joining us . Ceo of Good Sammies Enterprises . Good morning , cain . Good morning , how are you going ? Not bad , now we were saying earlier , that if you've got large items of furniture etc . The Good Sammies have been picking that up for quite some time , but you're taking it to another level . Is that correct ?
Speaker 2Yes , that's right . Yeah , it's a first with the local government in Western Australia . So , starting this week with the City of Canning , we're offering all City of Canning households two free collections through the on-demand waste service , where textiles , toys , linen , towels , handbags , shoes can be placed in bags , and a free service booked through the City of Canning's website .
Speaker 3This is a good idea , Cain . The City of Canning's website . This is a good idea , Cain . I mean , for too long now I've seen , in some cases , your donation bins absolutely overflowing with all of this stuff that's just been left outside and it gets damaged in the weather and all that sort of thing . So this means that there's going to be a lot more stuff that hopefully is more valuable .
Speaker 2Yeah , you're spot on . This is really bringing that collection service to 30,000 plus households in the city of Canning . They're already doing on-demand waste collection through white goods , through mattresses . Obviously there's skips and green waste , but textiles is a big , big problem in our society and so going to every household and offering this free service , we hope to divert those items from landfill . But importantly , as a charity , we create jobs for people with disability at Good Sammy who are driving those trucks to collect the goods and to sort the goods and keeping them in the circular economy .
Speaker 3So , Cain , can we extend it beyond the city of Canning ? Is this something that we can see rolled out across the rest of our councils in Perth ?
Speaker 2Well , we'll be assessing this trial over the next 12 months . We think it'll be successful and we're already in some early discussions with other local government authorities . To many people they will already be calling us to book those home collections that you said before . We've also been trialling a yellow bag collection , so we're dropping off yellow bags to households . But this on-demand , you-call-us model is a first , so I think you'll see us do it more in more suburbs in the future .
Speaker 1How do you stop people putting absolute crap in those bags and dropping it off to you , which becomes an issue for disposal ?
Speaker 2Oh , western Australians are really kind donors to start with , so that issue you talk about is only a very small amount of people . But we ask people to think about would you buy this item , and if so , it's okay to donate it . We don't accept anything that's broken or soiled and we would therefore have to incur that cost , but most people do the right thing .
Speaker 1So are the city accounting putting their hand in their pocket and financially supporting this venture , or just saying , yeah , you can do it ?
Speaker 2We've been really , really fortunate . This Friday night there's the Camco Engineering Mayor's Charity Gala Ball and , associated with that initiative , funds raised will be going to offset the cost . So that's a great um , a great initiative . But , as I said , it's free for those um , free for those residents all right , kane , good on you .
