Speaker 1:

Thank you. Thank you, Hi. Welcome to our podcast, Revelation Within On the Go.

Speaker 2:

I'm Heidi Biles-Maepperson, one of your hosts and the owner and lead coach of the Revelation Within ministry and I'm Christina Motley, your other host, also a Revelation Within coach and Heidi's partner in all things Revelation Within. We are so happy to invite you to join us for this episode of Revelation Within on the go.

Speaker 1:

We're so glad that you've joined us today, definitely. Well, a few weeks ago we released an episode called the Five Intentions of Spirit-Led Eating. That's not the exact title, but that's what we were talking about in it, and we're going to kind of follow that up today with another episode that kind of directs attention to some of the hindrances and challenges and objections to living according to spirit-led eating principles and intentions.

Speaker 2:

Yes, and do we know anything about that? I think we do. I think we have just a wee bit of experience with those.

Speaker 1:

All right. So there's an underlying assumption and it's a good assumption. Christina is going to read that for us.

Speaker 2:

Yes, my body is a gift from God to me and is fearfully and wonderfully made in God's image and by his careful and loving design. I am his beautiful masterpiece, his poetry in motion, one of a kind, and I hope that's been helpful.

Speaker 1:

We'll see you next time. I think that's worth a podcast episode all by itself.

Speaker 2:

I just love the truth in that. I want to just renew my mind with that right now.

Speaker 1:

Yes, yes, it's good, isn't it? Oh, how fun. All right, so we're going to review those five intentions so that we all have a running start on what we're even talking about. So these are the five intentions of spirit-led eating and, in some ways, spirit-led living. We can just adjust them, because that's what we're after. We want to follow the lead of the Holy Spirit in what we do. So the first one is I will busy myself as the spirit leads until I prayerfully sense a physical hunger signal Number two.

Speaker 2:

I will invite the Spirit of God into my meal with a heart of gratitude and praise.

Speaker 1:

And number three, I will choose food that delights my taste buds and causes my body to feel energized and strong in a just right-sized portion.

Speaker 2:

Number four I will create a peaceful eating experience by being present with the food and reducing distractions.

Speaker 1:

And number five, I will stop eating before my stomach is full at the peaceful place of just enough, I feel peaceful, doesn't?

Speaker 2:

that just sound absolutely wonderful.

Speaker 1:

Yes, it does, it does. But we recognize the fact that some of us might trip up on these intentions, and I definitely do so. We thought we would talk about obstacles and hindrances and attitudes, and so let's talk about some of those. The most obvious one what is one obstacle or hindrance to being intentional, to live and eat in a spirit-led way? Willingness, willingness. I just don't want to deal with food and eating anymore. I just want to be normal.

Speaker 2:

I don't want to invite God into this.

Speaker 1:

I don't want to spiritualize this. I don't want to turn it into some sort of spiritual journey. I don't even want to wait until I'm hungry. I don't want to eat that little. I'm kind of mad at God, in fact.

Speaker 2:

Are we dealing with something this very moment? No, this is something that we all feel about all kinds of things in our lives, but definitely this is something that I'm pretty sure everyone who's listening has dealt with this willingness, why am I not willing? And there's there's reason behind it. There's always a reason that makes sense and that is reasonable. It's like there's a reason. It's not just because I'm a brat. You know, that's what I used to think. I used to think I'm a brat, I'm rebellious, I just want my own way. But honestly, there's always something underneath there is?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, there is. And over the years that I've been doing this on and off since 1999, I think my struggle with willingness often goes back to no, it's not, I'm just rebellious, I'm just a fleshly person. In fact, I think that's been a cop-out for me. Yes, for me too. Yeah, I wonder if our listeners can identify with that. When I slap that kind of a label on it like I'm just rebellious, then I don't have to deal with what it really is about. I can just say, well, that's just the way it is and that's just not the case.

Speaker 1:

So very often it has stemmed back. See if this resonates for you, christina, and our listeners, of course. So often it goes back to where am I in my relationship with God? Has there been some unresolved I don't know situation in my relationship with Him that I am now holding him at a distance very intentionally? And no, it's not just a spirit of rebellion, because a spirit of rebellion implies that I'm stuck in some way and if there's something that hasn't been resolved, that tells me it can be resolved, and God is all about resolving things with me and with you and anybody. So I have to look at what is this about? What is my. Why am I chafing? Why do I have this little edginess about being willing to slow down, be at peace, remove distractions and all of that?

Speaker 1:

And then the second one for me is there's lack of forgiveness in my life somewhere and that sounds so disconnected for many of us, maybe, but it's like for me it can start with. Is there something in my relationship with God that I'm chafing against? But is it even deeper than that? Have I actually been so disappointed by Him that I'm at a point now where I kind of resent what he has called me to do, or let go of or be, or I mean like truly I'm a good little Bible study girl, but over the years in my journey I've seen this come up and in which case I need he doesn't need forgiveness because he does no wrong, but I have to go to him with this and reconcile with him about it.

Speaker 1:

And there may also be unreconciled differences or resentments towards other people and towards myself, and these may play a part in my just not wanting to deal with the food and eating thing. I don't want to do it and I would do best to deal with these things no matter what. Yeah, but definitely it will help me overcome this hindrance. What about?

Speaker 2:

you, christina. Well, a couple of things that I'm thinking about as you're talking that whole idea calling myself a name rebellious, or, you know, I'm just a brat. Or I'm just I never grew up, or, you know, I'm just an immature Christian. Whatever you want to say in those moments, those are like identity statements.

Speaker 1:

Yes, they are.

Speaker 2:

It's like I'm saying well, this is who I am, this is who I've always been, and it owns me.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

And that's not the truth.

Speaker 1:

No, it's not. That's not the truth.

Speaker 2:

Our identity is in Christ, and the Holy Spirit lives in us, and so every moment is a new opportunity to go to him and be reminded of who we are because of him and who God is, and so, no, I don't want to give myself those names anymore, like I used to. My name now is Girl of God, beloved, redeemed More than a conqueror. Yeah, I mean, anything is possible, and so I want to make sure that when I hear myself saying those things, it's like wait a minute, stop. This is not my identity, this is not who I am, it doesn't own me. Let's bring it to the Lord. So there's that. The other thing is, a lot of times for me, I love what you shared, heidi, and I totally relate to those things as well. Another one is fear. Yeah, that's true, it's a big one. For me it's big, and I feel like it's been bigger in the last few years because I've been slammed with some big things.

Speaker 2:

And I know you have too, heidi, and so I trust God, but I know that he allows hard things, sometimes even ordains them, and so it's like, okay, lord, I can say I trust you, but I can also say, you know, kind of cringe and kind of you know want to run and hide because it's like what's coming next?

Speaker 2:

So, here's just a little tiny example from last night and I had an amazing day yesterday, heidi and I. We had some incredible classes and you know I spent time with amazing people and it was really a great day in so many ways. The end of the day, my daughter, my teenage daughter is driving her friends home and it is snowing like crazy Like we have not had a storm like this in 20, 30 years and she's out there driving her friends home. Oh, my.

Speaker 2:

And so what came up in me? There was fear. That came up in me. Sure, and she's really an excellent driver my daughter is and she has lots of snow experience driving but I was afraid, and so I found myself mindlessly basically going straight to the kitchen and I grabbed some food I was not hungry and started eating it and I felt that unwillingness in my spirit.

Speaker 2:

As I started eating, of course, I'm like what am I doing? I'm not hungry, I don't need this food and, like I said, I'd had a great day with every food and eating. It was a good day. But here I am, nine o'clock at night and I'm eating this food and I was feeling that very strong unwillingness. And what was it about? It was about fear and what do I know? Yes, god is the protector of my daughter, but he also allows car accidents sometimes, and my older daughter, in that very same vehicle, slid with the snow once and crashed. So I was like, oh, okay, okay, stop. So I did stop eating and I went to him and I said Lord, whatever you want, help me to trust you in this and he protected her.

Speaker 2:

And she did have a couple slips, almost slipped into another car but didn't, and came home safe and sound. But that doesn't mean that happened because I prayed. I mean, god would have protected her no matter what, but she could have had an accident. But that fear came up in me and my old go-to, the one that I've gone to for so many years, that counterfeit comfort for me is food For other people. It's other things sometimes and it was so easy just to go to that. So when you prayed.

Speaker 1:

Did you turn away from the food? I did.

Speaker 2:

I did. I thought you know what? This is a fake, this is a counterfeit. I don't want it. It's not going to protect anyone or help anyone or help me. It's going to actually be detrimental to me. So I did, I stopped, but I had already eaten basically a whole serving. But I recognized it in myself because I've seen it a lot of times. It's that fear. It comes up and all of a sudden your whole body tenses up and you're anxious and you're going to do whatever you want to do to feel better in that moment.

Speaker 1:

Yeah Well, and I appreciate what you've shared because it kind of coincides with the only solution that I've seen. I mean, obviously, if I have a forgiveness issue that's causing me to kind of resist, I need to work through that and forgive. But renewing our minds. Like what you were saying is this isn't going. You were doing what is true on the fly. It sounds like that's one of my mind renewal tools. So what is true is this isn't going. You were doing what is true on the fly. It sounds like that's one of our mind renewal tools. So what is true is this isn't going to keep her from crashing. What is true is it's not going to help anyone. And that kind of ties in exactly with really the main solution to this hindrance is to renew our minds.

Speaker 1:

And I would wager a guess that for you, in that moment, you had to remind yourself who God is and what does he do for his people. Yeah, sometimes he allows really hard things, but he's sovereign and he's good and he will provide what's needed. And for me, by renewing my mind, by using my God list to praise fest, I'm reminding myself of God's character and that is at the heart of my unwillingness much of the time. I have had a number of rounds with the Lord Rounds. Yeah, I used to refer to a season in my life as the divine whack-a-mole game, where that children's game, the fake little mole or gopher, whatever it is would pop his head up from one hole and you're trying to bap it with a mallet. That's padded and stuff. Yeah, I felt like the mole and like God was bapping me with a mallet as soon as I lifted my head up and that's not what he was doing, but that's how it felt.

Speaker 1:

Yes, yeah, my feelings. If, given a chance to define my so-called reality and what is true, it's going to lead me down a path to believe things about God's character that just aren't true. And then why would I want to surrender my eating to him? I wouldn't. Why would I want to follow the lead of his spirit? I wouldn't. So I've got to remind myself who God is and what he's really like, and that comes out of his word, straight out of his word, is the best place for me to go, because then I want to actually follow the leading of his spirit and spirit led eating is not on the do not do list anymore.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I mean, it's so true. I was talking with someone just the other day who was just breaking down in tears and saying this is not the way my life was supposed to turn out.

Speaker 1:

Oh, I know that feeling.

Speaker 2:

You know, and most of us understand that at some time in our lives we have felt that way and it's like this wasn't supposed to happen. This wasn't supposed to happen. And what about these three things that were supposed to happen and they didn't? And here I am and God is God and I'm his girl. But what do I do with this disappointment and sorrow? And no, I don't want to give him my food and eating.

Speaker 1:

No way, you know.

Speaker 2:

And that's just honest and bringing it out into the light is so good and talking with someone about it sharing that it's so important, so important.

Speaker 1:

So a second hindrance or attitude or difficulty with following the intentions of spirit-led eating will sometimes be the influence of the world around us, how we relate to food in our culture. It's almost like we can't be peaceful. We're not allowed to be peaceful because, after all, some of the foods are demonized and you can't possibly eat those and other foods are made righteous. It's like we can't be at peace with food and eating in our bodies because if I don't look a certain way according to the society's standards, how could you possibly not be on a diet? And we're going to talk about that in a minute. But another way this plays in is the influence of my calendar, the influence of the people in my life. The distractions in my life can keep me running at a pace that doesn't support spirit led eating, and that's one reason why we use the word intentions five intentions of spirit-led eating, and then, of course, the media and the impact it has on our relationship with food.

Speaker 1:

What do you think, christina? Do you find that an influence? You know, is that something that affects your willingness or ability to follow spirit-led eating?

Speaker 2:

Yes, so much so, and I'm hearing so many people say the same thing, especially with social media right now.

Speaker 2:

Social media has exploded just exploded in the past few years about weight and food and eating and weight loss plans and drugs and yes, oh my gosh, it is like. I mean, the pressure is tremendous and I've heard so many people talk about this. Recently I actually took Instagram off of my phone. I am done with it. I mean, once in a while I will go on to see my daughter's posts and their pictures, because that's really fun. I don't want to miss those.

Speaker 2:

But I told both of my girls. I said you know what? I'm having a problem with this. This is not good for me and you're probably seeing totally different things on your feed than I am, but I'm seeing these things that I'm struggling with and I don't need to fill my mind with all of this. So let me know when you post that cute picture with your girlfriend and I'll get on and see it and then I'll get off and I'm just, I've taken it off. And Facebook, same thing. Facebook has completely changed. It is no longer just pictures and people communicating. It's ad after ad after ad and all of it is screaming, screaming at us to take this drug, to follow these steps, to buy this, to do that. It's amazing, I mean, it's overwhelming.

Speaker 2:

It's just overwhelming. Yeah, and so if I'm trying to renew my mind with God's thoughts and what the word of God says about me and my body and food and eating and just life in general, and then the rest of the time I'm filling my mind with all this stuff on social media, it's not going to happen, forget it. My mind will be renewed, but not really renewed. What's the word? Destroyed, undued, unrenewed by these messages, and I know that the enemy is loving it Every minute he is loving it.

Speaker 2:

He's using all of it to just bring people down.

Speaker 1:

Right right, and we have done an episode in our podcast about what are we feeding on, and it's a social media post. You might want to check it out. So, christina, you have clearly exercised your freedom of choice and exercising a solution to this influence of the world by removing social media from, or some social media at least from, your normal everyday life. Another solution and I want to just really plug this right now is okay, get off of social media but join a supportive community like revwithinteam, find out about it and sign up at RevelationWithinorg. But really we need supportive people that align with our values. We want to surround ourselves with people who kind of think about this issue like we do, and that's exactly what we do on RevWithinteam. So we've had a lot of fun this month in our community and we have more fun on the horizon.

Speaker 1:

But we have four mini challenges happening in the month of March. We've done two of them so far. They're each three days long, and the first one was the Spirit-Led Eating Challenge and we did lives and encourage people and provided ways they could track and ask for support, and it was so much fun. It was so much fun and, as you can see, it's like it assumes that we are on the same page, and those that aren't on the same page, who are there for other reasons, don't participate in that necessarily. The second mini challenge that's three days long we're in the middle of right now, and it's Mind Mastery Marathon. Christina and I have been sharing in our lives 20 different mind renewal tools. Oh, loving it, loving it, yes, yes. So our entire community is focused on being free from any counterfeit comforts, but including overeating, overexercising, over-dieting and all the other overages.

Speaker 2:

Yes, so it's so much fun. Yes, so one of the things that I've heard people say often and ask me often is why is Revelation Within different? I mean, I don't get it. What is it about? Revelation Within that kind of sets you guys apart or sets us apart, basically, from a lot of the things that are out there that have the title faith-based or Christian, that kind of thing. And so this is my answer, and it's so simple Everything we do points you, points us to Jesus. That's just it. That's the answer. Everything we do. And so, if it's a mini challenge, if it's a class, if it's a coaching group, if it's one-on-one coaching, if it's materials that are on the Mighty Networks website that you can access, every single thing that we do points you and points us to the Lord, every single thing and to the Word of God.

Speaker 1:

That's what we do, that's what sets us apart, and building intimacy with God by changing the way we think using those tools. It's so simple and yet it's so profound, and I don't know anybody else who does it. In fact, when I was going through a class on how to set up your messaging and all of that a business like thing, I went online and had to do research to try to find other people who were doing this. Nobody, there was. Nobody that is doing what we're doing, which may mean nobody wants it, but that's okay.

Speaker 2:

Well, I just, you know, and I've obviously spent some time on social media and no, there isn't anybody else doing it, not that I can see, not that I have found. And so what you said, heidi, is so important, building intimacy with the Lord, and for a lot of us, I think we might think well, I already have that. I'm already. You know, I've been studying the Bible for years and I've been a Christian for a long, long time. Yes, and that's wonderful, it's so wonderful. But if you're dealing with a stronghold, some kind of an issue in your life that you can't get past, there's more for you.

Speaker 1:

There is.

Speaker 2:

Yes, there really is. We have a beautiful community that is full of people who are experiencing that more.

Speaker 1:

Yes, so true. Thank you for that.

Speaker 2:

And we are in progress. None of us have arrived Heidi and I have not arrived and we won't until we get to heaven but we are watching and experiencing transformation in people and deep joy and brand new relationships with the Lord, even those that have known the Lord for a long, long time.

Speaker 1:

That's so true. So that is a really great cure-all to that influence of the world that might keep us in a place where we just don't go along with the whole idea of spirit-led eating. If you're struggling with it and you want to kind of dive in, join the community with us, and we would love to have you. Yes, we would. The third hindrance or hurdle that many people struggle with in developing a life with spirit led eating intentions is the pressure to diet instead. And oh my goodness, it is just so intense that pressure or to in some way change my physical appearance in some other way and this conventional dieting approach that I feel pressure to follow along with can be so overwhelming. And let's talk for a minute.

Speaker 1:

The solution, I think, is in part to reason together with us for a moment, sounds good. What are the drawbacks of dieting? I'm not anti-diet. I'm not telling you you're not a good Christian if you diet. That's not it. But I do hope your heart is open to hearing this. If you have any desire whatsoever to experience the peace that we have encouraged you with in the spirit-led eating approach, then just reason with us for a moment. What are some of the drawbacks of diets, christina, what's one at the top of the list, at the top?

Speaker 2:

of the list is you know what? Is this sustainable? Is it sustainable? Is it something that you can do in your life for the rest of your life? Is it sustainable? And I just have to say that for those of you that are feeling very much drawn to diets I know how that feels and Heidi knows how that feels. We get it, we get it. There is a very strong pull because it looks like we can be fixed. It's like just fix this, Can you just push this button, Can you just follow this?

Speaker 1:

list, or just take a pill or a shot in your gut.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I mean, there is something so appealing about a quick fix.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

But again, is it sustainable?

Speaker 1:

Right.

Speaker 2:

Will you be able to continue eating that way and will the weight stay off Right, or is it just? Will it come back on? Like you know, the research says what, what, 98% of people gain the weight back.

Speaker 1:

And then some yeah.

Speaker 2:

So the answer is it sustainable? Maybe for 2%, maybe for 1%.

Speaker 1:

It's not for me, that's for sure. So another reason that diets are like just let's ditch them already is what is the focus that it causes in my life? When I have dieted in my past and I have well, I did have a flirtation with a diet not that long ago, I mean like a couple years ago. What was my focus? What is your focus when you've dieted? I mean, for me, it's all about my weight, my eating, my deprivation, my calories, my points or my this or my that. It focuses me, on me, me, me. And really is that a focus that I want?

Speaker 1:

If I belong to Jesus, I know that he wants me to keep my eyes on him. The author and perfecter of my faith set my mind on things above, not on earthly things. These are all scriptures and there's so many more. So what is the focus caused in my life? Another really good thing to think about if you're drawn to dieting is has dieting brought you peace in your relationship with food, eating and your body? Because if it doesn't bring you peace, do you want to keep doing it? Do you want to keep doing it? I don't.

Speaker 2:

No, it's just not something that we want to keep. Yeah, you just feel it doesn't feel right.

Speaker 1:

No, no, and there's no way out. Really, the biggest reason I can think of is dieting doesn't address the real issue. It's almost like going to a doctor getting a diagnosis and getting treatment for that diagnosis and then finding out down the road it was the wrong diagnosis, because we have a stronghold problem, not a food eating away problem, and it's like we don't want to treat the wrong problem. We have a stronghold problem, so what we need to do is think differently about food and eating in our bodies, and again we go back to the community is a great way of doing that. Getting in God's word, learning how to renew your mind about this issue. The solution is going to be reminding ourselves of what is true, renewing our minds about it. And do I really want to be focused on me myself? And I, no, I really don't. That's not fun. What's the fourth hindrance that we have today, christina, and this will be the last one we talk about today.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, really our own history can be a huge hindrance, and I really can relate to this one too. So, past experiences, old ingrained habits, things that we've been doing the same way for years and years and years for the same reasons a lot of the time these are things that can be just huge roadblocks in our journey and in our desires. You know, we don't want to run from those anymore. Right, facing into those takes courage, but you don't have to do it alone. Right, we have the Lord to do it with us. We have the Lord to do it with us. And I would always say, in community, with a trusted friend or counselor or pastor or someone that is a safe person for you emotionally. Yeah, this is so, so important.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, the solution to this is possibly getting professional help, whether it's therapy or counseling or coaching help. Whether it's therapy or counseling or coaching, that may be a great place to start to unpack a little bit of what you have I don't know those lies you've believed or what we call the little t truths of our past, what has been told to us, what our experience has taught us that we are hanging our hat on today. We don't need to let our past define us, and so we want to experience the freedom that God has in store for us from our past and really so much about my past and I think Christina can say this too has influenced the way we think about food, eating and our bodies today. We've had to really work at this and still do right. I mean, do you still work at?

Speaker 2:

this. Oh yes, yeah, I mean, you know, I was working on it. Just last week, I shared with you what was happening there. Yeah, I mean, it's always, it's a process, and I think I used to be afraid of that process and I would pretend that it wasn't there and I would say, oh, you know what? I'm fine, it's good, it's all good, but my behavior was showing that it was not all good. Right, right.

Speaker 1:

And a lot of people, especially Christian people, will say well, god doesn't want me to look at the past, he wants me to press on towards what is ahead. Yes, but Deuteronomy I forget the exact reference also tells us to remember the past and learn from it and be sure to live according to those lessons. And so looking at the past can be very helpful if God is leading me to do so. And that's the key. What is God leading me to do? Is he leading me to just shove it down? Because that's when a lot of us start struggling with basically disordered eating behaviors or other kinds of behaviors that kind of rear their ugly heads and cause us to not be content with the life we're living, knowing that God has more for us than the way we're living right now. Absolutely yes, those four hindrances have solutions, and I'm very excited that they do, because I would be sunk if they didn't. Well, I would be too.

Speaker 1:

Yeah absolutely so if you want to experience spirit-led eating and living. We're going to just read through those five intentions again and know that you can do this, and we'll talk about more hindrances in a future episode.

Speaker 2:

Christina you want to read number one, I will busy myself as the spirit leads until I prayerfully sense a physical hunger signal.

Speaker 1:

I will invite the spirit of God into my meal with a heart of gratitude and praise.

Speaker 2:

I love it. I will choose food that delights my taste buds and causes my body to feel energized and strong, in a just right size portion.

Speaker 1:

I will create a peaceful eating experience by being present with the food and reducing distractions.

Speaker 2:

I will stop eating before my stomach is full, at the peaceful place of just enough.

Speaker 1:

You know what I feel like I need to look back at these right now and just highlight some of the words that are in this way of approaching food and eating. So the Holy Spirit is there. So the Holy Spirit is there, prayerfully is there. Gratitude and praise is there. Delights and energized oh, I just love it. Peaceful is there. I just love it, I just love it. So enough is there too. I love that.

Speaker 2:
