Eight seconds can be the difference between control and chaos on a dark roadside. We’re joined by Keith Bousquet, Senior Marketing Sales Manager at Will Burt Industries, to get practical about scene lighting for towing and recovery: what to mount, how to aim it, and why “more lumens” is only helpful when the light is placed the right way. If you’ve ever waited on a separate light unit, fought shadows while rigging, or had to move the truck just to see your work, this conversation is built for you.

We walk through Will Burt’s Night Scan light towers and why rapid deployment matters when you’re first on scene. Keith explains how pan-and-tilt control and wireless tether options let you reposition light without repositioning the recovery truck, keeping the focus on the pull instead of the setup. We also dig into a real safety problem crews don’t always connect to lighting: glare. Keith’s “sunlight effect” story makes it clear how low, intense lights can blind oncoming drivers and even your own operators, and why elevated lighting helps protect vision and reduce risk.

Then we get into gear many teams ask for: portable, powerful light that works with the batteries already in the truck. Keith introduces the TriStar work light, designed from end-user feedback, delivering 10,000 lumens, flexible battery adapters for common 20V platforms, weather protection with an IP54-style enclosed battery compartment, adjustable color temperature (Kelvin), and plug-in AC capability for the shop or long scenes. We also talk price point, runtime, and how some companies treat scene lighting as a billable service where allowed.

Welcome And Guest Introduction

SPEAKER_03

Well, welcome one and all. You are there. We are here. This is Tow Professional Podcast. And remember, this is your podcast. It's for the pros that have a need to know, that are on the go, and it's truly the voice of the towing industry, reaching over 24,000 listeners worldwide. And we thank you and God bless you for tuning in weekly. Well, this week we've got a treat for you. Wilbert Industries, one of the leaders here in lighting when it comes to scene lighting. And guys, we've got senior marketing sales manager Keith Bousquet that's on today, and he's going to tell us about the latest and greatest with Wilbert and how they can be a solution for you. So with that, Keith, welcome to the podcast. How are you doing today, sir? I'm great. Glad to be here. Man, glad to have you, man. Glad to have you. Well, this is this is one we've had you guys on before. We had great response to it. We thought we'd bring you back. And man, I'm going to start with one that this one's easy for me because uh I've seen as a leader in the industry, but uh folks don't know who you are.

What Will Burt Builds

SPEAKER_03

Let's tell them. Keith, tell them who is Welbert Industries?

SPEAKER_05

Well, we're the uh premier manufacturer of mobile telescoping mast, uh, towers, trailer systems, uh, pan and tilt uh positioning systems, which a lot of people use for dishes and antennas and camera systems, that type of thing. Uh, we offer a full uh gamut of mobile payload uh solution and integration uh services for defense, defense departments, government, first responders, telecommunicators, uh towing industries, and so many more uh different markets. Um we also offer some contract manufacturing, metal fabrication. We have one, a huge uh fabrication department at our facility. And we also do, we have a very large powder coating facility, uh, which does um a lot of powder coating for a lot of prestigious uh companies out there that we that we have the contracts for, um, so as well as prototyping services and that type of thing. Uh we're also an international company. Um, so we're basically got two companies in the U.S. We've got uh United Kingdom, we've got Germany, uh, we've got Singapore, uh, we're also 1901, um, ISO 1901 certified. And um we're also a lot of people don't realize this, we're 100% employee owned. So we're an ESOP company. Uh, so all the employees own own the company. We all have a we all have a stake in it.

SPEAKER_03

Wow, that is that's phenomenal, man. And I can tell you so that and it shows it, it shows the pride of the employees in the finished product, and you can tell. So phenomenal, brother. Well, let me ask you this. I know some people are asking, I've seen it out there on the road working, so I know why.

Why A Light Tower Matters

SPEAKER_03

But let's tell some of our listeners why a light tower.

SPEAKER_05

Well, uh it will actually uh enable you to get a whole lot of light in a quick deployment time frame. So um when you arrive on the scene, uh you can get from from activation to light is less than eight seconds. Okay. Wow. Um they're lightweight. Uh a lot of them. We have we have different models to pick from, but we have some as low as 100 pounds, is all it is all it weighs. It's not a lot. Um 12 volt. So we do AC and DC towers. Um, but most of what we do now is 12 volt because generators are kind of being phased out a little bit. Um so most of what we do, like I say, is 12 volt. But uh we can basically light up a large amount of light or a large amount of scene uh with a lot of light in in just a few seconds.

SPEAKER_03

Well, well, I can tell me if I'm wrong, but I before I I saw Wilbert in this industry, I'd see I'd see these guys out here and they're having to tow these units behind them, and and uh you know, if they don't have it there, they gotta run back, send a guy to bring it to them and hope it's full of fuel and everything's gonna and it's gonna crank and work. So I mean that's that's gotta be huge. Eight seconds setup and able to put light on the scene as opposed to calling Jimmy, simming, telling Jimmy, bring me a light out here. It's gonna be another 20 minutes before we can get to the scene. Um that that's huge. Well, what what are what are the advantages um that that the light tower gives you? I can think of a handful just thinking of that scenario. So tell our listeners.

Rapid Setup And Remote Control

SPEAKER_05

So obviously you're you're gonna carry it with you, so no need to have another vehicle. Uh, and then you're gonna have to have a pool vehicle on top of that, plus another man. Um so fuel costs, maintenance costs, etc. etc. Um it gives you the ability to do a like I say, a rapid deployment, but then you can also pan and tilt all of your lighting. Uh so when you get on the scene, you need to be able to position that lighting where you need it to be without moving the vehicle. Um so uh we also offer a wireless tether system. Um so when they're out there rigging the vehicle, and maybe maybe they're they're in a it's a long, long um scene, so maybe they're back and forth. Well, if they need to be able to maneuver the light, they can do so with this wireless tether without having to walk back and forth to the vehicle. And maybe they're on the other side of the ditch or a canal or whatever the case may be. Um and they all they need to be able to do is is go back and forth. Same company that makes their their wireless units makes this one. Um it's it's a really robust uh controller. We sell quite a few of them to in the in the towing world.

SPEAKER_03

So yeah. Man, that's that's gotta cut down the time on the scene. And also, like you said, some of these, some of these vehicles, their lights that they have on the vehicle, it's just one position. And if it's not pointing at the accident that you're getting, you've got to reposition the vehicle to try and get it to where you can see what you're doing.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, and and and a lot of times when you're doing recovery, that's not an option because the truck, the recovery is the priority. So you need to be able to position the truck to do the recovery. Well, if your lights are mounted and fixed, that's not gonna help you. Um, you know, side mounted scene lights certainly have their place. We sell quite a few of them as well, but it there's nothing that's gonna take place of a light tower when it comes to being able to get up on the scene, elevate over top. Um, you can do, you know, there's quite a few different applications you can do this with. Um, but yeah, I mean, like you say, I mean, the the side mounted scene lights, you're only as lit, you're only as good as the limitations, and the limitations a lot of times um due to just like just that, uh, it does limit you in a quite a bit. A tower, that's gonna that's gonna rise you above any kind of limitations you have, no pun intended.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I love that. And uh it I tell you, man, it's like uh, you know, some people bring a flashlight, some people bring a Swiss Army knife of all solutions for the scene. And uh, man, that's what the tower does. Is it's a uh solution for scene management and lighting. So that's awesome. Well, Keith, let's do this. Let's

Real World Mounting And Use Cases

SPEAKER_03

Well, welcome back, one and all. You are listening to Toe Professional Podcast. Every week, we do our best to bring you great guests and industry information. Now make sure you download us, listen. We're available on Spotify, iTunes, Pandora, Stitcher, iHeartMedia, Amazon, or wherever you get your podcast. And again, we're back talking with Keith Bousquay from Wilbur Industries, and he's telling us about how their light towers and lines of products can impact your business, put dollars in the 10, and keep your employees out there on task, doing the work, supported, professional, and safe. So coming back with this, Keith, welcome back, brother. And hey, for this next one, I got to ask you, are there any specific applications uh for the light tower? How does this work?

SPEAKER_05

We do see them on light uh wreckers, but mostly uh we'll see a lot of them on medium, medium duty wreckers, uh, and then a lot of them on heavy wreckers uh that do you know rotators, that type of thing. Um I have seen them on support vehicles. Uh so like a support vehicle, if they're doing a very large recovery system, maybe they pull up with uh like an old beverage truck or something like that that that's carrying their airbags and their shores and that type of thing. They may be needing, they'll mount the tower to that. Um, I've also seen them mounted to you know pickups and that kind of stuff for other applications as well. Now, um, what what do you use the tower for? I have seen them for like you know, any kind of uh like AAA, that type uh companies that go out and do maintenance and that type of thing. I've seen them, you know, do maintenance on vehicles out, you know, in a yard or or something of that magnitude. Um, I've I've actually heard this quite a few times uh in the past. Uh I've actually heard of companies um that go out to their their son or daughter's uh ball field. Um, and they go out and if it's rain delay or a power outage or whatever, they'll they'll roll a truck up there and they light up a uh a whole soccer field or whatever the case may be. Um, and so because our towers, we've we've proven it, our towers will light up an entire football field. Um, and so I have heard of stories of you know uh that have I have seen people do this in the past. So yeah, it does happen.

SPEAKER_03

Well, man, Keith, I tell you, you're talking about buying ice cream for the kids is one thing after the game, but uh lighting a field so they can play it. I think you'd have the kids buying you ice cream, it'd be the other way around. So, hey, if you want to be a town hero, hey, here's a product that can make that happen for you. So that's uh man, that's fantastic. Well, well, let me ask you this.

Safety And The Sunlight Effect

SPEAKER_03

Um, are are there uh does it offer any type of safety for the uh the users of the product?

SPEAKER_05

So I'm glad you asked that. That's actually one of my favorite topics to speak on, actually. Um, so a lot of people that know me uh personally, they know that my other job is a fire chief. So we use these light towers. Um on I've got two of them at our station, uh, two different vehicles. We use them extensively, and and I've learned a lot just by using them, not just selling them. Uh but one of the things I like to to kind of relate a safety effect is what I call the sunlight effect. So if you've ever been driving west in the morning um and you get into town and you're trying to see that traffic light, and that sun is just hitting you just right in the morning as you're on your way to work, um and you're like, oh wow, I can't even see the traffic light. I'm struggling with that. Maybe you're struggling with seeing the person's brake lights in front of you. Um, so there's a problem there, right? Uh well imagine that same intersection, same vehicles involved, same traffic light, but at 12 o'clock. It's a whole lot easier to see, right? Um, if you have side-mounted scene lights, and again, they have their place, no doubt. But if they are in eye level of you, then that can be that can be a problem, right? Um and so you want to be able to get that light elevated, get it above your head so you're looking down on it. So if you're wearing a helmet, if you're wearing a hat, that's what that brim is for, right? It's to protect you from the light. And that's exactly what it's doing. So the light is lighting up the scene, and your hat and your helmet or your helmet or whatnot is protecting your vision. Because studies have shown that just a simple flashlight that gets shined in someone's eyes, it takes the human eye about a minute to recover. Now, that's out of a flashlight. Can you imagine 240,000 lumens of light that's in your eye? That's a lot, right? Um, or a side mounted scene light that's 20,000 lumens. So if you're if you're driving up, just like that traffic light in that sun, if you're driving up and maybe you have side mounted scene lights, maybe the truck's at an angle, maybe it's a rear mount, and those lights are on and they're down low. Well, the driver of the on that's coming up behind you, they can't see you because they're blinded by the light. And so that that's obviously a safety problem. And if they can't see because of the light, it means they can't see you. And so that's a huge safety factor. And so if we can get that light elevated and put it above their heads, yeah, then you're gonna be a whole lot safer when it comes time to maneuver. Not to mention the fact that you're let's say you're off to the side of the vehicle, right? You're trying to look at where you maybe you're trying to see where your boom is and and and what kind of slack you may have in your cable or whatever the case may be. Well, if that side minus C light is shining right in your eyes, how are you gonna be able to see that? You're not, not effectively, anyway. And so every time you look up, you're gonna be blinded. And so you got to go and turn, and then you got to kind of get your your eyes uh refocused on what you're doing. I mean, everybody has had a flashlight shine in their eyes one time or another in their life, and so they know what it can do. Well, just imagine that just being exploded by by the amount of lumens of side-mounted scene lights that are out there today. They're super bright, no doubt about it. Um, but they can also, uh, you don't want your scene lights to, you know, which is supposed to be a safety device, you don't want them being a hindrance. And that can certainly happen when it comes to uh if you don't have the the right amount of scene light positioned in the right way. If you don't have it positioned correctly, they're worthless to you.

Turning Lighting Into Revenue

SPEAKER_03

Well, Keith, I guess the the next thing I want to ask you is is about this being a revenue maker, because uh from what I've seen, this is something you put on it, it's just gonna keep paying dividends for every one of the employees on the scene using this thing and for the comp and for the owners. So can you can you talk to that about it being a revenue maker? Sure.

SPEAKER_05

Um a lot of the a lot of the companies that I speak to, um, they do offer or they do charge for this system uh when it comes up on the scene. Um I've talked to two or three that said um that within six months they've they've paid for their investment and they're they're making money at that point. Um so yeah, I mean there are people, a lot of them that do charge. Uh obviously they would need to check with their local law uh to make sure that it would qualify in their area. Um but there are several locations that I do know that charge uh for this um for this application.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, awesome, awesome. Well, let's do this.

Sponsor Break

SPEAKER_03

Uh, I know we've got a new product we want to talk about here when we come back, and I'm excited about this. But let's take a quick commercial break to hear from our sponsors. And when we come back, listeners, we've got a new product. We're gonna dive into this, and Keith's gonna tell us about it. So hang in there, we'll be right back.

Introducing The TriStar Work Light

SPEAKER_03

Welcome back, listeners. You are listening to Toe Professional Podcast. And like I said, every week we do our best to bring manufacturers, the dealers, the distributors, the service providers in industry to give you information. So make sure you download, you listen. We're available on every place you get podcasts from Spotify, iTunes, Pandora, Stitcher, iHeartMedia, Amazon. Like I said, wherever you get podcasts, and now also available on YouTube. So we've been talking with Keith, Keith Bousquet. Uh he is the senior marketing sales manager of Wilbur Industries, and he's been telling us about the game changer here, the light towers, and how they can help you in your business. And now we're going to talk about a new product that they've brought to the market that I'm excited about. It's called the TriStar. So, hey, Keith, tell our listeners about this. I think this is going to be something that's going to be key for them on the scene in different places. Uh, so tell us about the TriStar and uh tell us about this light and and where it came from.

SPEAKER_05

Well, well, where it came from is actually the customers and users. So we listened. We all have like myself, we all have salesmen on the on the street. Uh, and we go out and we not only are selling our product, we're also listening to our customers. Um, like myself, there are other um fire department uh that work for the fire department, other individuals that work for us that work for the fire department, they also use a lot of this product, they see what works, what doesn't work. A lot of stuff in the fire world kind of translates to the towing world and a lot of aspects of what we're trying to do and what we're trying to accomplish. Uh, and we actually had so many people say, Man, we love your lights, um, and we we use your lights currently. Um, but can't you do something that is um that has a battery platform um that you can use your own batteries for? And um and so we looked at that uh and we just didn't want to come up with another Me Too product, right? That's not gonna be very effective. If we're gonna do something, we want to make sure that um what we bring out to the market is gonna fit a lot of, check a lot of boxes, if you will, right? Um one thing right off the bat, we know we're not battery people. Okay, we don't sell batteries, we don't make batteries, that's not who we are. We like to stay in our lane, we're lighting people, right? And that's where we like to stay. That being said, uh you have several manufacturers that are already out there that make a great battery product, um, that make great battery, you know, batteries themselves. So you have the Milwaukee, you have the DeWalt, you have the Makita, uh the Bosch, you have all of these products out there that already make good products, you know, as far as their batteries and stuff. And they they do make lighting as well. But what we did is we actually took um a lot of that and then enhanced it to to check a lot of boxes, like I said, that the customers came out with, right? To make it a far superior light. Uh, and that's where that's where this lighting came from. Um where this particular light came from. It basically came from the customers and listening to them and what they wanted. And that's where we that's where we came out with.

SPEAKER_03

I love that, man. Listening to the feedback and going ahead and and producing the product that fits the need. You can't you you you can't uh you can't beat that, man. Well, let me ask you this. What

TriStar Features That Solve Problems

SPEAKER_03

are some of the the features of of this? Tell us about it.

SPEAKER_05

So I like I was saying just a second ago, so we talked about some other manufacturers and they also make lights, right? Yep. Well, we wanted to look at that, evaluate it, uh, see if it was worth our time to do it, which we did. Um one of the one of the things that we found, and I just talked about this a little bit ago with a tower, is everybody's towers uh except ours, uh, most everybody's are are basically six foot tall. Well, the average, the average man is between 5'10 and 6'3. Guess what? That light is now in your face. Yeah. So that's not good. That's not good. We don't want to do that. That's not what we're here to do. We know that getting the light elevated is where we need to be. And so that's where we did this. So and so we came out with this one to try stars. So at the pivot point, it's seven and a half foot. Now, seven and a half foot doesn't sound very high, but trust me, when you're when you're talking about standing there and it's above your and you're pretty in close proximity, that seven and a half feet makes a big difference about getting that light above you. I I can tell you at trade shows, I'll have that light up and running, and people will walk up and they'll be talking. Um, and we'll be talking about it. And then I have another light that may be there that maybe is only six foot, and I'll be like, okay, tell me the difference. Oh my gosh, what a major difference. Yeah, that's that's the difference, uh, or one of the differences. Um, so we do uh the TriStar works off of either a Milwaukee, a DeWalt, uh a Makita, or a Bosch battery, uh 20 volt platform. Um, so and they're all interchangeable. You do not have to order a specific, you don't have to order DeWalt specific, Milwaukee specific, you don't have to do that. We provide all of those battery adapters with the light that's included in the cost of the light.

SPEAKER_03

Um, and that's that's every battery a man should have. And if you don't have that, I think you get your man card pulled if you don't have a wall.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah, tell me about it.

SPEAKER_03

One of those things.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, exactly. Um, so it uses the common battery, it's 10,000 lumens. Wow. So uh the closest one, most of them are about three to thirty, five hundred lumens. There is one that's six thousand lumens, uh, but ours is ten thousand lumens. Um, you can also shoreline this one. So if you if you don't have uh, or maybe your battery dies, whatever the case may be, or you're in the shop and you're needing some light and you don't want to have to run off the battery and you just need to plug it in, you can certainly do that. You can plug it in, run an infinite amount of time. As long as you have AC, you're gonna have light, no problem. Um, it's small enough too, so the power power consumption is very small. So if you had a small inverter that like plugs into the cigarette lighter plug, I've also seen law enforcement do that. Um, they'll use it and plug it into a to a cigarette lighter plug and it lights it up fine. Um, so if their battery dies, that type of thing. Um the other thing is ours has a battery door on it. So a lot of people, a lot of the other companies, you you've noticed that the battery is exposed. Well, you can put all the the IP rating on it you want, but you're only as good as your weakest point. And most of the time that's the battery. So what we did is we enclosed the the battery in a compartment, in a weatherproof compartment, which gave it an IP 54 rating, which is really good. Um, so if you're out there in the rain or whatever, it's not gonna really hurt. You can keep on going, it's not gonna bother. Um, obviously, you don't want to submerge it, but you know, uh, but in normal applications, and and you know, you'll be just fine. Fantastic. The other thing, 360-degree rotation. So you can you can rotate it 360 degrees, you can spin it. Uh each end is three different heads, each individual head will rotate 360 degrees as well. So it gives you what you know, you can you can light up a 360-degree rotation at one time if you need to. Um, three different light settings, uh, as far as a low, medium, and a high. Um, you also have in in the law enforcement, especially and some of the fire marshal worlds, a lot of people use it, it has uh what we call Kelvin. So the Kelvin is different light. So it's you have a uh a 3,000 Kelvin, which is a warmer light, right? Uh a 5,000 Kelvin is more of a cooler light, so it's kind of more of a whiter light. Most people choose that, but if you're doing photographs, most people want the warmer light. Um so this light has all of that built into it, right? Uh and the great thing about it all is you can literally take it out of the truck and deploy it in less than five seconds and have light.

SPEAKER_03

All right, Keith, let me ask you this: what applications does it offer?

TriStar Applications On Real Scenes

SPEAKER_03

Well, uh several different applications, actually.

SPEAKER_05

Um roadside assistant companies. So if they're going out to change the tire, maybe they're going out to maybe somebody run out of gas and need to drop them five gallons of gas or that type of thing, that's good. Um wreck recovery. So if you're out on the recovery, okay, sometimes some of the stuff's in the woods. Um maybe you're on the truck is blocking some of the light from the tower. You need to get light on the inside to be able to face back, to be able to shine what you're doing if you're doing some kind of rigging. So you have that capability here. You can certainly do that. Um so it keeps you from, you know, obviously it can help you with the rigging part, but also people forget about uh holes, stunts, you know, roots, tree limbs that may have fallen in the wreck, that kind of thing. Any kind of debris from the vehicle, maybe uh to so it keeps you from tripping over stuff and getting you from getting hurt and maybe having some sort of insurance claim, right? Um, yeah. Really, the sky for this light is kind of the limit. Um, it's a great versatile light um that that uh it's kind of have kind of has unlimited uses for it.

SPEAKER_03

Love it. I love it. It's fantastic new product, man. I'm loving this. Well, keep let me ask you this.

Price Point And Battery Runtime

SPEAKER_03

Are are there any advantages to this light versus some of the others that are on the market? Because I know others are gonna some are gonna say, well, it's a little it's close to it now. I've heard it being taller, which I really like that the seven and a half foot to get it out of out of your eyes. So uh what are some of those advantages over the the the competitors in the market?

SPEAKER_05

Well, number one, more lumens, right? More lumens. Uh number two, obviously getting it elevated so it's higher. So those are two quick points uh that we can that we can depend on. We talked about the battery door, uh, so it gives it a better IP rating. Um the battery flexibility we talked about. One thing we hadn't talked about, though, is price point. Um, you can get in this light under less than 500 bucks for this. Um ready to go, ready to ship. They ship out they're they're based in Ohio right now, they're ready to ship today if you want one. Um, battery runtime. So that get I get that question asked all the time. So basically, and I'll give you uh obviously when you're dealing with batteries, amp hour uh is king, right? Everybody knows oh, it's an 18 volt, it's a 20 volt, whatever, it's a flexible, whatever the case may be. Um, but then you know, oh, I got a four amp hour, I got a five amp hour, I got a nine amp hour, I got a 12 amp hour, I got a two amp hour, right? Et cetera, et cetera. I mean, there's so many different batteries out there with different amp hour. That's gonna determine the runtime is the amp hour battery. So this thing at full power require is is 2.7 amps or at 80 watts, basically. Okay. So with a four amp hour battery, you're looking at a runtime of 1.48 hours with a four amp hour battery. Okay, that's at full power. Uh a nine amp hour gives you three and a half hours of runtime on a nine amp hour battery, right? Obviously, the larger the amp hour battery, the more runtime you're gonna get on it, right? Um, so most people carry several different batteries. They even have maybe some small inverters that they're using to charge, uh, charge the batteries. I'll pop one out, pop one in, that kind of thing. Um, right. Keep in mind the older the battery, the the less that it's gonna be, um, the less power it's gonna be able to have. Uh, so that's always a factor in it. But as a game, as as a general rule, um, you can have a nine amp hour battery run this thing over three and a half hours at full power. Wow. Um, that is incredible. Uh yeah, this particular light. Um, just a just a really good application, lots of advantages. Uh, like I say, we listen to the customer, we listen to what they say, we listen to what they wanted, and we we feel like we gave them exactly uh what they asked for.
