Roberta Ruggiero: Hypoglycemia and Mental Health
This is an incredible story about recovery from reactive hypoglycemia, a condition that, for Roberta, lead to weight gain, cravings, mental health issues, medications, misdiagnosis, and ultimately time in a psych ward complete with electric shock therapy — all because no one knew she was suffering from hypoglycemia. It is a shocking story with a happy ending.
Roberta, the founder and president of the Hypoglycemia Support Foundation and author of the book Do’s and Don’ts of Hypoglycemia, is now on a mission to educate others about hypoglycemia — a common condition that affects many people although they have NO idea.
Symptoms include: mental illness, irritability, cravings, anxiety, insomnia, sweating, cold hands and feet and more — symptoms that can send us on a wild goose chase looking for medical solutions that can ultimately be found in a sugar-free/ processed carb-free diet and better self-care. It is caused by the pancreas excreting too much insulin in response to carbohydrates. Misunderstood and left untreated it typically progresses to diabetes.
“The low blood sugar of today is the diabetes of tomorrow.” —Dr. Seale Harris
In short, this interview is a wake-up call to monitor and manage our blood sugar levels and to remind us that what we eat can PROFOUNDLY affect our mental health.
