If you told me that, after topping out at 285 pounds, that I would be able to lose over 85 pounds within a year, that I would reverse my diabetes, that I would completely transform my life, I wouldn't have believed you or I definitely would have some doubt. But this journey isn't just about reversing diabetes and it's not just about a year of transformation. It's actually 25 years in the making. If you're new to me, I'm Dr Dwayne Wood, that's Wood with an E. The E stands for endocrinology. Here on the channel, I educate, I empower and I encourage you to take charge of your health, your life, avoid complications and go to the next level. We're creating the life we've always wanted and in this year 2024, our new theme is New Year UU. So, as you, you heard me say, if you told me that after topping 285 pounds yeah, 285 pounds that I would be able to lose 85 pounds to reverse my diabetes and set myself up for metabolic success, even as the endocrinologist, even as the hormone guy, even as the guy whose job it is to help people with their metabolic disease, I'll tell you it would have been a hard thought. Listen to me, it would have been a hard thought. Listen to me, it would have been a hard thought, because there is so much that goes into managing diabetes, there's so much that goes into metabolic disease. There's so much that goes into reversing diabetes, as you guys have heard me talk about. So this journey, as we've been talking about here, it's a year process New year, new you. You saw my blood sugars or you saw my weight right 52 pounds over 2023, right 52 pounds, so a pound a week. But the journey is not just about a year. It's 25 years in the making. Now I want you to think, I want you to take a moment and I want you to think about a challenge that you've been facing for a long time. Maybe it's a health issue, maybe it's a other personal struggle or something that's been weighing on you for years. What if I told you that within you, within a year, within you, you have the power to completely change that part of your life, that you have the potential, that you have unlimited ability? Would you believe me?
Speaker 1:25 years ago a little bit more than that, actually I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I remember the exact moment that I heard the words. I had gone to my doctor, I had talked to him about my symptoms and he had done some tests. I went back home, I was sleeping y'all my symptoms and he had done some tests. I went back home, I was sleeping y'all and I remember my wife waking me up and saying hey, dwayne, your doctor called and he said that you have diabetes.
Speaker 1:The shock, the fear, the overwhelming sense of what now? But it wasn't just the diagnosis that was weighing on me, it was everything else that was surrounding it. Right and just like in life, there are all these things that are coming at us, and if one of them came, or if two of them came, one at a time, we could probably manage that. But when they all come together, it seems so insurmountable. The stress from being in medical school, and not just the stress of being in medical school this was my third career change y'all, and I was only 30 years old. It felt like my life was in a constant flux and I was always just shy of being successful, but I was always just shy of giving up. Can you relate to that? The feeling that life keeps throwing things at you and all you can do is to try to stay afloat? Maybe you've been there. Maybe you've been there too.
Speaker 1:Let me take a moment. Let me tell you about one March, several years ago. I went whitewater rafting. You may have heard this story. Now picture this You're in a raft, the water is calm at first, but then it starts to get rough.
Speaker 1:The guide is shouting instructions and suddenly the raft tips. The guide is shouting instructions, you're thrown into the water and I was thrown into the water and instinctively I grabbed for the raft, thinking that it was my lifeline, and I held on for dear life. But what I quickly learned was because I was at the front of the raft and the raft was moving faster than me that it soon covered me. But here's the thing what if the thing that you're holding on to, what if it's the very thing that is the thing that's actually causing the problem? What if the very thing you're clinging to for safety is actually what's pulling you under? Clinging to for safety is actually what's pulling you under. That was me under the water, clinging to the raft, trying to hold on for dear life. But the more I held on, the more I realized I couldn't breathe. Do you know what's under a raft in the water? There's not a lot of air. There's not a lot of air. In fact, there's no air. And it hit me.
Speaker 1:How often do we hold on to things in our lives that we think are saving us when, in reality, they're dragging us down? I want you to take a moment to think. What are you holding on to that's no longer serving you? What are you clinging to out of fear, even though it's keeping you from moving forward? For me, it was unhealthy habits. It was denial, it was stress, it was inappropriate and buffering behavior. I thought they were keeping me afloat, I thought they were just, you know, coping habits, but they were suffocating me. It wasn't until I was completely out of options. It wasn't until I was completely out of options, completely out of breath, that I finally let go. And in that moment of letting go, something shifted. I didn't know what was going to happen next, but I knew I couldn't stay where I was. What about you? What would happen if you let go of the things that are holding you back? What could your life look like if you trusted yourself to move forward, even if you don't know exactly where the journey will take you?
Speaker 1:After that experience, I knew I needed to make a change, really make a change Not just on the surface, but deep down, and that's when I developed what I call the New Year, new you formula for reversing diabetes. This isn't just about diabetes, it's about transformation. It's about transforming your life and it's about transforming my life. The first step was to decrease insulin. Insulin resistance right, or hyperinsulinemia, was at the heart, the core of diabetes, and I realized that the true value and to truly heal, I needed to address that head on. So I started making changes, really making changes, and you've heard the pillars making changes to my diet, incorporating fasting and focusing on how my body responded. But let me ask you this when in your life are you ignoring the core issue? What would happen if you addressed it head on? From the unknown? It pushes us in a direction that doesn't allow us to stay at the fight, and so we circumvent it, we move away, we move beyond, we sidestep it instead of hitting it head on.
Speaker 1:Next, I had to learn to suppress my appetite, not just physical hunger, but that emotional hunger. I had to confront the reasons I was eating, not because I was hungry, but because I was stressed, I was bored, I was anxious, I was depressed. I was anxious for the future, I was worried about the present and I was depressed about the past. So I started practicing mindful eating. I began asking myself before each meal am I truly hungry or am I feeding something else? Am I feeding something else? Am I eating because of habits, because of emotions, because of access, because the food is right there, or because of taste? What are you feeding in your life? Are there habits you've developed to cope with something deeper? What would happen if you started asking yourself why you do what you do? Why do I eat what I eat? Why do I go where I go?
Speaker 1:Finally, I had to reduce sugar, not just in my diet but in my life. Sugar was my comfort. It was my go-to when things felt overwhelming, but it was also my crutch, and it was time to let go. What's your sugar? What's the thing you turn to for comfort, even though you know it's holding you back? What would your life look like if you started replacing it with something healthier, something that truly nourishes you? What would happen? But here's the thing. But here's the thing.
Speaker 1:These changes weren't just physical. They required a complete frame shift, a complete change of mind, a complete change in my heart. For years, I saw myself as a victim of circumstance. I blamed my genetics, my stress my life situation. But that day in the rapids, I realized I had a choice. I could continue to see myself as a victim or I could start seeing myself as a survivor, as someone who could actually actively shape my life. What about you? How do you see yourself? Are you the victim of your circumstances? Are you the victim of your circumstances or are you the author of your story? What would change if you started seeing challenges as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles to be avoided? This mindset shift was critical. It allowed me to see connections between my physical health, my mental health and my emotional well-being. It's all connected and when you start to shift when I started to shift my perspective, everything changed. What would happen if you reframed your challenges? If you stop seeing them as obstacles but as opportunities to learn and to grow, how would your life be different?
Speaker 1:Reversing my diabetes yeah, you've seen it. You've watched me. You've watched my weight go down. You've watched me here in this space, share with you my A1C down to 5.8. You've seen the changes. It wasn't just about the physical changes. It was about letting go of what was holding me back, embracing a new way of thinking and committing to the journey every single day.
Speaker 1:But this isn't just my story, it's your story too. You have the power to transform your life. You have the power to let go of whatever's holding you back and to step into the life you've always wanted. So I ask you, what's your next step? What one thing can you let go of today to move closer to the life you want? What's one change you can make right now to start your journey? Remember, sometimes we must let go to move forward, trusting that the journey will lead us to a better, healthier place.
Speaker 1:And so my journey of one year to reverse my diabetes started 25 years ago and just as I say, or as I have on my back of my cup, I am now becoming the person I thought I would be 20 years ago. Oh yeah, so that is the crux of New Year New you, that is the crux of new year, new you. That is the catalyst, that is the space from which new year, new you comes, and it expands, it infuses, it gets better as you incorporate it into your life, as you look at the things that are going on. We're talking about diabetes, we're talking about reversing diabetes, but ultimately this can be applied to every area of your life If you master it here, if you master it in this space, then all the other spaces get better, all the other relationships, all of the other challenges become opportunities for learning, and I can't wait to see what happens when your journey for one year takes flight.
Speaker 1:This is Dr Dwayne Wood, that's Wood with an E the E stands for endocrinology. Here on the channel, I educate, I empower and I encourage you to take charge of your health, take charge of your life, avoid complications and go to the next level, creating the life you always wanted. And for this year y'all, new Year, new Year, thank you.
