In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to documentary filmmaker, Andrea Thiele.

Andrea was born in Munich and studied Mass Communication at the University of Miami before enrolling at the University of Film & Television in Munich. After her Masters Degree in Documentary Film and TV Journalism, she directed the Docu-Comedy ‘You Drive Me Crazy’ which was screened at numerous prestigious festivals such as Leipzig, SXSW, Moscow IFF, before being theatrically released in Germany and Switzerland. She is currently shooting a feature documentary around the topic of being childfree, and is researching women’s childfree lifestyles in Turkey, Israel, Germany and the USA. She’s also creating an online interview series for sassy, childfree, online creators. Andrea herself is childfree.

In this episode, Andrea and I talk about how she has always been a passionate storyteller; how she came to be childfree herself; and how she had the idea for the documentary she is currently working on 5 years ago.

We also discuss how there is a lack of information and support for women who are living a childfree lifestyle; how Andrea has spoken to numerous women, whilst researching her documentary, who are not willing to go on camera and discuss their decision to not have children due to the stigma attached to it; and how she herself has experienced the upsetting implication that she has in someway ‘failed’ because she has not become a mother.

The conversation also encompasses Andrea’s findings that, from culture to culture, attitudes towards women who don’t have children are not so different; the concept of shame and how incredibly prolific it is amongst women who don’t have children; and how the narrative around being childless / childfree is actually perpetuated by women.

Finally, we talk about the words ‘childless’ and ‘childfree’; how Andrea is starting a course for women who want to learn how to unearth and tell their story; and how we need to invent a new word for ‘spinster’!
