Wendy Lockinge is preparing to attend the funeral of Dr Trescothick killed in the accident at Meniscus Laboratories. She muses on how much a mystery he remains.
After the lengthy drive to Kent in the University's ageing Bentley she   encounters three men whose lives seem connected to that of Brian Trescothick. She labels then the Mourner, the Soldier and the Man of Power.
The Mourner is Sir Mervyn Bulliton, Chairman of Meniscus laboratories. 
The soldier, still an impressive figure, is now in his eighties, and maintains a dignified silence distant from the others at the ceremony. 
The Man of Power only appears briefly after the committal, remaining in a the back of the Rolls Royce. Bulliton hurries towards the car, attempts a conversation, but recoils in apparent terror at his encounter with the Man in the car, as the Rolls moves away ...
