What does it look like to keep moving toward Jesus when life takes you through unexpected trials, questions, and detours?
In this week’s episode of Latter-Day Lights, Scott and Darla sit down with husband-and-wife author duo, Aaron and Julie Bujnowski, who share how their own journey of faith inspired them to write their two books, “Navigating to Jesus,” and “Discovering Your Temple Insights.”
While “Navigating to Jesus” offers a Christ-centered pattern for finding direction through uncertainty and life’s challenges, “Discovering Your Temple Insights” helps readers approach Temple worship with greater preparation and purpose—learning not just about the Temple, but how to receive personal revelations from it as well.
From Julie’s conversion and battle with breast cancer, to the spiritual impressions that guided them through difficult decisions, Aaron and Julie reflect on how small acts of faith have continually pointed them back to the Savior. They also share practical ways to make Temple worship more meaningful, recognize God’s guidance through adversity, and hold onto the covenants that bind us to Christ.
Ultimately, they remind us that even when the path isn’t straight, keeping our eyes on Jesus can help us find peace and direction along the way.

Scott BrandleyI'm Scott Brandley.
Darla BrandleyAnd I'm Darla Brandley. Every member of the church has a story to share, one that can instill faith, invite hope, and inspire others.
Scott BrandleyOn today's episode, we're going to hear from a husband and wife who set out to answer their own questions about faith and getting more from the temple to becoming authors who ended up writing two books pointing to one conclusion that the answer always points to Jesus. Welcome to Latter
Welcoming Aaron & Julie Bujnowski to the show
Scott BrandleyDay Light. How are you guys doing today? Doing great. Thanks for having us.
Julie BujnowskiYes, fantastic. We're doing fantastic. Trying to stay cool here in Texas.
Scott BrandleyYeah, it's brutal, especially in the summertime, but it's probably getting a little bit cooler now, right? Starting into September or no?
Julie BujnowskiWe're praying.
Scott BrandleyAll right. Yeah. I'm here in Utah. It it's been a hot summer, but it's starting to cool down the last week or so, which has been nice. But it's great. Yeah. Well, we're really excited to have you guys. Um, why
Aaron & Julie in a nutshell
Scott Brandleydon't you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Aaron BujnowskiSure. I'll do a brief introduction, and Julie can correct anything I get wrong. Uh, we're Aaron and Julie Bonowski. We've been married 34 years. We were high school sweethearts. We met in the marching band when we were both high school students in Tennessee. I was a member of the church, she was not. We got married in the Atlanta Temple after my mission, and we have two child adult children, uh, one who's 29, and she and her husband just moved back. Uh, they have a little our first little grandbaby, she's 14 months old, and she's pregnant with our second little grandbaby, and so we're super excited for that. And then our youngest will turn 26 next uh week, and he is about to graduate with his uh degree and works as a theater technician. We have an accountant and a theater technician, so we have two ends of the spectrum.
Scott BrandleyWow, you guys look pretty young to have a 29 and a 26 year old.
Julie BujnowskiSo both of us were a month apart. We turned 55 this year, so uh I think our bodies are feeling it. Okay, that's right.
Scott BrandleyWell, we're glad you're here and we're really excited to hear your guys' story. Uh so why don't we turn the time over to you and you can tell us where your story begins.
Julie BujnowskiSure. So back
About Aaron & Julie’s book
Julie Bujnowskiduring COVID, um, when we were all, you know, quarantined to our homes, uh, Aaron and I would have um come follow me during the week on Sundays. And then uh we started um talking about the temple and what it meant to us. And we would just talk about different um topics of the temple, about our covenants that we make, and we thought we would leave a legacy for our kids. And so we would talk, Aaron would write, I would edit, and then it just kind of grew and grew. And um, after we were done, Aaron was like, I think I'm gonna send this to some publishers. And I'm like, our last name is not Monson or Hinckley or, you know, we're just average members of a church, just you know, keeping on and enduring. And um, and so we ended up um sending it off and got a wonderful message back from Cedar Fort Media and Broadcasting, and um they offered to publish our book. And um, we're in many outlets, but I I think what has been so wonderful is the response that we get back from people who have read it. Um, how the book is laid out. We talk about a gospel principle or we talk about a covenant, we talk about those ceremonies and different difference between ceremonies and rituals and different things. And at the end of each chapter, there's a journaling area. It will have prompt questions. So after you go to the temple, we always talk about being prepared before you go so you can have get something more out of it. And one of the things that Aaron and I will do uh after we go through a session or whatever work that we're doing there in the temple, we'll sit in the celestial room and we'll say, So, what stood out to you today? What did you need to hear today? And so we've kind of made that a habit um throughout our marriage, every time we attend the temple. So the book is really something that can be a journal that you could keep on uh writing in because you're constantly going through different moments in your life and you are evolving and changing and growing spiritually. And so you may have that same, the same question proposed, but you may have another completely different perspective because of what you've gone through in your life. And so um, when we first wrote it, we we had some people read it, and one of the comments that we got back were, could you have more personal stories? And we were like, Oh, yeah, we've got all kinds of stories, and not only about our lives, but about our friends in the gospel who have gone through different things or who have learned um how to draw closer to the savior. And so I think those are kind of like those sweet nuggets that are in the book that you get to hear real life experiences and how they applied it in their life. And I think we learn through other people and you learn about a situation they've gone through, and you're like, wow, if they can get through that, I can get through my thing, right? And so I think the book can is really personable. Um, and I think it can be something that is a guide that can help you, especially those who
Aaron & Julie on teaching Temple Prep
Julie Bujnowskiare new to going to the temple, part of one of our other callings. Uh, we uh teach uh temple prep. And we had an adult couple who had been a member for a year and they went through our class. And then after they went through the temple, they were like, we want to come to your class again because we have so many questions and now this it puts it all together and the excitement in their eyes, it was like, oh, that you know, so um the whole purpose of us writing it was a legacy for our kids, but just to touch one person's heart, if we can uplift someone, if we can help them gain a testimony of temple work and temple worship and going there as a place of peace and refuge and a place for you to receive revelation and guidance. So um that's really kind of what started, and we've kind of like seen uh how it's touched others, and that
How can we get more from the Temple?
Julie Bujnowskiis the best part.
Aaron BujnowskiAnd what I'll say, you can see all these books here behind us. I think right there on that shelf, I've got every book ever published on the temple back to like the early 1900s. I was gotten into eBay and I would buy things, and of course they're all wonderful, they're all amazing. But what I found is the common pattern was the books talked about the temple, about the history, about the symbolism, and of course, all of that is very important. But there wasn't a book that said, How can I get more from the temple? And so we decided to focus our book on how can you go to the temple and leave there with an elevated sense, number one, first and foremost, of your testimony of Jesus Christ. He is the center of the temple. Everything there points to him. And in the uh teaching of the Savior's Way book, it says put Christ at the center of your teaching. We had one reader say, Well, your book seemed like come follow me for the temple, almost like help me learn about Jesus and the temple. And we thought that was such a kind compliment. Um they said that. So I think that's what makes it a bit unique. Um, because we're trying to just give people nuggets that they can learn from, stories they can hear, and then we ask them, what can you do to learn from the temple? And we try to engage them in the learning process versus just handing them a plate of food. We say, Hey, here's some ingredients. Why don't you take that and make something for yourself and then have a feast, right, of those ingredients? And all we try to do is give them the ingredients they can use. So, you know, on that journey, it was interesting. We never figured we'd ever be published authors. This was never an aspiration of ours. Um, so that happened. At the same time, I had recently been released as bishop. Julie was serving as a stake release study president. And as we thought about our own faith journey, we thought, you know, Julie went from being a non-member to converting to the church and joining the church her freshman year of college. Um, and then we've had this amazing 34-year marriage with ups and downs, and and Julie's going to share a few of our stories. We thought, well, what kept us on
What kept Aaron & Julie on the path? And on writing their 2nd book
Aaron Bujnowskithe path? What kept us moving forward, especially when things got tough? And the answer was simple, as you mentioned in your intro, that it pointed to Jesus. And so we started looking through the scriptures, and Elder Bednar talks about that the scriptures give us patterns. So we said, well, is there a pattern in the scriptures that really worked for us and we think works for others? And we found it uh in King Benjamin's discourse, you know, when he was talking about having a mighty change of heart, he lays out a path, and that path is fairly simple. You say, Well, you might have experienced some opposition, something that like is a shock to the system, whatever it is, a health issue, a faith issue, whatever it is. And I know, Scott, you've talked about faith issues and faith journeys. And the first thing you do is you awaken unto God. You know, he said, Hey, look who God is, who you are, understand. The second one is understand his plan. You know, we always go back to the plan, and then you seek Jesus and then you believe. One of the interesting things we found is that um Jesus never said when he was going to heal someone, like, okay, the blind man says, Well, will you heal me? And he didn't say, Well, here's like the 15 things you got to do to be healed, right? He just said, Do you believe? And he said, Yes, I believe. And then the one poor man who had the son, right? He said, Well, help mine unbelief. Because it was his life was so tough he didn't know if he could even believe. And the Savior says, Well, I had you, right? Well, once you do that, you act in faith, right? And then we do the things that we know we hear every week of the sacrament. We remember him, we minister to others in their trials, and then that mighty change happens. And I think maybe the secret part of the mighty change is a mighty change is made up of a lot of many changes. It doesn't happen overnight, and there's lots of little changes. And by the way, we're still changing, we're not done yet. And that is the process. And so when we wrote the second book, we kind of realized that it was the prequel to the temple book. That all of us are on a faith journey of some sort, and we're trying to understand and make our way through this life. Of course, we always putting Jesus at the center. That's why we call the book navigating to Jesus, because navigating, you don't go in a straight line, right? Sometimes the wind blows you one side and you're moving, right? You're trying to, as long as you keep your eye on the destination, you can kind of make your way in those turbulent waves. Um, and as you're doing that, the temple becomes that anchor point for you. It's a physical symbol and a physical place we can go where the spirit is, where our covenants bind us to Jesus. It's his house, the house of the Lord. Elder Bednar has encouraged us to call that building the house of the Lord versus the temple. So it is his house. We know we from experiences in church history, people have actually seen him there. We know he could come there if he would like, right? What a special place that if you're on this journey of faith, make the temple kind of this place that you can go and experience Jesus there. So it just kind of was this aha to us that our second book was actually the prequel to our first to really work together to kind
If you don’t understand, see how it relates to the Savior
Aaron Bujnowskiof help us move towards Jesus.
Julie BujnowskiNow, and a lot of times people don't have these miraculous experiences in the temple, or sometimes they feel, well, if I don't have that, maybe there is something wrong with me, or um, I don't understand. And we always say, if you don't understand, see how it relates to the savior, right? See how it relates to the savior. And I can testify to you that as you continue to have temple worship, as you continue to have faith and you keep on enduring, that the Lord is aware of you and is watching you and sending people your way. And keep your eyes open, keep your heart open, and see how the Lord speaks to you each day. And I know that He can and will do that. So don't give up, don't lose hope. Keep going, keep trying, keep enduring.
Aaron BujnowskiWe share several stories in both of our books, and one that's very poignant that I think shows that tender mercy that Heavenly Father and through his son Jesus Christ have given us is her cancer. Julia is a breast cancer survivor. And that process began when I was serving as bishop. Um and I'll let you her tell that story, and then we'll talk a little bit about how that enabled us to actually navigate to Jesus and how the temple played a massive part in all
Julie’s breast cancer journey
Aaron Bujnowskiof that.
Darla BrandleyYeah.
Julie BujnowskiSo um I was diagnosed with breast cancer uh nine years ago on September 18th. So I've been cancer free for nine years. And um, yes, and um breast cancer does not run in my family. I went in for a routine mammogram and they found it. Um and I had a really quick decision to make. I had two weeks to decide uh the treatment plan. Within that first week, I went to see all the doctors, the oncologist, the surgeon, the reconstructive uh plastic surgeon, the radiologist, like on call, everybody. So it was it was kind of like a fire hose of information and just overwhelming hearing the C-word, right?
Darla BrandleyYeah.
Julie BujnowskiUm, and also one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. So, sisters, take care of yourself, husbands, brothers, uncles, fathers, encourage those women that you love to do this to go and get that mammogram. But I had two weeks to make a decision, and he is very busy in his career, very busy as a bishop at that time. And I needed to make a decision. What are we gonna just scoop out the cancer? Are we gonna go more aggressive? What treatment are we gonna do? And so we fasted, we prayed, we attended the temple, and every time I prayed, I got this impression of you need to be more aggressive, you need to take the aggressive route. So um after each image, I had everything from a mammogram screening to the um ultrasound to an MRI. I mean, they're screening and screening. And after each one, it was always bigger than what they thought. So when they got in for the surgery, it was even bigger and it had spread to a sentinel node. We didn't know that in the beginning, but we had the impression that this is what needed to happen. And I'm so grateful, even though that was such a scary time, I felt so connected to my heavenly father. Like he was with me to give me peace and to help me through this. And so afterwards, after coming out of surgery and hearing about, oh, it was even bigger than we thought, it was the right decision to have a double massectomy and to be more aggressive with it. So one of the things that I had so many ministering angels during that time, you know, I had so many sisters in my ward who just reached out and sent love my way in during my radiation treatments. I had each friend uh take me to radiation so I could like have a smile and not think about it on the way there, and just to kind of have someone fund as I drove home to relax and kind of heal. Um, but one of the things I'll never forget during my surgery, they were putting in uh spine blockers in my back. So kind of like a an epidural, so they can numb it. It helps with healing and other things. Well, I was under anesthesia and I was coming out of it and I was whimpering and crying because it was hurting. And I'm kind of becoming aware, I'm crying, and I hear this nurse who is not a latter-day saint, but she is a woman of faith, and she is praying over me. And can I tell you, um, I will never forget that. And again, that was a testimony to me that Heavenly Father was aware of me, the Lord is aware of me, and he sent someone who was a woman of faith to care and watch over me. And he knows what happens in our life, even sometimes when we don't feel like we are feeling it or
Aaron & Julie’s relationship after their baptism & mission
Julie Bujnowskiseeing it, he is there.
Darla BrandleyYeah.
Aaron BujnowskiAnd what's amazing to me as a witness to all this, so I'm gonna go back in time. So when Julie and I met in high school, she was not a member. She wanted to take this the missionary discussions, and her family had some worries about the church. We live in in Nashville, which is considered the buckle of the Bible belt. So heavenly Protestant, a lot of concerns about members of the church. And so they wouldn't allow her to be baptized. Well, she kept, you know, taking the missionary discussions. And when we would go to the temple for our youth temple trips, which at the time was in Atlanta, so we would drive uh almost four hours from Nashville to Atlanta. Sometimes Julie would come with us and she would dress in her Sunday dress, she would go into the visitor center and she would walk around the temple while we were there because she couldn't go in. So she would go that was her, that's what she could do. This is her sacrifice, right? So fast forward when she turns 18, she's baptized, and I went on my mission and I came home from Chile. We got married 26 days after. So you're not getting uh release, you're just getting a companionship change. So I just kind of Yeah, no, no Rush, no Rush. No Rush. And um, so we had a decision to make. Are we going to get married in the temple? Are we gonna not? And wait a year. At that time, you've had to wait a year to get sealed in the temple. And just felt like in, I said, Well, it's up to you, darling. I mean, you're because her family were not members, mine were, so this is a big decision. And we prayed about it, and she said, I really feel impressed that we need those covenants. We need to have that. We need that blessing. So again, at that time when Julie's cancer came, we were married for 24 years, it's been 34 years now, so you know, 20, 40 years. That act of faith that under that kind of extreme pressure didn't begin then. It began when she was a non-member saying, I want to be baptized, but I can't, but I'm gonna go to the temple anyway, and I'm gonna do what I can do, I'm gonna go to seminary, I'm gonna go to youth things, I'm gonna do what I can do with what I've been given until I can do more, right? And so people's faith journey builds with time. And what I think is important is that as each of us learns to walk that degree of faith, we don't know what we're being prepared to do. Now, not everyone's gonna get cancer, but there may be other things that
Aaron as a Boy Scout
Aaron Bujnowskipeople run into in their life. I'll share one story from my life. When I was a Boy Scout, I remember I got lost in the middle of the woods. I didn't know where I was going. But I remember the story of Joseph, right? So I knelt down and I prayed, and I actually had this impression, oh, you have a compass in your belt. Take out the compass. And I had this impression to go forward, you know, it and I found the road and I got back, right? Now, fast forward 30 years on the bishop. I was at my bedside kneeling, and I had this significant impression to text the sister in our ward. And I texted her and said, I heard she was having a hard time. I said, Hey, I heard you're having a hard time. And she says, Yes, because I don't think the Lord's listening to me. He says, Well, he sent me to tell you that he's listening, right? Well, the next day she texted me and she said she had had it out with the Lord. She said, You're not listening to me. I just need some sign that you are actually talking to me. And that's when I texted. And that's when I said, He told me to tell you that I'm talking to you. Now that text didn't start then. It started when I was a Boy Scout, and I was learning to listen to the Spirit as a Boy Scout and through many experiences on my mission. And afterwards, I finally culminated in this experience. So faith journeys start small, they start in little experiences where we learn to listen to God, we learn to have faith and step into a darkness. I didn't know where I was going, I just knew the Lord tell me to go in a certain direction. But that came to pass, and then when we were praying about your um situation and what you should do, that was when it really came to pass. It's like, oh, I was a husband, not just a bishop. And I needed to help this good sister understand and support her revelation that she needed to have. And so that helped me understand what she was going through. So again, our faith journeys has been interesting. Each of us have had experiences in our life that we needed individually that also brought us together as a married couple that we needed together.
Julie BujnowskiAnd he was a good nurse too. He took good care of me.
Aaron BujnowskiYes, I got a lot of experience doing that. Now I work in healthcare, but I'm an administrator, not a physician. So but I got some clinical experience helping her out.
Darla BrandleySo that's amazing.
Aaron BujnowskiWell, one thing that maybe I'll share with you, and maybe I don't know if you can see this here. Can you see this?
Darla BrandleyWell, that's beautiful.
Aaron BujnowskiYeah, okay. This is a glass egg. You see, it's beautiful, it's got colors in it, right? It was made by an artist. Okay. So I
Pressure is important
Aaron Bujnowskithink we're similar vintage. So in 1980, um, Mount St. Helens erupted, right? I was I remember this happening. You remember it was just devastating.
Darla BrandleyYeah. I think we felt it. I think I felt the vibrations.
Aaron BujnowskiYou probably felt it. And you remember it wasn't like lava, but it was like ash, went everywhere. Well, an artist took some of that ash, and if you take ash and put it under extreme, extreme. Pressure, you can actually turn it into glass. So if you notice scripture in Isaiah that says, I will take beauty and make beauty of ashes.
Darla BrandleyYeah.
Aaron BujnowskiOur lives a lot of times feel like Mount St. Helens, where we've had an explosion, we've had breast cancer, we've had many other instances, illnesses, other things in our lives that feel just devastating. And yet the Lord, under that pressure, can take and make something of beauty in our lives. And we have to trust that he'll do this. That's why navigating to him is so important because we don't have the power to do that on our own. Only he can take that ash and create something so marvelous and beautiful in our lives. And so I we keep this on our shelf just to remind us when we're feeling the pressure and maybe something feels so devastating and ugly as ash, if we focus on the savior, he can actually compress that into something and make us more beautiful. We we read about the scriptures that the Lord will refine us. And that refining process is difficult. Maybe it hurts even a little bit, but the result is so marvelous. And again, he's not done with us. I'm sure there'll be other things, but our path is set, right? And it's always focused on him.
Darla BrandleyYeah.
Aaron BujnowskiYeah.
Scott BrandleySometimes it hurts a lot. It does.
Darla BrandleyWe may not know why we're in the place that we are, but looking back after you've gone through it and looking back, you're like, oh my goodness, we're in such a better place. We're our life is so much better. It's way more beautiful than I could have dreamed if I'd gone the direction that I had expected to go, rather than the way that the Lord has taken me.
Julie BujnowskiYeah. I think too, the experiences that we have, you are gonna be a ministering angel to someone else that is going through something similar. And God is gonna put you in their path to help them. And you're gonna be that person that lives for them and is a light to them and helps strengthen them through a hard time. I've had many friends who are like, Oh, Julie, my friend just got diagnosed. Would you mind talking? And oh, of course. And I tell them, I go, okay, now you are gonna be that person for someone. And I had a sister come up to me and goes, Julie, remember when you told me that? She goes, it just happened. And I said, see. We go through these things in life, and Heavenly Father lets us experience them, even though they are so hard. Um, but we endure and then we can use that to minister in love to others.
Aaron BujnowskiCan I share just one other thing that just comes to my
Tacking & sailing analogy
Aaron Bujnowskimind? So I had this experience uh one time where I went on a sailing trip. And if you've ever been on a big sailing vessel, I guess in my mind, you know, when I was a kid, you'd watch sailing vessels and you think, well, you got to have this big sail, and the wind's gonna blow behind you and gonna push you along. And I remember asking the captain, like, what happens when the wind's kind of coming at you? Like, are you stuck? Do you just not go anywhere? And she said, No, actually, you go faster. I go, what do you mean? She said, Well, you do what's called tacking. You actually move the sails at an angle to where they actually become like the wing of a plane, and the wind that's blowing by them pulls you forward. And the thing that keeps you from going off course is that big fin that goes under the water. It keeps you kind of and so what happens is when the winds blow against you, if you go, but you can't travel in a direct line, you gotta kind of go this way and you gotta go that way. It's called tacking. You go backwards and forwards, right? And you can actually travel faster as the wind pulls you instead of pushes you. Our lives are like a lot of times we feel the winds of adversity pushing against us, whether it's fate crises, whether it's uh health crises, whether it's mental health crises, or whatever the other thing is. And when you navigate and Jesus is the focus and you learn and you have the stabilizing keel, which is your faith, right? You've got your ability to steer properly and maybe take an indirect route because it's kind of hard to go straight in that wind, but you kind of figure it out, right? But you keep an eye on your destination, which is always the savior. And amazingly enough, like you said, when you look back, Darla, you say, Wow, I grew faster during that time than ever before. Would I have ever chosen that? Nope. You don't raise your hand and say, Hey, give me that, right?
Darla BrandleyYeah, but oddly you're grateful for it because you're like, I wouldn't be where I am, or you know, even though I I wish I hadn't had to go through that, but I'm glad I'm here where I am.
Aaron BujnowskiWell, you know, it's so fun that we're now, of course, we're in the New Old Testament and we're just finishing up with last week's Psalms. Isn't it interesting how many psalms not only talk about the difficulties the the psalmist was, but how much he praises or she praises the Lord. Isn't that interesting that we can simultaneously feel duress and challenge, but simultaneously feel gratitude and praise for his goodness and mercy in our hearts and our lives. Yeah.
Scott BrandleyYou guys know who Tony Robbins is? Yes, yes. So one of my favorite things that he teaches is life happens for you and not to you.
Darla BrandleyYeah.
Scott BrandleyAnd it's easy to think, why is my life so hard? Why are all these things happening to me? Right. And it just can get overwhelming. But if you just change it and think,
Things don’t happen TO you, they happen FOR you
Scott Brandleythat's not happening to me, it's happening for me.
Aaron BujnowskiWell, you know, there's an interesting story we share in our book that's actually from one of the church videos. And this person's story was shared in general conference. Um, if you'll recall, there was a sister in the church with seven kids, and her husband was killed uh it while he was away in the war, and then the letter he wrote to her kind of came after his passing, right? And she talks about this in one of the church videos. She says something in that video that's amazing. She said, instead of thinking that everything happens for a reason, because I'm not sure if my husband dying had a reason to it, he said, let Heavenly Father give a reason for everything that happens. And if we think about our lives, because some things in our lives are just random, right? I mean, the Savior said it shines sun, the sun shines and the rain falls on the good and the bad, right? Just some things are just random. But if we keep our eye on the Savior, he'll provide the meaning that will take something that seems so random and maybe even unfair and help us find our way through that. But only he can do that because we just don't have that perspective. He's got that larger perspective that he can kind of allow us to see and make meaning out of something that maybe seems fairly meaningless or random or painful. Um, and if we keep our eye on him, he can find the meaning for us.
Darla BrandleyYeah. That's like my favorite quote. It's almost exactly the same. It's not um, it's all a part of God's plan, but that God has a plan for everything.
Aaron BujnowskiThat's right.
Scott BrandleyYeah. Well, as you've as you've shared some of your story, you wouldn't have been in a position to write a book about the temple or about or a book about faith if you wouldn't have gone through all these events in your life to get you to that point. Yeah. Whether it's big or small, whether it's like a horrible thing or an amazing, all of these things in our lives get us to the point where where we can help others, where we can lift where we stand, right?
Aaron BujnowskiAnd I would say that not everybody aspires to be an author. We didn't even aspire to be an author, right? We just kind of write things down. But I would say that um always remember him, I think was one of the principles we talked about. Well, part of remembering him can come as you're writing in your personal journal. We actually encourage people to keep a temple journal. And so, of course, you don't write the sacred parts of the temple that we shouldn't share, but the impressions and the direction that you're given. Maybe you have a journal that you just keep. And when you get home, you go find a private place and you write down what Heavenly Father is teaching you. And then when you're having a future tough time, maybe the last time you had a tough time, you can read through how he helped you at those times. That's really what the scriptures were. The scriptures were journals that were written, and people said, Oh, this is what happened, how the Lord intervened. Of course, when you're crossing the Red Sea, that's a pretty good thing you want to put in your journal, right? But I would say that Julie's revelation on what she should do with her canceler was as big at the Red Sea for us as it was for the Israelites. And in our book, all that simply was was us kind of turning that into something that maybe could help someone else. And to be frank about it, that's all we hope. We just hope that even if one person says, I was able to get a little closer to my savior because of something that you wrote, that gives us all the satisfaction in the world. And individuals can do that for themselves and their families. Write down your temple journal, write down how the Lord helped you, how he blessed you, the trials you're going through, and then remember that for future times because that'll support you and help you build that foundation over time. Yeah, I love that.
Scott BrandleyWell, and one thing I like about your story, and I know you're going to share something else. Um, what I love about your story, and it's kind of similar to mine, how I wrote my book too, is we're just normal people, right? We're normal people who's had different events happen to us, and we want to be able to share some of our perspective, right? So that we can help. One that would make all the difference in the world. What I've found, and you can you'll probably agree to this, is that one person is usually yourself. That's right. I spent nine years writing that book, and the journey that I went on just going through that process was life-changing for me. As I'm sure it's been for you
Aaron & Julie making an audio book
Scott Brandleyguys too, right?
Aaron BujnowskiNo, it has, you know, one of the interesting blessings that have happened just in the last six months is um it took a little while for us to get the audio versions of our book out. We found two fantastic narrators as a husband and wife team. They really brought this to life. And as we were re-listening to it through their vocalizations, right there, I remember thinking to myself, wow, I need to hear this again. I need to hear this, right? I know I wrote this. Who wrote that? Yeah, who wrote that? And that wasn't me. It was like way above my pay grade. Uh and you realize like the Lord's hand was in all of this, right? Really, really was. I mean, we really can't take credit for any of this. But I needed to be reminded of some of the things that I even wrote down even in my journal, which ended up being these books, just to remind myself, oh yeah, that is. I need to hear that now because new things have happened in our lives since then, right? And I need to be re-reminded of how the Lord has helped me and loved me and guided me, even when I'm kind of now in a new low, right? So he can bring me bring me back up to a new high.
Julie BujnowskiI think what's kind of unique about our book, too, is that it's in our voices. So it's Aaron is you know talking about a point, I'm talking about a point and sharing. So it goes back and forth like a conversation. So it was great that we found a husband and wife that were able to do the audio, and they're so much better. There's a reason why you hire people for a thing. They're amazing, but also I think it's important too. We're just excited that it's out on audio because a lot of people are in their cars and traveling and going to work and you know, might not be able to sit and read it. But um, but I do love that he gets to share, I get to share, we go back and forth. That's kind of fun.
Darla BrandleyI love that.
Aaron BujnowskiA thought came to me while you were talking, Scott, if you don't mind. Um, this is how I think the Lord
Temple prep sample
Aaron Bujnowskiworks through us, is he gives us little thoughts. Two things. One thing that we share about going to the temple is as Julie mentioned, you go there with a thought in your mind and with some preparation. So you say, look, I'm going through this thing. Like, what could I learn? What do I need to learn about? So you say, well, maybe I need to learn about mercy. Let's pretend you're having an issue with a child and you're like, oh, I really want to punish this kid. And like, oh, maybe I should have some mercy. Well, why don't you go to the scriptures? Read every scripture on mercy, go find some general conference talks on mercy. Go to the temple going, okay, Heavenly Father, I want you to teach me about mercy today. And whatever ordinance you pick, it can be baptisms, it could be an endowment, it could be a ceiling, focus on that and ask Heavenly Father when you get in there, like, okay, I want to learn about what you need me to understand about this principle today. Now, you again, you've brought ingredients with you. You've brought something you're offering to the temple. The Savior can then take and has things to work with. Now, you can always go to the temple and just say, okay, I don't have anything in my mind. I just want the Lord to talk to me. He can always do that. There's no problem with that. In fact, what we found is sometimes you go seeking an answer and he gives you a question. Uh you go to the there with a question, he gives you an answer to a question you weren't even asking. It's a whole different question. It's like, hey, I yeah, that's great, but I got something else for you today, right? But go there with some things in your mind, right? And then go back home. Remember what he told you, write that in that journal we talked about, and then act on it. Elder Bendar talks a lot about this, acting on that prompting because that's faith, acting on a belief. And then it's kind of like shampoo, lather, rinse, and repeat. Do that again, right? It's like, okay, I don't have the full answer. So I'm gonna go with another principle, and I'm gonna do that over and over again until like the path starts to emerge for you, right? And that's how, you know, Elder Bernard talks about revelation being like a light that like sunlight that comes up in the morning, right? Not like a switch that comes on. That sunlight will come into your life and will enlighten your path. Just like we read in Proverbs, you know, you're a lamp to my feet, a light to my path. That light happens as you bring your offering to the temple, and it takes some preparation. Study, read a topic, and ask the Lord to tell you what He wants you to learn about it. That is a process of revelatory experiencing the temple, all with an eye on the Savior. And maybe that will help people navigate themselves while they're there and will give them a purpose for being there and allow the channels of revelation to open up to them.
Scott BrandleyI like that. Just the preparation side is a great insight.
Darla BrandleyYeah.
Scott BrandleyTrying to do what you can before you even get there, and then God can help us add to it, right?
Aaron BujnowskiOne other thing I'll share is this is today was testimony meeting.
Testimonies + Faith is the evidence
Aaron BujnowskiAnd we often share our testimonies. It really, our books are nothing more than a testimony, right? A testimony of God's goodness in our lives and Jesus' work in our lives. We have such a blessing to hear that every month, right? Well, when I was serving as a bishop, I had this experience where I could have you ever had where you had one speaker and you're like, whoa, that could just feel something there. And then other maybe not so much. You're like, okay, so I I over the almost six years of being bishop, like, what is the commonality between when you really feel something impactful and maybe one that wasn't as impactful? None are ever bad, but there's just one that hits you harder, right? And I found an interesting insight, and it's a pattern that I saw. When someone would say Jesus is the Christ, the Book of Mormon is true. The church has been restored. Versus, I know that Jesus is the Christ, I know the Book of Mormon is true. The Spirit will always testify what you said. In the second instance, he'll testify that you know these things. But if you say the church is true, he'll testify that it is, and that Jesus is the Christ. If you listen to general conference, more often you'll hear those general leaders, those good brothers and sisters who are general leaders, just declare what is truth. Sometimes I know this, but most of the time they are just declaring what is true. And that's how you lift another person. I that's when it really hits you because the spirit can say, Yes, Jesus is the Christ. Yes, the Book of Mormon is the Word of God. You can still say, I know it, right? And the spirit also satisfy that, yeah, that person knows it. But isn't it more impactful when you hear the declaration of truth? That's how we can take these experiences and lift others because they can hear that and it'll give the chance for the spirit to touch their heart and say, Wow, that really is true. Now, I remember one time there was a story, Elder Scott said, I had when he was a mission president, he told President Kemple, I've got a missionary that doesn't know some of these things, doesn't know if Joseph was a prophet. And President Kempbell said, Have him testify that he was a prophet, and the spirit will bear testimony to him, and he'll gain his own testimony. So if you're doubting, if you're on your journey and go, I don't know, that's okay. Just declare it, and the spirit will confirm your declaration is true. And that's how you can even lift yourself dead. Scott, you said, right? I sometimes I gotta lift myself. Well, testimonies are ways you can do that because it's your experience with divinity, right? And maybe that's a little key to how you can build your faith.
Scott BrandleyYeah, I like that.
Darla BrandleyWell, I feel like that's the way the Lord teaches us almost everything, is that we have to do something first, and then he teaches us the truth of it. You know, like we take a step in faith, we obey the commandment, we read the scriptures, or we do the something, and then he confirms it and he gives us, it opens our minds to new knowledge. Once we've done the action, I think we need the faith first before we get the answer. Does that does that make any sense? Did I it does?
Aaron BujnowskiWe you know, there's a script, the scripture in Hebrews 11 that says faith is a substance of things hoped for, evidence of things not seen. Well, I used to ask my seminary students, I taught seminary for a few years. I said, What does it say? It says faith is the evidence. Faith is the hope. So I tell people, how do I know if you have faith in tithing? Well, you pay your tithing. Yeah, faith is the evidence, right? That is the evidence. Uh the fact that you got up for seminary this morning says you believe in seminary, you wouldn't be here, right? The fact that you're at church, even though you feel terrible, means you have faith in the what's going to happen today when you take that sacrament, because you're here. It doesn't matter what else else is happening in your God. So I think sometimes we discount our faith when our actions speak otherwise. I've had so many people say, I don't know about my faith. I'm like, I'm watching it come to church every week. You got plenty of faith because you're here. Even though you feel terrible, because something's happening in your life, you're here. That is faith, right? Don't discount that. And I think some, I think the adversary will do that to us and discount things that we're just manifesting everyday faith, just the walk every day to keep the faith to just push forward when you feel terrible. That is faith, right? And don't let that go. And then testify of it that you have the faith to at least take a step. That's all we needed. You didn't have the faith to get to the end. That's not what the Lord's worried about. Just take the next step and he's got you, right? Yeah.
Scott BrandleyWow. Well, this has been awesome. So can you guys talk a little bit more about what you hope people will get from the books that you've written?
Julie BujnowskiOur hope
Aaron & Julie’s hope for their book’s audience
Julie Bujnowskiis that it touches their heart and that it draws them closer to the savior, that their testimony um is strengthened, that they fill the spirit as they read, and that it helps them in some way. That was the whole purpose is to uplift others, uh, a way of ministering to uh others and sharing our stories and stories of our friends that have gone through very different uh life challenges, uh, but kept on going and enduring. So I hope it gives them hope. Just keep going, keep enduring, and that it just uplifts them and that they fill the spirit. That is the whole thing. If it can bring someone closer to Christ, we've done our job, right?
Aaron BujnowskiI can't say it any better than that.
Scott BrandleySo on on top of that answer, um, can you break out like who needs each book? When somebody has, you know, is some issue with faith. Obviously, the faith book I'm getting I'm guessing would be beneficial, but can you maybe how each book could help different
Who are Aaron & Julie’s books for?
Scott Brandleypeople?
Aaron BujnowskiYeah, that's a great question. So I would say again that the NASCAR Jesus book is really, I think, a foundational like prequel that says anybody who's just trying to, whether you're a new convert, whether you don't even know if you believe in God, whether you are a very experienced member, it really doesn't matter because we're all still on this faith journey and this pattern that we talked about, you're going to go over multiple times in your life. And just like we were listening to our own book and we were going through a new trial, like, well, I needed to hear that again. I wrote the thing, right? It's like I need that. The book about the temple, I think it can hit uh several people. Those who want to learn about it and are curious about the temple but haven't gone yet, it can be a form of temple preparation because again, we teach very basic doctrines. Like, for example, would you be surprised if you found out and you had never been to the temple, then you go there that you're gonna learn about Jesus Christ there, that you're gonna learn about the Holy Ghost there, that you're gonna learn about justice and mercy and sacrifice, priesthood and truth. I tell people, you started learning about the temple when you were in primary. Teach our children the things they're learning in primary and in youth and in our Sunday school classes is found in the temple. Elder Bernard said there's a few things we can't share outside the temple, but the basic purposes, principles, and truths of the temple, we can talk very openly about. And if we're in a class and we're learning, for example, about you know the creation, we can say you're gonna learn more about that when you go to the temple. It can be that simple. You don't have to get into the details or the exact language. We can say we learn about that there. So anybody who's learning and trying to understand what goes on there, or if you are, for example, our friends who were new members, they read our book before and they said, hey, we needed to have it after because it opened our eyes. Because after we got to see the the wonderful ordinances and ceremonies there, it actually was even more meaningful afterwards. So can be people there. Or we had a sister who had been a little away from the church for a little while and was coming back and getting her temple recommended once again and gave her a copy of the book, and she thought it was wonderful because she just needed to be refreshed and renewed because it had been a few years since she had gone. Um, or if you go every week, right? Um, again, there were so many temple books up there on my shelf that you may have already read. We're the only one that we know that actually said, Hey, we're gonna take it and learn from the temple. Maybe even as an experienced person, you'd say, I can gain something new because it'll help me just elevate what I receive when I go there. So we believe it could be for anybody who believes that they can go to that sacred house or want to learn about that sacred house and find the savior there. That is who the other book was written for.
Darla BrandleyAwesome.
Aaron BujnowskiThat's awesome.
Scott BrandleyWell, thank you for taking the time and effort to do that. I mean, it's the efforts of just everyday members like us, right? Doing something to move the work forward that helps. And when you combine all those efforts together, we can do amazing things.
Aaron BujnowskiThat's exactly right. I would actually love if we we've told people this, we've talked, we've done podcasts, and we're gonna speak at the end of this conference, and Julie can tell you a little bit about that conference that she's been involved in. But we would love if someone said, I actually wrote my own temple journal, my own temple book. And this is what insights I had, right? And I passed that to my children. That would be even for us the biggest thing to say. I actually wrote my own thing. It was just for me. It wasn't to be published, but it helped me think about my temple experience and my relationship with the savior in a different way. Yeah, love that.
Scott BrandleyAll right. So you
On creating a women’s conference + details
Scott Brandleymentioned the conference. Yes.
Darla BrandleyNow we want to hear about it.
Scott BrandleyI wanted to talk about this earlier, but can you tell us a little bit about that, what's happening and how that came about? Because it's pretty cool.
Julie BujnowskiYeah. So a few years ago, I had a Stake Relief Society president from Little Elm, uh, Jamie DeMaier, reach out to me and said, I am seeing these things with the sisters. They need to gather, they need to support, and they need to be uplifted. And here are a list of things that I'm seeing that's happening with families that are struggling and women who are struggling. And she's like, Would you like to come, you know, do a women's conference? And I was like, absolutely. And so it was myself and another sister, there were three of us, and we met with our stake presidents on a Zoom call and talked to them about here's a need that we have in our area. Do we have your support to create a women's conference? Well, as we reached out to more stake relief society presidents, more sisters wanted to be involved because they were seeing the need with the sisters in their stake. And so we had to go through the formalities of going to the area presidency, and we had to like type up a whole kind of like a business plan to the church to see if this is okay for us to do. And um, during that time, I was released. I served for about three and a half years, I think. But Sister De Meyer, she kept going and going. And so she reached out to me and said, Julie, it's happening. And I'm like, You're kidding. And she's like, No, it's happening. And will you be involved? I would like you to be part of a workshop committee, or could you and Erin speak? And I'm like, Oh, I'll be on the workshop committee. She wanted me to do both. So it is a privilege. I am telling you, it has been such a privilege to see um these amazing women come together. And so this took lots and lots of sisters, created a whole committee under the direction of our area leaders, and we came up with topics that we were gonna talk about. And then within 24 hours, we thought maybe we would open it up to like 2,700 sisters. It wasn't even 24 hours, and it filled up. And so she went back to our area presidency because they're like, here's the need. This is resonating, and women need this. And so they opened it up for us to have over 8,000 sisters. I think it's about 8,700 sisters, and so this is gonna be at the University of North Texas in Denton. Uh, they have been gracious to us to rent out their facilities for this wonderful event. It's September 19th. Uh, it is an all-day event. We have three devotionals, we have workshops of speakers. Uh, our opening devotional is gonna be President Sister Dunn, and then we have an afternoon devotional that's from Sister Neil Marriott, and then an evening devotional done by Elaine Dalton. And we just have the most amazing sisters who are gonna be speaking at these workshops. And you can go to it's USSWAwomen'sconference.com, and you can see our message, what the theme is, all the speakers, and register if you'd like to come. So I think there is still some openings. So it is gonna be an amazing event. We have lecture workshops in the morning and afternoon, and then we'll have things in the evening. We want people to register because we're serving dinner and we need to have a head count. Um, but I was sharing with you, not only are we gonna have lecture type workshops, we're gonna have interactive workshops also. And so the interactive workshops are things like line dancing, machong, yoga, and I mean just um incredible things. We even have one sister who's gonna be speaking um about mapping your patriarchal blessing and how to do that. We have just amazing, wonderful topics, all focused on the savior and all focused on how are we gonna uplift and bring our sisters closer to Christ and know that they are a daughter of God who was loved. And a wonderful opportunity to touch women's hearts and fill up their cup and help them keep on going and enduring.
Darla BrandleyYeah, I'd love that. I think this is absolutely amazing. I think that's gonna be so wonderful.
Aaron BujnowskiWell, and as I've been able to be a witness to this, to watch these sister leaders really um lead this under the direction of our priesthood leaders and the area of presidency and of course sponsored by the church, you can really see how these sisters are so talented. They follow the spirit, they follow the direction they've been given. But within that, they have such creativity and such innovation. I just am amazed every day, and I hear these stories and I can hear them on their calls. I will tell you that uh that that conference will be in good hands with these sister leaders because they they have been inspired and will bring inspiration to the attendees.
Julie BujnowskiYou know, I I think one of the neatest things to witness is as we pray about speakers to come and ask them and the responses back that they give us, they are so powerful. We've had one sister who replied back, she's like, I've been preparing for this. The Lord let me know, and I have been preparing. And we'll have a sister go, Oh, I don't think I'm qualified for this. But if the Lord wants me to, I will do it, you know. And so it's so wonderful to hear these spirit-filled messages back when you go and would like for you to speak. Here's a topic, or do you have a topic that you've had experience in in your life? And so it has been really a testimony uh strengthener to witness all of these women of faith. Oh, it just feels so good. It's like wonderful how the spirit works. And even in an email, you can feel it in their writing of their joy and their conviction of being members of the church. So it's been so I can't wait. It just to see how the it's gonna be fantastic. That is amazing. Yes, it's free, by the way. So there are no uh it doesn't cost anything to come. All you need to do is register. So awesome.
Scott BrandleyWow. Almost feels like you have to pinch yourself to like believe that it's that's really happening. That sounds so cool.
Julie BujnowskiNo, we wanted something for women, you know. Not everybody gets the opportunity to go to Utah and go to women's conference or education week. We have busy lives, we've got working moms, we've got single moms. I mean, life is fast, and so this gives them an opportunity to have something in their area. And I think the beauty of it is that if you can only come to a segment, you can come to a site. If you want to spend your whole day there, you can.
Darla BrandleyYeah. I love that. I love that.
Scott BrandleyYeah, and it's just just shows the power of just regular everyday members with a goal and with a vision and the things that that we can accomplish together, right?
Aaron BujnowskiAnd I was gonna say, and combined with the support and love of our priesthood leaders, you know, our area presidency, the brethren in Salt Lake, all those who have to approve these things, they that all need to be done and to see how they want to make sure there's a happening for the sisters is just amazing.
Darla BrandleyYeah, I agree.
Keep going!
Aaron BujnowskiYeah, wow.
Scott BrandleyAnd this has been so fun, you guys. Thanks so much for coming on. Um, it's been a really real treat for us to be able to hear your story for sure. Oh, thanks for yeah, you bet. So as we kind of wrap things up, um, we usually ask people to share any final thoughts that they have. We'd love to hear any final thoughts that you guys have to do. Should we go first?
Julie BujnowskiYeah, um, keep going. Keep loving those around you, have your arms open to minister and love others, and know that Heavenly Father is aware of you in your situation. He loves you, and he is there always. Even if you haven't reached out to him in prayer in a long time, he is always there waiting for you. So keep going and surround yourself with good people who love and support you, and just know that the atonement is a beautiful thing. Our savior, he loves us, he is our savior and our redeemer. And as you draw closer to him, you'll be able to carry those burdens on your shoulders, they will be made lighter. So know that he loves you, and that you can be a light to all of those around you also.
Aaron BujnowskiAnd and I would just add my testimony and invitation, come into the savior, come and find peace with him. He says, My grace is sufficient. There's nothing that he's lacking, and because of that, there's nothing that we could lack if we come to him. So come seeking him, come with an open heart, come with a broken heart, right? However your heart's breaking, that will give him a chance to heal you. And I will say that his healing is real, and his healing is will bring peace to you. Now, Julie said something
Covenants
Aaron Bujnowskiearlier in our testimony meeting today that I wanted to repeat in terms of covenants.
Julie BujnowskiSo, um, you know, as I've thought about um my covenants and how I feel about them, and when I pray, I thank Heavenly Father for the covenants that I have made with him. But those covenants are engraved in my bones and in my soul. And that's how much they mean to me. They're engraven in my soul. And to me, that's everything. Um, my family is connected through those covenants. I'm connected to God through those covenants. I'm so grateful to be a member of the church during this time to be able to make those sacred covenants.
Aaron BujnowskiAnd that just resonated with me because as I think about what has gotten us on our faith journey, it is the savior, and it's those binding covenants where we have bound ourselves willingly and freely to him. He will not let us go. And if we hold on to those covenants, we will not let him go. And he will wrap his arms around us, and as we read in the Book of Mormon, Nephi said, the arms of mercy were wrapped around me. That's the Savior giving you a big old hug because you're bound to him, because in your soul you are connected to him through those choices, and he won't let you go. No matter how much you feel like might be lost, he will always find you. And that's what we would leave anybody who's listening here with that message.
Scott BrandleyWow, I love that. I love the idea of us not letting him go because of the covenants that we've made if we hold to those. That's amazing. This has been an amazing treat. Thank you so much for sharing uh your story and your thoughts and your
Where to find Aaron & Julie’s books
Scott Brandleyexperiences with us. So, how do people find your books if they want to read your books? And then can you give us the address for the conference one more time?
Julie BujnowskiThe address for the conference, it's USSWAwomen's conference.com.
Aaron BujnowskiAnd it's easy to remember because it's US Southwest area. So it's US Southwest Area Women's Conference. You do a search on that and it'll find you really quickly. And then in terms of our book, um, it's available at Deseret Book. Both of them are. Some people prefer Amazon, and of course, you know, it's on Audible. So if you use Audible on Amazon, you can do there. Um again, our interest in the audiobook, Audible has it, Spotify has it, Apple Books, Google Play, you can get finding all those places. And oh, don't don't forget to do your five-second missionary work, hit that share button so that we can get their message out to the world and share their light with others. And if you guys have a story that you'd like to share, like Aaron and Julie, go to latterdaylights.com and we can have you on the show as well. So thanks again, guys, for being on. Thank you. And thanks everyone for tuning in. We will talk to you next week with another episode of Latterday Lights. Until then, take care.
