Our guest today on the Outdoor Adventure Series is Matthew Dickerson.

Mathew is a Writer and Trout and Fly Fishing Enthusiast. He is the manager, editor, and feature writer for Trout Downstream. He is a member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America (and has served on the OWAA board of directors since 2021). He is the author of numerous books about trout, fly-fishing, rivers & ecology. 

And in his spare time, he is a professor at Middlebury College in Vermont.

Any time I hear from a reader that tells me my writing has had a meaningful impact on them.—especially if my writing has impacted how they think and, therefore, how they live, or perhaps simply has brought them delight through good writing and a story well told.

Treat people kindly when you meet them—especially when you are doing some outdoor activity like fishing, hiking, or camping.    If (like me) you enjoy fly fishing, make a point of giving away a fly or a useful piece of information (or both) to the next person you meet on the river (instead of being grumpy that they are there).  It will make it a better day for both of you.

If you are frustrated by the increasing number of people on the trails or rivers and you are tempted to complain about the crowds, remember that you are part of the crowds. Kind of like driving and getting frustrated by the “traffic” as though only other people were in the traffic; you have to remember that YOU are part of the traffic. The same goes for outdoor activities.
