a lot of different, there's a lot of different pieces depending upon where we're going and who we're talking to that we we blend together. There's there's about 24 topics at the time that we're looking um to kind of piece together again, depending upon where we're going. But we're also hopefully going to get to the point here real soon where we're gonna have online webinars. That way, people don't necessarily have to take a whole day or three days out of their week to come and take advantage of that. Every other week we're looking to have something available. You can click online, view it for an hour, 45 minutes, go back to work. So, but still be able to capture those and then just do little segments as we go. So that's another piece of the of the 2026 wheel that we're really kind of trying to put together and and let everybody be able to take advantage of it.
Cardinal Legacy Towing Group Explained
SPEAKER_05And that's a that's a great idea. And the further things go with with AI and with the digital side, I mean, Toe Professional Magazine's been out here 15 years and two years ago, just because everybody pushing, we finally went to four of our issues being strictly digital. Um and I see the market going that way. I'm an old paper guy, but uh you know, if you go pick up a yellow pages, uh you you can't find one these days. Everything's all good. So uh they they kind of disappeared. The thing I thought would be around all the time. But uh well, let me ask you this. Uh you you were talking about your instructors. I was gonna give you a chance to, you said it was uh JT Reeser is the lead instructor for ATRI, uh a supervisor for STL towing companies as well as a heavy duty operator. I think you went over there, but I just want to make sure I didn't leave it out. Justin Thomas, instructor for ATRI, and he's a business development manager as a heavy duty operator in KC. And uh they both bring real world experience directly into the classroom training field over 40 years of towing experience. So guys, that's that that's phenomenal. And I tell you, certainly uh a place you guys need to go to the site, take a look at it, and see when you get your people there. Well, man, this is a lot of great information, Megan. Let me ask you this what is uh I I want to give you an opportunity to tell our listeners what is Cardinal Legacy Towing Group and and give you a minute to talk about that. Explain to them.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Cardinal Legacy Group is is the new parent company that has been created to oversee all of our other towing companies. So we we are definitely in full consolidation mode. Um the founder, again, Kurt Barks, and and the president of the company, Jeff Bauer, they've been working on on building up towing. We actually started uh with complete autobody and repair, uh, which those that piece of it uh we just sold off so that we could solely start focusing on on towing. So we started in 2014 with one towing company and a couple of trucks that that was A to B towing, which we do we do still own and operate here in St. Louis. Um but then Bolin Services was acquired, which has been around since 1954 here in St. Louis. It with Greg Bolin um and his father Mike created that, but we wanted to keep that logo and that legacy going. So that was the second logo that we had. And then um A towing services, that's been around since the 90s and 90s, and that uh was a partner with Cardinal all out all our legacy towing. Or I'm sorry, all our towing. So we had those four. We knew we were gonna keep growing. We got the couple out in uh Kansas City, which is Laser Toe, they've been around since the 90s, and then we just acquired Liberty Toe and Bald Eagle Towing, that's down in Naples, Florida. So, as the parent company to oversee all of those and keep the culture the same, keep keep all of the professionalism, everything going under one roof. That's where the Cardinal Legacy Towing Group was created. But all of our logos operate as if they were prior to us acquiring them. We didn't gobble them up and make them change anything. We really wanted to kind of just swim together in the same pool and be able to expand our footprint.
SPEAKER_05Man, that is that is fantastic. And and that's the way you you uh uh keep the integrity in the industry and and and grow the market and uh give people the resources to continue to serve others. So absolutely. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00Us all being able to join together gives our gives our drivers better benefits, better opportunities, and and they're really through they're really thriving on it. They love it.
SPEAKER_05Well, I'll tell you with the the leadership opportunities to get training there, uh the the training as soon as they start up. I mean, that just shows your employees that again, like I said, we're invested in your long term. And uh man, when you got a company doing that, those type things for you, it's hard to run somebody off.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely, absolutely, and they're loving that too. And and you're right, because as soon as we get our new hires, JT immediately puts them through the ATRI training that that they need to get out on the road to be safe and and be up to date. And then they're more than welcome as they move up, of course, to to take advantage of other ones too. But they get that right off the bat. That's 100% paid for by our company.

Why Cardinal Legacy Acquired ATRI
SPEAKER_05Welcome back, one and all, Darren Weaver Toe Professional Magazine and Podcast. We're here with Megan Burns of uh Cardinal Legacy Towing and ATRI. And uh you're here, we're there, and we just want to thank you for listening to Toe Professional Podcast. Every week we do our best to bring uh the greatest information, uh industry experts to the channel and to give you the information so you can get out of the red and stay in the black. So we're back, and I've got some more questions. We've got some more information coming at you. And I tell you, get your pen and pencil out because you want to write down this web address and you're gonna want to go check this out, start getting your folks enrolled. So uh, Megan, we're back. I I did want to ask you uh about the partnership between uh CLTG and ATRI, and and I want you to tell our listeners why this partnership makes so much sense.
SPEAKER_00Sure, sure. Well, we've had um a long partnership with ATRI as far as JT being an instructor with Wes and for many, many years kind of following that road and and us having so many employees, we we were sending them to the training as well. There's not a a whole lot of other uh other options as far as training goes. There is a little bit more competition now, but we we had that strong partnership. So uh when Wes was looking to start paving the way for him to be able to retire, uh that was when we were approached and and him and Kurt worked out a great deal because he was really looking for JT to be able to continue on his legacy with the great company that that he spent so much blood, sweat, and tears trying to build up over the years, and and it's got such a great reputation. There was no way that we could pass that up. And and with our strong belief in training, it it just made sense for that to be the next piece to fall underneath the Cardinal Legacy Tow Group umbrella and and become another another offering that we have.
Updated Materials And More Hands-On
SPEAKER_05That is fantastic. And I I tell you, Megan, when I first got in the industry, the first training I saw was at Wheel Records Service here in Birmingham. And I went down there and it was Wes Wilburn, and he was doing uh the the entire light duty and medium duty training, so I stayed there and just watched the guys go through the entire course. And uh they were like, There's a publisher here. I said, Hey, look, I can write about this stuff, but I've I've hauled some race cars and some stuff like that myself, but I want to see how the professionals do it, and there's a lot that goes into it. And uh I tell you, I'm I'm so excited about this because uh Wes has trained what over 2,000 plus, done over 2,000 plus trainings in his lifetime. Um he's a um he is a legend in the industry and has brought some tremendous training uh across the nation to help others, and he's so passionate about it. And I've heard nothing but great things about JT. So I I know uh what you've got here is you've taken something that has been tremendous and been able to take that to the next generation and and not lose any of the robustness that that Wes had put in it from the beginning. Absolutely. Yeah, yeah, we definitely want to do that. So excited about that. Well, um I I know it's uh a new year, you've got some updated programs, so uh I I wanted to give you an opportunity to uh to talk about what you've got going on with those programs.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. Like we had talked about earlier, we're we're super excited to add the leadership piece to it. We've got fabulous feedback on on that extra piece to the puzzle that we've added there. Um the light duty class, we are looking to merge that with the EV class. Um, we're still gonna offer the three-hour EV class where it's a little bit more in-depth, but as far as the tow driver and that information that they want, we can definitely offer the dual certification, which again, that that makes it so much more efficient for them. They can come to one eight hour training, they can get dual certifications and boom, go right back to work. So that's that's definitely something we're gonna roll out here in the in the very, very near future. Um, the the heavy duty part of it is definitely gonna stay the same, but we're gonna have new real world I do it every day type experience that's out there. Between Justin and JT in over 40 years, who better to be teaching those classes than some guys that that have strapped up and jumped over bridges to hook up cars and get them back over? I mean, these they're they're like superheroes sometimes. So we're we're very excited to have them out there as the face of ATRI.
SPEAKER_05Awesome. That is so awesome. Yeah, I have to tell you, between between those guys and Wes, they all should wear a cape because they've done this more.
SPEAKER_00I definitely agree. I agree. But the presentations are updated. Uh the the content is is added to. It's not changed um at all, but we've definitely added more information to it. Uh, we've we've updated the manuals, we've updated the workbooks, we've updated just about everything um that's out there just to just not to change it for the sake of changing it, just to update it. We've we've got a lot of guys that are very loyal to us and and come every single year for recertification. And we want to make sure we're keeping it fresh and giving them something fun to look at and be more engaged, and we're adding a little bit more to the hands-on part of all of our trainings. So I think everybody will be excited about that because they they need the information on the classroom side, but I think every single one of them can't wait to get out there and and do the hands-on part of it because that's how they learn and that's what they love.
SPEAKER_05So oh, yeah, that's that's the most fun part from everybody like, hey, this this class we have to know the classroom stuff. I got it, but I want to go out there, put my hands on it, you know, hook it up and and see what happens. I want to I want to go put my hands on it and get in there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's how they learn. That's how all these guys are gonna learn. They're not sitting in in offices, they're out there with their trucks. So that's that's what we're really gonna make sure we're shifting focus on and not taking away from the classroom, but trying to be a little bit more efficient on the classroom side to where we can spend more time doing the hands-on.

SPEAKER_05Awesome. Awesome. Well, that's fantastic. Well, let's do this. Let me take another quick commercial break. We'll come back and listeners, we're gonna wrap this up with Megan Burns. How To Register Or Host Training
SPEAKER_05All right, we are back with Megan Bruns from Cardinal Legacy Towing and ATRI. And we are getting into the back section of this. And let me tell you guys, if you've been listening, the men and women in towing, you know how important the training is. And I I don't know if you've ever thought about it, but the leadership training is key as well. Uh the better we look, it just sells the service so much better when you're able to communicate better out there and it sells the service forward for so uh for your employer and uh just looks so much more professional uh out there on the line. So I just uh again uh give big props uh for for Cardinal Legacy uh towing and and uh also ATRI for what you guys are doing in the industry because you're helping keep this alive, grow our industry, and uh keep our men and women safe out there. And that's what we love here at uh Tow Professional. Uh let me ask you this, Megan. Um, we're telling I want you to tell our listeners where they can find these upcoming classes, give them some more information.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. Our our website has just freshly been updated. Um, and and just like you said, it's amtosignup.org, which is amtow signup.org. SPEAKER_05Awesome. And now let me ask you this. They can also go through here. Is there more spots left for the EV training course that's gonna be at the Florida show?
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah. Yeah, we've got plenty. Uh the room can hold up to 50, and and we're about halfway there. So there's there should be plenty of people that just walk in the day of. You don't necessarily have to register ahead of time. If we've got rooms, we'll give you a seat.
Growth Plans Closing And Prayer
SPEAKER_05Fantastic, fantastic. Well, that's something great to know. If you're gonna be there, might as well get some training while you're there. Um awesome, awesome. Well, and in closing, um the I I know the uh the towing industry is built on experience, skill, and teamwork. Uh, but I tell you, through the the partnership with Cardinal Legacy Towing Group and ATRI, I think there's gonna be some tremendous things you guys are gonna do in the industry. So I wanna I want to let you uh say some parting words here to our our our listeners. Anything you want to want to tell them about that we might have missed or I might have left out going over this?
SPEAKER_00Um we're we're super excited about the 2026 year, uh, not only for ATRI and watching that grow and and meeting new people, building a whole lot more new relationships. That way we can ask for help to get that to be expanded. We can't do it by ourselves, but we're we're looking for a lot of great acquisitions this year as well. The Carnal Legacy Tow Group brand, our our football footprint is always expanding. We've got a couple more on the horizon. So we're we're really looking forward to an exciting year, especially with the classes. If you back ahead with me, dear Heavenly Father, we just thank you for every one of our vendors and industry. We thank you for our manufacturers, our dealers, our distributors, our service providers. Lord, we ask you continue to bless them with ideas, knowledge, and uh and and help them be profitable in their industry and grow their business so they can reach more and provide safety and good products across the industry. And dear Heavenly Father, I ask that you put a special protection over our men and women of Towing. They're the ones that go out there and serve our loved ones at some of their worst times. And our men and women need to uh get back to their loved ones uh that they're leaving to help our families. So, Lord, keep them safe, bless them, increase them, make them prosperous, keep them healthy and safe for the heart they have for service in our loved ones. And we ask this in your precious name, Jesus. Amen. And as always, listeners, we thank you so much. You've helped tow professional grow to the number one podcast in industry.
