Top 10 Songs That Save Us - Part 2
Ever wondered what songs get stuck in a hypnotist's head? In this musical journey, David and Matt pull back the curtain on their personal playlists, sharing the tracks that have shaped their lives and continue to move them emotionally.
David takes us through his affection for what he playfully calls "faux rock bands" of the 80s—Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon—with particular fondness for "Separate Ways" and its distinctive guitar harmonics. His enthusiasm for The Doors reveals a deeper connection, having "consumed every book ever written" about the band, while his discovery of Muse years after their initial popularity demonstrates how great music finds us when we're ready for it.
Matt brings a contrasting musical palette to the conversation, from Coldplay's "Clocks" (which he insists feels like a personal performance when experienced live) to electronic tracks by Spunk Shine and Shapeshifter that instantly transport him into relaxation mode after stressful workdays. His passion for Hamilton showcases how experiencing the same music from different physical perspectives—whether on Disney+ or from opposite sides of a theater—creates entirely new impressions of familiar material.
What makes this episode particularly compelling is how each song selection reveals something profound about its chooser. When Matt describes Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries as having "the voice of an angel" or David explains how Earth, Wind & Fire's vocal harmonies in "Fantasy" speak to his musical training, we witness music's ability to connect with our unique experiences and emotional wiring.
The conversation becomes a fascinating exploration of how we develop relationships with songs—some through technical appreciation, others through emotional association, and many through shared moments with loved ones. As streaming has changed our listening habits, their nostalgic reflections on experiencing albums from start to finish serve as a gentle reminder of what we might be missing in today's single-track world.
Whether you're seeking new additions to your playlist or simply enjoy hearing passionate people discuss the music that moves them, this episode offers a window into how deeply personal our soundtracks can be. What songs would make your list?

Announcer: 0:45
Spawned in the hellfires of Motown. Take him to Detroit. No, no, not Detroit.
David Wright: 0:53
No, no, please, Anything but that no.
Announcer: 0:57
Stationed in Drambuie. It's worse than Detroit. We did not have, as a unit, the confidence that we felt like we needed to beat Detroit. Let's go to Detroit Now you're talking brother. I don't think so. He plays for Detroit now. Do they have many farms in Detroit?
Matt Fox: 1:14
Detroit to Michigan.
Announcer: 1:16

All right, yes, please. It is cool. It's time. Matt, here we go.
Announcer: 4:15
Here we go, that's how winning is done All right.
David Wright: 4:19
So we always love animal stories, and this is another one. Okay, matt, you're probably going to see it in a minute here, I will. A few months ago it probably going to see it in a minute here, I will A few months ago it seemed like he was the dog no one wanted. Now he's got a new leash on life, oh my goodness, with lots of seniors doting over him. Okay, the black and gray Shih Tzu was found wandering the streets of Austin, texas. His fur was overgrown and matted. He had no tags and no owner looking for him either. The seven-year-old pup had likely been homeless for months. That's just sad in and of itself. I'm like heartbroken over here.
David Wright: 4:53
Yes, he was found by an employee of the Philomena, an assisted living center in Kyle, texas, run by Priscilla Duren. She's a lover of dogs, so she took him in to her vet, where they discovered he had a microchip, a name and an owner. But when Ms Duran contacted them about Chewy Chewy's, the dog's name, they said they didn't want the pooch anymore. I wonder if he makes that noise and they. This part of the story makes me mad. Let me read this sentence Okay, and then we can be mad together. Okay, when Mr and contacted them about Chewy, they said they didn't want the pooch anymore and they even quickly blocked any phone number she called from thwarting any more communication attempts. Come on, so they just leave this dog out in the wilderness to survive without any regard for its safety or health. That, that, just really that. That's irksome. Yeah, it is. It is very irksome yes that's yes, come on.
David Wright: 5:56
Yeah, I'm gonna do better. What in blazes are you talking about? No, no, it's. It's terrible. I'm looking for something good to address these idiots, but I want to do better.
Matt Fox: 6:06
He have a brain like a chicken that works, yeah.
David Wright: 6:08
It was clear Chewie needed a new home and that's where the Philomena would come to the rescue. The Philomena is the retirement community, thank you. I said what if he's our dog? Durin told the Free Press the Hayes Free Press, because at that point it became very clear that Love, that he's a regular visitor to the front office, greeting all those who enter and exit. On some days he's dressed up looking like he's going out on the town.
David Wright: 6:53
Chewy regularly joins the residents for Scrabble nights, lazing in their laps and getting lots of scratches behind the ears. He enjoys frequent rides on the residents' walkers and leaves a trail of happiness everywhere he goes. Our residents understand what it's like to start fresh somewhere new. Duren said Nice. Just like they found a welcoming place here, chewy has too. He's more than a pet. He's part of our community, although he's not an official therapy dog. Four-legged Bundle of Joy provides those same services. Not an official therapy dog. Four-legged Bundle of Joy provides those same services. For instance, the pooch works wonders with patients suffering from dementia.
David Wright: 7:29
And some residents who struggle to communicate are suddenly sharing a few words to express how happy Chewy makes them feel. I love this. I've not seen him pass anybody who does not grin ear to ear by seeing this little dog says Duren. Not grin ear to ear by seeing this little dog says Duren. Even in memory care, when words are not enough, you realize. When an animal and somebody with dementia warns, words are not necessary, nope, dogs are just proof that actions speak louder than words. Game. The wayward dog had no home and has found a new one, and now he's making the place a little brighter for everyone who lives there. Thank you, do you want to see Chewy? I want to see Chewy.
Announcer: 8:08
Of course I want to see Chewy.
David Wright: 8:08
This is fantastic, Matt. Let me show the camera and then I'll give it to you. Look at that. See, he's dressed up. He's dressed up to go out on the town.
Matt Fox: 8:16
It's Chewy Elton John. There you go, Matt. Oh, he's adorable.
David Wright: 8:24
Come, there you go, matt. Oh, he's adorable. Yeah, come on, little Shih Tzu.
Matt Fox: 8:27
Come on, but the sunglasses are amazing. It does look like Chewbacca with sunglasses. Yeah, it's kind of yeah.
David Wright: 8:34
He does have that. I mean, it's an apropos name. Yes, absolutely so big shout out to the Philomena, miss Duran and Chewy. Thank you, what a great story, definitely winner of the week.
Announcer: 8:57
That's how winning is done.
Matt Fox: 8:59
Yes, so back to it Tight Tight. That was tight Tight, all right, okay, tuco, back to it tight tight.
David Wright: 9:05
That was tight, tight. All right, okay to go. So we're we're talking about our favorite songs and and, and just to preface it, this is part two. If you've not listened to part one, you can go back or just do it after this one. You're going to get all the information anyway, sure? But matt and I are just kind of sharing with each other, because we did a couple of episodes on music and in mental health and how it can positively affect your mental health. So we're talking about these songs that we like or enjoy or make us feel good, whatever the case is or whether they resonate with us for with some kind of feeling or message. So I will go. I guess I'll go first again, matt, yeah, please do, let's go to journey.
David Wright: 9:42
Journey was a great 80s band. So here's the thing I'm very influenced by the 80s because, yeah, please do, let's go to Journey. Journey was a great 80s band. So here's the thing I'm very influenced by the 80s because I was in high school in the 80s, I was in college in the 80s, I started grad school in 90s, so I just missed it, but that's fine, but a lot of my musical thing. So in the 80s there was this whole influx of I call them I don't mean this in a derogatory manner, but these faux rock bands from the 80s, and when I say that I mean bands like Journey, styx, reo, speedwagon, boston. It was like they all came up in the late 70s and the 80s and then they just kind of disappeared. Styx was another one.
Matt Fox: 10:24
I don't know if I mentioned that one, you did, mr.
David Wright: 10:26
Roboto. Yeah, oh yeah, don't worry about that. But there's a lot of great music coming out of that era too. So with Journey, again a lot of great songs. But I have to go with Separate Ways that just if that comes on, I just I'll just stick with it. I love it.
Matt Fox: 10:46
This past few weeks we were redoing the bathroom in our basement and throughout the entire process we were listening to 70s, 80s and 90s music on Pandora yes, and every once in a while you just get a gem that would pop up, whether it be Fleetwood Mac or Journey or hollow nose yes, stevie nicks, or just all these like rush popping.
Matt Fox: 11:10
Yes, pink floyd, they just we just come up and separate ways to come up when we all three of us sit down the bass and I remember hearing it. I don't know if the other two recognize, but I'm like that's a good song.
David Wright: 11:22
Yeah, oh no, it's great that whole opening and I'm going to geek out for a minute. Matt Go ahead. I can't say I play guitar, but I like to mess with it, you've been taking lessons. Yeah, yes, so separate ways, that there's this guitar riff that brings it out. It's like dun dun dun, dun dun dun. But there's this like I don't know, if you know, there's this bing bing, I have to go back and listen to it.
David Wright: 11:45
Listen to it. It's harmonic on the fifth fret and to play that in the midst of strumming is really difficult. Yeah, I mean to me. I mean for you skilled guitarists out there it's probably not a big deal. But again, it's just right from the opening line. You're just into it. It's just right from the opening line, you're just into it. It's just like that great guitar riff. Love that, yeah.
Matt Fox: 12:10
Man, you got some really good songs on your list.
David Wright: 12:12
Well, I mean, like I said, these are like the things that I like to listen to. And this is just the first one for this episode. Right, absolutely. I got tons more coming up.
Matt Fox: 12:20
So there is a band and they're very popular, okay, and a lot of people will say that I swing the other way for listening to them. It's Coldplay.
David Wright: 12:30
Oh, okay, I mean, I'm not a Coldplay fan, but I can appreciate the music, the music, all of their music, is just it's amazing To see them live.
Matt Fox: 12:41
You can, you know you, listen to the album. It's laid's laid back, it's you know you. It may just kind of gives you that energy, but if you go and see them live. And you see, mr martin, do chris martin do what he does. And the music itself, and the lights, the light show and just everyone's singing along the. The song clocks from their album rush of blood to the Head is one of their more popular songs. When I first heard that song the piano in the beginning, it grabs you.
David Wright: 13:10
Yeah.
Matt Fox: 13:11
And then the beat comes in and you are just, you get pulled into it. But then you go and see them in concert and then they play that song and you hear the piano, when Chris Martin is on stage, and he's playing the piano and he's performing, and he's performing for you.
Matt Fox: 13:30
Yes, he's there with 20,000 other people but it feels like he's performing just for you, because that's how that song him in the same room. Yeah, yep, that's just how it made me feel yeah, but yeah, that entire album was great. And they've got so many great songs after the fact Nice.
David Wright: 13:52
Yeah, no, no judgment there. I you know, like I said, I'm not a huge fan, but I can appreciate it. I do like some of their stuff. And here's the thing I can like most any band, certain songs by any band. I mean, of course I have my favorites, but yeah, I got you. Yeah, that's all good, thank you.
David Wright: 14:09
Okay, back to the 80s for another one of these 80s, what I call the faux bands sticks. Okay, mr Roboto yeah, do you know the whole story behind that album? I don't, I don't. So the lead singer, dennis DeYoung, who had a falling out with the group later on in their existence, thought that they needed to be more theatrical, so that Mr Roboto album was a rock opera. Oh, yeah, I can see that that was the whole plan for that whole album. And it's a story because you got mr roboto, you got heavy metal, poisoning, okay, but but it's, it's all designed to be one big story or like one big opera. And the other band members were like this is not what we like, this, this is not what we're here for. And Dennis DeYoung left shortly after that and he also had an I don't know what his chronic exhaustion issue, so he couldn't tour, so they had to replace him anyway, but there was a rift between he and the other band members.
David Wright: 15:21
Interesting, but with Sticks again, it's hard to pick out one song. But Blue Collar man has to be. As soon as that comes on, I'm locked into it.
Matt Fox: 15:30
I'm taking your list home with me. Yeah, I'm just going to say I'm taking this home with me.
David Wright: 15:33
I mean, it's just it's enjoyable that the organ starts in and the guitar in. That is unbelievable. Tommy Shaw, one of the most underrated guitarists In rock in the rock world. Okay, I mean, he was with the Traveling Wilburys for a while, that's one of them.
Matt Fox: 15:52
Yes, I've got stories about Traveling Wilburys, but we'll save it for another time.
David Wright: 15:58
So, yeah, that's again. I could pick a ton of songs from Styx too. I can go through their whole catalog and like most of them Absolutely. Man, yeah, I'm taking your list home, okay, and like most of them Absolutely.
Matt Fox: 16:09
Man, yeah, I'm taking your list home. Okay, you can do that. All right, so you're going to have to take my list home too.
David Wright: 16:13
Yes, absolutely. I'm going to, because I want to dive into all of these.
Matt Fox: 16:17
So, as you already probably know, I'm into the EMD electronic music and what have you yeah? There is a couple of groups. I'm going to group these two into the same. Because these group these two into the same? Because they're both. These songs, both have the same meaning for me. Okay, and it just helps me to relax. Yeah, I'm in my car, I'm driving home from work and this comes on and I immediately go into relaxation mode.
Matt Fox: 16:40
And the two groups are spunk shine and shape shifter don't know either one, I promise, I know, I know spunk Shine has a song called Smoked and it's just a ambient beat that just puts you into an immediate relaxation.
Matt Fox: 16:56
Oh, that's awesome and the beat comes in and then the drum comes in and you hear it and you just start to groove while you relax. Summer Haze by Shapeshifter does the exact same thing. It puts you into that state of I am going to not worry about the world around me right now, and these two songs do that for me. When I would actually set up my rig for weddings or an event, I would throw those two songs on back to back, because you feel like you're really having to rush around and do all this Once I got my music started. That's where I would start my mental journey for the evening because it would just put me in a state of relaxation.
Matt Fox: 17:34
Fantastic, Both of these songs. I want you to listen to them, and on whenever, but you will. You'll see why. Yes, Because the beat that comes in it just puts you into that state of groove and you just move on and you're just happy with your day after that.
David Wright: 17:51
Awesome, thank you, yeah, I'm looking forward to because I'm a big. I do this, matt. From time to time I'll find a band that I've never heard of and I'll start listening to them and then I'll just get pulled in. And there are a couple of ones, a couple of great bands, that I found this way. Are you familiar with the Bravery I am? That's a band I just found within the last 10 years and went through their own and, of course, they're not recording anymore. I think they only have three albums total, but again, fantastic music. The other one was the heavy. I have to look them up, okay, because again that's another one that I found fairly recently that I'm just locked into the sound. It just sounds good All right Fair enough.
David Wright: 18:36
All right, I guess I'm up. I guess you are. Do you know Queens of the Stone Age? I do, no one knows.
Matt Fox: 18:43
No one does know Queens of the Stone Age no one knows. No, no, don't shut me up. I think one of my daughters, I think my youngest. I think they kind of dabbed into Queens of the Stone Age a little bit. Yeah, or it might be. Oh, Pierce the Veil, that's what it was.
David Wright: 19:01
My bad. Oh, and that could be.
Matt Fox: 19:02
Yep, my bad, so do you know that song I do. Oh, okay, it's been a while since I've heard it, but yes, I know that song Again.
David Wright: 19:10
Just great guitar, it's just great. And the guy here's one where the singer doesn't match the voice. Yeah, Because if you see videos of Queens of the Stone Age, the guy's a white ginger. His voice doesn't match his appearance at all Right At all. Yeah, I love that. It's funny because you see this guy and you think that's Opie. How is he singing this? Yeah, you know what I mean.
Matt Fox: 19:39
So I'm going to kind of stay in that realm with this next song Okay. Okay, but the voice matches who you're looking at. Okay, all right. And it's Dolores O'Riordan, okay, lead singer, singer, the voice of the Cranberries. Yes, yes, you know she's past. She had the voice of an angel, uh-huh, and to you know, their music is wonderful.
David Wright: 20:05
You know, when Zombie came out it kind of changed everyone's perception of Dolores Well, and they were playing that when that came out out it was on 89x constantly.
Matt Fox: 20:13
Yeah, that was the alternative station back then, which is now back. Right it is.
David Wright: 20:15
It is yes that's why I brought that up.
Matt Fox: 20:16
Thank you, yeah but then to actually go to pine knob and hear her voice live it, it just exponentially took you to like that I, this is an angel singing it. Really she had such an amazing voice and to hear it live, just I'm happy to say that I got to experience that before you know her unfortunate passing Right, but Dolores, and her song and her music and her, the way she sang, the band, her, her band, the band cranberries, oh my God.
Matt Fox: 20:46
They are geniuses with their instruments and what they produce. And Dolores just took them to the next level, nice, and they have a very big part of my heart.
David Wright: 20:56
No, and I remember them. That was a huge part of the late 80s, early 90s. Yep, it sure was.
Matt Fox: 21:03
Absolutely yeah, yeah, go on, yeah, yeah, okay, yeah, yeah, go on yeah, okay, this one could be to me.
David Wright: 21:12
it could be obscure, but only because I like it so much I feel like it should be mainstream. Okay, the Smithereens. Oh yeah, a Girl Like you, uh-huh.
Matt Fox: 21:25
It's kind of like the same local H, you know. Yes, yes, yes, local H of the Smithereens were kind of in the same vein. Yes, yes, yes and Mrs Robinson when they did that one.
David Wright: 21:33
Yes, yep, that's another, yeah, yeah.
Announcer: 21:35
Yeah, I got you baby no.
David Wright: 21:37
I love that song. I love the sound they had too. I know they're. I don't know if the guitarist is dead or the singer Somebody singer. Somebody died in that band. It's a vague memory. You might be thinking in excess. No, I knew, I knew michael hutchins dying. Yeah, actually, I saw an excess live. Ah, jealous. I saw him at the pine at silverdome a little jelly.
David Wright: 21:59
Yeah, before. He was way back when, like I think, kendra and I were dating at the time, so I had to be at least 30 years ago, because he died probably 20 years ago. I mean, it's been a while, okay, yeah.
Matt Fox: 22:10
That's a good song.
David Wright: 22:11
Yeah, smithereens, I love Smithereens.
Matt Fox: 22:15
Jamie and I went to a concert earlier this year. We saw the Damned.
David Wright: 22:18
Oh, wow, yeah, Really yeah, it was a good show. It's funny to see some of these because we just went to the Fillmore was it last summer? Was at last summer and saw Adam Ant. Wow, yeah, yeah, yeah. And again, just like these not really obscure but not mainstream artists, but they're still touring, they're still doing concerts. Were his goody, two shoes doing well, that was his concourse. I will say my only disappointment with the Adam Ant show the sound was awful. Oh man, the sound mix was terrible.
Matt Fox: 22:46
That was a very unique sound, that Adam. Ant had back in the day with ant music and what have you. It was a very eclectic sound that he would put out. Man, I'm enjoying this yeah, absolutely. All right, so there is a group out of England Europe area.
David Wright: 23:02
Yeah.
Matt Fox: 23:04
And their song was in a movie, and the movie was called Trainspotting Ewan McGregor one of his first films that he ever did. Mm-hmm, and they were at a club during the movie and there was a song playing and it was by the group Underworld Okay, and the name of the song is called Born Slippy. Okay, Born Slippy is one of the. Now it's one of the biggest and most popular techno dance songs out there, Ah, okay right, and it just. It's nine and a half minutes of bang your head up against the wall.
Matt Fox: 23:35
Nice I don't care how many drops of acid you've taken. It is such a iconic club song that there's been a number of mixes and there's the Darren I think it's Darren, anyway, one of the mixes I've listened to in the past. It is a really, really good mix, but the original it's just, it's a, it's a banger for nine minutes, and it's just.
David Wright: 23:58
I need your list, man. I I gotta spend a day over the weekend this coming weekend and just I I'm gonna listen to all I'll have to just text all this?
Matt Fox: 24:06
no, no, no, I'll just take all your sticky notes all right, fair enough. I'm just crossing them off as I go through them. We might be over 10 at this point.
David Wright: 24:13
I don't know no it's fine, I didn't count, I just listed as many as I could, but at some point I had to pare it down because I could have 100 pages. I really could. Okay, going back again. Doobie brothers oh yeah, long train running smoking, one of the best I I've. I'm not kidding matt, if that's my spotify like, if I'm listening to my spotify list, I will replay that 40 times and listen to it every single time, like I've. I've just the first time hearing it. Love this. It's just a great groove, a great song you know yeah again I want your list no, I know.
David Wright: 24:57
No, it's I. I visit that so much.
Matt Fox: 25:00
I visit that all the time, yeah all right, so you'll like this next pick yeah fleetwood mac oh I, I could again their whole, their whole catalog, the whole catalog, yep. However, if you want to experience, stevie Nicks is actually coming into concert here soon. Yeah, I knew that, yep, and. But there is and I mentioned this during the man Cave Happy Hour but there is a cover band that we saw in the Virginia area, yep, and this cover band's name is Tusk T-U-S-k from the song tusk from fleetwood mac.
Matt Fox: 25:31
Thank you right and they were spot on all of their music. We had a couple of teenagers at the show with us and we were kind of worried that they wouldn't really be like enjoy it because they wouldn't know the music right. But they started playing songs. I'm like like, hey, kiddo, this is from Stranger Things. Ah, right, and that pulled them into it and then they started to pay attention, but still the fact that Fleetwood Mac and themselves. There's so many songs I know, I just can't pinpoint one.
David Wright: 26:03
Well, you know what? Because you mentioned Tusk, that's the one I groove to, that's the one I kind of gravitate to. I like it all. Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing any of the rest of it, but I like that song. It's on my playlist.
Matt Fox: 26:19
That 70s, 80s, 90s mix that we were listening to. They would come up all the time and every single one of them. I'm like, yeah, it just kept on scrubbing away.
David Wright: 26:31
It just put me in a mood. That's fantastic. All right, next one. Next one Earth, wind and Fire. Which one? Fantasy? Oh, okay, I thought you were going to say Groove, love it. I thought you were going to say Groove, I like Groove, I like Shining Star, uh-huh.
Matt Fox: 26:51
But Fantasy has the best harmonics. It is just amazing If you really listen.
David Wright: 26:52
Do you like the Ozzy Osbourne version of September? No, I don't mind it. I like it because I do like September. September is probably my second favorite earth, wind and fire songs. But fantasy if you listen to the vocal harmonies, especially in the chorus, there's a shift in it. It's just it, just it, just I. I. Maybe I notice it more because I, I, I grew up playing an instrument and singing and like like I know how to read music. Maybe I'm more aware of that than other people, but sure, but there is a is a, it's just. The harmonies were so good and philip bailey is their lead singer is just unbelievable. I love this, yeah.
Matt Fox: 27:33
I've got one more and you've got one more, okay. Or maybe I've got one more, you got one, okay. Anyway, that's fine, yeah. So my last of two is the sugar cubes. Okay, no, the sugar cubes. I've heard of them. Yes, they have a song. I've never listened to them. All right, they have a song called Birthday Mm-hmm and it's the Justin Robertson mix, and this is the first song that I played as the house DJ at Main Street Billiards here in Rochester.
Matt Fox: 28:00
Michigan oh wow, that's going back. It was the first song I played on a Thursday night, my first time DJing there, because it was my birthday, my first time there Sure, in there, because it was my birthday my first time there, sure, and it's just an amazing mix. Yeah, it's a little laid back, but then the beat comes in. You're like oh yeah, okay and then the real beat kicks in. It's just a really fun song.
Matt Fox: 28:20
Nice, that just kind of opened me up to being myself as a dj if you will fantastic and I I can thank, thank my really good friend, aaron, for saying that should be your first song. Yes, because he's all about throwing curveballs at crowds, right?
David Wright: 28:37
I mean yeah, if you give them exactly what they expect, they're not surprised, right, it could seem boring, yeah.
Matt Fox: 28:43
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. That's my second to last one, okay.
David Wright: 28:48
Okay, and we mentioned a little bit well, maybe it was during man Cave, I don't remember ELO.
Matt Fox: 28:54
Yes, you mentioned ELO during the man Cave.
David Wright: 28:56
yeah, Mr Blue Sky yeah, just a jam. It's a jam. And seeing them in concert, that was their encore. That was the last song they did, of course.
Matt Fox: 29:08
For Marvel to put that song and guardians of the galaxy was part brilliant was so much fun to see and that's what really go. Oh yeah, that's a really good song.
David Wright: 29:18
That made that song popular absolutely all over again and the thing I've loved, the song way before that yeah and then everybody's loving it. Now I'm like damn you.
Matt Fox: 29:27
I liked it before you, but to see baby group doing what he's doing, doing the whole thing while the action is going on it's juxtaposed Dancing around yeah it's so great.
David Wright: 29:36
Yeah, it's so fantastic.
Matt Fox: 29:39
Thank you for that. Yes, no, I Thank you for that last one.
David Wright: 29:41
Yes, that's a good one. All right, so I'm going to end on a sappy note throw two more in.
Matt Fox: 29:51
So, all right, that's fine. Yeah, then I got more, just to finish my list, all right. So dmb dave matthews, yeah, and there's a. There's a number of songs that he has that I gravitate towards, and one of them is you and me, yeah, and that. If for that, that is just a sentimental song for me and you know who I've shared it with and just when I did share it, and it just created a very special moment for the two of us and we just. That song will stick with me for a very long time. Nice, if not forever.
David Wright: 30:20
No, understandable, you have that connection. Yeah, that's fantastic. Okay, one of my favorite bands of all time. I can list my favorite bands. Well, the Doors are one of them. Okay, love the Doors. I have read and listened to every single thing they have ever done. Every book that was written. I have consumed it, Morrison.
Matt Fox: 30:41
Hotel is one of my favorite albums.
David Wright: 30:43
Well, the original the Doors, that is probably one of the best albums of all time. I mean, I'm just saying from beginning to end and there's a flow. And here's the thing you mentioned. Sorry for the youngsters out there, we grew up in a time where you went to a store, you bought an album, you opened it up, you had liner notes, you put the album on and listened to it from start to finish, uh-huh. And people don't listen to music that way anymore. Albums were set up to tell a story, that they put songs in certain orders and in specific ways to keep people listening. That was the whole point of it. And the Doors, again, I just love everything they've done, but even to pick one of those is so tough. But I'll go Love Me Two Times, oh.
Matt Fox: 31:32
Love Me Two Times times. I mean, it's just a fun song. It's short, but but it's, it's, it's you know it makes you feel good. Yeah, it's good, it's a good song, yep I can sing it yeah um two more.
David Wright: 31:45
Hotel california by the eagles. Sure, that's just a standard. That just sits there, okay, do you? Do you have anything else? I do? Okay, go ahead. There's two of them. Okay, I got one more, but we'll get back to it. Yeah, go ahead.
Matt Fox: 31:58
I'll give you my two, okay, and they're in two very different genres. Yeah, that's fine. So again, I'm a Broadway guy, yep. And I will say original cast on Disney Plus first. Yeah, and that got me into the play Hamilton Right and the music, so you're able to listen to it, you're able to understand it, you can hear it, but then you go and see it live. Totally different.
Announcer: 32:26
Oh yeah.
Matt Fox: 32:27
It's the same music. But, you got different people singing it Absolutely Different musicians.
Matt Fox: 32:32
Yes, we saw it from one side of the stage the first time, and the second time we saw it I saw it twice, okay, but from the opposite side, because what we realized is that we wanted to see it from a different angle. Sure, and then, when we're watching the Disney Plus, we see that there's a lot of action happening on this side of the stage. Oh right, so we got second level, first row, and it felt like they were talking again, right?
David Wright: 32:56
to us Nice.
Matt Fox: 32:57
Nice, singing right at us. So the entire cast of the Hamilton, the entire play, from front to back. It's you listen to the words and the writing. It's incredible, it really is. Yes, all right, so I'll leave you with this last one. Yes, it's by Orbital. Ok, very different genre, orbital, and it's his song Halcyon, and on and on, and it was used in the Mortal Kombat movie.
David Wright: 33:26
Oh OK.
Matt Fox: 33:26
The first one.
David Wright: 33:28
I honestly didn't see the movie, but I know what you're talking about as the younger brother is ascending or what have you?
Matt Fox: 33:34
that's. The song that's being played is by Orbital Halcyon, and on and on. But then there's a live version that I found and it's mixed with Bon Jovi shot through the heart and the way it's mixed together. And then you hear something else come in. It's another 80s icon. I'll share it with you and I will let you experience it the way I did. I had no flippin idea that it was about to happen, so I'm not going to share that with you.
David Wright: 34:03
On this podcast? Yeah, because I'm going to listen to it and catch it. Okay, good, good, yes, perfect, okay, my last one, and again, I, I love a lot of bands. My favorites are the Doors. My other favorite is Muse. I'm just a huge Muse fan, matt Bellamy. So here's the thing you can listen to their recorded stuff and it sounds great. They're great musicians, they're great songs. When you see them live it is Very different. They're from a different world, especially matt bellamy on the guitar. It is unbelievable the talent this guy has. But for muse and again, to break it down to one song is nigh impossible. But because, because, again, I, I listen to every album of theirs all the way through, all the time. But knights of sidonia, it's a fantastic. It's got that arena anthem feel Nice. It's just you know the song, right, I do.
Matt Fox: 34:56
Yes, yes, it's been the other one the Black Holes and Revelations.
David Wright: 35:00
I think it's on that album.
Matt Fox: 35:02
But that's the one that always pops up on my Pandora. Oh okay yes, and I enjoy that song, if you look up the album?
David Wright: 35:09
oh geez, I'll up the album. Oh geez, I'll tell you when we're done. But but, but they're, they're honestly, you can pick any album of theirs and and some of them have different sounds. I don't know if you heard their their most recent one I have not, which is will of the people. I have not heard that there. There's, there's a couple songs in there. You just need to listen to the album, got it. There's a couple of them. Go into they, they, they delve into metal because because muses always had a specific songs had a really like like hard metal sound like assassin. I don't know if you know that song right off hand. I don't. It's from I don't think it was on black holes and revelations. I might have been on another one, but they get into that heavy and in one of the songs on this new album, just it's just like metal for for like 30 seconds. Oh man, fantastic, all right, yeah I, I do some metal yeah absolutely all right, fantastic.
David Wright: 36:06
So that folks is matt and i's kind of favorite music I. I mean, you have some very interesting stuff, matt. Yours is very more obscure than mine. It tends to be, but that's fine, because I love finding new music. This is one of my things. Like I said, muse I found way after they were popular, sure, like probably 15 years after they hit Interesting. And then once I found them, I went through the whole catalog and just fell in love with them. Huh, so I find a lot of bands this way. After the fact, nothing wrong with that, yeah, which is great. So that is our music countdown. Folks, again, I went along with our last couple of episodes regarding music and mental health, but hopefully you can like, if you've not listened to any of the things that Matt and I have talked about, take a listen. Maybe something will resonate with you, maybe you'll enjoy it. You'll find a new favorite band.
David Wright: 36:55
It's always possible, you might be just as happy as we are, you could be right Before we go. Folks who needs a home? Lorax Lorax. This is funny, matt. When you see the picture, you're going to understand exactly Is thing, or? Yes, well, I'm assuming that's where the name came from.
Matt Fox: 37:16
Yeah, the lorax, okay he's a mini schnauzer mix born in 2017 so that would make him what seven, eight, yeah, yeah male, 10 pounds.
David Wright: 37:21
Dog friendly, yes, cat friendly, unknown sure. Kids over eight. Okay, activity level is low. Okay, here's lorax. Needs a home, doesn't't he look like a Lorax?
Matt Fox: 37:33
He kind of does yes that's what I thought. Give that kid a haircut.
David Wright: 37:37
What the yeah, he's kind of unkempt.
Announcer: 37:40
He's unkempt, he's a little scraggly, but he's adorable.
Matt Fox: 37:45
Oh, lorax, it is male.
David Wright: 37:48
All right.
Matt Fox: 37:48
Yeah, yeah, he needs a bath.
David Wright: 37:51
Yeah, he needs at least a brush or something, something. But anyway, if you, if you take Lorax home, you can, you can get them all cleaned up and and brushed and all that kind of good stuff. Fair enough. You can take them home. Lorax needs a home. Detroitdogrescuecom slash adopt. Bring Lorax home tomorrow so you can give him a bath.
Matt Fox: 38:10
Thank you, that'd be fantastic.
David Wright: 38:12
