So a review would be tremendously appreciated. So do that and, as we've done again every show all the way back to number one free hypnosis guide, text the word hypnosis to 313-800-8510. Again, that's 313-800-8510. And that number will be in the show notes. It will also be on the website. If you go to the website, that's the phone number there. Phone number there. So text the word hypnosis. You'll have your PDF in a couple of minutes and also a link to leave a review, which would be greatly appreciated. As I said before, all right, I think we got everything covered. Okay, it's time.
Announcer: 4:43
That's how winning is done.
David Wright: 4:46
All righty, so this hold on. I misplaced my first sheet of the day. Uh-oh, where is?
Matt Fox: 4:57
it there. It is All right, here we go, here we go.
David Wright: 4:59
All right, I'm ready. Rick Roderick Morrow Okay, otherwise known to Buffalo Bills players staff as Slick Rick Slick Rick Is that, like Pickle Rick Is having an excellent couple of days. Okay, good for him. Roughly a week after receiving a shout out from Josh Allen in the quarterback's MVP speech at the NFL honors, the West hair auto group has gifted the longtime bills employee a brand new Chevy traverse. Wow, yeah, and the days following the MVP moment.
David Wright: 5:34
The 61 year old revealed in an interview with Buffalo's WKBW just how much it meant that Alan mentioned him in his acceptance speech, saying it was like a dream and that it moved him to tears. The mailroom worker also at some point there, shared that he takes the bus to work every day because he doesn't have a car. After 15 years of bus trips to one Bill's drive, morrow has himself a sweet new ride. He received the gift on Friday. In a video shared to WKBW's YouTube, a clearly emotional Morrow appeared awestruck by the gesture as he sat inside and toiled with the new whip. I don't know what that means A new whip, a new vehicle.
David Wright: 6:22
I got it A new toy, okay, yeah you made an impact on other someone in the car, presumably from west hair, tells morrow, you made an impact on josh allen and the rest of the organization, so you deserve it all right. For his part, morrow says he can't believe it. I'm the type of person where I'm like why me, but that's how I am. This is unbelievable, he tells WKBW's Jeff Russo. Sure, I thank everybody. I'm just an average guy. Just another day, another win for Bill's Mafia. I'm just a gigolo. I don't know if you saw I saw Josh Allen's speech. It was linked into this story.
Matt Fox: 6:58
Yeah, and he mentioned him out loud in his acceptance speech he did, but he also, the way he thanked his parents in that Not to take anything away from this guy but the words that he said about his parents and their support and everything. Good for this gentleman, Mr Morrow, to have a person like Josh Allen in their life.
David Wright: 7:16
Absolutely. And again, this guy he works in the mailroom. I mean he's not, he's probably not making a ton of money, but again room, I mean he's, he's not, you know, he's probably not making a ton of money, sure, but again the gesture again, the guys were taking a bus for 15 years.
David Wright: 7:34
You got a new whip. Yeah, you got a new whip, whip, whip, whip, whip. So, anyway, one, roderick morrow, the male, the guy who got the car, and josh allen and the bills organization. Yeah, great story. Thank you, winner of the week for sure that's how winning is done yes, it is so back to it. So we're here, matt. Matt, what's your favorite food?
Matt Fox: 8:06
That is a okay. Over the past week, or over the past my lifetime.
David Wright: 8:11
I don't know. Let's say in general, in general, if you had to have a meal, what would you pick today?
Matt Fox: 8:16
If I had to pick a meal because I actually haven't had dinner yet but right now I would love a big nice juicy steak with some mashed potatoes and some broccoli or asparagus. Nice, that sounds good yeah yeah it's a nice gluten-free, you know meal what?
David Wright: 8:33
what would I? I'm trying to think what I would like lobster, I'll get the reference. Meatloaf, mashed taters and gravy okra. Maybe some of that fine core bread your missus make, if she don't mind.
Matt Fox: 8:43
Oh my, that's a green mile.
David Wright: 8:47
Yeah, there it is it sounds like a good meal to me. It does, yeah, yeah, including the okra which I like hey, everyone's got like something you know, yeah, it's, it's, yeah, so, so we're talking. The reason I'm bringing food up is we're talking about diet and food and how that affects people's mental health. Yeah, yeah, because it does drive a lot of things.
Matt Fox: 9:09
The endorphins that release when you have a plate of food in front of you that you know you're going to enjoy. I think those endorphins start to take over and that's where the pleasure part starts to sink in. Am I off on that? Am I right on?
David Wright: 9:21
that? No, no, you're right about that. I mean enjoying food. Does there is an endorphin release with that. Now the whole question comes is what kind of food like specifically, if if all right, so let's say candy bars gives you that endorphin rush.
Matt Fox: 9:39
It's probably not the best thing to be eating in general, but if you have a Snickers, you know you, you turn from a mean person to a nice person, just like the commercials tell you yeah, yeah, because they don't lie. Let's talk about the environment, oh good for you. Let's talk about the environment that you're in. Okay, you're in at a ball game a football game, baseball game. You're having a hot dog yeah, with mustard on it, and you're enjoying a ball of beer and a beer, and that that food is bringing you pleasure.
Matt Fox: 10:07
Because of the environment that you're in right. Fast forward. Now you're at a movie theater. What happens when you're having at?
David Wright: 10:13
a movie do a popcorn popcorn and a coke, exactly, or slushy or something.
Matt Fox: 10:17
So food and mental health, because you you get pleasure out of the food that you're eating and then the environment that you're enjoying in. So there, there's a lot of parts to this conversation we're talking diet and I said popcorn and hot dogs, yeah, that's not really a good diet, probably not the most healthy thing in general let's say so.
David Wright: 10:39
So we know studies have been done throughout. You know the modern age as far as how health is related to food, and that includes physical health, but it also includes mental health. And many there there not have been. There's not nearly as many studies done on the effect of food has on mental health as opposed to physical health. So we know that we probably shouldn't eat foods high in fat content or sugar or salt or high in sodium, or I thought there's so many it's, it's there's a lot of rules when it when it comes to uh to uh that escalated quickly.
Announcer: 11:16
I mean that really got out of hand fast.
Matt Fox: 11:18
So I shared a story with you before we started recording. You know I had a procedure done last Monday, right or on a Monday a couple Mondays ago, and after the procedure we went out and we embarrassed ourselves with sushi. Well, how did you?
David Wright: 11:31
embarrass yourself.
Matt Fox: 11:32
There were so much sushi on the table for two individuals. Embarrassed ourselves that just kept on coming and did you finish it all?
David Wright: 11:41
Yes, oh well there there wasn't a single rice morsel left.
Matt Fox: 11:46
But after that procedure I was hungry and I knew what was going to bring pleasure to me and it was a smart choice, diet wise. But I didn't feel any regret. And that's where I think the mental health comes in, because you might sit there and eat a large pizza and all of a sudden you're regretting your choices.
David Wright: 12:03
Well, it's funny because, matt, you brought up one thing and we're going to get to that point, but there's this whole section as far as the psychological impact of having food with other people or in settings. Yeah, yeah yeah, so, yeah, we're definitely going to get into that. Okay, so definitely. Research shows a link between what we eat and how we feel. Okay, and so the typical example the Thanksgiving meal, where you gorge yourself and sit with your pants undone watching the lions lose.
Matt Fox: 12:32
Well, that's changed over the last couple of seasons it has. But yeah, I understand where you're going.
David Wright: 12:37
So and and you just have that, that bloated, uncomfortable, and some people get that with just normal meals, like just not overeating, eating a sensible portion, but the food itself can have an effect on you Not sitting well.
David Wright: 12:50
Yeah, not sitting. Well, it just doesn't make you feel good. So here's, here's some. I'm going to give you some tips and then we're going to get into specifics on foods. Okay, if that makes sense, it does. So in in, some of these things sound a little bit counterintuitive, but we'll get into it First.
David Wright: 13:06
Number one the first rule as far as mental health and diet is to eat regularly, three times a day. Three times a day, three meals, Three squares a day, yep. Now a lot of people who might be minding their weight might be like well, no, I don't want to eat three meals a day, but here's the thing. Thing, and physiology is all wrapped up. It's very complicated and I could you know I'm not a medical doctor by any means, but, but your physiology responds to what you put into your body. So if you're only eating one meal a day, your metabolism is not going to be as high as it would if you ate three meals a day, right, even though you're taking more calories in your your, your metabolism is going to make up for that, right, especially if you add activity to it.
Matt Fox: 13:51
Over the past couple of years, a diet regimen, if you will, has come up and it's called intermittent fasting. Yes, Okay, when it's. You don't eat for 16 hours, but then you eat for eight hours. You allow yourself that time, but you're still working out. So they're like you're going to burn fat faster with intermittent fasting. I tried that a couple of years, a number of years back, and I wasn't able to get to the 16-8.
Matt Fox: 14:18
The amount I was working out my body craved nutrients and food, and then I was making terrible choices with the food because I was craving it so bad, so the intermittent fasting does work for some people well, and even look at that.
David Wright: 14:33
So let's, let's take that intermittent fasting, because that is some of the things that that I've seen a lot, you know, in the past 10, 20 years. That has been more popular. So there's a 24 hour day. Take out eight, eight or nine hours for sleep, sure, so that leaves you with 13 hours in the day. Okay, so say you're going to combine or or make that eight hours.
Matt Fox: 14:54
The eating time that's 16 hours left, 24 minus eight right oh, I'm sorry, I said eight or nine, yeah, so you take eight hours out for sleep. Take eight hours out of the 24.
David Wright: 15:04
That leaves you at 16 okay, so, and then just take like an hour off end of the day, beginning of the day, let's say so. It leaves you about 14 hours, and then you're eight hours of eating. So you got like five hours left over. So, so, so it is it. It can be effective, and I, I and I don't want to down it, especially with people who have managed their weight with it. Um, the only thing you have to be careful of is that in that eight hours, you are having balanced meals and not just one, right?
David Wright: 15:32
You're getting proper calories Because what happens is Three square meals With intermittent fasting. You only have that eight hour window to eat. Let's say, you eat lunch at work. By the time you get home your eight hours is lapsed and you're like oh, I can't eat, I can't eat, I can't eat because I have to wait till tomorrow at 9 am or whatever that time starts. That's celery stock, really good, yeah, if you're having that.
Matt Fox: 15:53
If you're having that, you have a brain like a chicken. No, not just that, just eating fancy.
David Wright: 16:01
No, no, no, you start eating eggs. That's just eating fancy. Yeah, exactly, exactly. So again, the big thing is eat regularly. So the reason this works when you eat regularly it levels out your blood sugar levels over time. Sure when, if you don't eat for eight or 10 hours and then you eat, there's this spike back and forth that can physiologically make you feel either tired or just worn down, or even irritable.
Matt Fox: 16:25
You know, people get hangry feel either tired or just worn down or even irritable.
David Wright: 16:29
You know people get hangry, hangry and then you know if they're diabetic it's going to cause some additional issues with their, you know, liver and their kidneys and blah blah the other thing, and some of these sound like common sense, but we're going to talk about them. Stay well hydrated, doesn't matter what you're, doesn't matter when you're eating, if you're doing intermittent fasting or you're eating three meals a day, but what do?
Announcer: 16:50
you hide, you stay hydrated water are you sure?
David Wright: 16:53
water it? Well, it depends. It depends on each individual. So. So I'll give you, I'll give you a real life example. My blood pressure tends to run low. What happens if you drink a pbr? Oh, you're talking about beer.
Announcer: 17:07
Yeah, we'll get to that you say stay hydrated.
Matt Fox: 17:13
No water, no water, no.
Announcer: 17:17
You've had your limit today. You drink water.
Matt Fox: 17:22
So water From the tap has it got to be smart water? Has it got to be smart water? Is it got to be vitamin water?
David Wright: 17:29
Okay, here's the thing you can do water with some added stuff. You can even look at Gatorade or Pedialyte things like that. However, just remember, Pedialyte and also Gatorade have high levels of sugar and sodium. That's the other thing you have to be careful. If you have high blood pressure. Those are probably not the things you should be doing Very fair.
David Wright: 17:52
So, to stay hydrated with water, okay. And this does a couple of things. One, your body needs it, you're going to feel better if you're hydrated. But the other thing is it curbs some of your appetite, okay, so that you're not overeating during your meal times. So again, physiologically, that balance, you're going to feel better.
Matt Fox: 18:12
Understood. I should drink more water.
David Wright: 18:14
Okay, eat the right balance of foods and I'll get into that. Okay, so your brain needs some sort of fat to function. Okay, so we're talking about healthy fats, though we're not talking about Big Mac fats. Your brain needs some sort of fat to function. Okay, so we're talking about healthy fats, though we're not talking about Big Mac fats or French fry fats. All right.
Matt Fox: 18:33
So I'm going to share this with you. One of my favorite things to do is take a ripe avocado, cut it in half and then take out the pit and then just eat it raw, sure, just like right out of the casing.
David Wright: 18:46
Absolutely One of my favorite snacks and that's great because I'm gonna give you some foods that have healthy fats. Okay, go on. Uh olive oil, uh rapeseed oil, did what what is it?
Matt Fox: 19:02
what did you just say?
David Wright: 19:06
I don't know what we're yelling about Sorry that was the wrong one. It's written here as rapeseed oil. I don't you forget a stupid wiener name, is that?
Matt Fox: 19:20
Go on, I'm going to look up that, no.
David Wright: 19:22
I want to know now I'm going to hold off, because that threw me as soon as I was reading it. I'm like I don't even know how to say this.
Matt Fox: 19:28
It's one word Rapeseed yes, rapeseed oil. Is that how it's pronounced? R-a-p-e-s-e-e-d. Yeah, it's one word.
David Wright: 19:36
It looks like rapeseed it does, but I'm going to say rapeseed. Okay, do they have a oh?
Matt Fox: 19:43
dude. No, they don't. They don't have a pronunciation guide there no. The rapeseed oil is high in healthy fats.
David Wright: 19:49
There we go.
Matt Fox: 19:50
Yes, culinary rapeseed oil is distinguished from industrial rapeseed oil, which is not safe for consumption. Anyways, just say rapeseed Matt.
David Wright: 19:59
No, I don't want to.
Matt Fox: 20:04
What the fuck are you doing? I'm saying rapeseed.
David Wright: 20:08
I don't care what you say Okay, you can say that you can say that. What kind of radio show is this? So let's go on with our list Nuts, seeds, oily fish, salmon, avocados that goes right to yours. Milk and eggs, avoid trans fats. And here's the whole thing with trans fat Anything processed has trans fat.
Matt Fox: 20:34
It's about 98% of the stuff on the shelves.
David Wright: 20:39
So if you're going grocery shopping, anything in the aisles is processed, even cans. I mean you can get canned vegetables that are not processed, just water, but read the labels Tuna in water. Tuna in water is not processed Right, so you can look for it, but the big thing is to avoid trans fat. Right, so you can look for it, but the big thing is to avoid trans fat and really, again, trans fat just causes other health issues which are going to affect your mental health.
Matt Fox: 21:06
You're not going to feel good.
David Wright: 21:27
Trans fat right here Again, these are common sense things.
Matt Fox: 21:28
I know that people have said this, your doctor has probably said this but the vitamins and minerals in these, as opposed to processed foods, it's going to make you feel better mentally and physically. So when it comes to vegetables, a lot of folks are pretty picky. But then you've got some other experts that say some vegetables are not good for your digestion, like you know, because the seeds in tomatoes and all that stuff.
David Wright: 21:43
Well like, for example, some people have a hard time with acidic foods. Fair, which would be tomatoes. Okay, which would be Habanero?
Matt Fox: 21:51
Yeah, peppers, peppers, yes.
David Wright: 21:54
So yeah, so definitely, you have to eat what your body is telling you to, within reason, of course. The other thing is that if you are eating your three meals a day, you need to have protein with every meal. That is part of it, because a lot of people will go on a very non and I don't know what the there's so many diets out there in so many terms, but protein contains an amino acid that your brain uses and it actually is a mood regulator.
David Wright: 22:25
So protein can help you with your mood and the way your brain functions. Yeah, gut health is number five, and that's a very broad term and can vary, be very ambiguous, but gut health is again fruits, vegetables, beans, probiotics, your digestion to help you, to help you move this food. You said a colonoscopy, matt.
Matt Fox: 22:50
yeah, so when you probably got a prep for mine, it's coming up, oh yeah I gotta listen, I gotta set my appointment I did my, but I, I had my first one in 2020. Okay, and just a few weeks ago, I had my two-year follow-up. Five years later, nice, no, it's not nice. I waited.
David Wright: 23:07
Well, no, but nothing is wrong. That's the point.
Matt Fox: 23:10
Nothing is wrong. They still took their thing yeah. But gut health, and it's really interesting when you talk about gut health because it really does affect your mood.
David Wright: 23:21
Absolutely, it really does. Yes, it does.
Matt Fox: 23:24
Cause you can have this, be miserable because you're running to the restroom every three, four minutes, you know, yep.
David Wright: 23:31
Well, and the other thing that we throw in there is probiotics, which which helps with digestion. Now, that's not across the board.
Matt Fox: 23:46
Everybody should be taking them. Consult your physician. Certain people need help as far as having those probiotics and you know not to talk about a brand. Colturel is not the end-all, be-all when it comes to probiotics. There are a lot of things out there. You don't know what works for you, until you try it, exactly, exactly.
David Wright: 23:56
And the fifth thing that we're talking about is how caffeine affects your mood. Now, caffeine in excess can affect sleep patterns. It can affect your ability to rest, even in a waking state. Let's say you're at work and you're on your 11th cup of coffee, and it's 1 o'clock pm and you're like oh, I'm just going to have a lunch break, I'm just going to close my eyes for a little bit. You're probably going to have a hard time just tuning out. You're flying caffeine in your system.
Matt Fox: 24:29
As a coffee drinker in the morning, as a consumer of caffeinated drinks as well, whether it be Mountain Dew or Cola Coke or what have you. I have found, and like most people, if you have caffeine after a certain point in the day, you're messed up for your sleep that night, so you really have to cut it off.
David Wright: 24:50
Yeah, I'll give you a good example, Matt, because typically on weekend nights Kendra and I will head out, or Ethan and Kendra and I will go out out and it's like, oh, let's just go out to eat. So often we'll go to a place by our house, Big Bear Lodge. We'll give them a plug because the food is great. But I always get an espresso, martini or two, but I always know when I do that we're eating at like 5, 6 o'clock pm.
Matt Fox: 25:16
So you're drinking an upper and a downer at the same time, exactly.
David Wright: 25:20
But I will say when we come home from dinner and I go to bed, I'm not going to sleep right away.
Matt Fox: 25:27
Well, that bodes well for Kendra.
David Wright: 25:28
It's going to be like a midnight before I can even start to fall asleep. So it does affect you. And that again too much caffeine. So here's the thing. I know a lot of people like coffee. It's great. I drink coffee. I have two cups every day, or one big one. It depends if I buy out or do it in the office, but in moderation it's totally fine. The problem is that too much caffeine can cause stomach issues, digestive issues and affect your mental health. You get the jitters, if you know what I'm talking about.
Matt Fox: 26:01
if you get too much caffeine, yeah, in that your mind just starts to raise that and the jitters might be your mind racing.
David Wright: 26:07
It might be not able to focus on even physical jitters like shakes you know, because caffeine is just, it's just driving you, it's, it's pumping you up, you see you up.
Matt Fox: 26:17
you see this if those of you who see this steady as a rock but I shoot with this hand.
David Wright: 26:26
So yeah. So then the question comes up what should I eat? And we're going to answer that first thing. Next episode oh my goodness Is that supposed to be done.
