We have five amazing senses that help us explore and understand the world, just like scientists!
With our eyes, we see colors and shapes; with our ears, we hear sounds; with our tongues, we taste flavors; with our hands, we feel textures; and with our noses, we smell scents. Each of these helps us gather important information about the world.
Today, we'll use our senses like scientists. Let’s start by finding a spot where you can sit quietly and focus.
Take a deep breath in through your nose, like you're smelling a flower. Breathe out through your mouth, like you're blowing away a leaf. This helps us focus and calm our minds.
Now, let’s make some observations. Look around—what’s one thing that catches your eye?
Can you see different colors or shapes? How would you describe them to someone who can’t see them?
Think about why noticing these details might be important for a scientist.
Listen carefully—what's one sound you can hear? Is it loud or soft? Near or far?
Predict what could be making that sound. Why do you think it’s making that sound?
Feel with your hands—what are they touching? Is it smooth or rough? Warm or cool?
If a scientist was using touch to learn about this object, what details would they find important?
Take a big sniff—what can you smell? Does it remind you of anything?
Why might that smell be important to notice in a science experiment?
If there’s a taste in your mouth right now, what is it like? Imagine you're a scientist studying flavors.
Take another deep breath. Let it out. Scientists also take time to think about what their senses tell them.
Let your breathing go back to normal. Think about all the observations you made today. How could these help a scientist understand more about our world?
Are you breathing through your nose, your mouth, or both? How does the air feel as it moves?
Being still and quiet, think about how you used your senses today just like a scientist uses tools in an experiment.
Each day, you can discover new things if you use your senses and observe carefully, just like a scientist.
